I'm not a beginner myself, but I really respect how thorough and unpretentious she is teaching songs for people of all playing ability, it's super cool
Ayla is a gifted guitar player who teaches to any level without making it about her own ability to command a song. So many teachers, even in "beginner" lessons cannot keep themselves from showing off. A teacher needs to check his or her ego at the door. I find that female teacher/players are much better at recognizing this and implementing their lessons with this in mind. Her delivery is clear, concise, and without any trace of condescension. Great job, Ayla!
Yea, but it would have been dandy to see her put it all together and jam a bit. Not to show off but just because that is a fantastic song etc. and that is what musicians do.
I'm a 64 year old. I've been playing since 1973. Ya show me stuff I've Missed. Love your Teaching . Ya brake it down Slowly. Beginner's can learn the Songs. Ya showed me Crap I've missed. Keep it up!!!!!
I’ve been playing this song for close to 40 years including a few years playing live on stage in a band and I just learned more about how to play certain parts of it properly in 13:48 than in the past 40 years. Thank you ATM 👍
Just stumbled onto this. I am a life long student of music (more than 60 years) I wish I had a teacher who approached things like this when I was a very young boy. Nice work.
At 65 and been playing for many years and still a novice, I see the thought out effort on how you teach, example, doing your best to show finger placement, incorporating very beginner to rather advanced playing, color me very impressed, and also I’ll mention your relaxed style .
I love that Ayla can be totally badass at playing yet her teaching approach puts us in a position where she clears the road to make us feel we’re heading comfortably to her level.
I’m self taught and the way you go through the 5 stages is great. Very easy to build up your technique and hit those full speed riffs in no time. You need your own show for sure
Great lesson. I am a 78 year old beginner. Actually tried playing at 16 years old, but dropped out as I had no help,or teaching. I‘m also doing the Rick Beato course, which is v good, but it‘s also v motivating to be able to play this fantastic riff, slowly and badly, but recognisable😉 I‘ll certainly follow this excellent teacher.
This style of lesson definitely works, and for someone down at the lower levels, here are several reasons why: Even your lowest levels still give the feel of the song, many beginner interpretations don't. We can see what it would take to move up to the next level and can practice those skills. We can also see what it might take to get to our eventual goal of playing a song like the original and can make the determination of how much work it would take to get closer to that if we want to go that far. Or we can decide if there's a sweet spot lower down, that we'd still be happy playing. I vote for more of these.
I totally agree with Surgeon. There's NO way to bite off this song in one chew (at least for someone at my level). Sneaking up on it helps me understand the song, not get frustrated, let me build my skills into it, and ... it's just great.
Great tutorial! What I really respect is Ayla's teaching style. She knows how to deliver in order for others to comprehend unlike instructors or so-called teachers who don't know how to teach.
As a student learning to play guitar at age 74 definitely presents its challenges, However, Ayla has a way of finding the sweet spot in teaching guitar. I'll definitely look into her course. GREAT JOB !!!
I've played guitar 60 years...and you did, today, what teachers did not do when we played that at band gigs 50 years ago! You are truly a professional!
Your “baby-steps”and “build-upon” approach to learning prevents your students from being initially overwhelmed and giving up. They are rewarded after successfully mastering each level and therefore motivated to continue refining the song further. You must admit, no subscriber has better described your teaching technique!
Great lesson. Thought I was at level 5 but had drifted away from the exact licks a little. This brought me back nicely and quickly. The Skynyrd guys always said that the reason bar bands covering their songs often sound off/wrong is they don’t get the licks the way they are on the records. It really is all in the details. I still marvel at how perfect Ed King’s signature licks were for this song when he recorded them ..48 years ago-wow. And the irony that the licks and solos in an iconic Southern rock song …were composed and played by a guitarist from Glendale, CA (LA) who didn’t care for Stratocasters much and only played one because the other LS guys played Gibsons
I love all how you break down all the subtleties (ghost notes, pinch harmonics, etc) that really make the song come alive and not sound flat. And because the lesson started explaining how the riff is based on the three chords it really makes it more approachable
I've been playing since I was 15. I'm north of 50 now, and this is first time I've seen this song broken down to such an easy way. I learned something today. Thank you.
Perfect way to teach! Best I've seen yet - I went from no-idea to level 5(ish) in 48 hours. I'm an old folk strummer from the the 70's and determined to get out of my comfort zone....
i am a begginer ... also I dont feel that my ability can grow fast.... but her teaching level blowed my mind even i can can undestand and give it a try.... THANK YOU FOR THIS SUPER CLASS lesson
Excellent lesson, starting out small and then expanding really helps the beginners so they don't lose confidence or feel frustrated right away. Keep up the great work.
This is great. I've been playing on and off for 20 years. I'm probably on the same level as someone who's played and progressed over 2 years. Now in a band. It's pushing me to learn more . This is great.
I love your '5 Level' concept. Because you very accurately break down the complexity of the song(s), and then ramp it up in intervals - in the same way most people learn when listening to others playing. At first just the rough shape of it - then building it up. It's very intuitive and at the same time teaching us the finer details with every step up. You're a gift to the scene.
My teacher threw this song at me with terrible hand written tab. This is much clearer, and methodical. You’re gonna make me look good at my next lesson! Thanks
I like your style of instruction very much. I've been playing guitar for 65 of my 71 years and you explain stuff in a way that anyone from beginner to expert can get something from. Keep up the good work 👍
I really liked this. Coming from Bass and being a Bass player I find it pretty crazy how many little tiny things happen that make such a big impact on a song that are outside the root notes. I find I keep coming back to Ayla's videos for guitar to really break things down for me.
I'm a long time Skynyrd fan and I've been playing this song for more than 40 years. This is the most technically accurate explanation of how the song really should be played. I can't tell you how many times I've butted heads-with people who think they're playing it right but never took the time to really listen to the different fills and the other subtle nuances of the song. Some people fake it with a single fill that is some weird amalgamation of notes that sort of sound like the original fills -- but that's the only fill they use. The best poor-man's way to hear the subtle differences (without reading the sheet music) is to listen to the original studio version with headphones and adjust the sound settings (equalizer) so there's practically no bass tones. it's the closest you can come to track/layer isolation (sort of) without the original raw recordings, but you can definitely hear the difference -- and it doesn't take too long to realize the fills are all different. Thank you SO much for showing the absolutely correct way to play these fills -- it will even help me say "I told you so" to the people who play it wrong :) -- except Gary Rossington. He can play it whatever way he wants...lol.
What a great way to learn a song! Been playing for over 40 years, and this is by far the best method I’ve seen to quickly learn how to play a song. Keep up the fantastic work you are doing ... and thanks!!
Started helping someone learn guitar recently, I have become very aware that I am not a guitar teacher. Your breakdowns are great at teaching me how to help someone learn. For example, level 3 to level 4. Teach them the chord so they know to get their fingers in the position and just have them strum it. Get them used to that doing that, then teach them to do the arpeggios instead of strum the chord.
My cover band of 31 years have played this song no less than 700 times. As the back-up singer, the last 400 times I shouted at the very beginning, those iconic first words: One, two, three ===> TURN IT OFF!
Yes I got my first guitar Dec.25,1965 and have played it every day since.i really enjoyed watching you show me how to play sweet home Alabama. I focused on you and heard every word said and note played ow I can play it better than ever.that was fun and you didn't waste any time to me that was perfect. Can't wait for the next session, you'll have my full undivided attention Thank you Clifford64
I gotta tell you this was great. Been playing guitar for 35 years. I never loved this song enough to want to play it even though I did learn all the parts over the years. You definitely brought it together and now I’m going to finally learn it. I always felt laying this song was a little like playing stairway to heaven. One of the greatest songs ever written but no one wants to really hear someone else play it…lol
Really enjoying your tutorials on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama and Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe" and the Jimi Hendrix 5 classic riffs. Glad some like yourself in the newer generations still appreciate the masterful guitarists of the 60's and 70's and are teaching others, including yours truly. Your 5-step process is very helpful so I hope you keep these coming. I am almost 70 now but only started learning the electric guitar when I retired a few years ago. Amazing what you can learn on TH-cam now, and your thoughtful, thorough, and precise lessons are so great. Also enjoy the interesting histories you include with your lessons. I love it! Thank you!
This is the best Sweet Home lesson that I've seen on YT. I like how you include the tablature under your fret board hand and slowly go over the fingering. That really helps. I haven't tried playing it yet, but based on what you've shown I could probably play up to about Level 2 or 3. I'd need to do a little more work on Levels 4 and 5. I've booked marked this video for future study. Thank you for this very good lesson, Ayla. 👏👏👏
These sure the same stages I went through as I learned the song from the radio decades ago. Oh how I wish you’d been around then. Your lesson is perfect and the way you walked thru it was ideal. Thank you for the hard work and patience.
48 years later here’s a nice young lady on TH-cam teaching people how to play a song released decades before she was born. There’s not a song on the charts today that will have that kind of staying power.
I've been trying to teach myself guitar for about 25 years (eek). Rhythm strumming is all I've ever really achieved, and I go years without touching a guitar. I stumbled across this video by chance and it's actually got me really excited to pick up the guitar again and give this a go, particularly as this is one of my favourite songs. Great teaching style - keep 'em coming.
I absolutely LOVE the style of teaching you do here (5 Levels Of Sweet Home Alabama) and the lesson you did on the 5 Levels of Hey Joe as well. It simply works for me, and you teach it well. But I'm 67 yrs. old, have been playing for about 55 of those years, and I find it increasingly humbling to find out just how WRONG I've been playing this song (and many others) for so long. Thank you for helping me to "connnect the dots" on ALL of the fills and details I missed years ago, and continued to play incorrectly........
I love the way you explain how and why things work . Tons of guitar teachers on internet .most can't teach. Ted Williams greatest hitter of all time. Couldn't manage.
Thanks for breaking this song down and explaining the finer points. I live on a sailboat traveling around the Bahamas and East Coast, trying to teach myself to play the guitar and this really helped with some of the nuances of guitar
I'm a beginner guitarist but piano background and this is my target "first proper song". Love this explanation and the various stages you can build up to. Excellent tutorial!
I love it. Because as a beginner I can immediately use the lesson. But the big thing for is I can use this ONE video to grow and progress as a guitarist. Thank you
Thank you very much.I love this style of learning. Your delivery/teaching is vibrant yet relaxed, and kind of light-hearted which keeps me engaged and keen to learn the next part. 😄
You have a special way to teach starting real simple then building step by step as far as your students want to or are comfortable to absorb at this moment, very easy to understand how very clever, loved it
I think this type of breakdown is great. It is nice to see the foundation built in the beginners level and how the added complexity adds to the sound to make the song what we know. Thanks
You are a wonderful teacher. You have a great demeanor and pace. I appreciate how you layered lesson to accommodate multi-levels of player. You’re a pleasure to watch and you really understand the subtleties (arpeggiating, muting, etc) of the music you are explaining. Keep up the great job.
I think that the late, great Ed King would be pleased to see the way you are teaching his masterpiece. You have something for any level of player and that is awesome. Also, a person at level 2 can hear level 4 and can aspire to reach that level, then on to level 5. Just awesome.
I have seen many turorials from pleople playing the guitar, but this is first time I see someone teaching at levels, you are really amazing! Now I understand the number of subscribers.
Original went directly to Level 5 version - struggled and close to giving up. Found your video and went quickly through all the levels. Level 5 seems realistic now. Awesome way of teaching. Subscribed!
Awesome video. Very down to Earth teaching. The only thing I would change is, I really wanted to hear her cut loose at the end. Thank you for the video.
Nicely done! I love the five levels approach. Gives the student a chance at five incremental victories instead one big fat fail. Thank you for sharing.
"Yeah, I'll say it again...." Really helpful lesson and superbly organized. I refer to this for my own guitar students for homework. And really like your shirt! Dig Porsche!
I have found about 4 different videos on how to play this song, as the beginner this is by far the simplest and easiest to understand video out there and Ayla is very good teacher. I am always coming back to your videos as they are easy to understand. Thank you! And please make more of those!
I loved this approach. I've been playing this song for about 20 years with my buddies (we're not good - we just entertain ourselves) so I pretty much know it, but I picked up a nice tip at level 4 that I think will improve my version of this song. If I hadn't known the song at all, I couldn't think of a more helpful approach to learning it. Well done.
I love ❤️ you! I love her videos. The instruction , the teaching and the music. But I never hardly watch her because she is just one of those people you can’t get out of your mind.
I wish I have the knowledge you have . The way you taught all the numbers I came across was so easy to understand. You’re one of the best guitarists I have ever known since I started learning the guitar. Absolutely wonderful.

Ayla, what an incredible lesson on an iconic set of riffs. You da bomb!!!
Hi just stumbled upon your channel. I notice your from Canada.where abouts are you as I'm a Canadian also :) great stuff
What is giving this such a full sound? Is it the strat or the amp?
Like the way you are illustrating with the use of levels. Heard your Exorcist music when you were working up a sneeze … so … what happens if you don’t pay your exorcist?

Even for an experienced (15 years now) player, this is an incredibly effective way to learn a song. Outstanding.

Ah, so that's why The Doors have chosen that name? Leave your ego at the doorstep? Sunny side of the treat, right?
Yea, but it would have been dandy to see her put it all together and jam a bit. Not to show off but just because that is a fantastic song etc. and that is what musicians do.

Bro wtf are you talking about? Are you getting offended at every tutorial cause you can't play at that level yet?
A teacher better had demonstrate his skills at times . Especially to a new student.

Honestly this is the most clear lesson of this song on TH-cam, nobody else has broken it down in such a simple way to understand.
Check out Lauren Bateman, she has a beginner lesson on this song as well as a late beginner - early intermediate level lesson. Have fun!
I’ve been playing this song for close to 40 years including a few years playing live on stage in a band and I just learned more about how to play certain parts of it properly in 13:48 than in the past 40 years. Thank you ATM 👍

Ayla is not only gifted to play the guitar but she also knows how to properly explain while making the videos fun and charming to learn.
she also has the best cover of Hey Joe I have ever heard
I’m self taught and the way you go through the 5 stages is great. Very easy to build up your technique and hit those full speed riffs in no time. You need your own show for sure

This style of lesson definitely works, and for someone down at the lower levels, here are several reasons why:
Even your lowest levels still give the feel of the song, many beginner interpretations don't.

Thank you
As a guitar instructor for beginners, your method has been most helpful. Thanks!
Great job.
Thank you very much.I love this style of learning. Your delivery/teaching is vibrant yet relaxed, and kind of light-hearted which keeps me engaged and keen to learn the next part. 😄
This way of learning, really works for me. I just have to get my guitar out before I watch your videos. Thanks!!
You have a special way to teach starting real simple then building step by step as far as your students want to or are comfortable to absorb at this moment, very easy to understand how very clever, loved it
Awesome Ma'am ❤
Im liking this instrucion.
Ive played it way wrong for 40 years!
Shes got it right.
This is how we learned when I first picked up a guitar but we didn't have the internet or tabs. Love this! Please keep these coming
Keep up the great job.
i liked the 5 levels as a new guitarist this was very helpful - the 5 levels give me a starting point and other levels to stive for
I think that the late, great Ed King would be pleased to see the way you are teaching his masterpiece.
Probably the best lesson and clear explanation of how to play the song. Definitely helping me at last, it's one i've always struggled with. Thank you
Original went directly to Level 5 version - struggled and close to giving up. Found your video and went quickly through all the levels. Level 5 seems realistic now. Awesome way of teaching. Subscribed!
oh my gosh! This is one of the best way to learn guitar! Basic and simplicity is the key and you nailed it
Hi Ayla,
It been a lifetime hobby….Your knowledge and teaching are precise and beautiful….like you!😘
Awesome video.
Well done.
Fantastic way to build up an understanding of how the song can be played. Great method for teaching. Thank you!
Beautiful video. You're a great guitarist and a sweet and humble teacher. Can't really top that.
I think Ed King himself would have enjoyed and approved!
Well done!
I’m one of the few that got his seal of approval on playing the famous riff.
