    Just to clear something up:
The guy that plays Randall in this movie is not the guy from Mallrats, though I understand why you’d be dazed and confused.
This actor is Jason London and the actor in Mallrats is Jeremy London. Twin brothers. That’s right.

That's what I love about movies...
I get older, they stay the same age 😉
I love a generation's look back at previous generations through film. Dazed & Confused is such a nostalgia trip for a decade I wasn't even alive for.
Along similar lines (great ensemble cast incuding Ben Affleck, great tunes, and a slice of a beloved era) - 200 Cigarettes. If you can find it, it's a hilarious New Years comedy.

Richard Linklater really knows how to capture time, place and character like few others. He's always been great, but with this film he shows that he's of the most insightful American filmmakers of his time.

There’s a moment near the end where Floyd stands up on the football field and it’s just a shot of him staring off into the distance. I think it’s the most powerful moment in the film. All day he’s been told to think about his future, but here in this moment, he’s surrounded by his friends enjoying the moment. He stares down an ocean of uncertainty ahead of him, but in that moment he is just there and he’s okay.

The young kids were becoming freshmen and the older cast were becoming seniors. The hazing was basically a ritual to see who would be accepted by the popular kids their freshmen year. It determined who might have a smooth year and who might get picked on.
So yeah, you can abstain no problem but you'll have a rough first year at highschool.

    "Alright, alright, alright."
Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Matthew McConaughey, Marissa Ribisi, Wiley Wiggins, Joey Lauren Adams, Shawn Andrews, and Renée Zellweger (uncredited).
Word Count Fact: The word "man" is said 203 times in this movie. The word "fuck" was used 59 times throughout this movie.
Location Location Fact: The infamous hazing scene was shot at the old Americana Theater (out of operation at the time) located at 2200 Hancock Drive, just off Burnet Road in Austin, Texas. It is now the Yarborough Branch of the city library, but still retains some of the original exteriors and signs from this movie's era.
On Set Fighting Fact: Shawn Andrews and Jason London did not get along during filming. At one point, Richard Linklater had to break up a fight between them. It changed the ending, which was going to feature Pickford (Shawn Andrews) instead of Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey). It also explains their almost total lack of dialogue despite sharing several scenes.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Led Zeppelin recorded a song titled Dazed And Confused (1969) on the album Led Zeppelin 1 (1969). In the scene where Don Dawson (Sasha Jenson) gets Benny O'Donnell (Cole Hauser) out of wood shop, just after Don gets Ron Slater's (Rory Cochrane) attention to signal Benny, listen for Slater's disbelief at Led Zeppelin's drummer John Bonham extended drum solos at concerts.

@BenJammin1005 Also, the kid that played Pickford was a pain in the ass to deal with and literally fought Jason London (Pink). He was so much trouble, and Matthew so good, that a lot of his stuff was changed to be Wooderson. Pickford kind of disappears halfway through the movie, this is why.

My best friend had such a deep voice and a mustache early so he started getting served at a college liquor store at the age of 13-14. He would collect from everyone in school that wanted alcohol for the weekend, charge a little extra so we had money for booze and would go in there with a HUGE order. He was in there so often and spent so much money that he got to know the owner well enough that the owner offered him a job. He had to turn it down because he was only 16 at the time. They all thought he was 23. Those were some good drunken days. RIP Stoney.

We absolutely idolized this movie when I was in high school. It was the mid 90s and I mostly hung out with stoners, goth kids, and gang affiliates. The stoner kids absolutely loved this movie and I definitely count myself in that. Going out with your friends riding around, filling the car with smoke, trying to find a party... it all felt like some grand adventure. Which is exactly what this movie captures. That feeling of being young and meeting the world for the first time. Girls and Beer and Smoke and Breaking the Rules just for the rush. It is such an amazing time in your life. This movie is a love letter to the 70s version of that experience and watching it never fails to put a smile on my face.

  • @michaelbuhl4250

When Cynthia, the redhead says that everything they do is in preparation for the future, and if we're all going to die anyway then we should live in the moment, that sums up what the movie is really about. Whether it's Mitch deciding to hang out with seniors and make out with a sophomore, Cynthia making a date with Wooderson, Mike picking a fight and getting walloped, or Pink deciding to hang out with his stoner friends rather than play football his senior year, all of them stop worrying about the future and just act in the moment. The fact that the whole movie takes place in a 24 hour period puts the focus on the decisions rather than the consequences.

Life in highschool was like this all the way up till 95. I remember my final year of highschool things began to change. When i was a freshmen it was not uncommon for teachers and students to be seen smoking in the same area. And we used to be able to leave and come as we wanted. Then after that year they started changing things. Requiring permits for cars, no longer being allowed to smoke, hell at the end you couldnt even have cigarettes on you or you could get suspended.

In a small town of 2400 people, even in the mid to late 90s, we had chaperoned parties after sporting events. We'd have snacks, all kinds of games, videos, & music. We eventually created the "Wildcat refuge." It was a non alcoholic bar with music, pool tables, a card table, dart boards, foosball, arcade cabinets, a big screen TV with VCR, & they sold concessions.
I agree kids today don't have places to go to hang out, not like we did. There is too much liability with so many different parenting styles today. Back then it took a village & the village raised us, in a matter of speaking.

I really liked this film because it touched on hazing traditions that I feared going into high school but as it turned out had played themselves out and were not a tradition that was sustained when I went in as a freshman. It's a microcosm of a world that I entered in its dying days. I loved all of the many character arcs that happened in one day. Also I really enjoyed the collaborated reaction to this as it added many different insights to what might have been a single person reaction. I hope to see more of these!

I was recently out to lunch with my mom, and we were actually talking about how there's not a lot of variety in car colors anymore. Especially with newer cars.
When I was growing up, and especially when she was growing up, there were way more colors of cars. My mom's job as a kid was to help her father detail cars. She told me that the reason there's not a lot of variety in car colors nowadays is because car companies made different car colors a premium and that's not something people want to spend extra for, which is understandable.
My favorite car growing up was a lavender toyota. I hope one day car colors can be diverse again without having to fork over a lot of extra money.

Also, my first car was a 1976 Dodge Dart duster. Paid $399 for it in 1987.

I had a friend in high school whose Mother would get booze for us and we partied at her house. She figured since we were going to be drinking she'd rather we did it there where we could be safe. And Kaiielle as a classic rock music fan I recommend the movie Heavy Metal kick ass soundtrack and cool animation..

One of my favourite films! Love to see people react to it. Fun "Saving Private Ryan" trivia: Cynthia (the redhead girl) is Marissa Ribisi, sister of Giovani Ribisi (the medic), and she is married to singer Beck. There is a wonderful making of doc available on YT, and "high-ly" recommend it. Also, despite watching this a thousand times, I still can't tell where Renee Zellweger ends and Joey Lauren Adams begins. Yes, they are both in this film lol.

    Classic!
“The most mature bunch so far”. The dark haired dude who got beat up was the same actor that was stabbed in saving private Ryan (Adam Goldberg). Ben Affleck as the jerk who gets the paint dumped on him. Milla Jojovich, Parker Posey, etc.

Sweet, two of my favorite reactors doing one of my favorite movies.
While I don't have firstand experiece for the location (I'm from South Dakota not Texas) or the time period (graduated in 1994) I had siblings that did. And most of it carried through until shortly after I graduated. So for the hazing, yes it did happen, but not like this. Freshman were essentially Seniors' personal assistants. You had to do things for them, be deferent to them, etc. especially through Homecoming. At the end of homecoming week & just before the football game they had a pep rally and people who didn't participate enough were hazed there. It wasn't anything physically or mentally detrimental, maybe some embarrassment, but that's it. Since at our school 7th & 8th graders were part of the high school, we essentially had 3 years of it. Some of the punishments might include being blindfolded & having to eat dead skin (corn flakes) or eyeballs (peeled grapes), or having to propose to a senior (mine was my ride to school so we knew each other). And yes, there were parents & some adults at the pep rallys.
Some of the things you guys might have missed in the movie:
The liquor store scene, the the smoking pregnant woman is also buying a bottle of liquor, so, yeah....
As for the clerk, he knew Mitchell was underage, but played along in the way he did for pausible deniability (he told ke he was 18!) and because there were some back then who reasoned that if you're too strict with kids they might get into something more dangerous and really harm themselves.
The reason most of the seniors were so vicious probably had to do with how they were hazed when they were freshman and this was their payback, or, they were sociopaths, 50/50.
I have seen quite a few people who get like Clint on weed. It's not always a mellow high, some get paranoid, some get agressive, it just depends. I figure it's like alcohol, you can have happy & mean drunks.
The soundtrack was actually 2 separate releases "Dazed and Confused” (blue cover) & "Even More Dazed and Confused" (pink cover). Together they have ALMOST every song from the movie (the biggest omission is Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion). But it is an excellent soundtrack that I still listen to.
THE CARS! Yes I like the classic cars, muscle cars in particular, and this movie doesn't disappoint. I'm actually restoring one right now and it'll probably be done right around the time they fully switch to electric cars🤬!
Great reaction guys! Hope you do this again sometime.

This is probably my favorite movie of this genre just because of the fact that I can totally relate to every aspect of it!! That's because I graduated high school in 1975!!
So this movie takes place in 1976 which means that I probably would have been closer to Matthew McConaughey's character than anybody else because I went back to the public high school in my town to hang out with my friends that were still going to school. I graduated from the Catholic high School in town the year before!! So it was a weird dynamic where I didn't know anything about the school that I was hanging out in a year after I graduated high school 😮😮
The other aspect that I really relate to is partying out in a park or wherever they were partying!!! WE used to do EXACTLY the SAME thing!! There was a park in my town that that had a parking lot that was way down at the end of this road and it was a dead end and that's where we used to hang out and party!!! 16th St park❤❤🎉🎉
If they ever build a time machine while I'm still alive THAT'S where I'm going back to, 1975!!!❤

We had a paddle in our elementary school. The principal never used it on me.
Instead he'd swing me around his office by my hair. My feet never touched the ground. They named the school after him after he died.

Anthony Rapp is the blonde guy in the glasses, he’s been in a bunch of movies and tv shows and broadway shows. He is also one of the Guys who accused Kevin Spacey of being inappropriate with them when he was like 18.
When I was a kid going to junior high in the 80’s the hazing thing high school kids did was either use eggs or shaving cream to haze kids going into the 10th grade. Luckily it was outlawed before I went into the tenth grade because some kids got hurt.
There are plenty of colours for cars lol.

i was born in 1980 and went to school in Michigan. Our principal had a paddle hanging on his wall but i seriously doubt it was ever used. And it had holes in it and the kids always talked about how the holes made it so you could swing faster and it would hurt more
