      For comp sci they’re pretty much on point. Most CS majors get on average 80k entry level in the dmv area

      They're really not that far off. Maybe 5-10k off max. They're in an expensive city. I was in Milwaukee getting 65k in 2015 with mechanical engineering.
      The gap is pretty small. Most of these skills are in high demand, particularly cyber security guy. He'll probably get 90.

      Comp sci is accurate is they go to GMU near Fairfax/DC (I’m about to go to GMU!!) people work those degrees make bank, entry level is 70k-90k typically

    People are so shocked the artist couldn’t think of a salary but that’s just the reality of being an artist in general. Artists work off of clients and commissions and if they do work for like a company or studio, the starting rate is like 15k at most. So saying 1.7k a month is actually pretty reasonable when you think about it.

    In another countries (like mine, Peru) when people ask you about your salary you answer what you get paid monthly. The US is the only country that I know that answers that question with their anual amount. The first time that I heard it I was very confused lol

      You are taxed annually on your income, which means your deductibles are annual as well. Your annual gross income is more indicative of your net income than your monthly gross income

      Same, I finished a masters in Business analytics in 2021 and couldn’t find a job for 10 months. I had one offer 25-30 an hour but didn’t take it because of company reputation and I thought I deserved 70-80k out the gate.
      Had to take a job that made $28-$30k for 6 months out of desperation. I’m at another job now making over 80k so we are all good now. But listening to some of these kids, the expectations might be a little high for entry level.

      @@mokah5619 Computer science majors usually get paid no less than 70k in the US entry level. The cyber security guy is spot on as well due to high demand. Those classes are no joke, which is why they are one of the hardest degrees to get and pay so much. I assume these kids have done their research though

    I got my degree in psychology and my first job paid very little maybe about 25k and I was dealing with a really tough population. I currently work in psychiatric research at a private university and still make less than 40k. The only nice thing about where I work now is that the people are chill and the doctors I work with are nice and also I have and office with a door that automatically locks😅

      The cs majors are very accurate. Its arpund 70 to 90k entry for software and other engineering discipline. Im 5 years in with a eletrical engineering degree doing firmware and making 130k in wisconsin which is really good for a low income state.

    I think these are pretty realistic expectations. I've seen quite a few of my friends with CS degrees clearing 75k first year and now mid 100s 4 years later. I graduated with a Liberal Arts degree and just took what came to me and making pretty good money, but nothing related to my degree. If your open to work, hard working, network and talk to friends, you can find a way to a good job, degree or not.

      @@grealish2234 they do, but it heavily depends on location. For example, entry level software engineer in NYC you can expect 90k-100k (which for NYC isn't really that much), but if you go somewhere like Albany, NY you can only expect about 55k-65k maybe a few in the 70s

    i am less than a year away from graduating college with a bachelors degree in art. i did not once think about how much i would make when i graduated, although i had the expectation that it would not be much. i am going to become a teacher so i have now been looking into local salaries, hoping to make 45k if i can land a job in the county i’m currently living in

    I did biochem
    Imagine my shock when
    1. I was offered $14 an hour WITH a bs
    2. Couldn't be hired as a scientist because I need a phd or 7+ years experience
    All throughout undergraduate school they said we were scientists
    Unless you get amazing internships, best you'll get is lab tech
    I started at 50k and now I'm making 85k 2 years later
    No one tells you that if you don't go back to school you'll just end up in pharma or healthcare

      I had the same problem. Economics major, minor in management, associates in business administration. Little did I know that the competition for jobs is INSANE. I applied to hundreds of places. Had incredible internships, 3.5 GPA, was an All American athlete. Had no shot. Couldn't even get a job in the career field I wanted. Couple years later I got a job as an apprentice Lineman for a massive utility company. Now I make over 400K a year, crazy benefits, 401k, pension, etc. I work with guys who don't even have a college degree. They're 24 making this kind of money. Trades seem to be an extremely overlooked career. I was told when I was in highschool if I didn't go to college or went into the trades I wouldn't make much money. Now I regret college and pissed I spent so much money for nothing.

      @@SynACK244 Brah no, just no. Don't let media fool you. InfoSec is not easy to get into, and when you are just starting out the pay is low, just like everywhere else. BTW you don't often START in InfoSec. You work in Help Desk or some level of Ops then pivot into InfoSec once you can add some value. (Years later) This creates misleading info on InfoSec pay and barrier of entry.

    Marketing and business analytics going into 90k 😂 I just didn’t that degree… either they can afford to stack on internships instead of waiting tables in school (and still get lucky), or they’re in a ridiculously high expense area. In Atlanta, entry level business positions that pay over 60k basically don’t exist, and in my little Appalachian town I had to settle for a “sales” job just to make over 45k

      Why do you need your company to trust you? You're not marrying the company. You just need them to pay you on time for as long as you're working there. Workers know the company will fire them if it improves their bottom-line, and companies know the worker will move on the moment they get a better offer. That's exactly how it should be.

      @@holyconcertking lol sure. I've experienced financial hardships and been grateful for income. I've had fantastic bosses and terrible ones. And i treated them all accordingly. I stayed at a job for six months more than I planned to as a favor to a manager who was kind to me and helped me when I needed it.
      But I've never been so grateful that I'd put my 'loyalty' to a corporation over my own career growth and financial well-being. I can't even imagine what that'd feel like. I don't think any company has ever been so grateful to me they'd take a loss to give me a pay raise.

    It's sad because 60-80k a year is like 40-60 after taxes. How the heck can anyone live comfortably off that income. Inflation and taxes are insane with this administration and its only going to get worse. On top of that, these kiddos are starting their lives off with 10s of thousands in debt. It will take them 20 years to pay it off.

    Some of these comments think the CS majors are overestimating but they're really not lol. Tech pays a ton and "lower paying" industries like aerospace in low cost-of-living areas still pay software engineers a minimum of 70k

    I studied business and hold an MBA. My first salary was 17k granted 17 years ago. That same job pays 38k today. So the college kids expectations are a bit out there.

      @@mohtalk I live in a metro area in the state I’m in and I am not searching for a job that pays what bls.gov is stating but everyone that I talk to is only giving 30-40 k a year for me to start off and I am a newly graduate as a RN…mind you my grades are great as well, the job I have now pays more than that…I’ve had a job interview where he stated that they would have to start me off with that pay because that is what typical entry level makes but they promised to increase the pay later

    Just so you all know… 1) computer science is an extremely oversaturated and competitive field… entry level you are going to be closer to 50-60k until you have experience (which is what they care about).
    2) job hopping to hunt higher salaries is a great way to burn bridges and never find a good job…. Tech companies talk…. They WILL call your former employer and they will want to know why you left.
    5 jobs in 5 years is not a good thing on a resume… a company likes to see consistency and dedication to your craft… not a salary hunter.

    I’m from Virginia and know this college .
    And you can’t live here making 60k it’s just bad.
    So the best is to study a career that makes more than 70k a year to live fairly better than everyone else here.
    I’m going into sonography next year and I hope to earn 80k or more which will most likely happen because the percentage rate for sonographers will go up a ton and I’ve seen they’ll be willing to pay 90k a year and give a 4K bonus if you sign up so yuh.
    I’m a senior in highschool and I just wanted to say this for others who also live in Virginia like me to start thinking of their careers cause 60k a year won’t do much here.

      I'm from Australia and don't know this college.
      You can easily live here without working because we have the dole.
      So the best thing to do here is get a high value trade, particularly a dual trade.
      I finish my apprenticeship next year. Entry level is roughly 140k AUD, however, with skill shortages that is plenty of opportunity for overtime. My tradesmen all made over 200kaud. last year on apprentice wages I was able to make $100k AUD.
      I just wanted to say this for others because this type of physical labor both grows you mentally and physically. Allows you to work on your own property legally and others. Has plenty of room to grow career wise and gets you earning money straight out of school and not accrue any debt which leaves more saving for investing.
