    It's crazy how certain performances were scrubbed in the early days of television. You'd have thought someone would've twigged and not scrubbed this...maybe it might turn up as a full performance somewhere, maybe somebody did keep a reel of film footage of this...ready to re-discover at some point in time. Mad to think that the Beatles performance got scrubbed but a clip saved on Doctor Who which in itself I think some early episodes themselves were erased from history...crazy isn't it?.

    I like how she said "I didn't know they played classical music", as a reference to the fact that their style changed so much throughout their career. I felt similarly shocked to learn the Beatles covered Twist &Shout

    Ticket to Ride had been knocked off number 1 by the time this episode was broadcast, but the performance had initially been shown on TOTP a month earlier. We are actually very lucky to have only 97 of the 253 black-and-white episodes of Classic Who missing, as vanishingly little of 60s TOTP survives, and episodes are missing all the way up to 1977. I don’t think the Fabs were actually in the studio for that performance, it was a pre-record inserted into the show. The only time they did turn up in the studio was for Paperback Writer and Rain in 1966, but of course those performances are long since wiped.

    • @TheShallowProclamation
      @TheShallowProclamation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s such a shame so many of those performances were wiped. Little bits of history just gone.

    • @johng5859
      @johng5859 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheShallowProclamation Yes, it is very frustrating. Those running the BBC back then simply could not foresee the lasting value of the programmes they were making - shows like TOTP and Who were regarded as ephemeral and disposable.

    Here in Australia Doctor Who was repeated on the ABC in late 2003 and showed this episode and the Beatles scene wasn't cut out at all so i don't understand why they cut it out of the episode in other places if it's a rights issue.
    But either way it's a great scene and i hope it's included on the season 2 collection set blu-ray.

    • @johnlarro6872
      @johnlarro6872 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure the clip was edited out for the Aussie VHS release... but could be wrong. Have the tape somewhere... and a VCR somewhere too... but getting the 2 together - not an easy job. :)

    • @billthewhovian
      @billthewhovian 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I remember it being on ABC. It's strange that Britbox has cut it. Could be a rights issue, perhaps those who own the rights of the clip, I'm guessing Paul and Ringo didn't give Britbox the rights to show it though I don't think they'll have an issue with it if it is Paul and Ringo who have the rights and if it's a Top of the Pops rights issue I don't see why as the BBC would be the rights holder to that.

    Something about the fact that The Beatles have just the one memorial theatre, sort of implies they all died at the same time.
    Although now I'm imagining a counterpoint to this where Vicki says something along the lines of "Isn't it sad Lennon and Harrison died so young," Ian and Barbara look confused, and The Doctor hurridly forces them to switch topic.

    This scene was included in "The Chase" when it was released on VHS in the 90's. It was a 2-tape combo set, which also included "Remembrance of the Daleks", the Seventh Doctor's story.

    This might be the first time that the Beatles were seen wearing these beige colored suits. They would wear them again at their first Shea Stadium concert. Some of the artwork on the American lunchbox that came out later year seems to be based on this performance.

    Fun Fact! At 1:57 you can see a frame of the preformance! So not only can you find the Beatles preforming part of the song, but you can also see a frame! Also you can see and hear footage from BEFORE the preformance too! It's just Vicki talking and being in front of the Time Space Visualiser makes it harder to hear and see.

    I wanted to share -just received the R1 American set of “Series 2” on Blu. I cued The Chase, fast-forward,…and, damn they did edit. They must not have been able to pay the fee, or get a rights-agree.
    Viki puts in the card, Barbara asks the year “1965” -screen goes to static as the Doctor declares they are landing.
    We, on this side of the Atlantic always wait months for some Who media. And, they had to edit! I still have my R2 Dvd, which I can watch on my older desk Mac. And, there is a plethora of Hartnell to enjoy with this set. Amazing visual quality of these 60 year old episodes. No Beatles clip.

    This was included in the British- regions vis tape, and the American vis (which I had). When the Dvd came out, the American, or maybe overseas regions had the Beatles clip edited out, much like you experienced on your online review. This may be a concern, with the upcoming Blu-ray Season 2 Box - will the Beatles be included or edited out??
    (Oh, during the PBS transmissions, over here in the States of the then surviving Hartnell/Troughton stories, The Beatles were included. 1985. Before all the rights overview-?)

      I do believe they did this only because the footage would otherwise be removed - by talking over and reacting to it, they can force it to be counted as "fair use". If they didn't speak, the footage would be copyright struck.
