Thanks, that will be the approach with 52 weeks as well. One week of science, biology, and why we do it. The following week the tools to achieve the goals.
Matthew is a class act and glad to see him join up with Ryan. 15yrs of reefing with BRS. Epic! Thank you Ryan for all the valuable information you have shared with the community over these years.
I can't tell you how stoked I am to see the two of you do a vid together. You realise that the combination of your 5 minute guide, 52 weeks of reefing, and ultimate beginner series is what built my tank? You talk about mentors in this vid- well dude, the two of you are the primary mentors to many of us I can promise you that. Keep on kicking ass both of you, and thanks for guiding us to success in this awesome hobby (lifestyle)!
You are for sure my mentor. I watched every single video months before starting my tank. It’s a 40 breeder with 20 gallon sump w/fuge. Although it’s small with a handful of fish, invertebrates, and corals it has been very successful and brings me loads of joy. I’m glad I found your channels when I did. Thank you for making this hobby so enjoyable for us beginners.
Totally agree completely about you guys touching on making sure it’s the right time to set up a tank, I was amidst a massive downstairs renovation, which included a 500 litre in wall tank, the custom install had eaten a vast amount of time anyway but I decided to fill up the tank, run through cycling and added fish and corals, it was the single most stressful thing I ever did as I was trying to protect the tank mid renovation, had to consider noise and paint fumes, and the tank required the daily maintenance that was taking time away from the renovation, luckily (not really the correct term) I had a white spot outbreak because I rushed and I chose to move my fish and coral to a Red Sea 170, after copper treatment it forced my hand to shut the big tank down and power on with the renovation, you really need time for this hobby to do it right, I loved that you guys touched on that
Congrats on making 15 years! I started in the hobby back in the early 2000s and then got out of it for a while. When I came back recently the biggest game changer in the entire hobby for me was the Bulk Reef Supply videos. Everything was so much easier with some videos that broke down complex concepts and explained them in plain english. I definitely have you guys to thank for going as far as I have this time around.
People who I would consider mentors: Lighting: Dana Riddle Disease: Humblefish Chemistry: Randy Holmes-Farley Coral Specific Care: Tidal Gardens A bit of Everything: BRS ❤️
Really glad to see you bring Matthew to the live stage, truly enjoy his content even without being new to the hobby anymore. Thanks Matthew!! Thanks BRStv
Teaching a consistent path of success does far more than ensure a single aquarium's health. It ensures another generation of mentors and experts multiples larger.
3:23 I always explain it as, picture yourself inside a bubble constantly breathing. That fresh air is eventually going to be gone. Now if you for once a week just open the bubble up and let some fresh air in, you'll be much better off and survive.
You guys might be onto something with this dynamic duo some pretty good chemistry going on from what I can tell! It brings the experienced and the newbies together and a fine blended well-balanced show thanks guys
Really enjoyed this - validated much of my approach to the hobby after 12 years of doing it. One thing, respectfully Ryan - your use of the word “council” - if you mean “advice” the word you’re looking for is “counsel.” I’m a stickler for correct usage lol. Looking forward to the next 15 years! 👍🏻
Love #10, my tank has been up about a year. So far have lost 2 hermits and a cyphastrea. I tried moving it a couple times to lower light, but unfortunately never looked great after it arrived. All other coral and fish alive so far 🤞🏽
I've tested out multiple methods to increase PH. I've tried co2 scrubbers, refugiums, trying to oxygenate more, kalkwasser, etc. The best way I've found is to use an Apex to turn an Ecotech Versa on/off that doses a kalkwasser reactor full of Sodium Hydroxide. Calcium Hydroxide just wasn't strong enough, and I was dosing more than the evap rate to keep my PH up. Sodium hydroxide is so much stronger that just a tiny bit pegs my PH 24/7/365 with minimal dosing. My PH sits between 8.35 and 8.36, until my kalkwasser reactor needs to be topped up with RODI.
Matt that's one thing I like about watching your videos you do concentrate on the beginners and that's so important Advance obvious don't need to have them set up a tank they already achieve that it's the beginners that need to be taught I've been doing this hobbies for over 30 years I remember starting out with just a back filter under gravel filters and we got cotton and sand out of our pet store and that would start our bacteria I remember what I'll be pretty emphasized on having no phosphates or nitrates in the tank and now all sudden it's a big deal man things have changed another thing I've learned in the hobby you don't need all that fancy Yuppie Stuff
A series for an intermediate/advanced reefer should not start from an empty tank. Most have a reef and want to better understand what they actually have and how they should take it to the next level (could also be making it simpler to be able to continue reefing when life inevitably changes).
Would love a video about fish lifespans! The fish dont just die thing got me a lil... none of my fish are younger than 15yrs... one day this will happen where they just randomly pass. How can ya tell when something is legit just getting old. 5-7 yr captive lifespan is no help to me anymore😅
It's just a real part of the journey. One of the many reasons why aquacultured / farmed coral is a way better recommendation for us all in the first few years.
Great to see Matthew in Minnesota! So yeah that #7 did rub the wrong way. If we actually had a lot of peer-reviewed science, that would produce progress, and the complete absence of that is the problem. The compelling evidence that isn't scientific hasn't produced progress at all- that seems obvious- but it has produced the flip-flops of advice you've discussed here (...and thus sold a lot of snake oil- this too is a fact I'm afraid). "Zero nitrates! Wait- not zero nitrates!" Etc. So much of what passes for sound advice in the hobby is baloney. The fact is, no one knows enough about what's going on in tanks biologically, and an awful lot of hobbyists can't reason scientifically because they lack enough scientific education. Among those who have the education, there's also the desire to DO the hobby in the first place, which tends to produce optimism that doesn't leave enough room for skepticism (which leads to your #7 principle...) The practices we do have that work are based on science (eg. break surface tension to achieve gas exchange). We need more science, not more "I did X and then Y happened, so did 15 people I know, therefore X causes Y". Or "So and so has a great tank and does X, therefore, if you don't do X, you're gonna regret it".
So much Information. STill trying to find a set of lists-- fish, cleaners and Coral for a 30gal w 20g sump. different lists options. what goes with what. etc. multiple lists of fish and corals cleaners. i see top 10's but not full tank stock lists.
There is so much personal preference in this hobby that it's hard to give you a specific stock list. Your vision of your dream tank is probably different from the next reefer. If you post up your stock list ideas, we're always happy to review!
Sorry to hear that you're having issues with your Chili Bucks promo code. Make sure you're not trying to use it on brands like EcoTech, AquaIllumination, Neptune Systems, Kessil, or Red Sea (MAP Brands) and you should be good to go. If you're still having issues, shoot a message to our customer service team and we can help!
Stop devaluing this as being "not peer-reviewed science." Think about those words for a second. I would say this is science in the truest sense of the word - and WE are the peers reviewing your evidence and findings. Oxford says: /ˈsīəns/ noun: science the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.
Ryan and Matthew together at last! I'm not sure it gets better!
Thanks, we will do more :)
Not better than Ryan and Randy..
The best since Randy left. Good job Matt stepping up.
I like how this video is not about finding what product to use but what is more important is the practice you use.
Thanks, that will be the approach with 52 weeks as well. One week of science, biology, and why we do it. The following week the tools to achieve the goals.

Love Matthew great you had him on
Another mentee of Matthew here 🤜
Nice mixed reef community going strong 💪
🍻
That’s the real dream team that encompasses new and old reefers alike
This is gold. Pure GOLD.
Love this format! More Matthew and Ryan content please!!
Another one next week :)
It was fun to see you guys together! 👍

My two favorite together awesome..
Congrats for 15 years! Missing Randy, but seeing you two together was like a warm cup of hot chocolate. Hope this journey together continues.
Thanks, same time next week :)
I look to the 2 of you as some of my best mentors on this journey though this great hobby!!!
Congrats on 15 year! huge milestone.

Thanks for a great discussion. The pH discussion alone makes this video worth watching, not to mention all the rest of the great information!
An evolution waiting to happen.

This is reefing gold
Congratulations on the 15 years Ryan and you and Matthew make a great combo 👍
Thanks 👍
I found a mentor from my lfs.... He has experience owns a store sells coral ... Also a friend that has an awesome tank
CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!

Hey Ryan, can you use your influence with Neptune to have them create a widget for iOS devices so I can see parameters at a glance?
I killed a lot coral before I finally got it right. About 5 years of messing up was a learning experience.
It's just a real part of the journey. One of the many reasons why aquacultured / farmed coral is a way better recommendation for us all in the first few years.
Man, the yanks have it easy in that you can get emerald crabs! Cant get them here :(

Thanks you just shamed me into doing a water change 😅
Haha, we understand... Sorry!... but not really! ;-)
@@BRStv while I have you here.. 🙄 .. do you think 5 gal weekly on a 20 gallon is too much?
Spooky 👻 🎃
I get it, you meant when Wife allows!
I need help getting my pH above 7.8 can someone point me in the right direction??
Been here since BRS was just starting out...what an amazing success story....bc of your dedication to education 👏 👍
thanks :)
Lookin' skinny Ryan. Haven't been watching since Randy left. You feeling okay?
been biking this summer, winter is here though :)
@BRS why do you send out “Mr Chili Bucks” that don’t work?
Can’t be used on any MAP items. Make sure it’s not a map item
