Joe, "never a lender or a borrower be" its an old moral but very relevant when you have brothers. I speak from experience with my younger brother; my tool box was always being raided, words were often said when i caught him. It kept the family swear duck busy.
Volkswagon engines never let you down! That's why the VW Camper was the most popular in it's day 😊 - and still sought over!

Weld through primer/cold galvaniseing spray is good to use on bare metal. And doesn't soak in moisture as much. So might be able to be left longer between jobs and before finish primer and top coat

Hi Matey. It took me 8 years to restore my Morris Minor and hand painted it with a brush. If you have to work outside like I did and have no tools or time . I would drop the price and sell it as a project. Cut your loses . The interior wood is horrid. My Morris I had to replace Horse hair in seats etc. Replace door panels with wood. When finished I just broke even on money. Time is more important than money. Old George.

So I got to thinking about your welder, and the hard time you had welding with it. Is it a mig welder that uses shielding gas? And you tried running flux core through it? If so you probably need to switch the Pos and Neg cables around so the Neg is on the gun side for Flux Core wire. Most people even pros don't run Flux Core much so they don't know to check the cable set up. Good luck with the rebuild.

Jenolite , £33 per litre... goes a long way , and super easy to use

Where can you get those in the UK?
Id try a specialist fastener shop. Surely square drive screws are available there. Im in New Zealand and they're everywhere. @chrisrand5185
