I recommend sticking with the bitterness for some time till you’re ok with it. It is an acquired taste. It’s always a good idea to reduce sugar intake.
I love that people from the U.S and Europe are discovering mate! You Will not regret it! Those who are saying that is a lot of work: you are wrong! Greetings from Argentina!
I had seen a teacher at university drinking it and remembered seeing my great aunt drink it with other family members. Might see if I can find it somewhere
My friend went on exchange to Uruguay and he discovered this and brought it back. The first time I had it it was not pleasant but as I started drinking more of it it got really good and now I drink it all the time. It has replaced coffee for me because it doesn't make you crash like coffee and it has so many more nutritional benefits. Also in my own personal experience the best mate for the price is Canarias they sell it by the Kilo.
I've been drinking Yerba Mate for 10 years now and love it. I enjoy the bitterness so I don't use any sweetener. Don't miss coffee at all. You did a pretty good job of explaining the "ritual" to get a good drink.
If you live in the States and go to an Argentinean store or an Uruguayan one in big cities, you can buy 1 kilogram of yerba mate por around 12 dollars! Much cheaper than the one you bought that is very expensive in stores such as Whole Foods. I use an Uruguayan one, the name is Canarias
Your explanation is really clear and concise. I've been drinking mate for ages already, but it's nice hearing someone explain it so well. Great research
Just a note; Instead of adding sugar as a sweetener, try mixing in some dried hibiscus flower, rosehips, or ginger, if you want to offset the bitter, grassy taste. I actually like the taste of mate as-is, but I will still occasionally throw in additives to change things up.
Add Stevia is correct since the Guaranies used to mix some leaves of Stevia in the gourd to kill the bitterness of the Caa-Pora as they called it. Both plants are native of the same area in South America.
You can also sweeten it with a bit of sugar on the yerba between pours (some people sweeten the water), or add things to it for flavor like ground coffee (that’s for pulling an all nighter), orange or lemon peel, or you can experiment with herbs such as fresh thyme.
Just one important correction... 80C is too hot, the water should never be above 75C if you want to avoid cancer risk (and that goes for all hot beverages), I personally drink it at 70C. And also it`s a good idea to put a little bit of cold water before the first hot pouring so you don`t end up burning the yerba. :)
This is a great review and a good instructional for those who want to start drinking mate, very well researched. Mind you, when you start to drink mate the first 'cup' is usually the most bitter and it is not uncommon to spit this first batch if it is to bitter for taste.
It makes me really happy seeing people of other cultures/countries try this! Also, the Yerba you chose is very very powdery so it tends to be more bitter. I personally do not like that brand and prefer a thicker cut.
When I get to Argentina someday I can't wait to try it firsthand. There was only one brand in the supermarket but I think I saw another available on Amazon.
Mate is great, it has many benefits. I'm from the south of Brazil and here we drink a lot of mate. When I was a kid I drank with my grandma every morning. Today I drink every day and I do it in memory of her! I'm making my mate at the moment.
When flipping the cup, shake it repeatedly upside down to get the fine powder to the top, then flip it right way up just far enough to get your incline and place it down gently. Water should be at around 70 degrees celcius, the temperature of the water will have a bigger effect on the flavour than anything else.
this is absolutely fascinating to me. I love learning about different cultures and traditions, wish I had an open minded group of friends to share a cup of this with 😊
I've been drinking a different form of maté we here in Brazil call tereré. It's the same drink, same ritual, but you use cold water and drink from a drinking horn instead of a gourd. We call the horn a Guampa.
Hi Joao. I still have a soft spot for Brazil after making a very good friend in Curitiba a few years ago. But I never heard of Terere or the Guampa. I looked up Guampa on Google and saw they even sell them on Amazon! You have me wanting to try one out with my Yerba Mate!
I live in Campinas, and I found my guampa and the tereré at the local market. You don't necessarily need a guampa to make tereré, you could just use your cuia (gourd)! It's great for warm weather.
Great video, I really like the effort that you put into this and your review style! I have been curious about the process of making Yerba mate at home lately and the this video gave me a great idea of it. New sub!
First put some room temperature water in the mate. After 30 sec/1 min you can add a little 75 C water. Hot water before the first room temperature will kill a lot of nutrients.
RECOMMEND: Do not start with the hot water. First get a cup and put some hot and cold water to just about 40°C (or merely warm) to start with. Pour the warm water on the lower side of the yerba but do it in portions (pour a little, then a little more, and so on. 3 or 4 is fine). Then sip the warm water by the straw but don't swallow it..it won't taste as good. You spit it, and then, with the yerba now wet, you'll pour the 80°C water you heatened in the beginning. You're now set to enjoy.
Cool video!!. You should definitely try your mate with cold water too (with a little bit of mint leaves squished in the water if you fancy... or a pinch of lemon even... that's a Paraguayan way to drink it and it's super refreshing for the summer. !! Actually the scientific Latin name of the yerba mate is Ilex Paraguayensis. The cold version (and the original way to drink it cause the natives drank it naturally from the springs waters years and years ago) its called TERERÉ.... and you can also make a tea beverage strained ... instead of coffee called COCIDO ... that's a Paraguayan beverage too!!!!
Some people compare drinking mate in a round(we would usually make a circle of people drinking mate) with the pipe of peace but instead of peace with friendship. Also when you are waiting for the yerba to soak the water before strart drinking it's better to add a little bit of cold water with the hot water(it prevents from "burning" the mate making it look a little black and change the flavor). Some people add orange peel on the mate to make it sweeter and other stuff too to make it healthier Lastly so cool to see people from other parts of the world sharing my same culture, greets from Uruguay
Hello from Italy. Really enjoyed that upbeat review. I was listening and drinking out of my own blue travel silcone version of a gourd. Being married to a gaucho, I've picked up the habit. : ) All the best!
Mateine is actually a marketing tactic and there's no such compound. Yerba has other components that helps mute the negative effects of its caffeine content.
Great review, I really appreciate reviews like yours, where you took time to make your research to provide us accurate info, I love yerba mate, I drink it everyday and I am so happy with the positive effects in my body and mind, Oh, I love the owl :)
Awesome review. As an argentinian im impresed of the price of yerba and the mate (i know its because of exporation cost, but still). I love drinking mate at college during class with my classmates and while studying (Highly recommended for students) oh, and the best mate in my opinion are with a mate made of wood ;) Greetings from argentina!
They have a tea bag version and even canned Yerba Mate for the less patient. But millions of Argentinians drink this daily- prepared in a very similar way.
Thanks Edgardo. I will make a note to myself to do the phone video. I want to talk about using it with profiles and how the 6gb memory makes profiles work so smoothly.
Now we're living in Guadalajara, Jalisco. And here's a place called "El rincón del mate" where you can find too many kinds of yerba mate, coffe, empanadas and more. Also they sell different types of bombillas and mate. I'll tweet you the card they gave me so you can contact them. greetings from México!
Great review :) I read somewhere that you never may boil water once you have done this once... something with the metals in the water that does something that is not healthy for our bodies when cooked again. ( i don't know if it's true ;) )
this is called chimarrão in Portuguese. .. but only very common in south Brazil. ... countries near Argentina .... but for my taste it's very bitter... rather have a cup of strong coffee
Daniel Topa , Like any other caffeinated beverage, I'd take caution when giving it to kids. A few sips would be just fine, even better if you all drank from the same gourd traditional-style!
I bought a very similar looking silicone gourd but the size holds about 20 grams instead of this big 40 gram. The BYT Mateo Mini is designed for children and solo use as opposed to this big party gourd.
Well they do in the UK, a very popular tea company called Tetleys make it. They call it Tetley Redbush Vanilla. It is very nice with milk and one sugar (my personal taste). Well I looked online and Walmart sells Vanilla Rooibos tea and I noticed Target sell it too, a brand called Celestial Seasonings Rooibos with Madagascar Vanilla as i have not tried that brand I can not say it has the same or similar taste as the tea I drink. I have not seen it in the Whole foods here in the UK though.

According to the traditional directions, it's important to add the yerba mate as he did, shake it, form a little pocket in the gourd like he did, but then you should add cold water and let it sit for a minute or 2, allowing it to settle into the dry herb, before adding the hot water. I am trying to imagine the taste with milk. Interesting! A friend from Argentina took me through the steps to prepare it the way that do in her family. It seems that different areas and different countries have their own techniques.
On another video I saw the instructions for it said u fill up the gourd with water then pass the drink then refill and u should be able to refill like 20 times. But the powder look finer ground
Fun fact: in Argentina, electric kettles come with a mate setting which heats the water up to 80 degrees Celsius
I recommend sticking with the bitterness for some time till you’re ok with it. It is an acquired taste. It’s always a good idea to reduce sugar intake.

Hi Jona. I am going to be doing a video review soon of canned Yerba Mate. They are getting popular in the stores here.
I love Mate and I'm from Saudi Arabia
I had seen a teacher at university drinking it and remembered seeing my great aunt drink it with other family members. Might see if I can find it somewhere
The old world beings sure do love our new world plants…..we shouldve kept it a secret

interesting fact: southern Brazilians have high rates of esophagus cancer for drinking too hot mate all the time.
Yerba mate royal is sweet. Is that a different tea? Thanks
Hi I hope someone can answer this question for me, can kids and teenagers enjoy yerba mate?

I think i will stick to my standard cup of vanilla rooibos, just seems a lot of effort for a drink.
Do they make vanilla rooibos? I have never seen that at the store. I will have to check over at Whole Foods.
Well they do in the UK, a very popular tea company called Tetleys make it. They call it Tetley Redbush Vanilla. It is very nice with milk and one sugar (my personal taste).

We go to Target fairly often- I will check for that Celestial Seasonings version the next time we are there. Thanks for looking it up!
Excellent video; informative and funny. Keep it up!
you should try Matcha tea......
I like Matcha- had it a number of times during my years in Japan. Also another really bitter drink- but I was told I mustn't add sweetener.
nice! i would like to have some mate with you and talk about life! cause thats what mate is for! sharing!
There’s better brands Guayakis for amateurs I recommend playadito or Rosamonte especial
Great video but you say way too much about how to make it properly. It might scare some people.
The easiest and the quickest way is to boil the water, wait a few minutes to cool it down and then pour the water into the thermos. The best way to check if the temperature is right is to put your little finger into the water and if it doesn't hurt too much the temperature is just right. I recommend using thermos with the tap.
There is also a convenient method to put the bombilla correctly. Simply fill in the gourd and put the bombilla in it. There's no need to pour the water first. However, first sip is for the Saint Thomas and the fun fact is that the people in South America spit it out on the street and it isn't an ugly behaviour.
By the way, I love the taste of mate without any sweeteners. Its bitterness has good sides! Bitter products help in digestion and they have some antibacterial properties. You can't say the same about coffee which might cause heartburn, indigestion etc.
Have a nice day :-)
If u boil the water, itloses oxigen and makes mate taste different. I know its a pain to control the temperature but its worth for a better flavour
Don't boil it! 🙏
you may like making terrere also with the yerba!!
Ah! In those traditional stores you can also buy the real mate (gourd).
guys just buy a frensh press, it makes things allot easyer lol

Bugzy Here in Argentina we got a lot of variaty. The "clasical" mate is bitter. For me, is way bitter than tea.
Great review as always, but dang that's a lot work.
Scott Warren Seriously. So complicated. It's like tea with attention issues.
To get the first cup it is- but after that it is just a matter of adding more water.
yeah but the thing with mate is that is a social drink, you share it, so the traditional way is with the straw, "bombilla"
Doubleshot98 different tast. in a teabag its called mate cocido (cooked mate) and besides its a social thing to share
Scott Warren
Apparently, according to 2 sources I read before coming here, it's actually a little more complex than he explained it, because he missed a very important step. According to the traditional directions, it's important to add the yerba mate as he did, shake it, form a little pocket in the gourd like he did, but then you should add cold water and let it sit for a minute or 2, allowing it to settle into the dry herb, before adding the hot water. Try the tereré. It’s a thousand times better than mate. Greetings from Paraguay 🇵🇾
Terere is same with mate?
It's been a craze for over a century...
you dont want the water hotther than 165 it can become carcinogenic if it's any hotter
Someone wrote that they heard there was a cancer risk with that drink- I thought that might have been the reason for using cooler water.
***** its with water being too hot mostly from the smoked variety. Terrere is with cold water and wonderful and refreshing!

mate drinkers live over 90. I know I live in the origin of Yerba Mate. Funny those who do get cancer are not mate drinkers...
La yerba es selecta y él compró esa que nadie conoce en los países del mate.

The rest of the day.
On another video I saw the instructions for it said u fill up the gourd with water then pass the drink then refill and u should be able to refill like 20 times. But the powder look finer ground
Wow- 20 refills? That really would last one person all day.
It’s pronounced (Cher-va mah-tay)
I would try it if someone made it for me lol.
That's funny.
You should NEVER drink mate with a PLASTIC gourd!
