MsDonttrythisathome excellent taste! I think our generation is sorely at a loss for not being acquainted with lovely Bill Powell. He's so modern and timeless more young people should know his work really. I try to introduce as many people as I can if I get the chance. Most people have heard of Spencer Tracey and Jean Harlow, but I'm the only person my age I know of who knows the wonderful Myrna Loy and William Powell!
3122tan Powell is so underestimated. He imbues Godfrey with so much dignity in My Man Godfrey, absolutely no condescension because he's homeless. Such a wonderful performer.
Love the part where Spencer Tracy's character thinks he's convinced Myrna Loy's character to drop the suit, when she tells him she's going to donate the money she wins to the employees of the paper. Such a great cast and you can see how much they are enjoying themselves.
Absolutely. I love the opening credits where they're walking arm in arm and laughing and you can see Powell say " here we go!" When she died, Tracy wrote in his diary what a great gilr Harlow was.
A great example of MGM star power when it was at its' zenith! Superb all star casts could even elevate mediocre films such as "Wife vs. Secretary" and "China Seas"
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Yes, one of mine too. I wasn't trying to take anything away, just making a point that sometimes these all-star casts helped some rather otherwise ordinary pictures. You should check out "Wife vs. Secretary' sometime in which Harlow gives a very good and restrained performance and is surprisingly adroit. It provides evidence she really had the makings of a fine dramatic actress as well as being a deft, funny comedian.
I see Steve Hayes as a superhero of pop culture: He carries us off to the magic world of the silver screen and saves human kind from yet another tedious family holiday! Greetings from Stockholm
One of my favorite comedies of the 1930s plus I tied down my reluctant sisters to watch it and they loved it! They became life long fans of all 4 of it's stars and have bought as many films of theirs as possible. A great pick to take us away from the present troubles of the world, if only for an evening's enjoyment!
Oh yeah this one so holds up! Could be released today! This is great i just found out sbout these videos - so its like watching a star 7-10-12 lightyears away! The light is just getting to me now!! How fun.
Steve! Next month you should do a film noir with Glenn Ford such as Gilda with Rita Hayworth or The Big Heat with your favorite Gloria Grahame. He was such a consistent figure in Hollywood from the late 40's onward, but he isn't talked about that often and I'm not sure why! Great video this month!
Flora Posteschild Wonder if Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell, Jimmy Stewart & Ruth Hussey all worked in the same building? Now it's Tom Hanks & Meryl. Ah, well...
I love your review and your Walter Connelly impression. I also love how you are spot on the greatness of William Powell's physical comedy talents. This man needs more recognition. He retired so many years before his contemporaries, that he is remembered as well. All the more remembered icons had great respect for him and his talents.
Yes, there was something so special about Harlow. She walks into a frame and you're instant;y delighted. In fact, you can't wait for her to come back whenever she's not on the screen. Her smile illuminated the screen like no one since. I adore her. Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I agree.. She had a type of innocence about her and timeless beauty along with her talent and genuine kindness. The camera absolutely loved her and the one liners were said perfectly. She was original and wonderful. We all miss "Our Baby".❤❤
@@valentinogal781 Yes and it's such a joy watching her get better and better as she learned the tricks of the trade with each picture. It would have been great to see her developemnt over time and away from the sex image. Radiant.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I would have love to have seen her in roles that were not sexually suggestive as well. Saratoga and Wife vs. Secretary were really good roles for her. ❤❤ She was quite simply enchanting and beautiful.
Steve,Another great review and surprisingly I never saw this movie before and like you a lover of classic films! So will now check it out. BTW,did you move, looks like a new location you are filming in? With the sad passing of Robert Osborne at TCM ,you should talk to them about going back as host.
Steve Great review. Did you ever review La Belle et la Bete? it may be my favorite film or at least the most special, And why not - the drop dead gorgeous Jean Marais playing three roles, directed by his lover Jean Cocteau, costumes by Escoffier, gorgeous score by Georges Auric and the unforgettable mask of the beast by Christian Berard I fell in love with it when I saw it as a teenager and now in a gorgeous Criterion blu-ray.
I love it too. When I went to Paris few years back I bought a gorgeous book on Jean Marais, in French, which I don't speak or read, but filled with photos. It is and he was exquisite. Steve
teaumanport First time I watched it, it didn't live up to its rep. But now I watch it every time it's on for those lead performances, enjoy it more every time I watch it, what wonderful work.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Min and Bill would be a old movie I can easily see you doing, fits perfectly what you review on channel. Marie Dressler/Wallace Beery , think Marie Dressler one best actress for Min and Bill, 1931.
Love it! One of the few times Spencer Tracy is always caught on the wrong foot. Well, his character at least. The grrl talk at the end when Myrna shows just how unflappable she truly is should be required viewing for any female who has "woman of the world" as a life goal. Harlow does the impossible by making her SO SHRILL character sympathetic and lovable...yes, she's demanding and overbearing, but she's so justified! So is Loy's character. It's one of the best movies about women and romance and how men are always using them and how to come out on top.
William Powell and Jean Harlow together. He was THE love of her short life.
Anything with Myrna Loy and William Powell together is worth watching.

I nearly think Powell could read the instructions to a vacuum cleaner and I’d like it.
