I found some 30 yr old MRE matches in a 30 yr old box of Esbit tabs and they both worked.

Always fun. I remember these too. Doesn't do anything that a Bic and cotton wool wouldn't. Just buy some mini Bics, some cotton wool, some vaseline, and a box to put them in; cheaper and better.

Yep. I also keep empty bics to put in tins with char cloth as give aways to get people interested in learning some survival skills.

When I was in the military my second job was an ALSE tech (aviation life support equipment) my job was to inspect and service the survival vests and gear for the pilots. We had these in the kits. I was able to acquire a one for my self. I have had it since 1992 still works to this day. I’ve about half of one tinder quick showing people how it works. I do not think they are infused with anything. Mine was never sticky or smelled of any chemicals. I just wish i would have taken a better interest in survival back then. I could have really outfitted myself with some cool army gear. Lol

Bought mine in early 90s. Striker still works. SOL sells replacement cotton pieces

I had 'The Metal Match' back in the early 70's in Canada. Not a magnesium thing, a piece of flint on the side of a box, that you sparked using a metal 'match stick' striker onto a saturated cotton, similar to the one you have there. The bonus is that the box in which the metal match screws into allows you to put in lighter fluid, which soaks a wick in the metal match, which is ignited by striking the side of the box flint.

That kit being from the late 80s or early 90s still works is pretty dang cool. I bet the accelerant used on that tinder would be "taboo" to use nowadays, haha.

Bought 3 of them over 10 years ago from ebay including the more expensive and rarer metal green aluminium version that has extra flint and Allen wrench/key to replace the flint that is held in place by the grub screw and spring.
Then I found the Adventure Medical Kits Survive Outdoors Longer (SOL) version that has a thicker handle as it was included with the old discontinued Adventure Medical Kits Pocket survival Kit.
That kit was great, really don't know why they stopped making it, especially the more expensive Doug Ritter version that had extras including a mini fixed blade knife you could use as a neck knife made by CRKT.

I'm not surprised that it lit, I'm surprised that the fuel/accelerant didn't eat through the plastic in that kit.

The striker from that kit reminds me of a used up bic lighter. Normally after the fuel runs out, you are still able to strike sparks for a long time afterwards.

Just looked it up on google, they are still made evidently and can be found on Amazon for like $12. Just a little information for anyone who would like to purchase one for their own survival gear. I didn’t think I’d be able to find one to be honest.

Not a bad idea to change out the plugs , from time to time . Definately get rid of that junky striker . I have two of these , great size , good idea , but the striker has to go . Picked up a solid brass one , the same sizs on Amazon . Works a lot better .

They have similar kits nowadays. I think it's lifesystems. I'll check and get back to you.
A pack of those tabs and a one handed striker. I've still got the striker. It gives much better sparks than a dead lighter. Really effective.
Just checked. Sol do a kit, slightly different from what I had, though the same striker.
