What scale sounds better to you? Also at 5:08 I have the right diagram up, but it should say D major pentatonic instead of G major pentatonic. Sorry for that. Have a rockin day everyone✌️
Not certain which one to choose, Rusty. I will try them out and analyse the sound. I have just recently taught my 10 year old great-nephew the main body of the song and I try to use it to teach him a bit of music theory. I find doing so helps him understand how and why songs use certain scales and chords. I did the same thing with Carry On Wayward Son. It has actually made me a better player to teach him because I really have to analyse the songs. Thanks Rusty.
I loved this lesson Rusty, all scales sounds awesome to my ears, 2 majors more happy/country flavour and minor more bluesy/darker/sad colour. It will be good to show details of rythmic parts and riffs. Thanks so much for this lesson! Happy to learn with you ;-)
To me D Minor is the best. I think people "hear" the song in different ways. The original solo always sounded a bit off to me, like the player was in the wrong key. Before TH-cam highlighted this mystery, In searching around the fretboard for the best key, D minor pentatonic seemed correct,
GREAT VIDEO! I happen to know Jay Rockett - he's a personal friend of mine. Thank you for plugging his Archer pedal. The Archer lines are awesome as are the rest of his products. Thanks again for this awesome video - surprised I haven't found you till now. Cheers!
Eddie was a personal friend of mine. Lived right up the street from me here in Nashville. He interpreted this song 100% in G major. He actually thought it was funny when people would play it in D. Now, Steve Gains interpreted it in D. I asked Ed one time, "As good of a guitar player that Steve was, why did he play SHA in D?" Ed simply said "I have no idea".
That is so cool man! I love the Ed King vibe, and that tune for sure! There’s many players that actually argue about this topic! But for me, I would not argue about something that sounded so good!(The Ed King Solo). Thanks so much for checking in and sharing this!Later, bro. 😎
@@rustysguitar1 Most people don't know this but Eddie and Al Kooper were very at odds on what key Ed should have played the solo in. I personally played it in D for many years. Just could not make G work for some reason. Then one day it just clicked. This was before I met Ed. Now, D sounds way off and amateur to me.
@@VPicksGuitarPicks I did hear that about Al Cooper. Honestly, I really only like to hear the solo in G major! I really appreciate you sharing the stories with me! Later, bro🤛

Hello Rusty I've been playing for 45+ years and this is the BEST guitar lesson I've ever had! Thank you. Excellent example of teaching the major pentatonic in a song, WOW!!! Just Made my Day!!!
I’m really glad to hear that Rick! This is one of the most fun lesson videos I have done. Early on, I could not get my fingers to go through the scales that way. That’s why I teach the extended Pentatonic scale so much. I really do appreciate this positive positive feedback here! Thanks a lot for checking out my video, Rick👍
You are right about the major sound! Maybe just sneak in a little minor for a second or two. Thanks a lot for checking out the video and enjoy the rest of your Sunday.🙏

Thanks a lot Crash.💥 have a great weekend buddy👍
Here's a little fun fact (at least for me!): Ed King wrote this song on his 1973 Fender Stratocaster and you can actually own this guitar for nearly half a million dollars via Carter Vintage Guitars. I happen to own this exact same guitar, same year, finish and maybe even off the same run as far as I know. To me it was just a used Fender guitar since Leo sold out his company in 1964 but if I was to sell it......I'd be hoping for around a mere 1% the price tag on Mr. King's Strat........may he of course RIP. Rusty...I recently discovered you and started with your arpeggio patterns and now this. I have been struggling to get beyond playing pentatonic scales and moving into more expressive lead licks. Somehow just these two videos have helped me break into a different space for the first time in a couple of years. Good discussion. I think shifting from D major pentatonic over the D & C Chords to G Maj pentatonic over the G chord makes the most satisfying 'solution' to my ears. There's potentially a slight clash with the F# over the I chord sounding a bit 'hokey'. But everything you played was great as good phrasing and chord tone targeting overcomes that potential clash.
Rusty Thank you for another great lesson and for sharing your set up. I personally can’t pick between the scales I think that they all fit in perfectly 👍
Hi Rusty , you've done it again . Made soloing over three straightforward chords sound brilliant. Thank you for all the tips that you give on your video, could have done with a guy like you 60 years ago but never to late .
Fantastic lesson, thanks Rusty. I’ve been playing the song in a cover band for a while now but I didn’t have a clue how to solo and improvise over the top. You’ve opened up so many possibilities. Thanks again 👌

Thanks Duane! I believe if you see it and hear it, you can play it! If you watch somebody slow things down, it will stick in your brain. Thanks for subscribing to my channel and have a great weekend.👍
Hi Rusty, I’ve really enjoyed segments where you give us a chord progression and recommend some scales. That alone helps me think less and just practice more!
If just using one scale alone I would say the G major, but the way you blended the D major and D minor really made it follow best. Definitely some great things to work on for sure. Thanks for the post. I like your relaxed approach. Something to work the mind and fingers without overcomplicating it. :)
Hey Marc, I had so much fun making this video! You can also use these ideas when improvising other solos. Happy that you liked the lesson. Have a great week 🤛
The D major sounds good to me, I really appreciate the slower speed you use to break down the licks, I can get them right then I focus on speeding up. I hope you enjoy doing these half as much as I enjoy learning with your help. Take care 😊
I’m most comfortable in D major pentatonic. Yea, make sure you have all the notes right and then build up some speed. I really had fun making this video lesson! Thanks Mike and enjoy your weekend 👍
Soloing like this is still above my pay grade, but I had to look! I like all of the scales sounds. I’ve been working on mixing major and minor sounds in a much more primitive way lately, and I really love that sound. Thank you Rusty. Cheers, Rick
Fantastic Rusty, I’ve always loved this song. I think the way that you use the D Maj & D min sounds absolutely awesome but I do favour the G Maj, I guess it just sounds better in my ears. Tomorrow, I’ll play all 3 and let you know how I get on buddy. Thanks Rusty, you & your family have a great weekend 👍🏻🏴🎸
Hey Dave, this is a fun way to practice using all three scales. He used the G major sound on the recording, so I love it also. Always good to hear from you brother. Thanks, and you guys have a great weekend also ✌️
Thanks Rusty, nice playing and lesson. This is really helpful, both scales sound great. Could you talk about Witchita Lineman sometime? It seems to go from F major to D major? Which is unusual. I am curious how you would improvise over it. Have an awesome weekend.😀
Thanks Ray. I love that song. The beginning is in the key of F but sounds like it changes to the key of G and then back to F again. So most likely I would use F major and G major pentatonic scales over that tune. I’ll have to look into it a little more though. You have a great weekend also Ray I appreciate you buddy.👍
Loved Lynyrd Skynyrd, great lesson. I just subscribed to your videos. Ed King is my favorite in the band. Loved his style. The others were great but Ed King is the best in the group.
in my 40 years of playing I never knew if that song was in D or G ? Its funny live I never felt comfortable playing that live LOL . And i would have to play real long solos , I played it in G major mostly

Hey Phil! Glad you like the lessons! I appreciate your support. Talk to you soon.👍
Fantastic lesson, thanks Rusty. I’ve been playing the song in a cover band for a while now but I didn’t have a clue how to solo and improvise over the top. You’ve opened up so many possibilities. Thanks again 👌
I know exactly what you mean! I played the notes for years, but really didn’t understand how it was put together. Thanks for checking out the video! Later bro 😎
Thx rusty ur the only guy who slows it down call out strings and frets so I can get it!ur the only one who does this this way. Thx rusty I'm subscribing now
Thanks Duane! I believe if you see it and hear it, you can play it! If you watch somebody slow things down, it will stick in your brain. Thanks for subscribing to my channel and have a great weekend.👍
So cool Rusty! your a great mentor ❤
Thanks Logan! I appreciate it 👍
Absolutely brilliant lesson Rusty, as usual.👍
Thanks a lot Stuart! Enjoy your weekend 👍
Yet another fantastic lesson!
I appreciate that Tim! Thanks so much and have a great weekend👍
Hi Rusty, I’ve really enjoyed segments where you give us a chord progression and recommend some scales. That alone helps me think less and just practice more!
Hey Jorge, sounds like you’re working on the right things! Thanks for supporting the channel! Have a great rest of your Sunday🙏
Thank You Maestro !!!
You’re very welcome! Have a great weekend👍
Hey Rick, maybe just pick one scale and try to feel it. You got this. Thanks for checking out the video Rick. Enjoy your weekend 👍
That sounds really good keep practicing I've been playing six months and it helped me have fun playing my scales from G man
Glad you liked the lesson GL! Thanks and have a rockin weekend👍
I am more of a feel player, but I have learned so much watching Rusty‘s video lessons
Thanks man! I’m happy you like the lessons! Talk to you soon👍
Yes sir take care and God bless
@@BrianVining-v6e Thank you Brian! And you also 🙏
Another superb tutorial 👍👍🎸🎸
Always appreciate it Tony! Thanks man👍
Blown away sir, great teacher you are. 👏👏👏🎸🎸
Thank you Ronnie! 👍
Lots of fun and the D is my favorite
Yes! Sounds great! Thanks so much for checking out the video, Tony🤛
Loved Lynyrd Skynyrd, great lesson. I just subscribed to your videos. Ed King is my favorite in the band. Loved his style. The others were great but Ed King is the best in the group.
Right on Frank! I love me some Ed King 🔥 Thank you for your support bro 😎
You are welcome. However you should do an instrumental version of Sweet Home Alabama. Using all the penatonic scales. You sound great.
I love the lesson and I love the tune. I remember this one way back in high school. Thanks Rusty❤
Thanks so much Sally! Have a wonderful weekend ❤️
in my 40 years of playing I never knew if that song was in D or G ? Its funny live I never felt comfortable playing that live LOL . And i would have to play real long solos , I played it in G major mostly
For years, I really didn’t realize he was playing in the key of G. At least G major pentatonic. I learned a lot just doing the video for sure. Thanks for checking out the video. Later bro 😎
@@rustysguitar1 for such an awesome musician and guitar player and now I know what a great person Im hoping for 100k subs for you ! You deserve it your content hits home i read the comments and you are reaching people , much respect . Every gig we played people wanted that song i never felt comfy playing it but you had a nice explaination and your playing on this lesson could go on the record it sounds so good ! Finally the bass player in the band refused to play it LOL ! One night we played it people were going crazy dancing and i had no clue what I was playing we had a keyboard player so I gave it to him and he nailed all the solos . Wow Im listening to you play to this as I type its perfect Rusty ! Tone is perfect too !
