Most sane doctor who story
Director: You idiot! I wanted a look that symbolised the ticking of time! Costume Designer: Sorry, I thought you said "the _chicken_ of time"
Kronos is extremely naff, but his look is in keeping with the general feel of the story. What I really dislike about The Time Monster is the sense of smugness it gives off, as if everyone involved was thinking “the show is a success again, so we can kick back here and enjoy ourselves” seemingly forgetting that the priority is to entertain the viewers. The Doctor’s lash up is a great example of how the story insults the intelligence - Letts and Sloman don’t even try to make it vaguely credible, hoping instead that it will go down with the help of lashings of whimsy. Trouble is, I find it indigestible…
Somebody in I think the classic Dr Who episode guide referred to Kronos as a giant budgerigar 😂. i think the time flow analogue appealed to me as a kid; but it comes across as tosh now, the tea leaves in the cup taking it over the edge of credibility, even within the fantasy world of Dr Who - but it’s fun; and a snapshot of the 1970s every bit as redolent of the era as glam rock. 🙂
How many times in these reaction videos had Thomas asked, "Paul, what is going on?"
Delgado was never less than amazing. The chicken outfit, good given the time. Mmmm, chicken legs 🍗 🤤 😋 loved your commentary about the chickens especially! 👍 😂 The forks in a cork was derided for decades. Plus, "forks in a cork" sounds like a cool sonf lyric 😁 I do like the Master moving roundheads and others into the future. How much more advanced was he compared to the War Chief, assuming they're from the same contemporary time period?
The Kronos outfit isn't that great, but I love the way they put CSO colors over it to make it look iridescent. I suspect that's why the suit is white. Speaking of Delgado keeping his delivery under control, this story contains both the best performance by him as the Master and the worst IMO. His best is in the next episode and his worst is in the final episode.
The idea of that bird "eating" the man terrified me as a small boy.
I prefer the film over the original Daleks Invasion of Earth.
The actor probably is in his 80s now if he's still around. I wonder how close he looks to the makeup job in the episode?
Sadly, Ian Collier died in 2008 at the age of 65.
He did however play a major role in "Arc of Infinity" in 1983.
@@MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio that's sad, it seems like actors on sci-fi shows have short life spans for some reason. I looked up the cast off Babylon 5 recently and I think that show must have been cursed
Season 9 Review Questions: 1. Rate this seasons stories. (mine are Curse of Peladon / Sea Devils / The Mutants / Day of the Daleks / The Time Monster) 2. After seasons 7 and 8 being UNIT heavy, how do you feel about their use being cut back this season? Notably The Sea Devils (modern day Earth based) featured the Navy and not our favoured friends. 3. As a pair of Fashionistas, what are your thoughts on Hip-Chick Jo's attire this season? 4. Both trips into space (Curse of Peladon and The Mutants) were clear attempts to say something about the current political situations about joining the EEC (later the EU) and South African Independence. Do you prefer this approach rather than the modern era approach of taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut, and then spends 15 minutes telling people you took a sledgehammer to a nut? 5. In the Curse of Peladon we learn that Jo is "all dolled up for a night with Mike Yates" - she's surely more suited to Benton. Discuss! Hopefully I'll be able to make this review live, but if not hopefully I've have had some input.
I think that Barry Letts / Robert Sloman were hoping to replicate the success of The Daemons with all the elements that made it work, such as Letts’ writing and direction bringing out the best in ‘the UNIT family’ and creating an epic story in addition to his producing the show. It’s not as successful an attempt; there’s less sense of scale in the story and as a kid of 9 at the time of broadcast, apart from a couple of moments in it, I largely forgot this adventure as I did The Mutants.
Prosthetics that ‘age’ the performer were very difficult to do back then - I Claudius, four years on from this, posed problems for the actors in creating prosthetics that were durable under hot tv lights in studios and also tolerable to wear. For Dr Who this also applied to alien prosthetics. The 1970s saw with beings such as the Ogrons the work of John Friedlander come to the fore, with his use of full or half masks that, with makeup added around eyes, mouth or chin to complement the latex prosthetic, allowed for more expression to come through, some more successfully than others. This was good for the actors in giving expression to their performances and to actors like Jon Pertwee in reacting to them - the downside being that it meant/means the aliens are facially more humanoid sometimes as well as in form - and there is less of the attempt to create the variety of beings in for example Season 5. However, at that that time it was partly to try to replace the Daleks, who were then being written out of the show in Terry Nation’s attempt to launch them in America.

Love how by each ep Paul becomes more homeless and Thomas becomes more gargoyle-esque
Ooo arrrrr? Oo arrrrr?😂
This is a lovers of The Chase supporter group
Things do get slightly more serious here, but the dialogue is still terrible and the Brig, in particular, is written to come over as more of a buffoon than he ever was before. However, I agree that the ageing of Stu is rather disturbing, and the make up is good. Perhaps Ruth isn’t that upset because even she was finding him annoying? I have a couple of questions for the Season 9 review - have you liked the move away this season from almost exclusively Earthbound stories, and have you missed UNIT in the stories where they have not been involved?
I'm glad you guys are enjoying this one. It gets so much hate from the fandom.
"Sped-up", Doctor... "SPED-up."
The shouty old Professor was about to tell The Master to 'READ THEM AND UNDERSTAND THEM!😅
Timey Wimey Tommity Titty ? I'm so sorry, I'm old enough to know better
Granted after Ruth's bit about Men , when Stu turns round and says 'Let's Do It!' , for a hot second, it does seem like he's suggesting an unusual Mea Culpa on behalf of his Gender......but personally, I think Yates is more his type 😉
I think watched in the right spirit , this is a lot of fun, and I think you both seem already there ! Though there some very cool ideas in it, to be fair. Perhaps this is The Chase of the Pertwee era?..
You might be onto something there!
The doctor really love saying Jo's full name and Miss Grant for no reason
It’s so bizarre that it stands out like a sore thumb.
Does anyone know what the music was at 6:26 ?
Season Nine Review Question: Who had the best experience between Stu and Ruth (Time Monster Ep1) or Barbara (Keys of Marinus Ep2)? Remember that Barbara "had it off all night".
I just realised something! back with the thirteenth doctor, she met another "Doctor" could it be that this Bi-Generation caused that specific encounter?
1:11 ... what IS a "fine tooth-comb" anyway? Who the hell combs their teeth?
I love this serial if you don't take it too seriously and don't overthink it it's actually quite an enjoyable entertaining story. This is one of the examples Pertwees one of my old time favourite Doctors.
This time it was Paul who lost his shit! Normally it’s Thomas!
This story is such fun and I adore Ruth and Stuart who wills work well with a UNIT regular. Maybe the story should have been called Carry on Time Monster.
Paul is definitely a glutton for punishment - I can’t stand this story for the most part, as it majors on weak humour, dreadful dialogue and some decidedly overripe performances. I guess there is a “so bad it’s good” vibe if you are in the right mood, but for me it is mostly just bad. The dream sequence at the start sets the tone, but things really get cringe when the dreadful Ruth and Stu hove into view, while the Master’s dodgy Greek accent doesn’t help either. Although Robert Sloman is the credited writer, he actually co-wrote it with Barry Letts, resuming the partnership that had begun on The Daemons. This time Letts insisted on Sloman having the sole credit, rather than the pair of them hiding behind a pseudonym, as Letts couldn’t be credited himself because he was the show’s producer. If I were Sloman I would have rather left my name off this cack-handed script. Letts was a great producer overall, but I really don’t know what he was thinking here…
The actor with the rather baroque speech mannerisms in this same year played Lord Peter Wimsey’s solicitor Mr Merbles (Murbles?) in the mystery Clouds Of Witness, which also had ‘Uncle’ Noel Coleman (General Smyth in The War Games), Anthony Jacobs (Doc Holiday in The GunFighters), Graham Leamann (The Macra Terror etc) and quite a few other actors who have appeared or will appear in Dr Who. 🙂
This story was co-written by producer Barry Letts; he and Robert Sloman were "Guy Leopold" for "The Daemons". For this episode and the next three, Roger Delgado's hairpiece seems to have been stuck on further down his forehead than usual. As a result, a bit of the bald patch on the crown of his head can be glimpsed occasionally. It's glued on back in its regular position for the last two episodes.
At least the 'We've Done It!' song was better than 'There's Always a Twist at the End.'
That’s not hard
Doctor Who is a very sexy show.
Yes, it's always been 'sexy'. Rogue wasn't such a horrible departure from the norm at all...
@@anthonygreen7063 It certainly did go 'rogue', that's for sure 🤣 Yeah, This and Rogue...It's almost like it's the same show 👀
Anyone who looks at a piled plate of haggis in order to get advice from... I rather like this story, but it's got its share of (eh, mostly fun) problems 😂 Great cliffhanger too
All my life I thought that Ruth & Stuart were brother and sister because Stuart kept calling Ruth Sis.
Also, I'm always surprised when people don't pick up on the queer-coding of Stuart. I mean, it's not even that subtle for the era.
Double meaning. She's making an exception to him, even if other dialogue can be perceived another way. The more the merrier!
Tom's tit is rhyming slang...
Doctor Who and the Dancing Scientists!
I've always liked this one despite its reputation. I still say the problem is the tone rather than anything about plot or production values. It has a tone pretty much unlike any other Pertwee, very light, fluffy, and juvenile, even in serious moments. If it had the same overall tone as The Daemons, I imagine people would like it a lot more.
And a turn from a certain ultra Glam Horror/Cult film Star , who was married for a bit to a certain Comedy Entertainter turned Actor .......
Can’t wait for the flow analogue inducer.
There’s probably quite a good story buried deep in The Time Monster, unfortunately it’s all played like a drunken am-dram production.
End of season - monies running out! Schoolboy humour overloading!
Pertwee's finest
As this was multi-camera studio recording with no post-production effects at this time, all effects ‘in-camera’ or on whatever could be achieved via the studio gallery vision mixer working with the director, I believe five if not six of the huge studio cameras were to achieve the effect of Ky in his ‘super-being’ form and his destruction of the Marshal. It is very stagey now - and it’s easy to decry the melodramatic Ky, the bombastic performance of Paul Whitsun-Jones as the Marshal in his Goering-esque strutting and Rick James, struggling with ‘Cockney’ lines (and please bear in mind that at this time Afro-Caribbean and Asian actors got few opportunities or decent roles, never mind anywhere near enough TV experience, encouragement or recognition, often lumbered with playing caricature tropes - there were exceptions but they were mostly marginalised) - but I do think it is more appreciated on re-watching - and I have admiration for them all.
4:53 talk about flying high... The "d ie Marshall" line is so hokey, even for 1972 standards. I wonder if they were rushing to get done by 10PM as the motion camerawork for the effect was probably one of the more complex for the time. The rainbow whee was common Top of the Pops fun stuff, but the motion and lining up angles was really good...
Much as I love Bob Baker and Dave Martin’s writing and Terrance Dicks’ writing/script editing (and I once had the honour of meeting and talking with Bob Baker) it’s hard to see how a lot of the dialogue (especially Ky’s, Barran’s or the Marshal’s) could’ve been delivered naturalistically; I think a naturalistic actor like William Marlowe (he played Mailer in The Mind Of Evil with his Jeff Goldblum-like ability to make a line sound off the cuff) would’ve been challenged by it.
I'd happily re-watch this over Day of the Daleks - which I find rather dull (because of the inclusion of the metal beasties). As I've mentioned before this season is very much using it's alien planet stories for telling the current affairs of the world in early 1970's, which is something not seen before in the series.
Day of the daleks??
