and as always....
Stay in the Woods,
Dan
I bought one, years ago, just before Springfield stopped making them.
That trigger guard is removable and allows the gun to fold a bit better.
There was a rail available and that allows one to mount an optic.
There are plenty of mods you can do to add ammo storage and comfort.
As simple as it is, I love shooting this rifle.
If I remember correctly, I did have to file down my front sight for my 50 yard zero.
7:00 shoot from farther away.... The sights make you raise your rifle for distance and so the bullet is set for a higher arc than target. You have to wait for it to begin dropping. Find out what distance they calibrated the iron sights for. For close shooting you just have to get good at aiming a bit low
Looks like sights are set for 100yds maybe
@@DieLuftwaffel if I remember correctly they were sighted for 75 yards in the 22 lr I changed ammo around to get mine to hit at 50 yards but the ammo I use is wayyyy to expensive now
If you are still interested in this gun go for the chiappa arms branded one. It comes with twin triggers no paddle thing, and a fiber optic front sight with an ADJUSTABLE rear sight. They also come in different caliber combinations including a 22lr/12ga with choke tube compatibility.
i have seen these, thanks
I have a Chiappa double badger. Nice wood stock dual triggers. 22lr .410. Only complaint is the trigger guard is how you break open the action and it is a little floppy but not a bad little gun
The Chiappa has foam crap in the stock and retails for $900. Pass
@jimrodriguez8047 apparently you didnt notice the model shown in the video. The entire stock is foam with a thin outer shell of sheetmetal. The cartridge holders are molded into the foam center. The only difference between the video model and the chiappa model is the video model has a little cover that flips down over the shells.
@@jimrodriguez8047TPS Arms makes the best of these. The 357 magnum over 410 model also has an elevation adjustable front site, plus the shell holder is better laid out, the take down pin is captive so it isn't easily lost, and the 410 barrel is threaded for removable chokes. The Chiappa ones are available in more different shotgun chamberings, but the quality is not great.
If you want one you dont have to track down a springfield or CZ model, TPS arms makes reproductions of these with some slight improvements like screw in chokes, a captured takedown pin, and a crossbolt safety. They alsk come in more caliber combos than the originals did:
.22LR / .410 GA
.22WMR / .410 GA
.17HMR / .410 GA
.22HORNET / .410 GA
.357 MAGNUM / .410 GA
.410 GA 3" / .410 GA
Ignore the guy saying to get a chiappa mine was a hunk of junk
I have the TPS Arms version of this in 38/357-410 with a short lane 410-22lr adapter. It has an elevation adjustable front sight, and is threaded for choke tubes.. (I just use a full choke mostly) it’s small game accurate enough within 40 yds, and with the 357 it is plenty accurate for deer sized game and self defense up to 100 yds. It obviously has it’s limitations, but as an avid outdoorsman this is one gun that I can honestly say that I would never sell, and would feel comfortable if I had to depend on it for most “survival “ ( not SHTF) situations. Also I feel that this caliber combo is the most practical of all of them… just my $.02
I have this same combo, with a 9mm adapter in addition to the .22lr. Highly recommend it!
Exact same combo and I find it to be my most used truck/UTV/boat/all-around gun. It's just too handy having so many options in the same package.
I've always liked them because of the dual chamber but I have an AR-7. Love that little thing!!
@@backwoodsbrown I have both and a Savage 42 in 22 mag/410 and it is hard to decide which one to carry that day lol
I have owned several M6s, both Springfield and CZ manufacturered. I now have the TPS Arms M6. I think it is the better gun. 410 barrel is threaded for screw in chokes, has a manual block safety as well as the hammer safety, plus the takedown pin is captured, like an AR. I have the 357/410.
If you don’t know your weapon then you know nothing. The M6 is a great survival tool. Nicely done video, thanks.
Excellent video and review! This is probably the best review of this rifle (or type of rifle) that I've seen; it's focused, simple, direct, and isn't padded to make a 10 minute video run to over 20 minutes. Well done!
If I gotta put food on the table, 10/22 is a superior survival rifle.
While heavier you could also look for a Savage Stevens model 24, calibers ran from .22 LR/410 up to the hard to find .308/12 ga. Savage also still makes the Model 42 which is a .22/410 and Chiappa makes the double badger in calibers up to .243 over 410 or .22/20 ga
I've owned an M6 for many years in the original 22 hornet/410 nickel plated. It's more of a collector piece than practical "survival rifle." I'll stick with my 12 ga dbl barrel (coach gun) with an 8", 38 special insert in the left barrel.
Double 12ga is WAY too heavy.
@@AldoSchmedack The M6 weighs 2.7kg...without inserts. A CZ BOBWHITE G2 weighs 2.9kg. Its not that big of a difference.
If it has a 22lr barrel on it, given that it is a single shot, you should be able to use 22 long and 22 short ammunition, as well.
I’ve owned an Armalite AR-7 for many years. It, too, was designed as an Air Force survival rifle. It’s a semi-auto .22LR with an 8 round magazine. Originally designed and manufactured by Armalite, today it’s made by Henry Arms, and is prettied up a little. My old Armalite, despite the take-down barrel, is remarkably accurate! 😊❤
4:00 It's not only for mittens but if you have a broken arm from crashing your bomber too. Originals had no trigger guard.
Bought one about 30 years ago. Sold it to a DNR guy. Wish I still had it like all of my other guns I sold through the years. Was extremely accurate. Very little recoil on the 410.
Definitely an oldie ,but a goodie!!!
Where im at 410 shell are hard to find. I like my Henry ar7, my go to survival rifle 👊
I have the 22 hornet/410 M6 and it is soooo much fun and nice for backpacking. You can still find the cases and there are a lot of people still making the rail.
These are neat little guns. I purchased several of them back in the 90's. Two in .22LR (1 stainless and 1 in phosphate finish). The other in .22 Hornet phosphate finish. Reasonably accurate and never any malfunctions. Very well made.
I had an M6 22LR/410 in the 1980s. I carried it folded in my backpack or Horse saddlebag and slept with it in Grizzly country. Mine did not have the trigger guard so it folded better. Of course there are better options for bear defense or hunting but this is an ideal, light, and easily packed selection.
Thanks Dan. I am traveling the US full time in my camper van and, besides my 9mm pistol, I am getting a mossberg maverick cruiser 12 ga shot gun. 18" barrel and pistol grip so it is short and fits in my van easily. It holds 8 shots and, slugs will protect me in bear country where my 9mm will not. I thought a long time about this but, keep coming back to this gun. I can hunt with it, store it easily, it is only about $200, and it is great for self defense and bear defense. Always enjoy your videos and learn a lot. Just used your tarp tip about looping around the pole 2 days ago. It really locks the tarp to the pole tip. I also have my Coalcracker hat I used last winter in -6 to keep warm. Keep up your excellent work.
Dear Overland Spend the Money and Buy a Pachmar Brand." Vindicator pistol grip and Fore end for your Mossberg 500. rubber molded Reduce felt Recoil 75%.undera $100.00 Your Welcome.
Cool part of a collection
File the rear notch deeper and that will bring your pont of impact lower.
Except it's the aperture sight that is meant to be used for the rifled barrel.
Being a single shot, I think that you'll find that all the .22 rimfire cartridges will fire from the gun. They come in short, long, CB cap, and now days they have super low velocity rounds that sound like a pellet gun. One of those alternative rounds may shoot closer to your point of aim than the Long Rifle version (which also comes in standard, high and hyper velocity versions). Almost all of them will take a squirrel or rabbit. Head shots will take even larger game. I have a 1960s era Armalite AR-7 and the modern Henry Survival version of same. I love them both, but being semi auto, they only shoot Long Rifle 22s. On the plus side, they have adjustable sights.
Nice video 👍🏻👍🏻 cool little gun. But me personally prefer the short lane 12ga. To .22lr adapter but that's just my preference and only 150 dollars
Thanks. I prefer the Rossi takedown set. Mine is a single shot and I selected three barrels. .22 LR, .243 WIn, and a 20 gauge. Be Well and Good Journey, Richie
If I remember the .22lr was zeroed for 75 yards for Air Force Survival purposes.
great weapon. my brother owned one when they first came out. it was stolen by someone who attended a party at his house and figured out where it was locked up. he still misses it. they are hard to find an original version. great video.
Locked up but stolen anyway? That sucks. I think even my wife doesn't know the combinations to the safes 🤣🤣🤣.
@@asmith7876 the safe was a small one and not secured to the wall. the gun was taken apart to save space. they grabbed it and walked off with it.
That’s pretty cool. Thanks for sharing!
Good review, thanks. I thought these were cool until I discovered the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 in 9mm, G19 mag, 15 rds. Folds and stores in a small backpack.
Not even for survival, I'd just take it in my backpack or a canoe for the heck of it.
It has its place as a survival rifle. If I had my chance I'd own an old Taurus Trifecta. That thing had so many barrels at one point. 22, 410, 20 gauge, .223, .243, 44 magnum and 44 special, 357 magnum and 38 special, and I'm sure there were other calibers. But it is no longer offered new.
I've got the Henry US Survival AR-7. There both great firearms. Cool video!!!!
TPS arms makes an incredible M6 scout. Several rifle calibers available, and made in USA
The CZ made M6 is accurate and well made. The best .410 ammo I ever used was Winchester AA 2 1/2" target ammo, with size 8 or 9 shot. Worked fantastic on upland birds. 3" #6 steel leaves almost all recipients unimpressed. ITX-10 #6 shot will probably replace steel sixes for most hunting I do with it. TPS wads from Ballistic Products are good for non toxic shot in the 3" .410 (and 28 gauge) reloads.
.22 Hornet shooters will profit from taking up reloading in this caliber. The 45 grain Barnes TSX-FB is very accurate, and there is finally now published Lil'Gun data. The 30 grain Barnes Varmint Grenade shoots well, too in this weapon.
I have one of the earlier models i picked up for 150 bucks. I had same issues with the 22 barrel shooting too high. I put a small piece of rail and a very small red dot on it. Cant fold it as small but i just pop out that pivot pin and store it that way. I made a small pouch fof each half. Works good.
Honest assessment. I might use it for a game getter if accurate. However, I prefer a firearm that overlaps, and could be better at security. Security can be one aspect of survival. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
If you can get one and have to carry 2 different rounds. If you only have one, just easily and cheaply pick up the Henry Survival .22. The next best alternative if you want 1 round for options, a folding 9mm carbine and pistol. Obviously the weight of ammo is a concern, but shotgun shells aren't super light either if you're looking at the M6.
Every Henry I had sucked. Been through 3 of them and had 2 friends own them. They are not that accurate and they tend to jam a bit often. So they just are not my choice to carry for any reason.
@@vikingskuld I don't own one, but I've heard the opposite from the only 2 people I personally know who have them. Still wouldn't be my first choice anyway, I'd take the extra weight.
@@Swearengen1980 yeah years ago when younger and dumber I bought a couple after a friend got one. So then it's like everyone I know thought hey great idea. Trouble is the patterns were so wide I would had to have been close enough to a squirrel to kill it with a sling shot. Well consistently anyway. Once in a while you get a lucky shot that would hit what you aimed at. I mean don't get me wrong they are ok but I have seen good and cheap air riffles with better accuracy. Then you chuck in the once in a while reliability issue they just were not for me. I am sure the gods of production are in a good mood and the moon and stars line up and some really good ones get made once in a while. Lol I have heard some talk real highly of them once in a while. The normal thing is not real accurate and not real reliable. They fit a niche though so some people love them. Good luck with it if you get one. I hope the production gods favored your purchase lol.
@@vikingskuld Oh I wouldn't get one myself. I'll take the weight and carry one of my real rifles if I had to. It's not like I haven't walked miles with my .270 before. Doing it with a 5.56 would be easy.
As neat as they are.... id still rarher have either a takedown ruger 10/22 or my old marlin 35a takedown. Adjustable sights, multiple repeated shots, reliable as any rifle can be and suppression options.
Sure they dont have real shotgun options but honestly you should be capable enough with the 22lr to not need a shotgun. Especially considering the m6 has no real slug capabilities. Since you cant sight the gun in properly.
A neat gun for the collection but not what im picking over the many other options.
Mine is a little more accurate than that , about 2 inches high at 50 yard , 410 is about the same as yours . I took the trigger guard off so it folds flatter in a pack and to use with a gloved or mittened hand , I use it when I'm snowmobiling mostly. Thanks for your videos.
Had mine for 40 years, never let me down 😂
Nice hearing protection you got there! Even with a .22, hearing protection is needed.
I looked and hungered for these things almost 25 years ago. I just stick with a basic single shot .410 that I grew up using. .410 was popular east of the Mississippi at the turn of the 20th century and all my older relatives had one. Took squirrel and rabbit easily as well as racoon, skunk and other small critters that messed with your garden or chicken house. I even have a hand loader for it from Lee. It isn't a long term out in the woods survival gun because I can walk out most places a box of shells isn't that heavy but I never carry hat many. It's not like I don't carry emergency supplies which contains communication in a protected case.
Good video. Thanks
Chiappa Little Badger or the Savage model 42 are both civilian versions of the M6.
One of the best arms for SHTF situations.
Use a laser bore-site to help you line up and non-adjustable irons.
Like it, I'm in the UK and we can have .22lr (in semi auto as well) and .410 shotgun so I'll have to find out but we might be allowed this over here :D
Good stuff, i personally perfer a single shot 12 and have several adapters for it. No the 22 adapters are not as good as a dedicated 22 barrel but does work especially for stuff like dispatching game on a trapline or other things.
The 22 should be more accurate from farther out.
I have a TPS arms 22mag/410. Ive had a springfield in the past. I find the TPS version has a much better trigger and better accuracy than the springfield. They are fun guns.
I seen a 22/ 20 Guage over under n wanted one since!
Great job on the video Dan
Awesome thanks
I think they are way overpriced. 410 ammo is way too high also. I'd take TD charger over one of these any day. Or as someone else mentioned go with a chiappa they have one similar to this with triggers. Can't promote the quality or performance but it seems like a better set up. You can get one similar to the old stevens o/u's called the chiappa double badger. You can get it in 12 or 20ga as well. Chiappa also makes a 22lr only option that looks very packable. **Edit** cool video though thanks!
I bypassed the military design and went with a 1022 takedown in a magpul backpacker stock. It's more accurate at any range and packs way better than the m6
I just bought this.
I think that the original one for the USAF had the rifle part chambered in .22 Hornet.Much more powerful than .22 LR but the ammunition is bigger and harder to acquire.I have seen various modern versions of such weapons in .17 HMR up rifle wise but the shotgun aspect pretty much restricted to either 9 mm Flobert or .410.
I never found the rim for every accurate. I preferred using the 410 for bunnies and had a second one in 22 hornet for larger game
I always wanted one in my collection.
with patience, you can add metal by brazing or use jb weld to the rear sight and file that new material down to adjust the accuracy. or if needed, just file down the existing if it's landing low.
Henry arms makes a packable rifle.
Thanks Dan, but I'll keep my ruger and remington.
Sweet rifle!!
🇺🇸🇺🇸🪓🔪👍🏻👍🏻
To answer the question in the title, No. These are really cool and interesting guns, but they were made for a very specific purpose, i.e. a small lightweight emergency survival gun that could fit in the ejector pack under the seat of a fighter plane. To be used if a pilot has to eject and parachute to the ground to hunt for small game for a period of a few days or maybe even just hours. They were not intended to engage enemy personnel, they were not intended to be used as an End-of-world survival weapon for months or years on end. Unless you are using it in a plane, I would say it is not a great chase for most practical purposes.
Great survival rifle... wish it had adjustable sights!
The tps arms version is elevation adjustable
Any gun is better than no gun in a survival situation.
It would be useful to pilots flying over wilderness areas.
Reminds me of Hatchet when I see these guns ifykyk
Would you rather have nothing or this? That makes it good enough for the time being if it's all you have.
Townsends/Coalcracker Kentucky rifle crossover when?
The 22 sight is probably dead on at 60y ards or 55 metres. Windage will vary by ammo more than anything.
Cool video
...Springfield Armory sold one in the 80s/90s.. ut wiyh a lever trigger
Who doesn't like guns? If you feel the need to make a confession go right ahead . . . just not in my presence. When I flew in the Air Force I would have loved to pack an M6 Scout, but we were issued the 9mm Barretta instead. Got to go with what they give you. Had lots of training with lots of gun time though. My ideal survival gun is the Ruger 10-22 which is what I carry. It's all tricked out. So many things you can do with it.
Cool
Very nice gun! Small, compact, light and holds it's own ammo! I would love to own one! But, unfortunately, back here in the UK us slaves are forbidden to possess firearms! Say, do they come in Black? Additional: if I were to redesign this weapon piccany mounting would definitely on of my considerations, also, I love the fact that it possess two different barrels. Beautiful weapon, never seen that one before. The M-6 Scout Master! I'll try to remember that after my next reincarnation when I'm reborn as a 100% full blown American in my next life. Many thanks for that demonstration Mister. Be safe out there. End.😊
You have to jump through some hoops (and it is immoral that there are background and psychological/medical restrictions) such as joining a club or having some other access to land but it’s possible in your country.
@@nickolasthefrog For the select only! The British Government are in the progress of banning Zombie Knives! Next, it will be crossbow's, then it will be broard head arrow tips, then it will be air rifles, survival knives Bowie's etc etc. The effect!? One half of the population have weapons, the other half for whatever reason "PROHIBITED!" The group forbidden are then Subject to the ones that have weapons, hence, the perfect environment for enslavement! History dictates that they attempted this same course of action to the United States back when the pre-americans were colonists. History also records the Cotton and Sugar plantation slave owners of the 16 & 1700's who forbid African Slaves the right to bare arms. The Same Masters, the same rules, the same plan. The only difference is that we are now living in a technological age, and THEY have learnt from Their mistakes of the past. When They have completed THEIR program here in the UK THEY will turn THEIR attention back on Your Second Amendment Rights. Infact, wasn't that the very reason why George Washington rebelled in the first place? Wasn't it for the very same reasons why the Declaration of Independence was created, with the British firmly in mind? "WE... ARE... SLAVES!!!" End.
Neat lit'l tool to have !
It's a neat novelty gun, but aside from the fact that anything is better than nothing in a survival situation, the single shot thing is its weak point. I wonder if it could have been designed for only .410 shells, giving you the option to carry both birdshot and slugs. I really like my Henry AR-7 because it's a 7 round semi auto. On the other hand, it is not a shotgun. I guess it depends on what kind of situation you're in which would work better.
.410: shot shell's are dimensionality identical to .44 long colt I believe. So a mixture of shells for the bottom barrel.
Biggest advantage of having a .22 upper is the very wide range of cartridges available.
Any thing from the very quiet .22 shorts upwards
Leighrate...
You should Never shoot anything out of a .410 barrel that's not a .410 shotshell... Unless you use a caliber specific adapter insert!
Yeah the .45’s work great out of mine almost dead on at 50 yards ( about 1/4 in high with a half inch bullseye)
Had both the .22 and 22 Hornet versions in stainless steel. Gave the .22 to my son. Wish'd I gave him the 22 Hornet instead. Nevertheless a decent utility firearm.
It might make an okay lost-in-the-woods gun. But as a general trail gun I don't like break barrel single shots. I'd rather a multishot 410/.45 or an over-under multishot rifle with a single shot shotgun in a bigger gauge. If the Taurus Home Defender had iron sights, I think that revolver with a 13" barrel and forestock might be the perfect ATV/trail gun, with a back rig -- indestructible. If S&W made a Governor model with a medium long barrel and forestock, I would be happy. Until then, when I need a trail gun, I'll stick to the Mossy Mav 12 gauge, which is a bit of overkill outside of grizzly country, but still the best standby overall. Imo.
I use my Belgian o/u 12 ga with chaszel 18 inch inserts in 357 mag 44 mag or 22 mag or 410 and it’s lite and breaks down and chaszel has 30/30 45/70 even the commie 7.62 and more. Check them out
Nice
That’s a clunky gun. It looks and acts like something three or four drunks would design in a dirt floor garage on a Saturday afternoon.

Only trouble is in the UK, not many people are allowed to carry nor own such things as rifles / pistols 😮😢
Should you track one down to purchase. Id say maby. I have owned a 22 hornet/410 for many years. It isn't a good 22. It isn't a good 410. It isn't a good backpack gun. It is mid at best in every category. However it is rare. It is cool. It is unique. It is different. It is fun. If you want one for it being a great gun id say no. If you want something you bring because its cool and you love it then fk yeah.
I had one but as a single shot on both barrels wasn't practical. They are about $1000 or so now. AR-7 or 10/22 is more useful.
Probably set for 50 meters
Thanks for Sharing. However, i prefer a firearm that has a greater ammo capacity.
Bad shot?
Just remember if you dont wanna be found then dont shoot unless you wannna be found. Croas bow or snaees. Once you shoot then people will find you.
I find the concept very cool. I’ll just carry a Ruger 10-22. I don’t think the 410 would be necessary in a survival situation.
I like my 10/22, but personally, I'm a fan of the Colt Woodsman's general concept (or Ruger Mark IV, S&W Victory, etc). An accurate, full-size 22LR handgun seems more convenient to me than a full-length rifle.
@@arKiteX3 a Marlin 30-30 if I had one choice overall. 😂
They are meant for 50 meters in 22lr
You may be able to put 45 long colt in the 410 barrel.
.452" projectile is going to be pretty damned tight in a .410" bore.
There are certain 45 Colt chambered guns that have the chamber elongated enough to accept and shoot 410 shells down that .452" bore, but the accuracy of the shot suffers because of the rifled barrel, and the accuracy of the 45 Colt cartridge suffers because of the elongated chamber and extreme jump to the lands of the bullet.
Good vid, different
Without adjustable sights I guess it's slightly better than nothing. I can hunt with my revolver in my holster from 25 yds, for comparison.
WRONG! The M6 was first made by Ithaka Arms . It is not for pilots, but AIRCREWMEN.
I had one in our USCG C 130 and H52s.
We were given rangetime shooting trap.
You don’t shoot the enemy with this.
The CZ will develop excessive headspace in .22 Hornet.
The original Service issue are shorter than

Oh, for a 2A guy dan?
“ this is my rifle. This is my gun. This ones for killing, this ones for fun. This one shoots bullets, this one shoots c--“
Love that for its vintage ness. Don't think I would be happy in the woods with that. I'd be thinking more of protection so I need something that is loud and would stop something like a cougar.
410 slugs or OO buck ?
Similar to Savage 14.
Is it able to fire .45 Long Colt from the .410 barrel?
No, it will not chamber the 45 colt. I tried it in mine just to make sure. 410 slugs work very well.
I'm guessing no. 410 shotgun is smoothbore, 410/45 needs to be rifled. The rifling would mess with your pattern, or a smoothbore would turn your 45 into an unstable slug.
Not this Version, but Chiappa has a version with barrel sleeves that allow the shotgun barrel to fire a number of different pistol calibers
That's what I was thinking. My curiosity was aroused.

No... they are not compatible.
