Medical care without insurance isn't an option for MOST people. Additionally, insurance isn't affordable for nearly as many people as they would like you to believe."
No to low income people qualify for free or reduced cost Medicaid to accommodate their lack of income to pay for insurance. Basically if you're between 19 and 64 and do not have insurance through any other means, you will almost undoubtedly qualify for reduced cost if not free depending on your situation. If you're under 19, your parents have options for free coverage. Unless you're making 4x the poverty wage in your area or are an illegal immigrant, you should qualify for it to some degree. Even entry level jobs tend to have insurance benefits. People tend to decline them because of cost, but it's still cheaper than the taxes we'd pay with universal healthcare options. Even in these situations, the government provides low cost alternatives. A study done in 2018 suggests that very few uninsured people ever explored government provided options and most would have qualified for affordable or free healthcare.
@@sleepy1697 Entry level jobs? First you have to be highered as a full time employee to even have that option of being insured through your employer. If groceries were free or next to nothing for low income people, they would buy far more then just what they need which drives up the cost for those who make too much money to qualify.
@@rustyshackleford1325 That's kind of my point. With government subsidies health care already costs an arm and a leg. Now we want to drive the cost even more by making the government pay ALL of it? Remember the government pays for things out of YOUR pocket. If we stopped subsidizing it, the price drops to where average people can afford it.
@@sleepy1697 Your saying the cost of medical services will decrease without the funds from subsidies? It's impossible. The government has shown time and time again that its incapable of tying it's own shoes. @@rustyshackleford1325 You're contradicting yourself... a lot. I don't know if you realize that. Ok let's try to make it simple. In this example, I run a hospital. Now imagine that suddenly the government STOPPED supporting people entirely. The first thing that happens is that 60% of the population (if not more) can no longer afford my services. Since the absolute majority of the population can't afford it, I'm required to reduce the cost if I want to stay in business at all. Cost (when the government isn't involved) is based on availability, customer want, and customer wealth.

Now this is WAY WAY WAY lower than than tobacco and alcohol, but this show is about accuracy and understanding, so I think it's important to have all the facts.
Actually! There are some even more interesting studies that suggest that cannabis can actually decrease the likelihood of strokes. The problem with that though is that you'd have to take it within the first few hours of a stroke or before the stroke even occurred. Cannabis can be beneficial in that regard but only by slim chance and through very particular circumstances.
@@gracejohnston736 Indeed - this is because cannabinoids are very good at flipping switches in our nervous system. The most common way to see this is with "red-eye", which happens when cannabinoids cause blood vessels in the eye to dilate quickly and then contract shortly thereafter, damaging them. Its this same mechanism that means cannabis can both cause AND treat stroke. When it causes it, it's because of the dilate/contract flip. When it helps treat it, it's because it's counteracting the the stroke itself. This "opposite effect" isn't unique to blood vessels. Because cannabis "flips switches", it makes some people mellow, and others paranoid. It makes some people hungry, but it makes others queasy. This is also why it's so hard to do good research into cannabis - when a chemical can cause opposite results in different people, it's almost impossible to build a robust clinical profile for a medicinal drug.

There is no inherent "instinct", in any real sense for how to deal with these problems (the whole common sense is neither common, nor sense, thing), but its likely that someone has either given, or tried to give, one, which isn't based on any real world results, data, or other confirmation of its viability, but it seems to match preconceived prejudices. The rich almost always, especially if its inherited, think they got there via merit, not accident. Business almost always only sees how many years if spent making a profit, not how many times it screwed up, so assumes that doubling down on what gained them profits is always the best path - even when doing so has clear, and logical, consequences, like reducing the number of people that can actually afford their product, and, by extension, *must* naturally result in a point of no return, where its not possible to increase profit, without losing too many of the people that still can afford the products. Politicians.. tend to be a mix if these, along with a sort of self fulfilling mania, in which they assume that they where chosen as representatives because they had the best ideas, therefor they will always have the best ideas - and, it would never occur to most of them that maybe they where elected because they actually had really bad ideas, and the public just didn't understand how bad they where. All of these things have a circular nature as well. The rich people have to keep succeeding, to prove to everyone else how much better they are, which leads them to celebrity, which proves to them that its all working as intended. The corporation has branches that explain to the public why its a good thing that something that costs less to make actually costs more to buy now, which, if it works, feeds the public perception of it having greater value, which feeds the other half of the corporations view that they have something valuable, and can get by with making it cost more, which them has to be "explained" to the public. And don't even get me started on the infinite loop you see in politics, where a party, or candidate, constantly feeds press sound bites about how great a job they are doing, to "inform" the public, who them reelect them, based on the politicians own self reported success and desire to do the right thing, which further convinces the politician that they are on the right path, and always have been - right up until they suddenly find themselves face to face with a public that is no longer buying it, and elects someone else, who isn't regurgitating all the same old party ideas. Something the leadership of "both" parties are kind of running into, with people jumping ship on the GOP, having gotten fed up with the nonsense and cowardice, and the "wrong people" getting elected by the Dems, to the absolute incomprehension of the "leadership", who *still* can't grasp why a lot of people didn't really wanted Hillary (even if they did vote for her), and, yep, most don't want Biden either, for the same reasons. The endless loop is breaking, and garbage is spilling out of the machine, instead of being cycled back in through the input again, to produce more garbage. And, they have no idea how to handle it, other than to keep arguing, "But, but, this is what you want, we know it is, you kept electing us! You can't suddenly think this is bad!!"
@@julianauston9001 Hmm. Hope you read it all, there will be a test later. lol Seriously though, yeah, I know I can sometimes get a bit.. wordy, when trying to explain a point. Not sure if shorter is good or bad. Most things, I think, deserve more engagement than that.

Solitary confinement was a rare practice in the 70s, used when an lgbt individual went to prison. Originally the logic was that the prison population will murder them, so they have to be put in solitary to stay safe. This practice was seen as a useful and easy way to deal with inmates, so it started to catch on in the late 70s, and then in 1980 blew up and became standard, due to the drug war, of all things. Nixon's drug war didn't much enforcement, except at people he wanted arrested, then Carter thought this was silly so he federally legalized weed. In response when Reagan came into office he reinstated the drug war, but this time with a high number of arrests. In the US one has a right to a speedy trial. That is, if a judge can't see you in time, you get off all charges dropped. The Reagan administration witnessed this happening, so they changed the way the judicial system works. They turned it into an assembly line, so one judge specializes in a certain kind of case. Now you have traffic judges, family law judges, and judges that specialize in illegal drugs. The side effect from this is if a judge sees the same case hundreds of times a week, let alone for decades, they unconsciously become bias, because most cases they are guilty. This wrecked the judicial system in the US and is considered the single largest erosion in freedom in the US, to today. During this surge prison populations boomed. One solution to this was the up and coming solitary confinement.
Though I agree with a lot of the things that you say. The makeup of the judicial systems and the splitting of court systems into various types of court is controlled entirely by state law, not the federal government/ Regan. I do agree that it has the tendancy to create bias, but it also has the tendancy to create a body of judges that are well versed in their particular field of law and can prevent truly incorrect judgements based on having to conduct a wide variety of cases in fields of law that can be extremely complicated. I believe there should be some rotation of the judges in these systems to combat the bias, but in cities that have thousands of cases, having separate courts often leads to the greater efficiency of the system, reducing the cost for both the state, plaintiffs, and defendants. I personally believe we have over criminalized everything...too many crimes lead to prison time. Some states do not have the segregated type court systems, because they just do not have the population to justify the specializations.
Angel I just read the first paragraph of that and I did not know that, ha it was a bad idea but there are actually really nice to try to protect the person and not just let him be killed
I don't remember if it was explained in the episode but from how they describe it being used here, apparently prisions use it because it is easier for them- isolating "difficult" inmates and saving space- so it is sort of implied why when most of the rest of the episode is on the for profit prison system
Wait how is hating on Columbus controversial? Did anyone who disagrees know him in person? I assume these videos were picked according to which had the worst like/dislike ratio.
Because generally, if you agree that Columbus is not a good guy, then you also think we shouldn't have a holiday for him. Or a city named after him, let alone a state capital. So basically, it comes down to Columbus being glorified in the past, so to actually teach history and act based on it is somehow seen as an attack on 'Murica.

@@82cj8 I never defined the term "hottest" 'in my argument yet. Maybe hottest refers to the largest number of consecutive heat waves? Or maybe the highest concentration of heat waves in a certain area? Maybe hottest year refers to the largest number of local records broken? Also I never said 2019 is the hottest year so far, I just insinuated that 2019 is ON TRACK to becoming the ***Hottest Year Ever!***, as we've just had a hell of a summer.
I realize your point, that right now because of the lagging jet stream (I actually highly doubt you're actually aware of this so I'm probably just cultivating your argument right now), we're going to have hot summers and cold winters, but isn't a climate phenomenon like that exactly your problem? If temperatures become even more polarized, the climate will become even worse than it was before. It'd honestly be cool if he did a whole episode about common misconceptions of mental disorders and their dark history...like lobotomies.
For autism, I would rather he focus on the less hot-button, overblown topic of vaccines and autism that has been proven incorrect time and again, and do one that focuses more on autism itself and how autism isn't an on/off issue that it's commonly portrayed as. There are varying degrees to it that only now the medical field is finally catching up with, and it affects far more people than you'd think.
Think about different levels of how lazy people can be. You can be slightly lazy about some things, like getting out of bed, but in most things you are not. Adam: "Hold my tea."
Me, without insurance: "Freaking finally someone said it!!
Not only that, the cost of treatment has skyrocketed because there is no real competition in that market anymore. If people aren't paying for their medical what the hell do they care if it costs $9 for a 2pack of advil during a hospital stay.
Not only has healthcare become far more expensive since Obamacare was passed, the quality of care isn't nearly as good. The #1 priority of the healthcare system now is avoiding lawsuits instead of improving quality of life for the patient.
@@rustyshackleford1325 You're contradicting yourself... a lot. I don't know if you realize that.
Ok let's try to make it simple. In this example, I run a hospital. I base my prices off of what my customers can afford. All of my customers are getting subsidies from the government to give them healthcare, which means they can afford anything, which means I can charge anything, so I'm going to charge an insanely high amount.

@ALSO-RAN ! ...Please elaborate
@ALSO-RAN ! Explain to me how Adam lies to people. What are his lies?
@ALSO-RAN ! The wall: Adam proved a point in saying that most immigrants do not enter the US through the ground but rather on planes and political loopholes. The news focuses on all the action stories of people entering the country through trucks and trains and sneaky action movie plots. But they don't cover the more typical way of entering which is just to continue living past their visa. The American healthcare system is definitely not considered the best in the world. Who told you that? The high survival rates and lifesaving equipment and the "much more advanced" system is literally just modern Western medicine. Countries like Canada and the UK have the same types of system with far more practical healthcare costs. I don't know how you're determining "The greatest" but I would assume a large part of that would be pricing. And for that, America is no where near the greatest. Christopher Columbus did not directly lead the age of discovery. One man can not start the great thing known as human curiosity. People have been travelling and discovering for centuries. He just happened to set sail at a time when technology allowed for more travel. And in no way did she "shape the geopolitical landscape" unless you're talking about the decimation of tribes. Geopolitical means the politics based on surrounding geography. He did nothing for that. Lastly, guns laws are not racist but the people who created them and "enforce" them are racist. Laws are supposed to keep crime low but corrupt and cowardly politicans and cops choose to use those laws as backing for racist actions like killing innocent black people. And while the Black Panthers sure did a lot of terrible stuff, so did the police.

In the interests of honesty, it's worth noting that pot can cause an ischemic stroke. It's death number are probably in the single digits per year.
Now this is WAY WAY WAY lower than than tobacco and alcohol, but this show is about accuracy and understanding, so I think it's important to have all the facts.
Not so fast, it's inclusive: www.webmd.com/stroke/news/20181019/stroke-rates-higher-among-pot-users#1

Controversial: definition - Anything inconvenient to big business, politicians and/or the stinking rich.
@@simonwood635 Hmm. Point. Though, "emotional" thinking is, kind of by definition, not really thinking. Its more often than not a liability, which allows others to mislead.
You could think of it a bit like trying to learn martial arts by watching bad movies, and trying to mimic the moves. Your muscles still gain a "memory" to work off of, but in an actual situation where those moves are needed, absolutely none of it is likely to work, and "fixing" this means not just learning the right way to do things, but unlearning the wrong way.
The same goes for solutions to problems.
@@patrickelliott2169 This is an essay. Wtf.

Seriously though, yeah, I know I can sometimes get a bit.. wordy, when trying to explain a point. Not sure if shorter is good or bad. It may be good in that you get fewer wtf situations, or tldr (always disappointing when the subject is complicated and they seem to only want a sound bite), but the alternative is often that everyone leaves having no real clue what the F was actually talked about, because it all had the depth of a bathtub (or maybe kitchen sink).
Most things, I think, deserve more engagement than that.

Yes, but emotions can lead to either an increase or decrease in skill. If you have an a emotional motivation, you can have much more skill for a reason to do said thing... but it can also lead to what you said.
@@lazyboi2373 It can keep you from being distracted, certainly, but it doesn't improve skill. I am sure it wouldn't take much at all to find plenty of studies on how too much emotional investment leads to "over estimation" of ones skill level. In fact...

He never explained why they suddenly brought back solitary confinement
I think he did an episode on solitary confinement
I don't remember if it was explained in the episode but from how they describe it being used here, apparently prisions use it because it is easier for them- isolating "difficult" inmates and saving space- so it is sort of implied why when most of the rest of the episode is on the for profit prison system

wouldnt that be controversial, if a lot of people dislike it?
@@dragonstory15 no they're asking why a video on how Columbus was bad has a bad like to dislike ratio

There is definitely some false equivalence here. Apparently, Adam being debunked on guns equals "WRONG ON VIRTUALLY EVERYTHING," with no other evidence other than him on a podcast, which is pretty unrelated to the actual show since most of the research and writing is supposedly not done by him. What this is referring to is Climate Change, and they are definitely two different things. Climate change is a completely naturally occurring event that has always taken place.
