Thank you! I will definitely be increasing prices now that I feel my quality is worth the extra. If it wasn't for this channel and my affiliate sales, I would have gone up already.
Ok, I watched a few of these now, my eyes need a break.. I just hope that I love doing these when I do finally get started.. Been my dream since I was in my twenties and I’m now 52, so I need to get it started
If you would add a little dawn to your water it will help the epoxy not to stick to your hands and help you to smooth out your apoxy. I mount fish and this tip was passed on to me. Really helpful. Enjoyed your video and thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience with your subscribers.
My favorite channel. Once again Great Work! I tell people all the time that these mounts are going to be up on the wall. They are not meant to be stared at a foot away. This deer repair will look completely natural & unnoticable 5-15 feet away
I love your videos! I am an artist and sculptor of mainly wildlife, and I have been interested in taxidermy since I was a little kid. After watching your awesomely informative videos, I am going to mount my first deer very soon. As a sculptor, I would like to offer a couple of tips for rebuilding the broken antlers. I would use some 5 minute epoxy to "glue in" the wire armature into the base antler so it stays put for you. Then, after that is set and cured, wrap a small Guage wire around the thick armature wire...around and around, do it messily but tightly all the way to the tip and then back down to the base, criss crossing up and back and cut the thin wire off at the base and tuck the end in. This will give the apoxie sculpt something to adhere to and stop twisting around on the main wire. It will also keep the apoxie sculpt from sagging down while it is curing. I do this on the entire armature when creating a sculpture. It really helps, and I believe it will help you out a lot. Thank you for all of your hard work and sharing it all with us!
I have a 10 point dead head I found that I want to restore and mount upside down as a hunting gear rack that this will be a good reference for, thanks a million for the detailed video
I've used white apoxie sculpt & colored it with blood. Keep some in the freezer when you gut a deer. Walnut hulls work ok but blood is the best match I've found. Probably because the velvet is bloody. Rub on a little dirt to blend it in & it's all natural & really fast.
You sir are an artist if I hadn't seen the whole repair with my own eyes compliments of your video I would never have known that was broken absolutely amazing eye for color this is the 3rd or 4th video I've watched and I'm hooked your are one of the best taxidermist I've watched work that's beautiful art
I guess the antlers were broken before this Buck was shot weren’t they? Awesome job! Thanks for taking the time posting these. Have you ever had a matched set of shed antlers mounted on another head. Could you make a video of how you would do that? Thanks again!!
Hahaha! Thank you. I've been told that and I'm glad I can make people feel like they can accomplish a mount without the intimidation you get from some how to instructionals.
Yeah I could have edited it way better and still gotten the point across. It was back before I knew what I was doing trying to make a video (still learning) 😂
how about the brow tine repair cause they have groves and bumps thats what i would like to see done but i do like how you did the main beamand th claw very helpful.
What color apoxie sculpt is best for deer antlers?Do you mix any colors with it before mixing? How do you get the repaired antler to look good(not repaired)??
I paint the entire repair. I have used natural and brown apoxie sculpt, and prefer the brown. When I am modeling the antler, I work all the texture in with a modeling tool, and the brown creates more of a shadowed look than the natural did when I paint the highlights
Never understood why people like the antlers rebuild if they break off tines . I just like it to look like it when I shot it but that’s just me. Great job on doing it though
I’d like to shoulder mount sheds. You know of a good way to mount sheds to the head? Was thinking of using Clay and apoxie sculpt…would that last you think since nothing would be screwed to the form?
You can buy a fake skull plate from most taxidermy suppliers that has 2 posts that can be epoxied into drilled bases of sheds and then the cap can be used like the original 🤙
Start to finish this took 90 mins. And you’ve done it several times, so have probably picked up Speed through trial/error and experience. You have your base price mount- about what extra do you charge for a repair such as this ?
I have a set I shot this year needs repair. Would you contact me to see about shipping them to you? I like the video and like the work you did. I plan on European mounting it as well. Maybe have you do it all?
Why would you do it that way? I take a point from another antler and attach with wire (like you do). Then you only have to patch at the joint. I use Sculpall 2 part epoxy. It is off white. Easier to make it darker than to make it lighter in color.
That works great if you have extra antler laying around. Also, starting with a dark color leaves a darker look in the low spots of the rebuild and the high spots are easier to highlight

Yes they were. I've never done sheds, but I can do a vid of how to mount them. I'll write that one down for a future vid!
Excellent video! I love the finger painting. Never thought of that. Thank you so much for this class!!
Thank you for watching!
That was awesome! Very cool video thank you
Really good antler repair! ..would be good to see a video on the details of finishing the back of a pedestal mount if you could sometime. Thanks.
I just tuned into an episode of bob ross…. Joking but I love the content and you do amazing work!

I'm actually working on a vid showing that now. Probably be several weeks before I can get it done, but it will show everything

Do you put a base coat and then stain it or how do you do it?
@@stevechance4422 I use a light base coat to try and match the rack, then paint the low spots darker shades and the high spots light
Thanks so much for your replies . I've got 9 deadheads and two that are stuck together from fighting that I'm trying to restore.

I use fix it sculpt and it drys a bone white then I use minwax wood stain and just play with it till I get it matching good
Nice! I'll have to try that

Where are you finding the dark Apoxie sculpt putty? thanks
There is a link in the video description that will take you straight to it 👍

There is no repairing, what it has it has when you shoot, it’s what it is!!!! lol
Looks amazing tho!!!
It would be nice if we could see what your doing all we can see is the mixing tray.
Yeah for about 8 minutes of a 1 hour 28 minute video. Besides it's a nice mixing tray.
Awesome job like aways
Thank you!
Matte or satin, I’m attempting this myself. Thx
I use matte and then buff the paint lightly once it is fully cured. Satin would probably do well too though. Antler does have a little shine to it.
Next time superglue your wire into the antler first so it won't move around on you
well done sir :)
@text77 is this legit?
I’m think about having a taxidermy do that to my biggest buck should I
Yeah especially if you had a pic of him before he broke off
That does look really good what kind of paint you using
I use a combination of airbrush paint and acrylic
We’re are you located ? How much will it cost
I'm in Cullman Alabama. I usually charge 20 per tine and main beam prices vary
He was a 10 but he broke a tine and some of his beam
No shit
You couldn't use an antler stain for that
Possibly. I've never tried it with apoxie sculpt. I don't know that it is porous like bone.
