Apparently execs told Timm and Dini that an episode about two women wouldn’t get 12 year old boys interested. Dini said “You don’t know 12 year old boys very well.”
The scene of the frat boys wasn't in the original script, but was a later addition by director Boyd Kirkland. "The girls are tooling around town and they pull up at the intersection next to the car with the guys who are hooting and hollering at them and such. Harley pulls out her bazooka and blows up their car. My wife laughed her head off at that sequence. It's what every woman would love to do."
The episode that launched a million shippers.😅 Seriously though I directly credit this episode for so heavily popularizing the Harley/Ivy pairing, largely because it was clearly a healthier relationship than Harley with Joker.
@@horrorbuff7803 What really did it was the Batman Adventures comic book. They did more stories with the two, where their relationship leaned a lot more intimate. They even had Batgirl wonder if they were lesbians.
Yep. When hooking up with the homicidal misanthropic eco-terrorist is the better option. The Joker is always in a class by himself. Mostly because he kills or mentally destroys everyone else there.
Paul Dini has retold the story of pitching this episode as such, "I stuck my head in Alan Burnett's office one day and said I wanted to do Thelma & Louise with Harley and Ivy. He said 'I like it!' I thought the two of them would make an interesting pair. You have Harley who is an 'enabler' who lets the Joker do awful things to the world as well as to her. And you have Ivy who takes no crap whatsoever, least of all from a man."
I think Paul Dini said that the more he wrote stories with Harley and Ivy together, the more he could see them being a couple. However, he couldn't actually do it because the network wouldn't let him. That's why I think there's sort of hints towards it, like with the two of them wearing just T-shirts and underwear in their house. I know in the episode 'Holiday Knights' from the new batman adventures there's another moment like that.
According to Bruce Tim & Paul Dini, there was a moment in this episode that was cut by the censers which showed Harley & Ivy wearing each other’s shirts, implying they were sleeping together, so these 2 were romantic couples from day 1!
my favorite episode! and showcases where harley gets her suped up abilities added on to her already impressive skills! and the ep that started their friendship
This is without a doubt for the fans of the female rogues in the universe. Harley being a new character. Ivy being straight from the comics. But making up a pretty good pair. Much of a match against Batman, Joker and any other dude period. Also this certainly brings across (for the first time), the abusive relationship that between Joker & Quinn. Obviously this leads to the point that no abusive relationship is ok. Even if it's considered a hallmark. In hindsight, this also shows that Harley & Ivy are definitely beloved as an team-up in future stories (animated or comics).
According to Paul Dini, this was meant to be the first prime time episode. "Fox was going to run it. Then a Fox executive saw it and said 'What the hell is this? Batman's not in this episode. He's only in it at the end? The whole episode is two girls running around in their underwear. There's no boy appeal here.' I said, 'Well maybe not any boys you know.' They refused to run it in prime-time. Their idea of a perfect show is 'I Am the Night.' That meets their criteria. It's dark and grim, with more of an adult feel and Robin was in it."
This is one of my top ten episodes of the series. I love this pair and it makes since that people ship them together. They both hate men but Harley is so crazy she goes back to the joker every time.
Well, Ivy hates humans in general but makes an exception for Harley. While the latter never said she hated men. Paul Dini simply wanted to make his own version of Thelma & Louise.
Boyd Kirkland has expressed surprise that Bs&P didn't kill this episode. "I don't know how we got away with the episode," the director said, "because the whole underlying subtext of this show is this abusive relationship between the Joker and Harley. She just keeps coming back for more."
I like how this episode boils down to, essentially, that one doobus goobus parody of Harley and ivy "Why do you like him" "1) because he's the joka and 2) he's the joka baby" "OMGHARLEYWHATISWRONGWITHYOU, YOU LIKE HIM BECAUSE OF THAT STUPID MEME??!!" "Yes, that is verbatum the logic"
@@Mercurial_PhoenixNo one said it was. The DCAU is still their peak media next to The Dark Knight, Arkham games, and their early 2010s animated films. I’m glad James Gunn is taking notes from those cartoons for his DCU. Nothing will ever top Batman: TAS as far as animated superhero shows go even tho I love Invincible, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Teen Titans, Avengers: EMH, X-Men: TAS, & TMNT 2003. We can still give Harley Quinn its flowers as it’s honestly DC’s best animated show since Young Justice, plus it gets to push the boundaries a bit more, being TV-MA.
@@SpiritxEnigma I don't get the appeal of the Harley show. Swearing in every sentence doesn't make it funny. It's just annoying how it's getting attention, while reactors are sleeping on the DCAU.
It is very interesting to see your joint reaction to the films Batman Unlimited: Animal Instincts and Batman Unlimited: Monster Mayhem. These are cool movies 👍👍👍
Y'all are watching the episodes out of the original order because after the Laughing Fish episode the Joker does not make his appearance until quite some time afterwards.
They're watching it in the broadcast order (It states in the info bit that they're using HBO Max to watch it). How it was originally aired on it's first run and some sources still use that. I prefer production order because it makes more sense and was intended by the creators. And as you say, there was a big gap between Laughing Fish (episode 34 on production order) and Harley & Ivy (episode 56 on production order). But they've been doing the broadcast order for almost a year now so we just accept it. It's not that important. :)
I remember watching this as a kid and the joker would punch, beat up and throw things at Harley Quinn 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂. I wonder if they will show that side in the joker 2.
A lot of later media attempted to either recreate this episode or expand on its premise. And all of it never even came close. Much of it is awful. The rest is meh. Harley was at her best in the DCAU. Despite her popularity she's never been as good since. Also, while it was fun in the early going, Poison Ivy's association with Harley has ultimately hurt her as a character over the years as well.
Ah yes, the episode of the Toxic Feminist being hypocritical (but when are they not), bitching, complaining, hating men and masculinity, were convenience and assumption are key & The Toxic Hopeless Romantic in love with the Toxic Psychopath as usual. I was waiting for Eric to hear the One driver yelling after the chase scene, the Joker Socks line & the scream when he saw the news papers. Hilarious.🤣
Harley and Ivy was never romantic they were just good friends and even like sisters but never romantic , that happened over time due to fans fetishes and what not🤦♀️

Love seeing Harley and Ivy together and this is the first time we see how abusive Joker can be I think,

9:38 lol I love batman's actual 'freaked out' voice in this scene. Usually his so stoic and reserved but here it's like "oh shit. Are you effin dumb"
The episode that launched a million shippers.😅
Seriously though I directly credit this episode for so heavily popularizing the Harley/Ivy pairing, largely because it was clearly a healthier relationship than Harley with Joker.
To be fair that is not too hard to do
It's funny I don't think that Bruce tim intended for them to be a couple or a ship. It just spontatniously happened and now he supports it lol
@@horrorbuff7803 What really did it was the Batman Adventures comic book. They did more stories with the two, where their relationship leaned a lot more intimate. They even had Batgirl wonder if they were lesbians.
@@gryphman That comic is an excellent companion to the show. Had a ton of great stories and the art was usually on point too.

That "here's the paddle" scene is one of my favorite Harley Quinn scenes of all time.
For me "And here's the paddle!" is one of the most iconic scenes of series. That's been burned into my brain since I was a kid.

With Batman escaping, it has been said that Zatana's father taught Bruce how to be an escape artist.
Possibly the most important or influential BTAS episode of them all!
Idk why, but Ivy’s run is so funny to me.
Boyd Kirkland has listed this episode as one of his favorite episodes he worked on, citing "it's light-hearted fun, and it's great animation."
The fact that a 1993 episode of a 'kids cartoon' had such blatant suggestive representation in it is pretty astounding. And awesome. :)

There's also another moment in "Mad Love", but I don't wanna spoil it just in case.
The sharks didn’t eat Joker in the last episode because they knew he’d taste funny…
9:30 “They’re young. They’ll walk again . . . but they’ll be scared, won’t ya, punks!?”
It’s so great seeing Harley and Ivy together!!
The start of great team up that lead to an even better relationship, Harley and Ivy
The first Team up episode with harley and ivy nice

Harley being a new character.

I always forget how funny Alfred is 😂😂😂
And thus a fan favorite ship was born.
The beginning of the friendship that created its own spinoff... and the start of Joker being increasingly abusive of poor Harley.
The tow cable reference is even funnier because it's Mark Hamill's line.

Ivy definitely kicked Joker in the balls, which is why his "get 'em" was so weak and higher pitched
