🧉 How to Drink Mate Properly (out of a gourd) Drink Mate Instructions

  • Mate drink instructions:
    You will need only 4 things:
    A gourd which we call mate
    A straw called Bombilla
    The yerba or herbs
    And a flask or thermos
    1. Place the water on the stove.
    2. While we wait for the water to heat. We add the yerba in the gourd. Fill up to 3 quarters of the container.
    3. Turn it upside down and quickly shake it. This is done so that the thick leaves are at the bottom and the thin leaves and dust are at the top. This is important to not get the bombilla clogged. This is called tapado, when the water won't go through the straw.
    4. The yerba has to be left at an angle so that it doesnt't get all wet at the same time as we pour the water. If all the grass is wet, the mate will wash faster, losing its flavor.
    5. The lower side is where the straw will go. Before placing the bombilla in it, many people like to pour a bit of cold or lukewarm water. Simply go to the tap and add a bit of water. This will prevent the yerba from losing its flavor too fast, especially if the first pour is too hot, and it's also done to avoid clogging the straw with the dry dust.
    6. We place the bombilla and we are ready to drink it. The water should be around 78º - 83º which in Fahrenheit is 172º - 181º. If it's boiling hot, wait a bit because you don't want to burn the yerba.
    7. If you're in a group, the first mate is for the one who pours, also known as cebador. Cebar means to feed or to serve. Before you pour more water, it has to be completely dry. So when someone offers you mate, you must drink all the water, slurp it, and then pass it back to the person who gave it to you (the person pouring). Don't pass it around to someone else!

    Hello from Ukraine and thanks for the video! I used to drink mate in the past.. I feel it's time to practice again:) Can you answer some questions about it, please?
    1. Is it better to drink mate before or after meal?
    2. How many rounds can you make with a good quality yerba before losing flavor?
    3. How many people usually can drink it from one mate cup?
    4. Only cebador gives the cup to the next person, right?
    5. Is it considered romantic if you drink it with the person of opposite sex?

      Hi Vlad! Great questions. I'll try to answer to each of them:
      1. It's better to drink mate in between meals. In the morning, it's better to eat something first and then drink mate so it will go down easier.
      2. It depends on your personal perference. The only rule is that when you don't feel the taste of the yerba anymore (if you feel you're drinking just water) it's time for new yerba. I don't usually count the pours but I would estimate about 20 pours or so.
      3. Before covid, as many people as you can fit in your house! But if there are more than 6-7 people it's a very slow process because the round gets too long and you don't get to drink much. At that point it's normal to have a second mate going around.
      4. Yes, it's like a ping pong between the cebador and the rest of the group. It always goes back to the cebador (person with the thermos) so that he/she can fill it again before passing it to the next person to drink.
      5. Not necessarily. At least in Argentina, the mate is usually shared between friends and family. Also between coworkers or casually in university too. It's a gesture of friendship and camaraderie. However, you can share a mate if you're out on a date, for example in the park with someone special.
      Good luck!

    I've spent much of my life as a functional drunk, I'm productive and emotionally stable but I definitely have my vices. I'm a fiery Caribbean woman who loves drinking and cigars. Here in my thirties as a mother of two, I've worked hard to mellow out. Drinking mate the traditional way has not only been delicious but it's satisfied my addictive personality in a lot of ways. Learning about and tasting different types and how the flavors develop between cups is just as satisfying as smoking cigars. Having something else that I can sip throughout the day that's not as detrimental as beers has been really good for me. The ritual of making it and how it can be a social affair all works for me. Just wanted to put that out there for people. If you need a healthier habit, mate can be a fun and delicious thing to get into. I ordered a beautiful carved gourd from an Argentine craftsman on Etsy and that makes it feel all the more special. Thank you for sharing your culture with me ❤

    I am from Syria, mate is so popular there, but every person drinks from his own cup, I think Syria is the only place outside of South America where mate is considered a public drink, I think that is due to so many immigrants came back from South America somewhere around the 70s of past century.

    For those who is wondering, what is that, it's yerba mate. Is a traditional South American caffeine-rich hot drink or cold made with dried and chopped yerba mate leaves. It is bitter in flavour and is particularly popular in countries such as Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Argentina Brazil are the largest producers in the world. It's can be consumed hot or cold. In the US you can find it in cans or bottles, also in south america, but drinking using the accessories is part of the tradition in Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay, it's kind of a ritual, the drink is usually , but not necessarily, shared in a social setting among friends, with individuals drinking from the same receptacle. Given that it is a traditional South American drink it will come as no surprise to learn that stars from countries such as Brazil, Argentina , Uruguay and Paraguay regularly drink mate.

    Hey how many times can you brew the mate leaves before it becomes "Lavado" or losses flavor?

    • @FranciscoHuanaco
      @FranciscoHuanaco  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Personally, if I'm drinking by myself, I usually don't change it until the next day or the next "sitting". If you're sharing with friends then I would say at around half a liter of water, maybe up to 20 brews.
      But it depends on the quality of the yerba, the temperature of the water, and your personal taste preference.
      Some people also add other herbs on top of the loose leaves or you can buy a flavored yerba so that the taste lasts longer.
      Cheers!

    Which brand is the best to use if you are just starting to drink mate?

    • @FranciscoHuanaco
      @FranciscoHuanaco  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on what you are looking for. Some are stronger, others are milder, some have stems others don't. I prefer the big South American brands: Cruz de Malta, Rosamonte, Taragüí, Canarias, etc.
      Cruz de Malta is usually the most affordable, so you can start out with that. If you live in the US, you can find some of those brands on Amazon.
      Playadito and Amanda are also very good, but it all depends on your personal taste.
      Enjoy!

      It's difficult to explain in a comment but this blog has an article on switching the bombilla using the "montañita" method: matekaa.com.mx/como-hacer-la-montanita-en-el-mate/ (It's in Spanish so use Google translate if needed).
      You can also gradually start pouring the water from the top of the montañita, without moving the bombilla, until all the yerba is used and it's all lavado. At that point, you throw out the yerba and start a new one.

    • @FranciscoHuanaco
      @FranciscoHuanaco  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There are a few reasons why that happens:
      1. Check your bombilla (straw). It may not be the right one for mate.
      2. Soak the bottom of the yerba in water and let it expand by absorbing said water before inserting the bombilla.
      3. Shake vigorously upside-down after putting in the dry yerba to remove the dust and smallest particles.
      4. Cover the hole (mouth) of the straw with your thumb while placing it in the cup.
      It's normal to have some fine powder pass through the bombilla on the first couple of rounds. If you tried all these points and are still uncomfortable, try a different brand of yerba.
      Enjoy!
