Yep, 100% agree. But having said that, I am pretty sure Plant knew the other meaning when he sang the lyric. LOL. I mean, i was 9 years old when this song came out.And if I knew the other meaning, i am sure a 20 year old rock star did too. But thats the genius of that lyric. Robert is over here most of the time as he lives not far from me in Worcestershire. First saw Robert and John Bonham when i lived in Brum in the 1960's , as they where members of the Birmingham band The Crawling Kingsnakes who played pub gigs in Birmingham and around the West Midlands. Great memories.
In the 70s, a female radio DJ on the BBC [UK] played this song. She hadn't heard it before. When it finished, there was a silence for a few seconds. Then, she cleared her throat and said, "well, that was a bit orgasmic, wasn't it?".

@bradsullivan2495 It could be but not at that he time this was written and released. Back door man was your lover who went in and also left by the Back door to avoid getting caught by your husband and neighbors.
Old guy here with advice with how to listen to any rock music before 1980 if you want the TRUE experience. OK, get yourself a turntable with 4 three-foot speakers (1 for each corner of your room). Then put the vinyl on and crank the volume to 10. Now you're in the late 60's to late 70's baby!!! There's no other real way.
Its amazing how interested younger people ( I'm 67) are in the lyrics. Many of us growing up in the 60s and 70s were mainly interested in the music itself. The singing was secondary to the guitar, drums etc
"Back door man" refers to the side guy - the guy a woman is cheating with on her husband/partner. The expression is used in many songs - Take a listen to Zeppelin's Since I've Been Loving You" (Epic Zeppelin song - the live version from MSG kills) - "I open my front door, I hear my back door slam".
This is one of my favorite songs, Led Zeppelin. Nice to see your wifey. Hope she really loves this song. Play any Led Zeppelin they are all great. Yes, it is classic rock. One of the best groups in rge 70's. It doesn't mean what you are thinking about back door
Never get tired to listen to Led Zeppelin. Saw them live the 1st time April 1970 in Montreal...I was 17. 50 years and + later , still my favorite band. I'm trying to remember if the radio stations were playing this song when it came out. 😏
Interesting question! I was 16 when I first heard this song, on 8-track tape, in my then-new-boyfriend's new Camaro with a great sound system! I can still remember the experience vividly, as if it were a recurring dream!! Anyway, my memory of it is hearing it in his car on 8-track. I do know there was a "radio edit" that took out the middle trippy part, but I don't know it anything was done to the lyrics????
Oh Good, you reacted to the Led Zeppelin II Album version. The entire album is one of the best-engineered vinyl records ever produced - Classic Rock 'n Roll at it's finest!! CRANK IT UP!!
i watched these 2 mates on youtube react to every zeppelin song in order from Led Zeppelin (I) to coda, many decades later i relived my first time through watching them
She's got a new heart throb! You can see it in her face when the close up of Robert comes by. "Back door man" Remember "in through the out door!" Double meaning actually.
Another LZ song with a similar theme, only even more straightforward, is "Black Dog." The theme of the back-door man was common in blues music, and all these big rock bands of the '60s and '70s were huge blues fans. And, as Randy pointed out, it just means the "side piece" guy who goes out the back door as the husband arrives home.
The part where the music drops out and Plant says “waaaaay doooowwwwn insiiiiide…” and there’s that echo, that occurred by mistake as they re-recorded this part on the same tape and the trace of the previous take bled through. They ended up liking the effect and kept it in the released version. I found that fascinating having learned that in another video, (Hat Tip to Rick Beato) Figured I’d share.
I am not saying it is what Led Zeppelin meant here but in oldem days and AC/DC A Backdoor man is a man who has an intimate relationship with a woman who is already in a committed relationship or marriage, often without the knowledge of the partner Not always talking about the BACKDOOR
I love your wife’s face when she heard I want to be your back spoof man it cracked me up she needs to listen to more LED ZEPPELIN ther are a lot of great songs
I was lucky enough to be around when Led Zeppelin hit the States like a thermonuclear bomb. In my high school, there was much tittering over the raunchy lyrics. We came for the lyrics and stayed for the music.
This song was used as the theme tune to "Top Of The Tops" (the biggest weekly music TV show in the UK for decades, but it hasn't aired - apart from annual Xmas shows - for a long time). They "modernised" the theme several times, but the original version was the best. Goldbug released quite a nice mashed up version (with the Pearl and Dean UK cinema jingle!) In 1996.
Untill my freshman year in high school the only music i had everheard was oldies rock because of my older brothers and sisters, country music because of my parents and soft rock from my sister whois 5 years older than me. Then came along a guy who i became close friends with in my freshman year. He invited me to spend the weekend with him and listen to him play guitar and he was s very good guitarist. The first thing he did when I got there was to put on the Led Zeppelin 2' album. This was the first I'd heard heavy rock music. Whole Lot of Love was the first song i heard. Needless to say my life changed that day in 1969. Now I'm here 71 years old and still listening to heavy metal and i will til the day I leave this earth. I have made my son promise to play two songs at my funeral. One being Freebird and the other is Funeral For a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding by Elton John.mi don't want it to be a sad day i want to go out rocking. Thank you guys for the memory. Willie Dixon wrote the song Back Door Man and Howlin Wolf sang it in 1960. It refers to a wife's secret lover who has to sneak out the back door when the husband comes home from work and also implies.... you know. The Doors covered the song on their first album. The phrase is in many songs, including Led Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You".

Then said “nice? Yeah no. lol you should really give that song a listen you HO!” 😂
Record in 1968. So far ahead of it’s time. Black Sabbath was the first Heavy Metal band a couple years later, but Led Zep were the first to truly venture into those seriously heavy waters. Incredible.

Led Zep is an education and an experience. They are unmatched to any other.
Stones play better rock and ROLL.
