Finishing the 2017 GMC Terrain SLE... this was too easy...

  • It is time to reassemble the 2017 GMC Terrain SLE AWD that was hit in the right rear door and suspension. It was a very easy job even with the extra work caused by the somebodies that had been there before and the loaders at the auction. We also have some maintenance work to do before it is ready to be sold so we can knock that out as well. This job was an easy job on a vehicle that never should have been totaled. With the car market the way it is these days, insurance companies are making more to total them so it might be a trend to see minor damaged vehicles becoming total losses for a while.

Does Holden make anything similar to this??? They are the Aussie equivalent of General Motors aren’t they??

    • @BrucePierson
      @BrucePierson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nobodyspecial6436 Unfortunately, General Motors closed down the Holden brand and the assembly plant here in Australia, so Holden is no more. The last Holden Commodore, the VZ, was actually a re-badged German Opel. The Holden Trailblazer is probably similar to the Terrain, but it was made in Thailand. My son bought one a few years ago. It's a V6 turbo diesel. So no more Holdens ever. Very sad for Australia, but GM made the decision that it was no longer viable to make right-hand drive Holdens in Australia. Funny thing, I saw a right- hand drive GMC Sierra in town the other day and I've also seen a right-hand drive Dodge RAM previously.

When the 2010-2017 Terrains were in production, they captured an unheard of market share for small SUVs. They are still great sellers, luckily I stumbled on them early. Right now anything with low miles is demanding big money due to lack of supply and it is only getting worse.

I am totally convinced that a lot of cars get totaled out that shouldn't be. My 2014 Nissan Sentra was involved in a collision with a Great Pyrenees dog. He jumped at an oncoming school bus just before impact. As a result he hit the hood and grill. The grill was driven back against the brace that the airbag sensor is on thus setting off the driver's airbag and the seat belt tensioners. Repair estimate was almost $7000 with the airbag and seat belt repair taking up almost $4000. Our insurance company insisted that everything associated with the driver's airbag has to be replaced with new parts and the seat belts have to be new parts. The body parts needed were the hood, grill, headlights, bumper cover and the condenser coil. The left fender was a little damaged but the body shop said that it would be easier to fix than to replace. Painting estimate was about $1500 which if they happened to find the right color parts would have been considerably less. And that was more likely because the car was a very common color. However the insurance company listed the car as being worth $7500 in good condition. The problem is that about the time the claim was settled was when new and used car prices went through the roof. If it had been a couple of months later we would have had higher advertised prices to either get more for our car or get it fixed. What is so frustrating is that the safety features that are required on cars now are often more expensive to replace than what the other damages to the car are.

Scott: When using the manual pneumatic pop rivet gun people using it are often afraid of bouncing the tip of the gun off freshly painted surfaces and sometimes do just that. I have found that as you are finishing up the pop rivet, just before the rivet shaft breaks (pops), switch from pushing down the pop rivet gun to pulling it away from the rivet. When the rivet pops, the pop rivet gun will pull away from anything in danger of damage and all will be well!

Indeed cars "clip" together now days. The seamless designs really work will for the method and the weight savings from the 50's to the 80's methods is notable. They are lighter and do better in accidents as it relates to the occupant. The engineering, though at times odd from a maintenance perspective, is pretty impressive.

You talked about the reasons for totaling a vehicle in the first video. My friend had a V6 Alfa Romeo, I can't remember the model. He drove over some debris in the road which knocked off the sump drain plug. He stopped immediately and had the car transported to his home with a flatbed truck. The car was totaled, the reason given that the engine could be damaged, although telling the insurance guy he stopped immediately. This could be normal procedure, because you could get monkeys that keep on driving until the engine seizes up.

Truck market is a bad investment right now with fuel prices and it is about to get worse.

I noticed there are some dealers that specialize in fixing salvage cars. They then have them state inspected and sell as bonded title cars. Normally I would be interested as a consumer and save some money but every one I ever checked into had zero repair and accident history. Plus the prices they often ask are ridiculous. If I could only see what happened to a car, like on this channel, I would seriously consider buying one.

I miss seeing the was of cash at the end of the build.I suppose other people think its gauche or whatever. Not me tho,it's just honest gain from honest work. And Lord knows we need more honest people, even in the Land of Corruption and Rust.

Crazy question- why clean the roof... but not the rear when installing the passenger brake light and molding?
    🤔
It’s like you have your own peculiar OCD!

I wanted to remove the inner rear quarter cover in my SUV to fix a minor wiring issue.
The process first required removing the radio and centre console then the front and rear seats the side pillar trim and sill plates and front and rear wheel liners, all to get to one plug that was not connected properly at the factory.
I only slightly exaggerated I didn’t really need to remove the radio. I was fitting a reverse camera that came with a new head unit . The wire for it fished easily over the headliner.

Scott, when do you think you will have the "Brake Job Hammer" in stock in your Amazon store? A real time saver. My brakes are grinding. 😁

I'm going to say it's probably very obvious but I assuming that you don't have any problem selling these cars that you'd work on if you did a video on them because they all know how it was fixed!!!
And the market being what it is I'm sure you're not getting a really good price for these cars which is a good thing for you I'm sure. Cars are becoming an extremely rare thing in good shape now! All the best from Canada

Thanks for another great video. You have made me aware of better ways to do things. I have been stuck at home watching to much TH-cam and it gave me an idea on the Mustang. Go fund me page. Lots of us would like to see it complete and the afternoon crew would look good in it. I watched this guy rebuilding an airplane (401 Cessna) get hundreds of thousands to fix the plane. Make it clear if people donate it is just to see you fix the car. Some day you will sell it and you will have just made more money. Just a thought. From someone tag has had way to much time on his hands
