6:59 This is a big deal that you just glossed over; this adapter can output the Dolby Digital 5.1 signal from the Xbox's S/PDIF output over HDMI, while other Xbox HDMI solution only output stereo audio converted from the Xbox's analog stereo audio output. The Xbox was the first console to have real time in-game Dolby Digital 5.1 audio (provided by Nvidia's Soundstorm hardware) and native HD 720p output before the Xbox 360 came along.

Yeah i bought the special cable to be able to connect optical cable for 5.1 surround, back in the day. Had a small tv screen but very good audio on my bed room. Great for gaming dvds and music too. Good times, Original Xbox was awesome.

The answer to the very question I had about having access to the _surround_ audio if I didn't have the original XBox component-video output adapter for the Toslink connection. _Thanks!_
... So the optical output on my PS2 only ever gave gaming surround audio in the ~cut-scenes , not in-game?

    • @LordRayken
      @LordRayken 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It can, but you have to add the "optional" toslink/optical audio port. Without that, you can't have 5.1.

(Edited 09.01.2022 because I made some typing mistakes)
Not necessarily. You could use the exploit of Splinter Cell (or any other game that has an exploit) to just run Enigmah-X to set your console to NTSC. This alone makes the console output NTSC and gives you access to all the higher resolutions. Note that it doesn't change the region of the console so while you can't play US games with that alone you can at least play PAL games in 480p which there are many of which that support 480p. But of course, once you go that far, you might as well install a softmod on it, install a custom Dashboard and so on.

Just made a few sets of my own component cables using some of the official Xbox 360 component cables I had lying around.
Chop the plug end off both cables, pull back the sheathing on the OG plug, solder wires from Xbox 360 component cable to OG Xbox plug appropriately, and re-apply sheathing. You now have a great, and cheap component cable for OG Xbox. You do have to jump 4 pins together in the plug in order to enable "component video mode". Picture is immaculate, and arguably better than using the official HD pack from the OG era.
Made 5 of these already, and they all work very nice. The X360 component cable had pretty good shielding, and that benefits the OG Xbox you plug it into.

Just bare in mind that for using component direct to the panel, you're likely to be at the mercy of what the tv does to lock in to a specific display process. In addition, you'll also have overscan to deal with.
If you can switch the input label to PC, you might be able to bypass the processing and hopefully remove the overscan. Otherwise I had success with the OSSC as input via HDMI does not suffer from any setting lock.

Two revisions of the Official Xbox Component cable exist. The one shown in the video with the breakout box, and the second resembling the more traditional cables that runs from a console to a TV.
Sometimes sellers incorrectly list the component cables as composite for low BIN prices, so it's worth spending a little time looking at images to find a good deal.
Personally, the Monster cables are the best. They're well made sturdy shielded cables that have stood up well. Only downside is their death grip. It can easily break or strip a RCA plug if you're not careful.

Hi, I have my original Xbox connented to my HDTV with the official Xbox HD pack. Not many new TVs have component inputs anymore. When I replace my TV should I look for one with component or use one of those cheap component to HDMI convertors? In this video you show an HDMI solution but it seems it's always sold out on the website. Thanks.

edit2: I found out that the 480p games that support 16:9 only output the same 720x480 480p image (with squeezed pixels to be stretched to 16:9) and NOT a 854x480 image as I thought it would be. (yes it's weird, NTSC standard is technically 720x480 and the TV scales it down to 640x480, so this does benefit conversion to 16:9 compared to a native 640x480 signal). This means that if you run one of these games and set your TV to stretch/wide (as you're supposed to achieve full 16:9), you LOSE resolution density. Yes, you gain some FOV but you also lose clarity compared to 480. You're basically playing equivalent to about 450p widescreen.
Why does the xbox setting need to be set to widescreen? If the game is outputting in 480p, normal mode from the xbox settings is fine right?
edit: Oh wow I had no idea there are games that support 480p @16:9 (854x480). I just bought a used Xbox and was planning on just playing the 480p games in letterbox. Great to know this.

Another way to get TECHNICALLY Official Microsoft OEM quality component cables for the OG Xbox really cheaply, (if you have the skills) is to find some commonly available Xbox 360 component cables and some official OG Xbox composite cables. (There are TH-cam videos that show how to do this, thats how i did it, and describe it better than I can so keep that in mind) And what you do is, to put it rather crudely, chop off the connectors on both cables, and solder up the correct wires from the 360 component cables to the correct pins on the Xbox connector. Using a pin schematic its very simple if you have the skills. You can even wire up the cable for composite video while youre there if you really want to and have a 2 in 1 cable. Just dont plug in both at the same time xD. Thats the cable ive been using for about 3 years since I've done it and it looks GREAT!

Slightly off-topic: Given that the mClassic is said to work best on GameCube-era consoles, how does the Chimeric adapter + mClassic look on the original Xbox as compared to, say, OSSC scaling? (Is there an mClassic combination that would result in a signal above 1080p?)

If you've got the official "HD Pack", just use a set of HD Retrovisions to connect it to the RT5x: retrorgb.link/hdrcomponent

@retrorbg, my 4k TV with component video input recently died, and the replacement only has HDMI. After all these years I am just now having to deal with my OG (Soft-modded with XBMC circa 2005 and last updated in 2007) XBox not being able to connect to the TV.
I purchased a converter, and immediately had problems. Looks great on boot, the XBMC menu has no issues. However all games, emulators, programs, even the OG XBox menu cut out constantly during play. Not while in menu (for instance Halo launches and works fine until you start a match) but as soon as gameplay starts I have problems.
I am ordering another cable, and now on the waitlist for the Chimeric cable, but does anyone know if I am looking at a problem with my cable or the XBox itself? I am using the original XBox component adapter and cable (the one with the TOS Link built-in), and a cheap powered Component HDMI converter from Amazon.
