The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a game I played extensively. The story grasped me as a child because it was all about a young boy taking on something he wasn't ready to take on. After the story was over, it split apart the Zelda timeline and took a multitude of paths... But what about the story before the game? What things took place to set the stage in Ocarina of Time that we never knew all the details about? Like the story of Link's parents? Well, that's what we'll be covering today!

Besides the placement in the comic not really making sense (not that we should expect it too), it would make sense why Link's house is so different from everybody else's. Everybody else's house is carved and decorated to resemble, well, a house. Link's house looks much more like the tree it originally was. As for it growing so quickly in the first ten years of Link's life, the Mom also just spontaneously turned into a sapling that was also quite tall already. Could be she just grew very quickly.

Innnnnnn West Hyrule, Castle Town, born, not raised. With my parents is where I spent my first few days. Chillin' out, maxin' relaxin' all cool and shooting some hookshot at pots like a fool. When a couple of races who were usually cool started causing trouble around Hyrule. They started one little war and my mum wouldn't settle and said "I'm taking you to the woods just like Hansel and Gretel."
She whistled for a horse and when we got near, a weird owl appeared and filled us with fear. He told her I was special which made her quite teary, but I said "mum, forget it! Onward to Kokiri!"
I grew up in the woods till around 7 or 8 and the Great Deku said "Yo Link, smell ya later!" I reentered my kingdom even though it's quite scary. Help Zelda retake the throne as the kid with no fairy.

I'd rather imagine Link's mom was the tree house Link lives in... I don't think the comic artists were looking at the direct location of each house in the game when they were drawing.

As link was a baby, maybe they didnt tell him the truth about his mother. The tree was just a tree to link.
Eh? I thought the rule of Kokiri Forest was that ADULTS couldn't enter the forest, or else they'd turn into monsters. There's an NPC with a mohawk who we're told had this happen to him while we were gone. It's an interesting comic, but I think the reason it was limited to just one country, which wasn't even Japan, was because it wasn't canon. Also, if the Kokiri had seen Link's mother, they would have known that Link was not one of them. Yet the game indicates that they are unaware of Link's origins, and think he's just some loser Kokiri who hasn't got a fairy yet. It makes more sense that Link's mother was gravely injured, as the Deku Tree said, and that only the Deku Tree knew about her.
I think that might pertain to the lost woods
the problem i had with this, even before i heard about this comic, is how the hell did the deku tree transport a baby to kokiri forest? i imagine that's why they did this comic, they couldn't have link's mother dying somewhere, she had to be the one to carry him to the forest since the deku tree doesn't have any limbs, and the kokiri clearly don't know that link is a human. it doesn't make any sense without the comic, and yet the comic can't possibly be canon. so i'm forced to make the same conclusion i make about all zelda lore, that they just didn't really think it through and there is no real underlying story. what little story there is was put in the games for the sake of making good gameplay, and by extension, they certainly never made any compromises for the sake of lore consistency. it just wasn't the priority, and i imagine they never anticipated that people would put so much thought into every little detail, or try to connect all the separate games into timelines and so on. and i understand why people want to do that, i'm the same way, i want to believe there's a cohesive story that underlines all the games, but i just have to accept that the backstory of the zelda universe was taken no more seriously than the backstory of the mario universe

The German Club Nintendo magazine was infamous for their very open interpretations of Nintendo products back then. This was probably just one of many jokes the editors did. It was a fun time in the 90s, no one took canons in video games that serious ^^

Hum, literally the first thing that happens is to be bullied by the skull kid. Besides that, the forest didn't transform him into a Deku, Skull Kid did.

And OOT Link actually did turn into a Stalfos, he's the skeleton that teaches Twilight Princess Link his skills

It's an emulator bug. Also, it was Rauru who pierced Link's ears, not Sheik.
hmm...maybe it was in the manga (or some other Non-Canon source) but i distinctly remember Sheik mentioning Pierced Ears being a Sheikah 'Rite of Passage'...either way, i think itd be a funny mod for emulation, giving Link some kind of Caveman hair style (not getting it trimmed for 7 years should make it look wild xD)

The Kokiri just smuggly looking on as Link's mother "dies" actually makes a bit of sense when you think about it. The Kokiri are supposedly immortal (so long as they remain within the forest), and they rarely have contact with outsiders, so the concept of death is probably lost on them. Hell, from their point of view, she didn't even die (and technically speaking, she didn't since trees are living things). She merely joined them as being part of the forest. Oh, and as for the bit about her insides being carved out, I don't think she'd really mind. Ultimately, she was prepared for whatever fate may have awaited her, and she did accomplish her goal of getting her child to safety. Plus, as a tree, she still kinda gets to be alive, while contributing to the community that's caring for her child (though this might've had a somewhat more uplifting ending had she become Link's eventual treehouse rather than Mido's... rather than her own son, she's instead sheltering someone who's a bit of a prick towards him, albeit not necessarily a bad person).

@@jujoya I think it depends on whatever's carved out. As long as they're not fucking around with the root system, she might turn out okay (plus, the Kokiri houses do have green leaves still growing on the top of them).

In the game it was said that adults who got lost in the woods became Stalfos, and kids who got lost became Skullkids. The writer of this manga must have missed some details. Also, I thought that Link's mom was injured in the war on her way to the forest and died from her wounds.
That's in the lost woods though, not Kokiri's forest.
I was always confused how Link got to Kokiri Forest and why he seemingly had no family.
I kinda assumed both his parents were just dead or maybe they left Link in the care of the Kokiri cuz they were bad parents.

I like the idea of Link's mom becoming his house... she was devoted until the very end to make sure her son was safe, to protect him, and a house is a place that provides shelter and protection... maybe she didn't get to raise her son herself, but I like the idea of her spirit guarding over him through the tree.
Maybe, just maybe, this german-only comic book isn't canon? Aside from how the game contradicts it with saying his mom was injured, one of the Kokiri also says that everyone who enters the forest turns into a Stalfos. Not a tree. I call shenanigans on this whole thing.

That's the Lost Woods, and it only happens if you get lost and stay too long. Kokiri Forest may be a separate thing.
What doesn't make a lot of sense is that the Great Deku Tree seems like it must be in Kokiri Forest, too.

There are several species of bird known to mimic speach, including crows, talking birds are nothing new.

I totally see him having his tree moved and considering it's magic they would have probably let his mother protect him. It only fits the narrative of a protective family member sacrificing for their child.

This comic was supposedly only published in germany, yet the titles for both parts of the prequel story are in Dutch ("Hyrule onder Vuur" & "De Vlucht naar Kokiri")?
Is this because of a convoluted double translation where whoever owned the comic originally had a Dutch version of an originally German comic, or are Americans confusing the two languages again?

If you take the timeline were we see link as a ghost in twilight princess,then you can see just how tragic it is for Link's parents and also for Link himself to die early and never living a full life, especially for Link and his father as well that died unexpectedly.Link's family story is very heartbreaking
