MetalJesusRocks that's what I had to do. I just got my first Original Xbox for Christmas and softmodded it right away (I live in Australia). I got some component cables for it but had to also purchase an adapter like this to hook the console up to my computer monitor. I can't believe I've been a PS2 guy for all this time! Another game that looks awesome is Dragons Lair.

MetalJesusRocks Yeah I remember having to use an app called VideoMode Switchdisc to set the Xbox to NTSC. Only then are the other display modes unlocked. Don't know of any other programs for doing this, although there probably are. This was in 2004, early EvoX days, when Kodi was still XBMP! Ahh, to be young again...

The xbox one's name is fine, I just use the xbox 720 name as I'd prefer to call the 2001 xbox "xbox one". If people are confused what I meant by xbox 720, I just say "Xbox one."

Ben Pulham Wow they must not be very knowledgeable about video games then. Xbox was last to be released in the 6th gen of gaming and was highest spec. Gamecube is also more powerful than PS2. Hell, multiplatform games on DC and PS2 sometimes even look better graphically on DC.

Oh man seeing those XBOX menus brought back some memories. I had the PS2 whereas my cousins had the XBOX so we would go over to each other's houses to play the exclusive games to those systems haha. Lots of good memories came streaming into my brain when I saw those menus haha 😃
Haha, the same happened to me, never had the xbox but many an evening spent at a good friends, playing Halo, combat evolved, timesplitters future perfect, tony hawks underground and grand theft auto vice city :)
I absolutely love both the Tony Hawk and GTA series but holy crap Timesplitters was an incredible shooter. I feel like it never got as popular as it should have; glad you brought that one up!

The original Xbox wasn't out long enough. 2001-2005 was too short. There was more potential, as this video has shown. The system was actually better than most of us experienced because hdtv's were expensive back then.
MJR you are freaking doing affiliate marketing perfectly I have so much respect for that.
So many youtubers are turning their content into full on commercials, filling up 1-2 minute blocks of straight advert burned into their content, and not doing true quality affiliate work.
This is the best way to do it and makes us viewers WANT TO buy stuff through your affiliation because you did such a great job presenting the product. I don't have an original Xbox but if I did I would totally pick this up just to support the effort you make into creating quality content every freaking time.

I’ve always loved the OG Xbox, but I just recently started collecting games for it. I had no idea about the component cables! I immediately ordered myself one, and it’s made a HUGE difference in my gaming. I can’t thank you enough for this!

The original Xbox was amazing. I was always a PlayStation guy until I went to the fair one year and they had a HUGE Xbox exhibit with a whole building full of Xbox console stations with different games to play. When I left I went straight to buy one. That thing was a beast for its time.
That really makes a difference! It's funny how a simple cable can change the quality so much. Making the cheap and simple upgrade to component on my PS2 drastically helped too.
I'm always glad to see you post about the Original Xbox. Such an underrated console. As much of a Halo fan as I am there is so much more to the console.

It's a Pixel THING this is literally just a Component to HDMI conversion in a cable. Only useful if you have a tv that is HDMI only
Yeah same here. My buddy ripped the RCA off off my Official xbox component cable and I had to buy the Monster version and a HDMI converter ranging about $60 in all. What the hell amazon I searched for such a thing. Well I guess I'll get this too.

You simply are the *BEST* video game and console channel in the world. I just got an XBox original for Amped 2. I used to have this console and game back when they were new. I played over composite (yellow, red and white) on a 27" CRT and it looked great (at that time).
Now on my big TV I notice blurry graphics. So I JUST ordered the POUND HDMi converter to allow 720p for this game. I am so pumped. And you showed me what I needed to see. The 480i gameplay vs the 720p. So now I am super happy with my purchase. Thank you bro 👍

This looks like a pretty good product. My gaming TV still has component inputs, and my capture device has a component adapter, so I wouldn't be gaining anything by picking this one up; Either for gaming or recording for our channel. That said, with HDMI only TVs becoming more and more of a standard, this product is going to be perfect for so many people. Thanks for the good review.

Bought it and I love it. The original Xbox was a real masterpiece of a system with a lot of space and plenty of graphical power that the system itself was ready to show from the start.

I just got this cable last month and works like a dream.
I just set up mine again yesterday and I'm going to create an arcade style cabinet for it. I'll likely have compartments underneath for all the gubbins etc. Great timing on the video.

Hoping I can get one of these in the UK. I have an OG Xbox that I soft-modded with a bigger hard drive. But I've fond that video output over component into a converter is VERY dark, and apparently this is a common, acknowledged issue with the Xbox.
Great video! I’m sure it took a lot of time to capture all that footage, but the comparison shots were worth it.
I like to record footage from Xbox over PS2 and Gamecube since the video output looks a lot cleaner for video editing. I should get this.
Also that matrix glitch in the corner happens to my copy too. They probably hoped TV Over scans will hide it

i think he ment the consle is only 60 dolars which it is i can get them at entertainmart for 55 bucks but screw that i can get ps3 and xbox 360 much better games only reason get reglar xbxo is for kotor and kotor 2 about it really lol and the baulders gate games and the gts 3 vice city and san andreas and 25 to life and fable and morrowind but other that xbox didnt have any games i liked had to many shooters

I love the original Xbox. It was definitely the best looking 6th generation console. I'm really glad you did this video. I have a component cable now and was considering HDMI. Seeing this video tells me there's really no reason to do that.
What's your setup? I've recently pluged my OG Xbox on my TV via the original RCA cable that came with it and an 1080p upscaler, but it looks a bit blurry. Nothing like the way it looks in this video. Do you think I need to upgrade the cable?
I have the PAL version and I've yet to do the softmod, so maybe I need to activate the hd modes, which otherwise is not possible with the stock PAL version.
Love the videos about connecting older hardware to hd televisions! 25 bucks is price worth considering, although my xbox has started showing some problems.
I have one of these actually and I was shocked how well it worked. I lament the loss of the toss-link but as far as a convenience to value factor? It's amazing that someone even put forward the effort and how well it turned out.

Is it me or do I want to buy all the harry potter games get the chamber of secrets since on pc you have to go through fancy shit that may force malware I feel like older games like this just keep a console handy since games are plug and play I fancy going back and getting desert storm titles again I just miss them grhaics don't matter memory's fucking do and going back is gonna be like wow compared to mordern games

I didn't go the HDMI route, but I did find brand new component cables on ebay. The results are amazing. The best $6 upgrade I could have made. Highly recommended to anyone who has a compatible TV. Same. Amazing game, and tried it with the cable. Its amazing. Even if its only 480i, this cable gives it a major improvement over the audio/video cables in terms of resolution. Enough to really enjoy the game again.

the gamecube adapter had issues cause the guy that made the 3d print out for the plug didn't realize the pins have to be insulated from each other lmfao
this was one guy making them though, theres half a dozen other companies that don't have this issue

Thanks for the great video! One of the big reasons for me having the original Component Cable(and select 3rd party ones) is the Digital Optical (TOSLINK) output. I was curious how surround is handled in the device, if they incorporate the surround from TOSLINK or just the normal Stereo out. Did you get a chance to test this out? Games like Jet Set Radio Future have some amazingly mixed music in surround mode.
I think you are right in that the Digital Optical port handled the surround sound. The regular AV out port, whether using composite, or component, could only do stereo. I'd assume this HDMI converter will still work if you use the Digital Optical port, as this HDMI converter is simply passing the native, component signal from the motherboard. The console itself thinks its component.
I'd like to see comparisons of this against the Xbox 360 upscaling them to 1080P via HDMI.
Zyrother I believe the normal stereo outputs could do Dolby pro logic style surround and that's about it. If it took the digital out, I'd buy one right now just for ease of use. I can compensate for the lighter picture with some settings.
This HDMI cable only gives stereo audio and thus is a downgrade from using the component video cable.
It only does stereo audio. They mention that themselves in the Amazon listing. It is a big limitation for those wanting the surround sound. For that you are only left with using a component to HDMI converter.

@@HeartlessTank ya man, the pound cable is literally one of the worst cables you can buy. the lag is intermittent. this cable has been extensively tested with lag test machines and this cable actually has different amounts of input lag at different times. so one second it will have 10ms of input lag, then then next second it will have 15ms of input lag. it fluctuates, imagine how hard that would be to get used to if you needed to time your jumps perfectly. any input lag with a cable is unacceptable especially when you can buy stuff without any input lag at all.

Hdmi adapter makes it slightly washed out to me and for the syberia it looks less vivid either. I don't see the point using this if you already have component input other than capturing video over hdmi.

Why would you stick to component? I'm curious as I just got a hold of Monster component cables for it after searching for months and was thinking of selling those (they are pricey online) to get this HD link cable.
I’m sticking with component because the tv I have it hooked up to only has 2 hdmi slots and I already have Switch and Xbox one hooked up on that tv

If you have a PAL Xbox (UK, Europe, Australia) 480p, 720p, and 1080i will not be available unless you mod your system.
But this cable works anyway on a PAL Xbox or not ?
personally I find it more convenient to play xbox games on the 360, cause it upscales to 1080p [sort of]
But It's handy for capturing footage like MJ said and also for games that aren't backwards compatible.
Ben Pulham The incomplete compatibility of 360 backwards compatibility made me get an original Xbox alongside with the glitches that would appear, as I always would get the emblem of a grunt while playing Halo 2 on a 360.
Really? When I played Morrowind on 360 it wasn't widescreen and looked washed out and 480p.
Ashwath Toontown a lot of games will still be in a 4:3 aspect ratio but the ones i played on my 360 definitely looked better than on my xbox

It makes it look slightly sharper and crisper but thats it.
I’m just upgrading my set up to convert my consoles to hdmi for a new tv, keep the videos coming please x) the OG Xbox gets no love, and I’m guilty of throwing it in the closet for a decade myself but when I pulled it out to and set up again I was surprised to find out how cheap the library of games is. There’s a ton of fun games to play and crazy to think back at how future proof this box was.

This HDMI cable doesn’t pass through optical audio from the Xbox, so you lose the 5.1 surround sound you can get from the Xbox by using the component video cable, which also has a Toslink port on it for optical audio. Personally, I find this HDMI cable to be a large downgrade from the component cable due to the loss of surround sound audio.
Connect the optical OUT on your TV to the optical IN on your amp. It works flawlessly with my Samsung smart tv and my Onkyo receiver.
My TV optical OUT is 5.1 compatible (DD and DTS)...PCM or Bitstream, it works.
Before buying an XBOX One X, I used to watch netflix in 4K on my TV, and enjoyed the 5.1 surround by connecting my TV on my receiver through the optical cable. It worked just fine.
I'm 100% sure you won't have any issues enjoying your OG Xbox games in 5.1 (as far your TV supports it).
I may have I missed the part on the video where MetalJesus mentioned that the 5.1 signal was converted to 2.0 :-/
Anyways, I'm ordering mine.
