  • Learning off-camera flash will lift your photography to a new level entirely.
In this video you will learn how to use Off-Camera Flash effectively in outdoor locations.
We will teach you the two most important rules of Flash photography.
    Why use flash?
Because it opens up so many possibilities for creative lighting.
You will always have a creative, controllable light source in your bag.
You can use it to enhance the available light.
You can use it as your main light source.
You can use it to freeze action.
Off camera flash shows shape, texture, is more interesting, and emphasizes the highlights and shadows in your subject.
It is versatile, allows you to separate the subject from the background and makes many more advanced techniques possible.

Great shots Warren, especially towards the end of the video with the setting sun. Very informative video as per usual. Looking forward to seeing more.

Indie is a very attractive model. I like the resulting photos very much. I am a fan of OCF myself using flashes from 40 to 1200Ws and thought to do a decent job, but our photography is very impressive. In the video a softbox was used to place the model in shade for doing the pictures on the picknick table. In the past I used a diffusor or a translucent umbrella to "shade" my model, which was never engought shade. Your videos are well structured and very educational. I like this very much.

I enjoy your videos.. personally I would use primes to blur the background..

That is a personal choice. I prefer to shoot in areas that the background enhances the image. Then i separate the model from the background with lighting. Blurry backgrounds are great for natural light shots or distracting backgrounds.

Your aperture settings are there to be explored. Try not to restrict yourself to one technique. Photography has a wealth of techniques that are there to explore.

,,,looking forward to viewing the OCF series as your images are somehow different from others showing OCF techniques and certainly different from ours!

Great video. I love how you took the time to explain the why behind your creative choices, not just the how (which is also valuable).
I’m really impressed with the quality of shots you got with minimal gear and crew. If I had seen those pictures in a magazine, I would have totally thought they were bigger productions.
Great work by the model. She took direction well. Excellent poses and facial expressions.
As someone who’s new to off-camera flash-just bought my first softbox-I’m excited this is the first in a series with more OCF videos on the way.
Do you offer flash photography workshops with model photo shoots? I’m interested in getting in-person instruction.
Thank you for all you do to support photographers.

So any experience/insights using tye Sony Alpha - and according to B&H - Sony Flash and Commander/Receiver to get even close to the promised “30fps” 🦄

Hi George. I'm not sure if your question relates to stills or video. 30 FPS is a video setting. I have limited experience with the Sony system. Sorry.

Yeah, I haven’t found the subject matter to test it out (NYC lousy with tourists so I couldn’t get close to the Ice Skating rinks around dusk) but the Sony A1 takes 30 fps / 30 stills in a sec - bought the SONY controller and HVL-F60RM2 Strobe (supposed to be proprietary according to other TH-camrs) and we’re supposed to be able to shoot faster than 1/200-1/250 but how much faster is something I haven’t seen any examples of…
The electronic shutter and dual processors and CF express card enable that 30fps but how fast the flash can fire seems to be the bottleneck…
I shoot Theatre 🎭 so high speed sync is a capability that intrigues me with this expense toy! 😉

This video would be much better if you'd get rid of the background music when you are talking.
