    Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
    I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together. We also do a lot of epoxy projects as well as woodturning.

    Pretty cool yo-yo Carl. Great choice of wood. I make a few of those occasionally for give aways and have found that the younger folks need to be taught how to play with them. Then they really enjoy them. But us old guys and gals just grab "em and go!

    Carl ….. Great video and a very nice yo yo! The grain is beautiful. I’m new to turning so I enjoy watching videos to pick up ideas and learn different techniques. I hit myself in the forehead when you used the scrap block to remove your chuck …. How simple yet so effective!
    Someone mentioned that your lathe was making a noise, I agree with them and don’t want you to have to put up with it, so you can just ship to me C.O.D. 🤔😂. Actually I did not hear any noise 🤠

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol I didn't hear anything either, but with that said...My hearing is not what it used to be!
      Thank you so much Randy! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. As far as the scrap wood to remove the chuck, I've been doing that for a while now. I think using the chuck key to pry it off might damage it? I'm not sure but I don't want to take that chance.

    I remember turning a few Yo-Yos after watching your other video. I remember weighing each side several times to get them the same weight. Can't remember how I mounted the sides on the lathe for sure, but I think I used a homemade screw chuck.

      Turns out my memory is worse than I thought. Just found a couple pictures of the Yo-Yo recipients when they were given them and it was way back in December of 2012, over ten years ago. I must have made them after watching Frank's video. Can't be certain but I may have used a pen mandrel to mount the sides on the lathe. We have been watching your videos for many, many years starting with the Delta variable speed (I think that was the brand) lathe right up to now. I rewatched your "scrap challenge" and Frank's Yo-Yo videos last night and I know I had watched yours previously, but TH-cam's watch history doesn't have it or hundreds of other videos of yours that we have watched but Frank's video was in the history. If you take the heart away, I'll understand. 😉

    How do you compare the Walrus oil/Pens plus finish to the Howard’s Feed-n-Wax finish? That bocote looks fantastic

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! The Walnut oil and Howards are about the same. The Walnut oil just goes further because it's a liquid. The Pens plus has a gloss finish, and the other two don't. I like them all!

  • @jstarr3676

    Question about the Niles mandrel. 1. Which one did you get, I see alot on their site. 2. Do you have to thread the hole you make to put the wood on it?

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are only four mandrels on the website. They all have the same 3/8" x 16 stud. You just get the mandrel that fits your lathe. The stud has a flute on it so you can cut the threads with it.

    What is the advantage of sanding an oiled surface? I've never seen that done before.

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I sand with Walnut oil. It's putting the finish on and capturing all the fine dust at the same time. It's better to use a mesh sandpaper though. The paper sandpaper will clog up really fast. I hope that helps.

    • @CarlJacobson
      @CarlJacobson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the screw would work, it just doesn't give you much room to turn the sides and sand them. I think the bottle stopper mandrel would work better because of the size. It gives you a lot more room to work around the back.
