I'm a guitar teacher. A damn good one. You're a damn gooder one. I too hate that everyone keeps teaching solos wrong. Ten minutes ago I gave up on learning this solo by ear and searched for a lesson. Hurt the pride but I'm glad I found this video.
Thanks! That means SO much! I promise I will get more videos on here just as quickly as possible. Still working hard to get my son's medical situation stabalized, but I miss posting these videos SO MUCH, and hope everyone will continue to be patient with me :-)
Can anyone actually give this a Thumbs Down??? It's tremendous and is as thorough as every TH-cam guitar lesson on here should be..... Steve offers unbelievable patience and accuracy for those that want to work and get it perfect..... for 30 years this solo (and even the intricate chord timing to this song) have absolutely baffled me!! In a couple of days I will have this clean, precise version in my bag of tricks. Thank you, Steve!!
All TH-cam video creation for me has been postponed until my son is released and deemed cured of his Leukemia, and nearly all video creation stopped upon his diagnosis 4 years ago, with only a couple of exceptions...
Steve, Thanks so much for the great lesson. Love the incremental steps building up to the complete solo, then the build up of speed. I must have played this lesson a few dozen times already! Very well done.
Best guitar lesson experience at TH-cam. Great pace, solo a 100 percent correct note by note, and being able to practice at 50, 75 and 100 percent (with him playing at the same time) is awesome. Thank you sir!
@SteveHacker , Thanks for your time and effort presenting this video. I happened upon this video some 6 weeks ago. Loved it and your teaching; Wanted to share it with a friend I am mentoring, but lost the link. Just found it again and I am quite pleased. I am an experienced player and an old curmugeon but I am not a teacher. I feel comfortable telling a friend to watch, listen and learn from this video. Sincerely Larry
Steve. Outstanding. Nailed it on the head. Nothing cliche or overplayed about it. Best song for teaching phrasing, and probably more important, teaching how to get three guitars to play together and behave themselves.
I just joined a country band that plays all "new" country. But, Sweet Home Alabama is a staple they have in the mix. I love your video. It is NOT too fast. It is just right. I love the way you build the progression then play it all through at increasing speeds. Very thorough AND accurate. Kudos my friend. One of THE best instructional videos I've seen. I'd love to learn the rest of the leads in this song from you.
Maybe some People think it's a small thing, but I'm really pissed of by many tutorials that simply don't sound right- even here in Serbia we can here when the Tone isn't right, ESP in those Videos where "the Teacher" told too much rubbish and bad Jokes...this One is different of majority, clear and accurate and detailed- just what tutorial should be, even better than just that. I join the prayer for your Family...hope you will make many more of these.
Steve, I've been playing for over 35 years. This is by far the best tutorial I have seen on the web. You are an exceptional teacher. Keep up the great work my friend.
Steve, I have been playing for years but only chords and your video gives me inspiration to learn lead and solos, great job. I look forward to when you have the next lesson up when you have the time. Hope the son is doing well. Thanks for the inspiration.
OK folks, I listen to a lot of these videos. This is the best I've seen yet. Why? Some guys play well but have the disortion turned up so much you can hardly hear the notes. Aside from playing this very well, Steve repeats each section multiple times from the beginning at slow, medium, and standard speeds. He adds just the right amount of notes for each repetition. Thanks Steve, great job and thanks for sharing.
HI Steve. Great lesson! I can't agree more with you about this song. There is so much more going on there than many people comprehend. I have listened to this song with a degree of fascination since the first time I heard it back in '74. Still fascinates me with all the guitar nuances and intricacies. It is truly a work of art. Thanks for this video. You must be an awesome teacher! Kudos to you. Rick
Great lesson, well explained step by step, and the half and three quarter speed practice sessions are a great idea. Will be looking out for more videos.
Hi Steve, This is a song I have wanted to learn for many years, ever since hearing it the first time back in the early 70's in response to Niel Young's "Southern Man". To me it is one of the greatest country/blues/rock anthem ever. Your patient explanation and repetition made is "relatively" easy for me to learn the whole first solo, albeit rudimentary. I just need to get the muscle memory abd timing down a bit better. Of course practice, practice and more practice. I appreciate your excellent video.
Dude... it's so WAAAAY overplayed by bar bands but it's still my FAVORITE song in the world... You're SO right about the layers of GREAT guitar... I thought I had it T and A but you schooled me... Thanks mang!!!!!
Excellent teaching method. Particularly the replay of the solo over and over at the end. There are so many solos I would love to see you do like this. Your Listen to the music lesson is great as well.
I loved the video and I can play the first half of the solo but for the rest you just blazed through it I have watched the video multiple times and still can't get past the same spot
Steve, great lesson my friend. You made this so EASY to learn by your various speeds and easy to understand fingering positions. You are an excellent teacher and picker.
You have brilliant feel and a great teaching style. To the point and just the right amount of repeats. I play this solo in a north west england cover band and I don't quite get it right, your video will definitely help! Sorry to hear your son's been poorly, god bless and get well soon. Joe
Thanks Steve! That is a great tutorial! I have wanted to learn this for quite some time and teach my son. It is a great job. Ready for solo 2! It's time! We're ready! Thank you very much in advance.
Outstanding lesson Steve, you are absolutely correct that almost no one plays this solo right. I've been playing it wrong for years, I knew it but just couldn't quite get there. Hopefully I can master it now thanks to you. Oh, and as mentioned before, the tone is right on as well. Craig H
I'm in a band and I'm actually using this to learn the lead on the fiddle!! So awesome, best tutorial I've seen so far. Please post more!! THanks so much!!
Hi Steve, I learn a whole lot, have not practice it yet, but hopfully will when I have the time, I want to take the time to thank you for this video for all of us. I greatly appreaciate it. Keep it up, your a great guitarist. and by the way that is the guitar that I am thinking of buying. It sounds really cool!!
You now have a new subscriber. I tried to learn this song by tab years ago and struggled. This lesson was perfectly structured and it's the quickest and most accurate I have learnt a solo in years, Thank you :D
Same goes for me Steve, I pray (and thus trust!) that your son will fully recover this awful desease. Meanwhile, thank you for this very good instruction video. Yes, there are parts that my fingers yet can't play, but with these fantastic electronic tools we have nowadays (in contrary to the time when I began playing) it's just a matter of practice and someday I'll grasp it. Many thanks again and the best for your boy!
Thank you, I've learned this from you. I hope your son is doing well? My daughter was recently diagnosed with leukemia so we're just starting the process. I'll pray for your son. Jesus has been faithful to us through out this.
Thanks for the lesson Steve, great comments at the start, I love to get stuck into it and just pause and rewind to pick up extra every time. Very sorry to hear about your battles, I hope things are looking up, Deano.
You nailed it and you're absolutely right - hardly anyone plays this song correctly. I've even heard professional cover bands in clubs (seasoned musicians, we're talking about), do a slop job and get the guitar work wrong. I'm a purist about this kind of thing. By all means, play it man, but get it right. And none of this, "Oh, well I play it using my own style." BS! It's great to see a guitarist approach this song professionally! Way to go!
thanks so much i wanted to learn but never even knew where to start!!!! this is awesome i've always wanted to be able to go crazy like that up in the high frets!
Really great video! was just searching around learning some solos and this one popped up and i have to say it has been the most thought out and best taught one ive found!
Thanx Steve! that was awesome! i was looking for this solo just the way you explain it and show it!! I just play by ear and i cant even read a tab LOL! thanx for doing this and hope you uploud the rest of the song. Sorry for my english Greeting from PARAGUAY!
I really liked the gradual tempo increase at the end. It allows for a repetitive practice of the solo. And the Boom! Do it at 100% tempo several times in order to master the solo. Well done Steve!
The incredible thing is that it takes genius to create such a brilliant lick in the first place. The sad truth is that for the great majority of us, we will only know the joy of listening to it. Some of us are talented enough to copy it. Precious few are capable of actually creating such musical beauty where none existed before. Talent makes the difficult seem easy, genius performs the impossible. It reflects the mind of God.
Steve you're a legend mate. You make it easy for us beginners to learn the solo's we all strive to play when we're just starting out. I've played piano for years and I wish I could take it all back and put that time into guitar cos damn guitar is so much nicer. You keep up the good work and just know that it's appreciated around the world. Thanks again buddy!
Look no further folks. This, hands down, is the best lesson for this part anywhere.
In my humble opinion this is the best teaching lesson on how to play this I have ever seen, great!!!!!
I'm a guitar teacher. A damn good one. You're a damn gooder one. I too hate that everyone keeps teaching solos wrong. Ten minutes ago I gave up on learning this solo by ear and searched for a lesson. Hurt the pride but I'm glad I found this video.

Thank you very much of France. Very brilliant as explanation. Thank you again
The best break down I've ever seen. It's a fantastic way to build the lick. Thanks for your time and your talent is appreciated.
God bless you and your son.
Sweet home Alabama can never be worn out.
Ive been playing this wrong for 30 years.....Finally learned the right way.....THANKS STEVE.....AWESOME TEACHING.....

You know Steve, there's like 1000 guitarist waiting for your solo number 2 lesson :-).
All TH-cam video creation for me has been postponed until my son is released and deemed cured of his Leukemia, and nearly all video creation stopped upon his diagnosis 4 years ago, with only a couple of exceptions...
Steve Hacker Good luck with that, I'm sure that goes for all of us.
