- From Elite XC to Bodog Fighting Championship, MMA’s seen a number of promotions come and go at an alarming rate, but the failure of Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions may be the most disastrous.
Today we look at De La Hoya’s short lived foray in the sport. A story of how ego and a high-profile feud led to one of the worst fights in MMA history.

Tito acting like he beat a prime liddell. It was just gross to watch them set up Chuck to lose to someone who wasn't ever on his level. Tito staying active fighting a 10 year retired liddell isn't right and the commission shouldn't have let it happen

Oscar thought Chuck/Tito was a rivalry with millions of fans pulling for either fighter instead of millions paying to watch Chuck smash Tito. Tito is popular only as a punching bag. If anyone thought Tito could have won the 2 earlier fights they wouldve sold the same as this one. He was too stupid to understand noone wanted to see it, ( 38,000 total did, giving away many of those tickets and practically the PPV. Literally had to pay fans in tickets to show up to watch Tito win) and you buried you're promotion with the kiss of death that is Tito. Wanting to insure not only failure but disgust Oscar brings our heroes out to be beaten and humiliated by about the most unpopular fighter he could find. He's the promoter who not only would have promoted the last Ali fight but scoured the earth for the most hated opponent to beat Ali senseless while he was at it. If Oscar wants to put on squash matches he is his own best asset. People would love to see Oscar get smashed in a return to the ring.

This is like the Heroes of Wrestling of MMA.
This one just lacked a few more 50 yr olds who were once popular in the 90s to be up there with Heroes of Wrestling.
But also, wasn't the Heroes of Wrestling guy actually a wholesome man who just wanted to make wrestling feel family friendly again?
Golden Boy was just pure greed, so in a way it's even worse.

What was dark about the BMF belt though?
@@d04lvallier The belt design is just awful, they should make the belt more like the WWE Undisputed Championship title belt (2002 - 2005) or like the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship title belt, the start of the fight was great but the ending was bad, why in the hell The Rock was promoting the fight and the belt? He's a pro wrestler not a MMA Fighter, they should bring legends of MMA like Ken Shamrock, Don Frye, Dan Severn and Randy Couture, Plus the NMF title belt (Stephen Thompson) got more attention than the BMF belt.
Gary Goodridge would be a good subject too. Promoters were definitely exploiting him far past expiration date and that lead to CTE.

That fight should never had been sanctioned given all the circumstances around that fight. Liddell honestly looked like a pensioner trying to re-live his glory years. It was sad.

Dana white learned from WWE you have to build a strong brand and not just promote big fights no one will ever take over the UFC because they have the most money now and the best business plan
The UFC had to rely on gimmickry to reach that stage though. Zuffa's first successful show relied on bringing back a past-his-prime Shamrock to face Tito in a grudge match.
It's Not Cagefighting I think the worst thing u can do when u first start an MMA promotion is spend a bunch of money on older former UFC guys to fight cause it just sends the wrong message you should give younger guys opportunities and save money while slowly building ur brand

This is what happens when promoters care more about money than the sport they're supposed to be promoting.

The idea of golden boy promotions going into MMA sounds like a joke to begin with.
For me the most embarrassing thing about this event was tito.
Tito should be most embarrassed about this, above all the infinite embarrassing things he’s done... Chuck demolished you when it actually mattered and where you could tell who was the better fighter

I hate to say it but I took advantage of the situation and bet Tito Ortiz by KO/TKO. I had seen chuck in other interviews even before the golden boy thing and he had trouble putting together sentences then and then the training footage came out and I knew he had zero chance. I couldn’t believe the fight got sanctioned to begin with. I did think he was partially faking the footage, but I knew if he was faking it wasn’t that far off.

Long story. At UFC 241 Nate Diaz challenged Jorge Masvidal to a fight to crown the sports "Baddest Motherf*cker" (or BMF). The UFC ran with the idea and created a BMF belt for the two to fight over. At the same time, The Rock was in negotiations with the UFC to develop a film about former fighter Mark Kerr, and the company allowed him to present Masvidal with the belt after he beat Nate at UFC 244.
