How to: Fit a EGR Blanking Plate on a Diesel Engine

  • Welcome to this video, In this video I Install a EGR Blanking Plate on the Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTI Engine.
    This will bring on the Engine Management Light if you do not have a 10mm hole. The hole allows enough gas through to keep the light off and slow down the build up. You could have the EGR remapped out of the ECU and then you could fully block the Valve.

    Hi Bluudy.
    Just fitted the EGR blanking plate (fully blanked). 10min job it was.
    I took it for a 30 mile test derive and no EML light on (don't know why coz I was expecting it)
    I have to say that it was easier to clean the carbon build up whilst dry with a small wire brush and then I sprayed some brake and clutch cleaner and gave it a good scrub. While I was there I also cleaned the boost sensor.
    A big thank you for the tutorials, as without them I wouldn't have had the courage to do the job

    Thank you so much. You have no idea how much you've helped me. My EGR cooler failed on my Astra 1.9cdti and I didn't know how I was going to get it fixed due to parts being super expensive here. I decided today that I would buy a plate kit.. remove the cooler and and fit both plates.. But even that was a worry for me because I know other parts have to be removed to do that.. This is the same result but much cheaper and easier. I'd also like to say thanks for mentioning the plates with holes in them because I was wondering about and I was going to fit the plate without holes but now that you've explained all that I'll go with the plate that has holes In it. Finally my brain can rest after weeks of stress. You're a legend!

    I had a faulty EGR valve on my 2001 Astra (Z16XE petrol engine). I replaced it with a brand new Delphi one sourced for a reasonable price and it has been fine ever since.

    I have a 'master' blanking plate as used by the AA (Automobile Association...not the ones for alcohol dependents! ) It fits virtually every vehicle. Whenever I blank off EGR's I just draw round the 'master' template onto a tin can lid ( or similar), snip out the shape, drill out the mounting holes and job done. Free, fast and foolproof!

    Sorry for the delay on getting back to you. the plate is a preventative measure to help slow down/stop the effects of carbon build up. it cannot get you power back your missing, because perhaps some damage is done. perhaps theres some blockage on the inlet manifold or on the swirl flaps.

  • @bluudysgarage
    @bluudysgarage  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    You have a keen eye. The Allen bolts are because the threads were damaged by the previous owner after removing and refitting the EGR valve - when i removed the valve for myself, the bolts wasn't very tight, so we experimented with a tap and die set, and managed to add a few threads. but the Allen bolts held better - but wasn't long enough for the engine cover lug.

    Personally I prefer using the blank directly on the manifold, I've blown that pipe out completely before, bluddy might be worth doing a swirlflaps tutorial also as a part 2🤙

  • @bluudysgarage
    @bluudysgarage  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Packs of 2 is for one each end of the pipe. But theroretically you only need to block one side. You could clwar the light but most likely will come back on again.

    I am going to have a go at cleaning my egr valve on Saturday (first timer) but was wondering why the blanking plate is added and what does it do exactly....does it stop the egr valve clogging up again? are there any issues with doing it? Astra H 1.9 cdti 120 8v auto. cheers.

  • @Hiccup77

    I personally WOULD fit a plate with the hole in it, as re-map software can be expensive depending who you go to. If you can afford it blank it off, if not hole it. :) Another thing I did when i had to change my EGR was threadlock those 2 top bolts, i did them up nice and tight but they rattled loose and all you could smell in the car was nox and co2 hence the threadlock.

    I cleaned my LMM sensor on P307 2.0 hdi with alcohol and it finally broke. The result was that the Egr itself blocked and is still in the closed position. The result is better engine response, more power. Should I buy a new operational sensor LMM? I also noticed that the engine needs a lot more time to warm up to operating temperature.

  • @bluudysgarage

    In my case I blanked the egr like in this video but after 20000 miles I had a exhaust leak where the egr pipes comes off the exhaust manifold, Best way to block is on the exhaust manifold itself

    • @devmike
      @devmike 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think so too, it seems to me that blocking it on the way back into the engine is just going to clog the EGR with the unrecirculated smog. Gotta send it all through the DPF and out or block that too and just send it out like originally designed.

      Hi I have a Kia Sorento and it rough idles on cold start with a white/blue smoke but runs very smooth after about 10 minutes with no smoke whatsoever, everything I read pointed to the egr valve so I blanked it off to see if that was the problem as these erg valves seem to be a nightmare to remove but there has been no change in it's behavior, is there anything else you could recommend checking? It's a 2004 2.5 crdi 16v engine, any help would be much appreciated.

    I'll fit a plate if it's arrive tonight and hopefully be able to start and rev it enough to see the rods moving. Will they move even at low revs? I couldn't get it above 2000 before. Much appreciate your help/videos - I'll check out the website too. Keep up the good work!

    Hey there, the best place is eactly there, the only other place you could put the plate would be directly off the exhaust manifold, but im guessing it would become way to hot, and may do some damage, so its perfectly fine just there :)

    Hi, I was attempting to remove my EGR in order to clean it as im getting a loss of power issue. when 2 of the bolts snapped and left some of the thread in the hole.
    i see that you have the custom allen key bolts. did you have to drill out old bolts since it was damaged when you got the car? or would you just recommend blanking off the valve and forget about it? Thanks.

    Hi, im having EGR issues with my Astra 1.9 CDTI Sri 150 2007
    I know it needs cleaning and im thinking of fitting the blanking plate, but is there anything else you would need to do after fitting this plate like anything to do with the ECU? I've had the engine management light come up twice, came up once then disappeared and now it's back and im sure it's because of the EGR.

    Any news on this? I'm having the same trouble on the same car. It's gone from running bad with EML on to cutting out completely. Green Flag's diagnoistics kit suggested EGR valve so I've striped and cleaned it as well a bit round the inlet manifold, but to no avail. When taking it off for the 2nd time again I notice a lot of black wet slugde had appeared in the inlet manifold. Do you think it could the swirl rods? God I hope not. Hoping to fit a plate this wednesday.

    Hi there, that was a good and informative video thanks, I have just started to get a loss of upper power, and so have just had the EGR valve of and cleaned it up, but it is still giving me this lack of power.
    Now will this plate cure that ? and also, surely that if you are blocking of that hole, surely the pipe leading upto there will build up with soot and then you will have 1 long pipe full of it ?
    Just my thoughts before i go out and buy one.
    cheers

    I thought that this was a guaranteed MOT failure in the UK? Is it or it not? There is of course the option of removing it before MOT having ensured it still works unblanked. Nope. Blanking a broken or not working egr will do nothing. As the car knows its not working and will put your car in limp mode. Clean it see if that helps. If so. Then blank.

    Isn't having an egr blanking plate with a hole, the same as having a partially blocked egr valve? The hole is not fully open and it's not fully closed either..... not ideal? Won't the small hole eventually block up anyway? Don't egr systems usually block up over time?

    • @hippydude1
      @hippydude1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having the hole in the plate is pointless. No point putting the plate on . That plate is to stop exhaust fumes going back into the engine. I think you are on about the egr flap .. you can take the vacuum pipe off the egr valve to stop it moving . So its always open . Ive always done a proper job and took that pipe off at the exhaust manifold and blanked it off with a gasket . Then do the same on the egr valve . If you know what i mean

  • @briandavis414
    @briandavis414 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yah, the only problem could think of when getting rid/or blocking of the EGR valve would be that you would have to remap he injectors. How wonder how much it would cost to have it done? For the most part, it would just be hooking up a computer, and making some easy changes.

    • @jayh4822
      @jayh4822 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you need to remap the injectors you are simply reducing recirculated exhaust gases.

    • @briandavis414
      @briandavis414 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Davus Well that recirculated exaust gasses is more air going into the engine. Some of it has to be pressurized...?
      .
      I simply thought that was the problem with some vehicles with a "plugged E.G.R." valve, and poor performance? On some vehicles you could just put plates over the EGR valve ports, and have no problems, but others end up with motors that are running a rich fuel/air mixture. I guess it depends on the size of the EGR valve, and how much air/exhaust gasses it is pushing through the intake (that air isn't read by the "Mass Airflow Sensor"... or the thingy that measure the amount of air going into the intake/engine. Sends it to a computer, and the computer decides how much gas is being pumped into the engine through the injectors!)!!
      .
      To be honest, they should completly do away with electronic fuel injected systems, and go back to a simple carb. Nothing will ever be as exact as a mechanical fuel delivery system...
      .
      They also need to start incorporating reed valve in the intake, so the gas becomes more atomized. As well as a higher intake ports, or longer intake ports in order so the gas becomes more atomized (incorporate that with a carb setup)!
      .
      I was just looking for a... FOUND IT! This vid shows a old engine used in faming back in the day. It's got a "vaporizer carborator"! watch?v=FDHQa0zv4D4 Probably the reason 20 oil cars jumped the track and blew up (just yesterday they said it was only 6... everything changes, day to day... even the bible... WTF!?)....

      Hiya Brain, you are right in a way but the gas is still metered with the MAP ( manifold absolute pressure ) sensor on this particular engine It has both a MAF ( Mass airflow sensor ) and a MAP so it will be able to adjust the ratio of fuel to air acording to these readings. obviously other engines will vary.
      Never heard of reed valves being used in a 4 stroke engine, or a vaporizer carburetor I shall check it out.

      Dave Davus Sounds like a pain in the ass with a load of complications. If the car somehow isn't right you take it to a mechanic... a mechanic van already tell what is wrong with the engine by check coolant temp and spark plugs. Don't need no sensors to tell what was wrong with a engine back in the day, and piston engines haven't even changed at all... It's all about control... a big conspiracy by the government to control all and everything as more technology is being released, as well as more truth. All the BS with sensors and what-not is just complications that end up with often "A BAD SENSOR"! Simple mechanical gauges are still used in racing, for giving reliable feedback from your engine, and what/where the problem is, rather than a "check engine light"...
      .
      Thank for pointing out another dumb sensor that is unnecessary on an engine, connected to a unnecessary valve that pumps spent exaust/carbons back through a brand new engine.
      .
      Yah, I'd say the Gov has it's medaling minds in everything, but really is looking our for our best interest... MY ASS!~

      The EGR is going to put in hot exhaust fumes into your cylinders with low oxygen content that probably won't burn up anyways, instead, the fumes collect residual oil and more soot and then clump in your exhaust manifold, the recirculation method is faulty and ruins engine longevity.

      Yea, right, as if aluminum can could hold the 700-degree exhaust fumes, you need steel plate, aluminum can will melt and end up recirculated through your engine.

    Hi Mate. I fitted one of these today, and now my car won't start, just seems to turn over and over but will not fire. It's a 2006 Vectra C 1.9 CDTI (150) Any help would be great. Thanks.

      Absolute Modicts Hi, and thanks for the reply. It was starting ok before I fitted it, so would that still apply in this case? I fitted it as the thought of clogging my engine isn't nice lol

      Shouldnt normally cause this issue, possible there is a EML light on and a code stopping it from starting. i would take the plate off and try again

    I blanked mine 8 months ago after a catastrophic manifold block up..all had to be replaced...
    I left a 8mm hole as its supposed to stop the warning light coming on from completely blocking it...
    Now the EGR has re blocked & I removed & cleaned it but the manifold looks really bad & im still right down on power....also light is still on..
    EGR cleaning spray really helps the cleaning process I ordered a couple of cans & will be spraying that into the intake just beside the EGR every month...the only real cure is regular motorway use over 2000rpm...I live in London so my 1.9 Cdti astravan 150ps is stuffed full..
    Modern diesels are too complicated to hit emission targets so that combined with the current war on diesels means it's time to sell especially if your city baced...I like the vehicle but alas it must go....Diesel has had its time it's going to die...

    • @prendedaj22
      @prendedaj22 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So lets think it this way.You leave the EGR and the other thing that extremely "helps" keeping mother earth safe.And the car engine dies 'cause of the soot buildup in the engine,so you throw the car and buy a new one,then it happens again ,so you just keep buying cars and the car industry keeps producing them and while producing the factories produce more,co2,nox and who knows what not,then me Plating/blinding/ removing/deleting an EGR valve.I think plating an EGR kepps an engine more or less safe and people don't need to buy cars as often and the car industry doesn't have to produce so often and that is how we can keep helping mother earth.

      Makes sense, the EGR valve needs to be closed, but the hot exhaust should be blocked from going into the EGR and out of the EGR on both sides.

    • @opelduude
      @opelduude 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Russell Mogg It's not good for the environment that the diesel engines are restricted in several ways. It looks good on the paper. When you have to regenerate for example the dpf all the build up will be released into the air anyway.

    • @russellmogg8674
      @russellmogg8674 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +opelduude Why would you write something so stupid? Are you saying that using this blanking plate is good for the environment ?
      Restrictions are due to pollution control - trying to keep the earth clean. It looks good on paper because - it is!
      This EGR blank off prevents the complete combustion - thus, blocking the DPF even quicker.

    • @opelduude
      @opelduude 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Russell Mogg "Egr blank off prevents the complete combustion" Do you even know what an egr-valve does? It's like breating in your own farts over and over again. If you want to keep the earth clean i sugest you start with ship traffic and third world industry countries.
