Grady Smith I have plenty of issues with Phil and he has gotten things wrong because he's human but he's a good dude and he really does care about context and objectivity. And it's the mentioning of context that gives me hope in TH-cam's statement. We have a very real context issue in the Western world at the moment. The worst offenders can be the greatest force to change back to a context-based and objective method of reporting. They must if we are to survive. But MSM is still pedaling the narrative about being under attack while they act wholly irresponsible.

IMO Phil, your videos (and your format) are better than most professional news outlets out there. Much of national news is anchors briefly telling you facts and opinions, maybe a little background info. *Sometimes* they get the whole story, but most often with a certain political slant. You always lead us through the research to see how things connect together, and come to our own conclusions, usually without much bias. It's a deeper dive on fewer news topics, less bull. In other words, I am also curious on how this will play out. It won't change my opinions of the big network news outlets though.

I'm skeptical and don't give full trust to any of the news sources that Phil showed, but I don't think the goal is to censor any dissent. Technically, but not really when it comes to the supreme court. They INTERPRET the law, and when they do that their biases can show because there's no such thing as a completely unbiased person.

Their interpretation can be legally binding for cases in the futures, thus that interpretation of the law becomes the law itself. How judges interpret the text of the constitution and certain laws affects how they judge cases. So it's not necessarily political bias leaking into decision making (although that will definitely be prevalent in certain areas), but it's mainly differing interpretations due to the text having a certain amount of vagueness or particular wording

That's the best way to understand it's intent when it was written and how to apply it to current situations. Also, amendments are law. Therefore the judges can base their decisions on Amendments. You don't believe just any web page or video that says what you want to hear. Skepticism is a good thing, but only when it is informed skepticism. As much as the post-truthers want you to doubt the big organizations, their track record for accurate reporting it still much higher than anyone else. Personally, I prefer to pursue rationalism. Because skepticism leaves you questioning everything, and never being sure. Rationalism just uses the information available to try and construct an accurate picture of the world around you, while fighting bias both in the outside world, and within ourselves. Sorry for such a long post, but I really hate to see people who are asking "how do we know what's true?" It bothers me that our education system has so failed to explain these things.

Mike I get what you're saying, but I don't think that is what will happen (at least right now). If something is favorable to the state, then the news is favorable to the people in charge. It'll paint them in a good light whether they deserve it or not. So in the current atmosphere, you would have to say mainly good things about Trump and his administration. But nearly all the sites mentioned were liberal, who are against Trump. So they won't be filtering out anything that isn't favorable to the government.

The comparison of cable providers and internet providers is interesting to me. Cable providers can control what they show, whereas internet providers can't. The problem with this comparison is that people don't really like cable television anymore for that exact reason, entertainment is moving online extremely quickly, and i believe that is due to the unrestricted variety that the Internet provides. Making the internet like cable would effectively remove all individual forms of self expression, and lower the Internet down to the level of cable television, while also driving shady practices that attempt to steer around the regulations.

Kavanaugh's answer is daunting and confusing to people who are blind with rage at the current administration...but his answer was clear. The previous ruling on Roe v. Wade is the presiding and unaltered ruling in that case. It is thereby case law and can't be "undone" which is why he said he would follow the ruling of Roe v. Wade...because he's legally obligated to. His personal opinions don't matter. He is constitutionally required to abide by established case law. Period. End of discussion.
He said he would follow Roe v Wade when he was sitting on a lower court - those courts are obligated to follow the Supreme Court's precedent. If he is sitting on the Supreme Court though there is no such thing as precedent - it is up to the Supreme Court to evaluate each case and decide on a ruling and set the standard for all other courts in the country, so although his answer made perfect sense when he was on a lower court, now that he is sitting on the Supreme Court it doesn't say anything, so we don't know his position - since his job now is not to follow but to lead.

Most experts in the matter expect Roe V Wade to be effectively overturned at some point in the next several years with perhaps rulings that contain a fig leaf to pretend that it isn't being overturned or perhaps a ruling that directly returns the matter to the states. Case law can indeed be undone and it happens all the time. Those who want the ruling gone are strongly motivated and have been playing the long game. Notice the percentage of highly placed judges who are catholics and hold strongly to the ruling from the pope on the matter.
In any elected office it is important to know/understand what an individuals position is on matters important to those that will be represented. IMO Phil, your videos (and your format) are better than most professional news outlets out there. Much of national news is anchors briefly telling you facts and opinions, maybe a little background info. *Sometimes* they get the whole story, but most often with a certain political slant. You always lead us through the research to see how things connect together, and come to our own conclusions, usually without much bias. It's a deeper dive on fewer news topics, less bull.
In other words, I am also curious on how this will play out. It won't change my opinions of the big network news outlets though.

Technically, but not really when it comes to the supreme court. They INTERPRET the law, and when they do that their biases can show because there's no such thing as a completely unbiased person.
Judges do actually make some laws in a sense, in terms of their interpretation of the text in making decisions. Their interpretation can be legally binding for cases in the futures, thus that interpretation of the law becomes the law itself. How judges interpret the text of the constitution and certain laws affects how they judge cases.
So it's not necessarily political bias leaking into decision making (although that will definitely be prevalent in certain areas), but it's mainly differing interpretations due to the text having a certain amount of vagueness or particular wording

As for the rest of what you say: how do you think Phil does it? You don't just trust one source. You look at a bunch. And you stick with the ones that have a track record of reporting accurately. You don't believe just any web page or video that says what you want to hear.
Skepticism is a good thing, but only when it is informed skepticism. As much as the post-truthers want you to doubt the big organizations, their track record for accurate reporting it still much higher than anyone else.
Personally, I prefer to pursue rationalism. Because skepticism leaves you questioning everything, and never being sure. Rationalism just uses the information available to try and construct an accurate picture of the world around you, while fighting bias both in the outside world, and within ourselves.
Sorry for such a long post, but I really hate to see people who are asking "how do we know what's true?" It bothers me that our education system has so failed to explain these things.

I think the “fake news protections” are a sly way to filter out (eventually) views that aren’t favorable to the state. That’s not me advocating for fake news or wacky conspiracy theories. I just think you have to look at the slippery slope aspect.
Mike I get what you're saying, but I don't think that is what will happen (at least right now). If something is favorable to the state, then the news is favorable to the people in charge. It'll paint them in a good light whether they deserve it or not. So in the current atmosphere, you would have to say mainly good things about Trump and his administration. But nearly all the sites mentioned were liberal, who are against Trump. So they won't be filtering out anything that isn't favorable to the government.

The comparison of cable providers and internet providers is interesting to me. Cable providers can control what they show, whereas internet providers can't. The problem with this comparison is that people don't really like cable television anymore for that exact reason, entertainment is moving online extremely quickly, and i believe that is due to the unrestricted variety that the Internet provides. Making the internet like cable would effectively remove all individual forms of self expression, and lower the Internet down to the level of cable television, while also driving shady practices that attempt to steer around the regulations.

Because Fox News tells conservatives what they want to hear. Thus confirmation bias is in full swing and they are deemed to be "truthful" dispite reality proving otherwise. You can't trust extremely ideological people to think critically. It's literally impossible. They only want to hear what confirms their view of the world and will ignore anything that goes against it. This is extremely prevalent in politics.

Kavanaugh's answer is daunting and confusing to people who are blind with rage at the current administration...but his answer was clear. The previous ruling on Roe v. Wade is the presiding and unaltered ruling in that case. It is thereby case law and can't be "undone" which is why he said he would follow the ruling of Roe v. Wade...because he's legally obligated to. His personal opinions don't matter. He is constitutionally required to abide by established case law. Period. End of discussion.

He said he would follow Roe v Wade when he was sitting on a lower court - those courts are obligated to follow the Supreme Court's precedent. If he is sitting on the Supreme Court though there is no such thing as precedent - it is up to the Supreme Court to evaluate each case and decide on a ruling and set the standard for all other courts in the country, so although his answer made perfect sense when he was on a lower court, now that he is sitting on the Supreme Court it doesn't say anything, so we don't know his position - since his job now is not to follow but to lead.

Notice the percentage of highly placed judges who are catholics and hold strongly to the ruling from the pope on the matter.
In any elected office it is important to know/understand what an individuals position is on matters important to those that will be represented. I am pleased that our reprentatives are doing their job in asking question that their constituents want to know. It's no different when the Democrats are in office; would you feel differently if a Republican Senator asked a Liberal nominee their personal stance on Roe v. Wade? Likely not... for those who cannot see why voting is important open your eyes and understand your voting PRIVILEGE/POWER.

In regards to Row v Wade, his personal opinions shouldn't matter if he is on the record about obeying the precedent.
Sometimes your personal opinions have to be put aside.
The problem with that is the world doesn't always work that way. History shows that Justices vote with their beliefs quite often.
History shows that liberal justices tend to vote with their beliefs quite often, which is why so many large sweeping decisions are passed by liberals. Republicans tend to be more textualist on average. Of course, those are just averages and don't apply to everyone, but they are predictable ta least.
The issue is that now he'll be in a position to change R v. W. So if that's possibility is presented to him, will he stand by his saying that there's a precedent for it and it should stand, or will he vote overturn it? Because if he would it would be one hell of a picture. Because it would be five old men deciding to take rights away from women.
