Santiago Peralta They're portraying this guy as a spoof of Dr. Oz, which his show is i guess you could say a spinoff of Oprah's show. A lot of stuff on his show has actually been proven false
I take vitamins, but that's mainly because I'm an extremely picky eater, and I also live in a Nordic country so it's pretty common to get a vitamin D definiency up here due to the lack of sun in the winter.
I've been severely medically malnourished, bloodwork still came out fine only lacking potassium (which is important, but not availible over the counter in pharmacies here). Multi vitamins are scams unless your doctor has done bloodwork on you and literally prescribes you certain vitamins.
@Dmitry Terek You know natural selection requires the unhealthy people not to reproduce and for the genes of those people to leave the gene pool? It doesn't happen in just one generation. If you're an unhealthy person, you don't just magically adapt. You die and let the people whose genes support the conditions reproduce and propagate their genes.
@Dmitry Terek You try cutting out sunlight and vitamin D from your diet and see how you feel. I suffer from a chronic vitamin D deficiency, especially because it's dark outside half the year, and whenever the sun comes back I feel better. Additionally, "blacks" don't have an innate lactose intolerance, only babies (ALL babies) have an innate tolerance of it. If your statement was true, no "black" baby could be breast fed. Adults generally lose this tolerance, because milk is made for babies after all, but tolerance can be kept or built up again by frequent consumption. Some people with European heritage just uphold their tolerance easier, because of how the dairy production and consumption throughout the centuries have affected their genes, just like some Europeans tan easier than others. At least study the topic thoroughly before you make assumptions.
Vit D deficiency is common. I think supplementing for that, especially in places without much sun is smart. (AND recommended by medical pros- IF you're deficient, and about 30% of us are. ) :) A little B12 for vegans like me is easy to get as well- nooch- but yeah, many extra vitamins are just totally unneeded to harmful.
This NEEDS to be said: If a doctor prescribes you vitamins due to you being deficient (the common one is Vitamin D, usually from lack of sunlight), you may need to take them to improve your general well-being. Too much of something isn't good for you but not enough of it is worse.
Mostly, yes. There are reasons when you may want to get higher doses than regularly (vitamin C lowers the probablity of getting cold under high stress, such as high physical activity in cold environment, and may shorten the illness) but you can do the same with high-vitamin food like the mentioned lemons (which actually are not so rich in vitamin C as people usually think, guavas, lychees and black currant are much, much richer but they don't taste good in your tea) as with expensive vitamin supplements. Manganese is a trace element, not a vitamin. You can get plenty of it from salad, fruits, nuts or whole wheat products. Not having enough manganese is actually extremely rare.
Adam isn't telling us to stop taking vitamins at all, just that we're probably taking one too many and that we should only be taking them if you don't get them in your diet. Even then, vitamins from food are always safer and more balanced than that from a pill. So, only take them if absolutely necessary.
+Dirk McKirk It's a clickbait titlte I think just to get people's attention. Saying vitamins aren't good for us rather than just vitamin supplements lures more curious people.
+Sean Fronteras exactly, I take some vitamins during flu season but I don't believe them to be cure all's. I take some zinc, D and NAC because they 'help' my immune system and I don't believe they will fight my bodies battles for me.
+T-FUTURE I think it's more likely that people use the terms interchangeably. How many times as a kid were you told to take your vitamins? When I was young they never said "vitamin supplements" to me.
FYI medical malpractice is the 3rd leading cause of death in USA. i learned long ago to be my own advocate when my doc almost killed me a few times due to his medical indoctrination / ignorant hubris. everyone take the time to learn about vitamins, herbal cures ect.... theres lots of crap vitamins, ppl often dont know how to take them etc....
Sleekcartim .sleekcartim even worse, those data of death rate is when they the treatment is correct, so allopathic medicine when used right is the third cause of death.
+RandomGamerCory No. Pesticides used to be very harmful, but due to their harm they were discontinued a while ago. It used to be that when you bought a fruit, you had to wash it in the sink before taking a bite. Nowadays however, pesticides mostly come in the form of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's) and are genetically designed to be resistant to diseases and pests. Those GMO's are not harmful by a long shot. In fact, most GMO's are completely beneficial to our health, although that does not mean all GMO's are safe. Whether something is genetically modified or not says nothing about it's safety.
+hassi44 just radiation to manipulate something older then they, not right just so people can enjoy things that are not native, convenient as toilet beside your bed but it also has its negative effects as well
Mr MoJo Risin Do you really think all radiation is harmful? You do know radiation is just energy expressed through heat and light. X Rays and Gamma Rays are what you [don't] need to worry about. Also DNA manipulation doesn't utilize radiation. You simple have no idea what you are talking about. Please, educate yourself before returning to this discussion.
But maybe that one doctor is right. Just like Darwin. He is a man from the 1800s yet billions have followed everything from his theory. First doesn't mean bad.
What Adam didnt address is the typical western diet doesnt provide you with all the of the necessary nutrients we *should* be getting. Which is partially the reason we have an obesity epidemic in this country (poor diet that is, not lack of vitamins) To suggest they are the answer to any sickness, I do agree is false. But to say "theyre not good for us" is incorrect and quite honestly a bit reckless on their part. The fact is we DONT eat a regularly balanced diet and this is why vitamin supplements are important for a lot of the people.
Jeremy Mack I thought that too until I went to my doctor and got a vitamin profile done. I was overweight and ate mostly junk food, but she still said it was a waste of time. I insisted and when I got my results back she was right. Only thing I was deficient in was iron. I got tested a couple years later and still was only deficient in iron and folate. I think a larger problem is some people not being able to absorb iron or other nutrients. I've never not been iron deficient. Even on iron supplements.
obesity problem has more to deal with level of activity, rather than diet, I lived in Jamaica for 17 years, and I ate exorbitant amounts of food, but... I was never overweight, because of the level of activity I had in Jamaica, I never actively took time out to exercise, but my day to day activities were more than enough, when just doing regular stuff like going to school, or getting something to eat, when I left Jamaica, I weight 180 pounds stably, and within 6 months of moving to the US I weighed 260 pounds...worse part of that is that I eat alot less here than I did back home, I now have to be putting time aside to get exercise, and to not eat too much...kids don't really need vitamins, unless they're suffering from a serious deficiency or medical disorder
Another thing that causes obesity is americas car culture. Ppl that dont walk get fat. Thats why there is a correlation between living in the suburbs and being obese
I feel that vitamin supplements are not NECESSARY as much as they are to be sure you have all of the ones you may not be having enough of. For example, I had a vitamin D deficiency a few years back because of my lack of sunlight hours and lack of dairy products. If I had partaken in more of what I was missing or taken supplements I would not have a deficiency.
+Shroomly Baby~ That is true, however, many people simply take multivitamin supplements to counteract a deficiency that they may or may not have. Many people just assume they have a deficiency when they feel ill when in reality all they have is a common cold. Those who do go to supplement a deficiency that they actually have often use multivitamins that supplement even those that they don't need. If you think you have a deficiency, go see a doctor. He/she will tell you if you do have a vitamin or mineral deficiency and will advice you on which supplements to take, if any. Most doctors will advice you to change your diet and activity schedule instead of suggesting supplementation, which makes sense since vitamin supplementation is solely a product marketed for profit and not to aid your health. Your diet and activity schedule should be enough to keep your vitamins and minerals in check, unless you have a disease that makes them necessary, in which case, a doctor wouldn't direct you to the local grocery store's health section but rather a clinic where you get those nutrients through an IV.
+Shroomly Baby~ you know how could you solve that? going out, eating dairy, you know things people are more used to do than taking weird distasteful pills and are both more productive and more efficient
FullmetalPink Yeah. Which is why I said that in my original comment. I'm saying if someone doesn't do something most people do then vitamin supplements serve a good purpose. I'm not saying multivitamins are the solution to all health related issues.
I just love the amount of effort put into every single cranny of the scenes, it's even ascended past the point that the messages conveyed in the show almost doesn't deserve some of the efforts people made. Amazing series.
Or if you eat the typical American/westernized diet in which people are deficient in countless nutrients helping to lead to an early death and lower quality of life. The average American or westernized dieter, falls short of a tremendous amount of nutrition. That's what eating a diet based around meat, eggs, dairy and refined foods gets you. We need to be eating a diet rich in and ideally, entirely made up of, fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts, beans/legumes.
Jake K wrong, soyabeans have all the essential amino acids and combination of food like rice and beans will provide you with the the essential amino acids
"if you have no cats (vitamins) you'll be lonely" tell that to the millions of children who die or go blind from vitamin A deficiency. Its not a small issue, malnutrition kills more than starvation.
+Isaac Gordon He's not saying you don't need any vitamins. When did he ever say that? Or, did you want him to show the dead bodies of starved african children? Would that have satisfied you?
This video kind of makes me sad. My father believed in vitamin megadoses and I got into an argument with him once about vitamin C. I had to look up Linus Pauling and explain that there wasn't any real evidence that megadoses work, and that it was wasteful and kinda useless to take large doses of vitamin C and that what he was already taking daily was more than enough. Of course, Adam pointing out that Pauling died of cancer isn't really an argument in itself, he was 93 when he died. Get to that age and it is not surprising to end up with some form of cancer. My father was also health obsessed and a die hard vitamin user, probably because he lived in such poor health most of his life from things mostly out of his control, and he made it to 90. Perhaps being health obsessed gives you longevity because you don't spend your time doing stuff more likely to get you killed.
Sometimes you can have a deficiency of a vitamin or mineral and supplements can help with that. Last summer I got severe plantar Fasciitis. All the remedies from the medical establishment said, don't walk, get massages, stretch. After 3 months it was so painful, but as an electrician moving is part of my job so I couldn't just sit back. Decided to take Usana, and within 30 days the Fasciitis went away. I thought could it be coincidental? So I stopped taking them, and within a couple of weeks it returned. Then started supplementing again and it went away.
My parents NEED to see this. They are both in the medical field, and belief that Emergen-C actually helps with a cold. I've told them thousands of times that it never helps me, and they don't agree.
There's nothing here implying taking a cheap multivitamin is bad. We do need vitamins after all, and not everyone's diet hits all the RDAs. What is true is that there's zero evidence that exceeding the RDAs has any benefit.
Basically anyone studying cellular biology should come to this conclusion. Once i learned (in high school!) what role ascorbic acid had in metabolic cycles, the very first thing i asked my tutor was...'so how exactly does this boost the immune system to fight off colds?'
Ignorance when matched with snarkiness always seems more convincing. Sure, there are lots of exaggerated claims, but supplementing micronutrients beyond what food can give makes sense and insures better health. Ignoring that is just idiotic.
+Nelson Montana No it doesn't. Giving your body more than what it needs causes problems. Too many calories, you get fat. Too much water, you get water intoxication. Too hot, you have a stroke. Too cold, you freeze. The same is true with vitamins. If you aren't getting something, that means your diet needs to be corrected. But if you are unable to get something, then you should take the *suppliment* as that is what they are. They aren't to be taken just because or in case. Too much vitamin C causes diarrhea (which can lead to dehydration and other malnutrition conditions as your body isn't able to properly digest), too much potassium causes muscle stiffness (and since you heart gets it first, and is a muscle, it will become harder and start to slow down and stop beating), and too much medication is the same like too much aspirin will cause sever ulcers (mostly in the stomach) that will have sever bleeding and cause internal bleeding to death (as once in your system, there is no way to get it out). In addition, if the body has what it needs, it doesn't preform better because you gave it more; that is saying if it isn't too much more. The body will do its best to discard the excess but will store a little bit just in case; but that is only a little bit. The only time you need to take supplements is if there is something that your body isn't getting or producing properly.
+OmniscientWarrior Not enough vitamin C can cause constipation. Not enough potassium can cause arrhythmia and a banana won't have enough potassium to correct, neither will OTC potassium - they only have 3% of your daily recommended amount. To get enough potassium to correct an arrhythmia by juicing kale daily, you would have to spend about $10 a day and drink ungodly amounts of juice which most people gulp down rather than sip throughout the day, missing the point of juicing entirely and not getting the nutrients the intended to get. People with chronic illnesses truly need vitamin supplementation regardless of their diet. And, many chronic illnesses are not caused by poor diet. Try getting bit by a tick.
***** It isn't hard for people to make sure that they get the nutrients that they need, even if they can only eat for a short while when they are at work. Just takes proper planning. Same with mountain climbers. I had a friend that was a single mom of two kids, one has autism. Guess what, she was a nurse. She never had issues with making certain that she and her kids got the nutrients needed without vitamins. All because of proper planning. Her autistic child would sometimes mess up dinner plans and decide that they want something different, but quickly doing something for one is pretty easy; this was extremely rare as she figured out how they can work together on dinner by the time the autistic child was 9 and only that late as that is when they started developing communication skills. Just because you don't know how to plan you meals out, doesn't mean others don't and nor can it be done. But yes, using something to allow you to not do what you need to is perpetuating a problem. If needed, and only when needed (not because of being lazy) should one take supplements (like the body not able to take in or produce what it should). But that would be more like using a wheel chair because you don't have legs or they don't work, versus using a wheel chair when you are full of energy and there is nothing preventing you from walking.
VERY few people eat a balanced enough diet regularly enough to actually not be very low/deficient in various areas. Very few people get enough B12 in general but that is especially true for vegans/vegetarians and D3(or 2, it doesn't matter for most people) is something almost everyone is low on and getting it from the sun is almost always more dangerous and greatly increases your risks for skin cancer. This isn't so black and white like adam makes it out to be (which is not uncommon for him, but heck... it is more of a shock if you tell people that they're completely wrong than the most likely truth that they're actually just 40-60% wrong and that there's also a lot more complicated nuance that goes into it. The name truTV fits because they never tell you the real complete truth.
You're crazy and you're peddling pseudoscience, just so you know. I hope you are aware that you are part of a group of crazy people that believe in things like homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic medicine, and other pseudoscientific medical remedies that do nothing but misinform and harm people.
This makes sense. Especially for people who don't have access to complete types of foods, some certain vitamins may be difficult to obtain. Multivitamins is more of a "make sure everyone gets one" thing than a "one pill cure all".
If you get a blood test and you have a vitamin deficiency, you should be taking supplements. I think this is targeted to self-diagnosing types that buy vitamins without suggestion.
I've been a vegetarian for over 15 years & don't eat dairy. I've had blood tests and I've never been told I'm deficient in anything (even iron & B12). I never take supplements. I eat more food that is actual food than chips, processed food, etc. I don't carefully count my food nutrition. Did I mention that I hardly ever get colds or any other sick even? Maybe once every 2-3 years I get a bug. I've never had a flu shot. I'm 43. I'm surrounded by people who swear by vitamins, throw away their money on them, yet have a cold every other month. I hate the sun but I was not told I'm short on Vita D. If a DR. doesn't tell you you are deficient in something specific, don't take supplements. I mean a real live doctor, not the people who feel like giving advice on the internet.
Studies have shown that animal milk (cow dairy i.e.) pulls calcium from your bones and is harder to digest. Because most people stay away from sunlight they aren't getting enough vitamin D (which isn't a vitamin but a chemical) therefore not able to produce calcium.
i cant say they are conclusive since ive only read a few studies, there are studies that show magnesium rich diets dont need large amounts of calcium. the magnesium aids in calcium and vit.d metabolism, the better the body can do that the more efficiently it used them. so we may actually need less calcium and vit.d than recommended. it was a gimmick decades ago that calcium is the biggest factor to strong bones. in reality, bones are made up of many vit. and minerals. the body can only handle so much. it then either gets rid of it or stores it.
No, those studies showed that animal milk pulls calcium from your bones when consumed in large quantities. Like, unreasonably large quantities. Like, replaced all the water you drink in a day with milk quantities. Get your fearmongering out of here.
There is a golden middle ground as usual. For example, If I don't take a multi vitamin a day I wake up with leg cramps in the night if is was a work out day. It never happens if I have taken just one cheap (less than 10 cents per pill) generic multi V. One multi vitamin a day is great and a very inexpensive insurance policy. Taking 600% of your daily recommended intake of anything on the other hand, is just a way of making expensive urine.
Actually, your brain thinks that the vitamin changes the situation, but really, you are the one putting your leg at fault through mistakes while exercising which can cause straining the leg, arm, torso, etc. the vitamin doesn't do jackshit. certain errors or mistakes while exercising cause the leg cramps you get. not taking stupid vitamin which don't do anything isn't gonna cause leg cramps.
Thing I learned the other day (I think after watching Adam ruin hydration fads): Pickle juice has been found to cure leg cramps faster than mere water. They're not exactly sure why, but apparently a couple ounces do the trick.
+Tobi Uchiha Middle aged women are the best clients of food supplements and "alternative" medicines. That's why it is massively marketed in female reviews. The only supplement you really need in Northern Europe/America is Vit D (especially if you have dark skin) based on studies because we have tendency to lack of it in Winter due to indoor work and short days.
+Aaron Luedemann Part of your statement I think you misworded and ended up giving an untrue statement. Vitamins do help with keeping the immune system up to par, but doesn't help when you get sick, just makes you less likely to get sick in the first place. However, if you are malnourished, then you aren't likely to get better either. And if you are already sick because you were malnourished, but then correct it, you are still going to be sick for just as long as you would have if you were never malnourished. Additionally, if you do get sick and you have the proper nourishment, then increasing the vitamins you take isn't going to help you at all. But as always is the case, take too much vitamins, you will develop other health problems that can cause you to be sick or sickly, or even die.
This is true in healthy individuals. However, there are people with anemia and other disorders which keeps them from properly absorbing nutrients, in which case, vitamins are essential for keeping them healthy and alive.
Kirsty Bailey Okay, I thought from what he was saying we just shouldn't take it. I don't really know how vitamins in the body works, somehow they found that out in a blood test. So I guess Vitamin D somehow has to do with the blood. (from what I was taught it sounded like all it had to do with was your hair and skin)
OddJaguar15 He's basically saying that we should have balanced diets, and we get the vitamins we need from that, so there should be no need to take extras. They can test a lot from blood tests - I had an iron deficiency for a while, so I had to take supplements.
I take a multi vitamin because after a blood test I found out I don’t have enough of most vitamins in my system. I’m eating healthier, but my doctor advised me to take a multi vitamin for what I may not be getting enough of right now. But he’s right, in many/most cases, ppl are already getting everything they need in their diets.
You should consult a doctor before taking any supplements. My doctor recommended taking vitamin D supplements because I was deficient. I was also the first kid in many years at BC children's hospital to have 100 percent cell death in my tumour. Kinda hard to say that's just a coincidence. Not to mention the Canadian government's website recommends vitamin d for a variety of cancers including breast cancer
Three things, a you were deficient and yes you should take supplements if you are diagnosed with a deficiency b do you really think you were the only kid at the children's hospital who took vitamin supplements and c it's not hard at all to say that was a coincidence, any number of things could've caused that outcome or it could have just been luck. Correlation does not mean causation.
Guy Person hi there. I was the only person with an osteosarcoma that took vitamins. The other kids didn't and they all lost their legs. Also the researcher who discovered a way to save the legs of osteosarcoma patients is now concluding that vitamin d can help kill bone cancer cells
+Rude Dog That's false. The placebo effect is psychological. Even if you consciously know something, your brain still wants to cling on to its former beliefs, and you psychologically will still feel the placebo effect.
Vitamins won't hurt you unless you have an underling kidney problem. Otherwise taking a multivitamin won't hurt you although it may be unnecessary if you do eat a well rounded diet. If you're like me and many people you don't know for certain that your diet is well rounded so the extra $10 every two months and the neon yellow pee after your first cup of coffee is a small price to pay for peace of mind. This Adam guy is entertaining but his use of studies that only direct to his POV is really starting to get in my crawl.
I had a doctor who told me that there are many medicine being sold because no one can really get it right. He was like take whether works for you since there is no one answer.
There is some evidence that vitamin supplements, in small amounts, can be slightly healthy. They don't cost much either and the gummies taste good, so it doesn't really hurt to have them.
+Jeremy Downey Yes, but small amounts, Vitamins are used by cells for communication and just like so it is in specific doses. Say your computer runs at 100 watts, giving it 200 watts wont make it twice as fast, it would just fry it, at same time low voltage would also result in a lower clock speed.
+Jeremy Downey Exactly. Small amounts. Each pill can contain your entire day's value of any one thing in addition to what you eat in food. Add to that some people believe this so much they way over medicate with exponentially more than their body can even process, damaging filtration organs like the Liver and Kidney.
+Jeremy Downey Adam's point is most people ALREADY get the 'small amounts' just from eating foods like a regular human being, and so there is nothing that is needing supplementation. that you should already have the required amounts, and unless you have a (im assuming he meant diagnosed) deficiency, there is not much point in taking them, other than the placebo effect. the placebo effect on the other hand though can be incredibly useful in recovering from colds and other ailments... so adam kinda ruined this on multiple levels for us. by telling us it has no effect, he took away its only effect...
Zoe you did such a great job on this video. Thank you so much. The photos you picked are so touching and I am so glad we will be able to view it whenever we want. Thanks again for a job well done. You Dad was so proud of you. He always told us how organized you are and how much he loved you and your brother and sisters. You were his life.
You guys should do an episode about psychedelics and marijuana use and its health benefits. I'd gain A LOT of respect for you if you took that risk, and I'm sure a lot of other people would too!
Pauling died aged 93 - they left that out - Pauling wasn't crazy either - there's some great interviews and and footage of him around. Adams ruins everything is a correct name for this as this it is poorly researched and ridiculously one sided citing only one source - The Atlantic.
This is a mass of strident over-simplification presented as if the case were closed. Judging by the certainty of tone, you'd think all research being led into the effects of vitamin and mineral supplementation might as well close up shop immediately. I understand that's part of the gambit of the show, but then if the rebuttal of common misconceptions offered is itself ultimately misleading, doesn't that defeat the point of this show in the first place? Research into vitamins, minerals, and nutrition is a constantly evolving field, with many studies contradicting others. There's much we still don't know, and new discoveries and recommendations are being made all the time. Anyone actually concerned with representing current thinking in this area would, I expect, advise a cautious open-mindedness.
This is often how argumentation works. People get sucked into the ethos of Adams new found authority, how ever that doesn't mean that everything he says is true... or at least it seems that he often nitpicks facts in his favor. The show would be no where near as successful if everything were "uncertain" or showed both sides of what Adam is trying to prove. When seeing things like this, I'd definitely agree it would be a good idea to do your own research to back up his facts, rather than simply taking his word for it. Unfortunately some people blindly follow everything Adam says... so in some ways he might be spreading more falsification than was originally intended by this show.
Although Adam simplifies, he summarizes pretty well what scientists know and epidemiologists have demonstrated: the general population in industrialized countries does not need vitamin supplements to be in good health. Of course, people who have nutritional and specific vitamin deficiencies most often need vitamin supplements. ... but not the general population. Do not confuse marketing by vitamin supplements makers with science..! Health scientists and marketers of health products are most often on opposite sides. Adma is on the science side, here.
I'll call you on this one. When I was in my 30's I took large doses of many vitamins. Within 6 months EVERYONE was paying me compliments about how great I looked. (And I did I've never looked or felt better).
Doctors still prescribe prenatal vitamins to pregnant women. Also, I was abused as a child and suffered enough malnutrition that my hair fell out. I got hold of some vitamins and it stopped falling out... I think for most people vitamins don't make a difference, but if you have a deficiency it probably does some good. or in the case of pregnancy, your body is using a lot of vitamins all at once. Still, not fair to say vitamins are useless. They are very useful and maybe a bit like magic to people who really need them.
GrumpyCat Iron vitamins are VITAL to many women because they lose a LOT of iron during menstruation! This guy is not right about everything and this is one such time he's WAY OFF.
Well, Iron is not really a vitamin. And clearly, he was only talking about vitamin supplements. I have a degree in Human Nutrition and agree with him for 90% of his points. I take Vitamin supplements sometimes, if I know that I won't be able to eat properly for the whole day.
Matches Malone Today's modern foods have little to no nutritious value. The foods that do are so expensive they are only for the more wealthy of Americans. Vitamin supplements are a necessity for the average American.
Been taking a vitamin C supplement for a very long time and there was this time when I missed doing it and I got the flu. Never missed taking vit c supplement ever since and can't remember the last time I had a flu. So this is just a coincidence?
Ramir Enriquez I don't take supplements. :P You don't need them if you have a diet that is well rounded. Your body gets all it needs from your food. That being said, they are often used in areas that don't have enough food variety. Such as poor areas in nations such as China, Indonesia, and so forth. But if you have a deficiency, then that is what supplements are intended for.
You got sick because you were over-correcting. You'll also remember your notes better when drunk if you studied while drunk. Basically, you're creating an unnecessary dependency.
+dumb guy nope not gonna happen religion is mainly based on faith. other than the fact that it would cause too much controversy, faith in god is not exactly something you can disprove. please stop this religious hate respect the choice of others.
Gabriela Martins and why is it offensive? if everything religion has said about the world is true then why is criticism so bad and offensive? science, for example, embraces criticism.
Adam's doing a good service, but I can't shake the feeling that he's falling into a habit of depicting his opposition as stupid, ignorant, or naïve. I know they're supposed to serve as a comic foil, but isn't that off-putting to the people who deeply believe in this stuff?
At the end of the month, when I have spent all my money and I cannot afford proper food, I sometimes take a multivitamin pill to get some of the useful stuff that I can't get from plain macaroni. The key word here: sometimes.
"Who gave you a medical license?"
"Oprah"
I see what you did there
care to explain?

Some vitamins are Important though and on the standard American diet can't be achieved.
+MrOoglebog Examples?
Then I should buy some manganese...
Yes, because the standard American diet consists of nothing but Diet Coke and french fries. Ok.

Only one doctor in the 1950's said that we need to drink 8 glasses of water a day and people still believe it.

What Adam didnt address is the typical western diet doesnt provide you with all the of the necessary nutrients we *should* be getting. Which is partially the reason we have an obesity epidemic in this country (poor diet that is, not lack of vitamins)
To suggest they are the answer to any sickness, I do agree is false.
Even on iron supplements.
i LOVE that... thank you!!
obesity problem has more to deal with level of activity, rather than diet, I lived in Jamaica for 17 years, and I ate exorbitant amounts of food, but...
I completely agree! Vitamins can be beneficial in some cases!

Your dad sounded like a sensible man.
Pauling dying of cancer is an argument because he claimed his vitamins would prevent such. Also he was a supporter of eugenics.

"The Weird Reason We Think 'MORE' Vitamins Are 'BETTER' For Us (They're Not!)"
Ignorance when matched with snarkiness always seems more convincing. Sure, there are lots of exaggerated claims, but supplementing micronutrients beyond what food can give makes sense and insures better health. Ignoring that is just idiotic.
Exactly!!
OmniscientWarrior I think you're missing the point. Anyway, I've have hundreds of published articles on the topic, but maybe I'm wrong.
Alicia Danielle That is when you go to supplement what you need but can't get. You don't supplement what you are getting and are filling the need.
2:18 that noise that Todd Bodd makes

*****
Then it sounds like use of pills is just to treat the problem and perpetuates it further.
*****
It isn't hard for people to make sure that they get the nutrients that they need, even if they can only eat for a short while when they are at work.

I take calcium but that's because I had to cut out dairy and doubt I eat enough calcium rich veggies or nondairy calcium enriched foods.
All vitamins are chemicals.
No, those studies showed that animal milk pulls calcium from your bones when consumed in large quantities. Like, unreasonably large quantities. Like, replaced all the water you drink in a day with milk quantities.

Actually, your brain thinks that the vitamin changes the situation, but really, you are the one putting your leg at fault through mistakes while exercising which can cause straining the leg, arm, torso, etc. the vitamin doesn't do jackshit. certain errors or mistakes while exercising cause the leg cramps you get. not taking stupid vitamin which don't do anything isn't gonna cause leg cramps.

actually, anything is bad for your health if you take too much of it. anything really.
+Electro phobia I thought vitamins helped with colds...

Yeah, if you have a proven deficiency, taking vitamins is okay.

Okay, I thought from what he was saying we just shouldn't take it.
I still take a multi-vitamin to cover my bases in case my diet is momentarily poor.

Some people refuse to believe they're wrong.

This Adam guy is entertaining but his use of studies that only direct to his POV is really starting to get in my crawl.
japhygato stfu
STFU is the response of a person without an argument. Piss or get off the pot.
japhygato I agree, he does cherry pick doesn't he?
I had a doctor who told me that there are many medicine being sold because no one can really get it right. He was like take whether works for you since there is no one answer.
There is some evidence that vitamin supplements, in small amounts, can be slightly healthy. They don't cost much either and the gummies taste good, so it doesn't really hurt to have them.
+Jeremy Downey Then just buy gummies, at least then you're not supporting a snake oil industry.
Neurotic Knight That was exactly my point. Small amounts is good.
Vitamins just make your pee expensive
You guys should do an episode about psychedelics and marijuana use and its health benefits. I'd gain A LOT of respect for you if you took that risk, and I'm sure a lot of other people would too!
I need to load up on cats, dunno what you're on about
Literally speechless, how come I learnt more on these subjects in 5 minutes than my entire life
Pauling died aged 93 - they left that out -
Pauling wasn't crazy either - there's some great interviews and and footage of him around.
Adams ruins everything is a correct name for this as this it is poorly researched and ridiculously one sided citing only one source - The Atlantic.
"You could trace every disease and every ailment to a mineral deficiency."
"Airborne doesn't cure anything, it's basically just bubbles."
True dat Adam!
Anyone actually concerned with representing current thinking in this area would, I expect, advise a cautious open-mindedness.
no ur wrong lol
Can we just talk about:
"It's bad."
"You know it."
This guy is not right about everything and this is one such time he's WAY OFF.
prenatal vitamins are essential for pregnant women but the vitamin supplements we take do nothing
Well, Iron is not really a vitamin. And clearly, he was only talking about vitamin supplements. I have a degree in Human Nutrition and agree with him for 90% of his points. I take Vitamin supplements sometimes, if I know that I won't be able to eat properly for the whole day.

Today's modern foods have little to no nutritious value. The foods that do are so expensive they are only for the more wealthy of Americans. Vitamin supplements are a necessity for the average American.
Your Research Is Amazing!
Been taking a vitamin C supplement for a very long time and there was this time when I missed doing it and I got the flu. Never missed taking vit c supplement ever since and can't remember the last time I had a flu. So this is just a coincidence?
Correlation is not Causation
I haven't had the flu for years myself, but I don't take supplements either.
+Comrade Silly Otter This got me thinking really. Not a single supplement at all?
Ramir Enriquez I don't take supplements. :P
You don't need them if you have a diet that is well rounded.
Great!!.Now we need an episode on chemotherapy and radiation 👍
Already done
do a religion episode pls
yes
+dumb guy nope not gonna happen religion is mainly based on faith. other than the fact that it would cause too much controversy, faith in god is not exactly something you can disprove.
please stop this religious hate
respect the choice of others.
+dumb guy dude i´m not religious but i know for sure that´s an awful idea and kind of offensive
Ace Child no, i like to hate religious people. they are generally ignorant and there are many charts out there that can tell you that lol.
Gabriela Martins and why is it offensive? if everything religion has said about the world is true then why is criticism so bad and offensive? science, for example, embraces criticism.
The title was 'Adam Ruins Everything - The Weird Reason We Think' on the sidebar and I thought, oh god here we go on another existential horror ride.
The key word here: sometimes.
check 2:47 thank me later
One of my favorite episodes! So on point!
