iD3 owner for 2 years now. Real world range varies dramatically depending on the ambient temperature. Mine goes from just under 3 miles per kWh when it's cold (sub 5c), to just over 4 miles per kWh when it's warm (above 15c). That gives me a theoretical range of anywhere between 140 and 220 miles. Two things you have to factor in though, (1) Maximum battery capacity is not the same as 'useable capacity' (the car stops you using all of it, so my 58 kWh is more like 52 kWh) (2) It is recommended that you only charge to 80%, so that brings the range down further to between 120 and 180 miles.
58kWh is the useable capacity upon delivery. 62kWh is the gross capacity. Obviously these batteries degrade over time so if yours has a useable capacity of 52kWh now, that is down to degradation, not the difference between useable and max capacity. I've done 10 thousand km in mine and the useable capacity has gone from 58 to 55 kWh.
We have owned our id.3 now for about 12 months. Driven about 10 thousand miles mostly around town but we have been away in it about 3 times now. The range has been fantastic up until this very cold weather. The range has halved com paired to summer driving so plan ahead if your travelling during these cold months. We are so glad we chose the id.3. Its been very reliable and the quality is great. The perfect all rounder. Best feature on the car is the defrost option on the app. Defrost the glass and warm up the interior from the comfort of your home.
Hey Gary thanks so much for the comment🤗 these are exactly the comments we love as others who are interested in the ID3 can see real world owners experiences. Sounds like you are very much enjoying the car. We have noticed that like you said electric cars sufferer from range etc. I bet the defrost option from the app is perfect for the weather at the moment (December 2022) thanks for chatting with us 👍🏽
I would say if you get half the range during winter months how can the quality be good? This is a major drawback. So if you get 250 mile range in reality when it’s colder you provably get 150.
Awsome thanks for the comment! This is perfect to add to the data for this video. A great resource for others looking to buy or lease the ID3. Cheers Matthew for chatting with us 🤗
I have a life pro performance, currently my long term efficiency is 4.8 M/KWh that does drop in winter. I have seen 260+ miles for 100% charge with over 110 miles left after a 165 mile journey on motorways and A roads. I can get over 5 M/KWh on my home-work-home drive (about 40 miles town and countryside driving). The best charging rate has been over 100KW but this dropped quickly as the state of charge increased. I might be an outlier here but I like the haptic buttons on the steering wheel and console, and would be sad to see them go.
Hey thanks for the comment. Really appreciate you sharing your experience with the car and the miles you are getting. It’s always interesting to see what real life owners get, and this will definitely help potential buyers who are looking to see what is achievable. Thank for chatting to us 🤗
The facelift of this model is going to have a vastly, improved infotainment screen and much better material quality, given how the head of product development was let go very soon after the ID3 was launched, and how Volkswagen now have a new CEO, many heads rolled when this car came out. It’s not as good as it could have been.
When quoting battery capacities, please get your units right : 58 kWh (kilowatt hours), a unit of ENERGY. When you quote the electric motor output, use Horsepower PS (204). 201 B.H.P. is a very old unit. It's like mixing up inches and metres.
BHP brake horse power is used to define the power produced at the output ie wheels. On motors it would be shaft horse power 1 h.p is equivalent to 746W. Horse power is an imperial unit if you are going to quote battery energy in kWh then stick to SI units ie Watts or kW.
I have a 2023 id3 and it’s the biggest load of crap I have ever owned. Yeah the drive is ok and pretty good around town. Now the bad stuff. Since I’ve had it it, warning lights have been coming on intermittently, every 2 weeks or so, the warning light meaning stop the car, take to of to workshop, risk of fire is one of the lights. My local VW dealer has had the car for weeks at a time and can’t recreate the problem. This is despite numerous dated photographs of the display with warning lights on. Additionally when the warning lights come on I lose a lot of functionality including not being able to put the car in neutral, or reverse. The only way to stop it is 2 switch if for several minutes and then back on. Great when you are stuck at the side of the M62. Don’t by one they are rubbish and I’m stuck with it
Depends how you drive the car and the roads you use. In Summer 4 miles per kwh is achievable but not on motorway (3.6 ish at 60 mph). Real range is 230 to 240 miles maximum with the 58 kwh usable battery. Switching air con off will increase range in summer and in winter makes a massive difference but you can't run the fans without air con or heating on. In winter always pre-heat the car via the app when its plugged in charging.
Ha Ah thank you Jonathan, sometimes we only have 20 mins with the car so we can only get one passing shot or not even that. So we rinse and repeat and use what we can lol. Thanks for the comment 🤗
Thanks for the comment and sharing. Very interesting to hear that. How long have you had the car for? What size battery did you go for? Thanks for chatting with us 🤗

I love the ID3. Leased one now for a year through ONTO. I drive mainly motorway every day and it hasn't put a foot wrong yet. I average around 220 real world miles in summer and about 170 real world miles in winter. Both at %100 battery level. I will however be taking delivery of the new MG4 trophy all electric in March so hopefully it's every bit as good.
Thanks for the comment Christopher. 🤗 These type of comments really are my favourite as it gives people an insight into real world examples. That’s really interesting at winter time you get about 170 it just shows how the cold effects it here in the UK but still plenty enough. The new MG4 looks brilliant especially the front. MG have really stepped up their design game with this car. We can’t wait to have a test drive in one of those. Really appreciate you chatting with us. Thanks 🤗
@Car Chat TV I love watching these videos. You are absolutely 💯 correct, a lot of people I speak to are still terrified of switching to electric, thinking you can't use headlights, wipers etc as it would significantly use range of the battery, that's simply not the case as all of these systems run from the cars 12v battery as would a petrol car. Sorry to ramble lol. Thanks for the reply
Very misleading title on this video. I have seen a MASSIVE amount of yt videoes about the ID.3, just bought a 3 year old one for 2 weeks ago. And there is nothing in this video that other people haven't been saying for the last 2 years about the ID.3 .. 2 years from the date of this video.
No I haven’t driven it at night! Are you an owner? Is it bad? I’m hoping to try the revised version as some of the touch screens and materials have been updated as lots of people were saying the same things. Thanks for chatting and sharing 🤗

"I'm going to be totally honest with you" which means you will not...vw gave you some points that you "must" cover or they will stop giving you vehicles to test...."review samples"....I'll speak with an actual owner thanks.
Just tried the new facelift version yesterday and that was good too. I’d rather have a Cupra born tho. What would you rather have? Thanks for the comment and chatting with us 🤗
@@CarChatTV in all fairness, I cannot trust any review from people who are sent vehicles...not really a fault of your own...you cannot afford to go out and buy every car you review..I get it. VW has a nasty habit in pushing products onto the market, which have not been fully tested/developed yet. Just wait a couple of years and then the EV's from VW will hopefully give less trouble... (and have a lower salesprice!).
I’ve been driving one of these for some time now. Awful quality. It’s plainly obvious that VW have cut corners and rushed this through. Some of the functions and controls have been changed when there really was no need! Annoying car on many levels. Range is terrible. Never managed anywhere near the claimed mileage from 100%! And no one ever talks about how the vehicle restricts performance once you drop below 20% and then again at about 10%. The fact it’s electric is fine. Great performance, but to live with, this is awful and not worthy of the VW badge!
To be 100% honest I am disappointed that you have trotted out the exact same mindless criticism of the touch controls. Firstly, do you think everything being controlled through a series of menus on a touch screen is better? Really? Secondly, you can slide the heat and volume controls left to right / right to left, not simply touch. Thirdly, it takes a very short time to learn the controls of any vehicle. Having watched so many reviews of cars and then tried a few of those cars I am disappointed that reviewers obsess about small "preferences", big up certain brands regardless and live in world of their own self importance Nothing is perfect for everybody but equally the ID.3 doesn't merit the pathetic repetitive and unoriginal criticism it gets from lazy, low rent TH-cam hacks.

VW needs to introduce this to US. Their product line in the US is way too big .
