George Chuvalo - Is a retired Canadian professional boxer who was a five-time Canadian heavyweight champion, and two-time world heavyweight title challenger. Chuvalo, who is considered by many to have one of, if not the best chin in boxing history, was never knocked down in his amateur career, in his professional career, or in sparring, and was ranked #4 on ESPN's greatest chin in boxing history list. Chuvalo; a big, rugged, bull necked fighter, was known for his physicality, pummeling style, punching power and his brutal body attack. The late Nat Fleischer described him in a 1965 article - "…Chuvalo is a crude, strong, powerful, flat-footed pugilist who knows only one way to fight - the old bare-knuckle style in which roughness and body pummeling were featured. Scientific boxing is not part of Chuvalo's equipment……". Rocky Marciano was quoted saying that Chuvalo was a hundred years too late. He fought in the golden era of heavyweight boxing during the 1960s and 70s. Chuvalo lost to heavyweights such as Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and George Foreman, but was credited for his spirited performances. He did defeat top contenders such as Yvon Durelle, Doug Jones, Jerry Quarry and Cleveland Williams. He fought for the world title twice, losing a controversial decision to Ernie Terrell and another decision in his first fight with Ali.

George is a friend of mine. Haven't seen him in a couple of years, though. He was doing his suicide prevention tour at the high schools. God bless him.
He has been through trauma and sorrow unlike anything the majority of people could even conceptualize. I think that's kind of why we hit it off. I have a strong idea that he and I have lived through much the same kind of life. Met him at Toronto's Sick Kids hospital back in early 2000's. He and I both happened to be visiting the children's cancer ward. I was in Toronto for treatment of my own and would go to the Kid's Hospital to try and lift their spirits, and mine too. One day when I went there, George was there to visit the kid's and teenagers to inspire them. He once looked me in the eye after I asked him if he ever blamed God for what happened in his life, and he said, "No Mike, I do NOT blame God for the pain in my life." I cry when I think of the time he did that.
He is so gentle and kind to everybody. If it wasn't for the scarring on his face, you'd never have known he ever once lifted his hands against anyone for any reason. Love ya, my friend.

The thing is, in the 2020s, heavyweights these days are huge. Fury, Joshua and Wilder are all 6'6". It is rare for a top fighter to weigh less than 230lbs. George Chuvalo was 6'1" and 215lbs. Some of them these days are agile and skilful too, especially Fury. I followed boxing avidly in the mid to late 60s and it is natural to favour the fighters from your own era. Chuvalo was rock hard but was frequently outpointed by other men: Cleroux, McMurtry, Rademacher, Folley, Patterson, Terrell, Corletti, Ali, Bonavena, Mathis; stopped by Frazier and Foreman. The only two top-tenners he beat were Doug Jones and Jerry Quarry (the latter by a fluke punch when Quarry misjudged the count). Today, I think Chuvalo would find them just too big. But full respect to the man, he was a true warrior.

I can't see it. These big heavy weights today can't put out the work pace of people like chuvalo and fraizer. Would be like Usyk AJ . Their just big, that's all. AJ for one crumbles in front of a pressure fighter. Chuvalo would hospitalise him. Fraizer would probably kill him

A lot of the fighters he fought are in the hall of fame. Ali (twice), Frazier, Foreman, and Patterson. He also faced all the contenders of the era. He couldn't box too good but he had great heart and a cast iron chin.

People measure fighters in different ways. If toughness, stamina, and durability are the criteria, George is the greatest of all time. 65 knockouts of 79 wins. If you face him, odds are highly that you lose. Bigger odds he knocks you the hell out. He just so happened to have a legendary chin, so that overshadows his boxing ability, unfortunately. However, if you ever have any question as to how good he really was, ask the 65 guys he knocked the hell out.

Almost unbelievable. I was glad the fight with Foreman was stopped when it was. He had gotten to not being able to defend himself very well, but would not go down, with George wailing on him pretty hard.
