Two Semi-Finalists from The Second Wars are in Heat G of The Third Wars, as Haardvark and Napalm look to hold off the competition to progress to the final 16.
Watching this again, it strikes me just how WELL the Steg team know their bot's strengths. Sure it has the lifting tail and many teams at this time would have wanted to demonstrate their 'weapon'... but the team knew that Steg's power wasn't in the tail but in its pushing power.
Still amazing that it looks as if certain bot-makers haven't tested out anything on their robot. No weapon testing against other materials, no drive testing on a surface similar to the arena, etc.
Steg-o-saw-us once again demonstrated, that good speed, manouvrability, good armour and pushing ability outgun any number of half-baked 'weapons'. (It takes a really devastating weapon like Hypno-disc's rotor or Chaos 2's flipper to outweigh that).
I have to say that Napalm must have been well designed internally to have kept going after being repeatedly crushed. The movement issues seemed to be entirely a result of the shattered body getting stuck under the wheels. It still looks like shit and is too slow to do anything, but it's weirdly reliable.
@@TetanusBooster It sucks that Hypno-Disc never got to win a world championship because of rough luck or mechanical failure. So many promising attempts at world championships just didn't work for them because of extreme bad luck.
Regarding Napalm: Luck? No, partial judgement more likely. That robot looks dingy as ... and has a quite ineffective back weapon dangling. Katerkiller was far more aggresive. Napalm did get a deserved victory over Robopig though. Maybe the judges wanted to promote more female roboteers, but they would have done better with a fair judgement, taking them seriously as contenders instead.
Early Robot wars: This robot is made from aluminum and wood, powered by wiper motors, and has "deadly" spikes. Later years: This robot has more power than your house and can inflict 100KJ+ of energy into other robots. I love watching and re-watching the evolution of this sport. Chaos 2 was ahead of its time, and big cheese was obviously onto something. But the best was watching the $30k robot (Morits) lose to a basic wedge built in a garage. And Napalm was so weak but lucky because it was heavy and was up against light opponents. Ah, the good old days...
Henry vs. Haardvark - I've thought this through very carefully. This is one of those times where the judges stick their tongues out at the rulebook. They're like: "Haardvark was the more aggressive and did more damage and it wasn't immobilised for 30 seconds. So what? Screw the rules and screw Haardvark! We're the judges so we're always right. Henry wins because we say so. Oh, and there's kids on his team too."
i wonder where david crosby goes to find all the bubblegum and tinfoil he made that 5000£ robot out of. and that weapon might as well be a friendly pat on the back.
Haardvark, channeling the spirit of S1-2 Dead Metal...unlucky. Probably wouldn't have been able to repair in time for its next battle, but probably should have won against Henry.
There were several boos this heat. Napalm and Henry's first win got boos. I mean, both times the judges were right in the win imo, but they certainly weren't popular decisions.
Real shame that Bulldog and Haardvark went out in round one, made the rest of the episode a bit of a procession, noone else could give Stegosawus a decent battle
Maybe they were called up as a reserve VERY last minute? So last minute that they didn't get to film an intro? I just checked the Robot Wars Wiki - that WAS the reason. They were called in to replace a team very close to filming so there was no time left to shoot them an intro. (I can believe it given that often during pit-based content there were often other fights taking place - a filming schedule's very frantic!)

Wished that anything on Napalm really changed besides the paintjob. They had a long time between series to redesign, and a lot of time to rebuild. Would have been nice to see a new robot, instead of the same beaten battered thing from series 1.

I would've loved to seen that pig torn apart by Razor, not many other robots in this series that had stabbing weapons powerful enough to even cut through plastic...
I think this and the following heat were the only ones from Series 3 that I recorded off the TV. (I recorded a few episodes from Series 2, 4, Extreme and Series 6 as well)
See, another example of the lineup being spoiled somewhat by the lack of seeds. Both Napalm and Haardvark were semi-finalists in series 2. "We'll be back!" Yes you will, Bulldog Breed, and you'll start doing pretty decently in the future. Like, reaching the semis in series 7 and only losing to bots like Hypno-Disc, Stinger and X-Terminator. Oh, and winning the Extreme 2 Tag Team Terror with Robochicken of all things! Napalm's "mandibles" weren't really ferocious, let's be honest! They weren't even originally intended to be the weapon. Kater Killer would become Kat 3, the "girl power" robot later on, which I suppose makes its first fight being the main female representation in the series at that point kind of amusing in hindsight. Poor Haardvark! Henry couldn't really go anywhere without digging into the floor and was getting absolutely dominated, until Haardvark pulled a Razer! Steg wasn't even supposed to be in this, probably written off as just a cute little harmless thing. Turns out it's the best rammer in the game (at least until next series comes along and with it, Tornado). Wonder why they didn't mention it was a reserve? Oh and Robopig? Four wheels good, two wheels bad!
It's always really uncomfortable watching the Napalm team. David Crosby seems so aggressive and the girls always look terrified. I hope they're ok now and far away from that tosser.
Stego-saw-us was the first good robot on the episode. Everything else looked really slow and clunky and the weapons were trash. At least steg had the strength to push a robot around.
At least it didn't get through the heat final! I'll give its first battle a pass, as it looked to me as more aggressive and controlling during the battle, but that second battle was going far away towards Robopig. If it hadn't flipped over, Napalm would've lost to judges decision. Those mandibles on the back are some of the worst weapons I've ever seen! Barely bouncing off other robots!
