Agreed, I feel like as much as there was no other way to make a good video about obra dinn, this video is a complete spoiler of so many amazing things in the game
Return of the Obra Dinn is one of those games that made me sad when I finished. Sad because I know I'll never be able to play it for the first time again.
It's a fundamental part of any mystery game. My first real eye opening experience with them was Outer Wilds & I loved how that concept of "first times only" fits into the narrative itself. If you haven't played it, I can't recommend it any more highly. The more you look up about it, the worse your experience will be.
One of my favorite touches are the watch hands. The hour hand points to the chapter number of the death, and the minute hand to which death within the chapter.
One of my favourite source of small details in this game is the final insurance report at the very end. The exponential difference between the amounts given to a victim's next-of-kin vs. the amount paid out for the loss of material is commentary how little these sorts of companies value human life. To them, a rich person's belongings are vastly more valuable than a poor person's life. One can also see the brutal black-and-white logic of how the company handles the consequences of people's actions, even if unintentional. There is the one guy who is attempting to shoot the [spoiler] during the [spoiler] but accidentally hits another member of the crew, killing them. The only way to complete the second guy's entry to blame this death on the first guy. This is despite the fact that the second guy is already bleeding out from a wound, and the first guy couldn't have known that anyone was in his line of fire. This ultimately causes the first guy's family to not receive any payout from the insurance, because he was a "murderer."
SPOILERS IN MY RESPONSE SO PROCEED CAREFULLY: I took this option too thinking this was the right/only solution during my first playthrough. But then I looked it up online, and turns out the game accepts an alternate response where the guy's killer is the kraken. There are actually multiple instances where the game accepts more than one answer, some in cases of ambiguous causes of death, some urging the player to make their own decision on "responsibility" (another great example is the firing squad scene, where you can "correctly" place the blame on the person who made the killing shot, or the captain who gave the order).
I know that some deaths can be attributed differently. But in the case I was referencing, the only way to complete the entry is to say he was shot by his crewmate. I know this because it was one of the last fates I found in the game, and I tried every which way to say the [spoiler] killed him before I crawled through the scenes and found the angle showing him getting shot. I also just verified in the wiki that this is indeed the only way to complete the entry.
@@Vegitofi No, a musket. In one of the scenes, a sailor gets stabbed by one of the [spoilers]. He drags himself out of the fight and around the corner, but is accidentally shot through the bulkhead by another sailor who was still fighting. If you want to look it up in the game or wiki, the characters I am referring to are Zungi Satha (victim) and Charles Miner ("murderer").
@@CabbageLiqueur Then we're talking about two different cases. The one I had in mind was when you could pin the deaths by cannon of Christian Wolff and George Shirley on either Abraham Akbar or the kraken.
Man that reveal on Abigail's skeleton of the kraken and the reveal on Zungi Sathi's corpse, looking through a peephole at the orlop deck of the spider monster's is still the craziest parts of the game. Wish i could experience it again. And the 3 fate system is genuis because you can pair 2 fates youre sure of with 1 fate you not so sure of to confirm the latter.
This is one of my favourite games of all time, and the experience was made even better by the fact I was playing this together with my 7 friends all in the same room. Everyone had such different areas of expertise that it was truly a joy to see what kind of details everyone was paying attention to, on top of being able to discuss and theorise together. If you haven't played this game yet and have the luxury of being able to play it with friends, I HIGHLY recommend giving it a go!
The despair that settled on my soul when the game ended and the realization I could never experience Obra Dinn, not only for the first time but anything like it ever again.
Just gotta say, I played Return of The Obra Dinn asometime last year, or the year before? And it was really one of the best gaming experiences I've had in a long time. Nothing matches the same vibe and and aura that this game exudes.
@ I did! Not much of it unfortunately, though it also had a strong vibe and aesthetic in it. The Obra Dinn had such a great mystery to follow and that energy persisted, while man, Paper’s Please, so stressful, so bleak. It felt very smothering in its presentation which was so awesome

@forgetfulstranger main issue is I don't have the money to buy a console or PC ATM. When I do, I will definitely be getting into them, after all this time. Lol.
No. There is a different between a story and a game. This is a story, not a game. The 2 media can exist within the same production. But they are inherently different. @@asluckdespairs Although I do agree with your assesment of story/game this IS a game. This is heavily a puzzle game. This isnt a walking sim; you cannot just experience this game as a story. The player controls may be simply walking and using your journal but the experience consists heavily of cerebral work that you have to do outside of the games interface. The even more hated than that we have the backtracking! This could have been a quick QOL then where you can skip right to a location/timeline with a single click in your book but no I have to walk all over the ship clicking on one person to move to the next location then click on the next and the next and some of them are really finicky so if your not standing in just the right spot you can’t trigger them, mystery games tend to be really bad at this with some like the Sherlock Homes games been so slow to get about that I just gave up especially as the puzzle part wasn’t that strong either at least the Obra Dinn doesn’t lack there or in the completely batpoop storyline I can’t could the number of times I was like “”wait WHAT!!! Where did that come from?”” Especially when it starts of with a simple murder?death?retaliation? Then it goes on to well act 5 and your like “”… how the heck do I put this in my report without been sent to the loony bin?”” Or if your lucky they may just think your drunk 😅
I think the title isn't the best, I didn't think it were about a game review but instead some wider analysis. Had I known what it were about I'd have watched it yesterday...
The only flaw I can find to this game is the secret scenes of the true ending, it's so anticlimactic. The ending itself is okay, but the last few scenes on the ship are just meh. And that's really surprising considering how well the game manages to surprise, shock and intrigue you in most other scenes. The final pieces of a mystery puzzle should be revelatory, they should change our understanding of all previous events so far, not just check a few boxes and call it a day. The game is great, I don't even think it's an issue with the story itself, it's a matter of how the player perceives it. I really think that if you just switched the "order" of a few scenes and saved the cool reveals for the end, the game would be perfect.
Damn it, I knew I should've played this game, now there's a Ghostcharm video on it. Hey, Ghostcharm, mind if I save this vid for a later day after I've played this game?
Have you considered doing telltale's twd s1 for hero and villainpedia? Lee would be an excellent hero and the family in ep2 would be a interesting villain group
I feel bad that I have to leave the video so quickly but I need to play this myself. Sorry for poor retention. I hope the comment helps offset it in the algorithm
I really want to watch this but still haven't finished this game even after a couple years. But now I have a fire under my ass to finish it so I can watch this.
I would honestly love to watch the rest of the video and hear your thoughts, but you didn't tell the audience to go and play it themselves before revealing signifcant plot points. The scene where the kraken is revealed is not at all a minor spoiler in my opinion, and you can very easily deprive people of the experience of such a great game by not being careful about that sort of thing.

Voice acting is top notch!
Awesome video of one of my top 10 favorite games of all time 👍
A fantastic video promoting one of the best Mystery, hell video games of all time.
If you haven't played echo night, it is a fun horror/puzzle game with a mystery to boot!
Damn it, I knew I should've played this game, now there's a Ghostcharm video on it.
Hey, Ghostcharm, mind if I save this vid for a later day after I've played this game?
What is the song you hear in the first seconds of the video and in the background?
I love this game, I hope I can experience it again sometime when I have largely forgotten about things.
Also, CAPTAIN DID IT!.
Back with another bangerrr
I really want to watch this, but no spoilers
I have yet to play the game since I’m busy with Outer Wilds right now.
Ghost is the kind of guy you want to talk about every game ever made
Have you considered doing telltale's twd s1 for hero and villainpedia? Lee would be an excellent hero and the family in ep2 would be a interesting villain group
THIS GAME IS SO UNDERRATED! Very much a game you play once.
I feel bad that I have to leave the video so quickly but I need to play this myself. Sorry for poor retention. I hope the comment helps offset it in the algorithm
Don’t be sorry. Enjoy the game!
But if we’re both here on the deck… who’s driving the ship??
Thanks for the upload!
Ghostcharm in 2025? Let's go! But this will be very interesting and enjoyable to watch.
Man whenever stuff happens at sea it's usually blamed on the Kraken bet she didn't do anything. Dolphins are always the culprit.
Babe wake up another Ghostcharm video hath arrived.
This will make work go by faster
I really want to watch this but still haven't finished this game even after a couple years.
But now I have a fire under my ass to finish it so I can watch this.
Ghostfans search for The story of the Coldain by Sage Freke. It’s a good EverQuest lore story. The intro of this video reminded me of it.
Lucas Pope is a genius.
