Installing dash cams is usually a real pain that requires running many feet of USB cable around your side curtain airbags which can be nerve racking. This adapter made by Dongar Technologies will make installing your dash cam so much easier. This should work with many other Hyundai/Kia vehicles as well. Requires the Homelink mirror.

Nice so you did it without taking off the full cover around the mirror. That’s how I hope to do it. Now all I need is an Ioniq 5. It was supposed to come in at the beginning of this month but it keeps getting delayed but now I’m thinking I should wait for the 2023 for the preconditioning but I’m torn I so want this vehicle.

Your 12v battery will die
Great video and product, just ordered. Quick ? as been searching for MirrorTap options for powering a radar detector. Seems like there isnt one yet and only option is to run 10ft of RJ45 from a fusetap to the windshield. BTW, for your orig setup did you make a video as to where you tapped power down below? Keep up the great videos!

Thanks for this Ioniq Guy. I've just installed a Nextbase 522GW in my Premium RWD Ioniq 5 here in the UK. For anyone else wanting this method of hardwiring a dashcam in the UK the best bet is a direct order or the lead from Dongar in California. The lead costs $30 and the shipping, in my case $17 so overall came to £42. This compares very favourably with the installation cost using the hard wire kit from Nextbase which terminates in the footwell fusebox. The best quote for that method I got was £110. Interestingly very few people in the UK, including Halfords will fit a hardwire kit to an electric car!
Does the dashcam work fine? I have order this adapter for my Kia and have read about people talking about 12v dashcams not working. I have the exact same cam as you.

Regarding your comment about the potential for the cables to rattle, you can find some soft, open cell foam, just a very thin layer would do, and wrap and tape those connectors such that the exterior of them is that layer of foam.

I really don't want to buy a dash cam. But you are right. Drivers in the parking garage at work are not cautious. The drive down the spiral cutting blind corners and in my lane as I venture up in the opposite direction. It always bothered me. But now with a brand new ULTRA expensive car and $1k deductible, that $150ish for a dash cam is getting easier to buy.

Have you installed a rear cam? If so, did you do a tutorial on running the cable for that? I just bought a FITCAMX front and rear camera combo. Instructions for front cam are ok; none for rear.
Finally someone with an efficiency lower than mine. My wife has been on my case for averaging about 3.0 whenever I drive the Ioniq5. Sorry I don’t want to drive like a Prius owner.

I tried to get the Dongar adapter but to no avail. I did not want to wait any longer. (Been Months). I purchased an adapter from Bobs mirrors and soldered a USB adapter on it. Cost a little more but love the results.

On your 10 things to do, I found the wipers absolutely fine, and I live in India. We get only one trim, which is the top end long range rear wheel drive version manufactured in Indonesia. Probably a region to region sourcing of parts is the difference.

It doesn't work because there is no connector behind that rear view mirror to plug it into. That is only on cars with the Homelink mirror
Will it also work on the Kona EV?
A note to SE owners. It may just be me, but check before you buy to see if you have the connector shown in the compartment. Mine does not. Had to return my adapter.

How do I find out the TRIM version of my car? I have ordered an IONIC in Australia, due in a couple of months and its listed on the contract as a NE.V3 IONIQ 5 DYNAMIQ 2WD. Cant find anything that says SE or SEL etc. Thanks!

Garmin is great. I use DashCam 45. Recordings include GPS provided date, time, speed, and coordinates. Someone drove head on into me last week and killed my Subaru last week, and the dash cam footage proved 100% of the fault was the other person...
Now the wait begins for the Ioniq, which I have joined a waitlist for. The technique shown in this video might work with Garmin, but Garmin can get a bit picky about the USB cable used... so no way to know until I try.

EV6 isn’t listed as compatible, but neither is the Ioniq 5. I’d think it’s a pretty safe bet it’ll work if the car has Homelink.
@@JohnCap523 what has Homelink to do with this?? Many models in Europe don't have this garage remote and BTW I don't remember seeing it included on the EV6 I ordered (!)

You must have the "Ultimate" trim for NA variants.
Hot in acc only. For a dash cam to work when turned off, it requires a hot at all times (direct to batt circuit), thus need to pull wires over to A-pillar, behind air bag, down to fuse panel. Also, might want to get some very think foam to wrap all that plastic to keep rattles down. And if installing a rear camera, most likely you still have to run a wire up and inside the front lip of the headliner than through the side of the headliner to the rear.
(If camera has a battery, hat at all times connection not required, however if living in hot climate and vehicle out in the sun a lot, those lithium batteries will get too hot and (hopefully) melt. If not melting, burning.
Not true you can have power bank in car and when car parked somewhere you can power it from powerbank. And when you drive powerbank can be charger with car

In your "I repeat..." you only comment on the Ioniq SE trim but, in the opening line, you mention '24 Ioniq 5 Limited (doesn't work) but HomeLink mirror required.
Taking the 1st step (remove center cover -- but I've not purchased any parts; just looking), it *seems* like this might work. But I would like to get clarification as to whether this is expected to not-work on our '24 Ioniq 5 Limited w/Homelink (digital) mirror. (And, if it's a not-work, if there is a simple workaround.)

Thanks. How do I find out what trim I have? In India the Ioniq is sold as only one trim. Mine will have an auto dimming rear view mirror, so this should work right? Or rather, the website says that it has an 'electro chromic mirror' which I presume is an auto dimming one?

Yes, this will work on SEL trim. I've been meaning to look into new cameras. No recommendations at this point in time.

I've never used another camera but I'm sure Amazon reviews can lead you to a good one. As far as I'm aware, Dongar is the only company making such an adapter unfortunately. Kinda surprised nobody else has since it's relatively simple.

Why not get powerbank and long usb cable to recharge it when you drive .

Yes, the Vava that I use has a small lithium ion battery that allows it to record if it senses movement

That's cool. It's kinda lame that even in the Limited Trim with Cameras all around the car, you don't get a "dash cam" recording, but this is a good clever option!

It is annoying that this car not only has cameras but can synthesize a 3D image, yet none of it can be recorded. For the price it would be competitive to include it. Tesla wins the security factor.

Did you loose the GPS feature of your Dashcam? I have a VAVA (purchased in 2021) and it comes with a long cable with an in-line GPS. I'd prefer not to lose the GPS. Did you use an aftermarket cable? Thanks!
Oh wow, I didn't even notice the fact that I didn't have GPS anymore. I barely ever review footage from the camera.

No, you would need to wire it to the fuse panel or get a camera with a battery

Is a shorter USB - C cable included in the box, or is that a separate purchase?
If I recall correctly it came with a short mini USB and micro USB cable as those are the most common for dash cams, or at least they were.

You have the SEL or limited then so you should have the correct mirror for this

I've been using my dashcam for 4 years now and have had no issues with battery draining. I always hook it up to a circuit that shuts off when the power shuts off and then the camera has a battery that allows it to record if it senses the car gets hit in a parking lot
Canadian here, do you need the Homelink mirror option? for us it's available only if you choose the Ultimate package +5000CAD and that package is only available on the top trim..$$$$

No it powers off so you'll need a camera with a battery backup

The company says to use a camera that runs on 5V for optimal performance. No 12V. I use a Vava 1080p but would like to upgrade to a 4k model at some point

I've only owned my Ioniq 5 for a few months. I'm surprised that anyone expects to have to install a dashcam. The Ioniq5 already has a number of camera built in for collision avoidance, turning, and backing up. Isn't there any way to save the existing video images that the car is using and generating. It seems so simple on a Tesla. I'm surprised that a way to save video is not available and I was wondering if it will be in a future software update.
It needs extra hardware to do so. Korean models have it.
@@TheIoniqGuy I really like my Ioniq 5 but I find it frustrating. I would be pleased if we could just buy the extra hardware and add it to the car, rather than install another dashcam. But that's probably not available for the 2022 model. I expect they will probably add this to a future North American version but it won't help me. I usually keep my car for the long term.

it is kind of a problem that it turns off though when the car ist turned off. you won t be able to record what happens when the car is parked. i know there is a battery in your Dashcam but that doesn t last long.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong here... I followed these exact steps but my USB doesn't get any power from the home link slot .. I tried with two different adapters... The mirror is powered on but my Im not getting any power in my USB ... I have SEL btw
That's very strange. Were you testing the USB with your dashcam? Some dashcams don't use 5V like this adapter puts out so it might not be enough power for it.

My dashcam has a battery that will kick in during parking mode. That being said the battery of them won’t last that long by itself.
Installed!!! Thanks! I chose to sorten the USB cable that came with the VAVA. It is a really clean install. This is my first dash cam. It's a good one too. pretty much setit and forget it.
I forgot, did you do a video about the wireless Motorola Android Auto? That is soooo nice. It connects really fast and just starts playing music from my phone. Sometimes it drops out but it's really not a big deal.
I haven't yet. I've noticed maybe one dropout once a week or so. Not the end of the world as it usually reconnects within a minute

My Ioniq 5 has the removeable plastic cover behind the mirror, but it is not the Homelink mirror. Will it still work?
Do you have the SE trim level?
@@TheIoniqGuy In Switzerland it's called First Edition. It's loaded with all options, except the sunroof. Tomorrow in the daylight I can check if the wires are there as in the video.
You should check. This car had too many differences between markets to know what one in another country has. I can only speak to the US market.

Nice! It's strange to me that all dash cams at this point just don't have a small battery for that purpose. Mines is like 4 years old and has a battery
@@TheIoniqGuy most dashcams have capacitors and not batteries so they can survive in the heat. The heat ends up eating batteries and the battery acid that spills kills the dashcam
Maybe so for some brands. Mine has a 320mAh battery according to the documentation
