Love the fresh haircut! I’m with you on packing my lunch every day and not paying for manicures. I do my own manicures, pedicures, house cleaning, yard work, etc because I don’t want to spend the money on something I’m perfectly capable of doing myself, but I love an overpriced designer bag. 😂
I’m pretty poor as I didn’t get a opportunity in life I was raised with alcoholic parents and my mum used to leave the family home for 6 weeks at a time this put me in the position where I couldn’t go to school as I had to take care of my 2 younger brothers I try to be happy with the little I have in life even if I get it from a thrift shop but I do love your videos wishing you much happiness in your life thank you for your videos
We have to create our own opportunities. My brother broke his neck and never finished high school and never went to college. Today he is a successful business owner making high six figures. He and his wife own a beautiful home and have a lovely family. Don’t let school get in the way of your education Mark Twain once said.
I really enjoyed this discussion. Gosh! so much I could say! The idea of curation, really becoming clear about what is important in our unique lives, the recognition that sometimes our shopping covers a deeper longing that is non-material--this is a lesson I learned years ago as I sat outside a Marshalls, wondering what I was doing there yet again--it was an almost daily occurrence that I would find myself shopping--I realized I was lonely, so I called a girlfriend. I sat on the phone in the parking lot. When I finished the call, I drove home without going into the store. I began to ask myself "What am I feeling?" when I felt the urge to shop or have a second glass of wine. Little by little, I began to see some of the underlying non-material needs I had, and found more rewarding ways to fill them. Like going for a long walk, sitting outside with a book, spending time with friends and family, or seeing that I have a healthy savings for my future. I am still very much a work in progress, but through your discussions and the comments I see that I am not alone in seeking something more meaningful--but still acknowledging that I love beautiful things. Thank you.
I suspect the mean comments were more because you touched a nerve with these people and they haven't found a good balance in their lives. Years ago I read a book called "The Tightwad Gazette" and the opening chapter talked about how everyone's reasons for saving money on some things was going to be different for each individual. Maybe you wanted to invest that money, buy a home or own a fleet of snowmobiles. It's a personal choice we each can make and just because we CAN afford a specific item doesn't mean we HAVE to buy it, nor are we being hypocritical by not buying it. It's just a conscious choice.
For sure. People take every comment or observation as an attack. But as you say, it just tells us they are hearing the message ‘loud and clear for themselves. So like ancient Kings, they attack the messenger. Whereas I just feel excited by the possibilities for my own life, and interested in the ones that don’t apply to me. So sad tho’ that people lash out with nastiness and rudeness.
I think that commenter was right, if you can’t afford Starbucks then why buy designer bags. However what they missed is that even when you can afford both, doesn’t mean your money needs to go there. If it’s not worth buying then I won’t buy it. I don’t care to use my money on Starbucks even if it’s 1p because I make better coffee at home. However I’ll buy a designer bag because I can afford it and I value it. It’s not only about “affording” things, It’s about value like you said. I don’t care to spend £££ on 5* hotels, I focus more on 9.5+ guest rated hotels. I do my own manicures (because I can and I don’t want to use my money or time for someone else to do it) but I SPLURGE on good, comfortable and beautiful pair of shoes!
An opinion isn’t the point. It’s a rude comment. Completely unnecessary, and very undisciplined, as it says more about them than anyone else. We are good at telling others how to be, whereas if we just listen and draw in what is useful, we’d all win. If it doesn’t impact us, why does it matter if someone else buys starbys even on credit? It’s so lacking a boundary.
Good job not letting the negative comments get to you! You know your goal in life and you work towards it. There is no reason you should listen to the comments of people that have no say in your life. And we recognize how very gracious it is of you to share your experiences, your pitfalls and lessons learned with us!
Well said Eileen. Just because I can afford luxuries does not mean I can justify buying it. I prefer to be financially debt free. At the end of the day these designer bags are just functional. I do enjoy and admiring well made bags as eye candies. I am contented with what I have. Influencers keep complaining about why they cannot stop spending on frivolous things and worse still they are in debt. Some had realised it and soon all luxuries no longer appeal to them. So glad they have opened their eyes and they are at a better happier place.
I love seeing high end jewelry and luxury bags, leather goods, watches, shoes. They are so exquisite and lovely. But I don’t have any. I feel my authentic self using canvas totes and small canvas handbags.
I'm the same way: I only have a few hundred to spend on clothes each year while I build my business, but I will spend it all on 1-3 vintage pieces (usually 1930s/1940s slips/lingerie). I really value and appreciate each one, since I know it will get worn. In fact, the last silk slip I bought is a duplicate of the one I wear multiple times I week -- I absolutely know it will also be used every single week.
Very inspiring, especially reminding us that what we see in social media such as fancy cars, fancy clothes, fancy living, is not the real life and is unsustainable. I value my time to rest and my handbags.
This was an ‘eye opening’ discussion. I too have pared down my wardrobe - in which I found clothes that still had the tags on them. I have also pared down relationships. I prefer only positive associations with family and friends. I do enjoy nice hotels and nice shoes but I no longer visit hair/nail salons. Most recently, I have started writing. Thank you. I greatly appreciate your channel.
Eileen! :D Thank you, as always, for keeping me grounded. Thanks to you, I've been able to stop the shopping train. I can't say I'm not tempted, but now that I have my "designer dozen" I know where the line is drawn. I'm currently on a no-buy to keep my focus on my finances this year. It has been a journey into and now out of the luxury world, but I realized something about myself, it is really true that human desire is unlimited. We have to be the ones who define those limitations to sculpt the life we want. Keep being your amazing self and thank you for sharing your thoughts. I look forward to your videos, every upload, every time.
Thanks for sharing. Where to spend the money is very personal. For me, travel is my number one. I don’t have any brand bag, shoes. But I spend money to go to places, last year alone, I went to Spain, Costa Rica, Mediterranean cruise, China. These experiences gave me so much enjoyment and happiness about life. ❤
Wonderful to hear. For me, it’s the big cities - NYC, Chicago, Paris, Prague, Istanbul, etc. of course once I get there, I wanna have lots of coffee out and people watch! LOL.
I´m doing my own manicure at home since 15 years. When I leave the house I´ll always pack my reusable cup filled with tea or coffee. This has saved me so much money that I could use for something nice or luxury that really made me happy and fulfilled.
Retired financial advisor and fashion lover here. This was a very interesting video. The Dave Ramsey books are also quite helpful to people who are having trouble with money. That doesn’t sound like your situation but I thought I would mention it. I have never been able to bring myself to spend thousands of dollars on a handbag. It must not be something I value!😅
I value free time, that time allows me to be available to my husband and children. The material things that I value the most are my fine jewelry and high jewelry collection. I thoroughly enjoy wearing my jewelry daily or when we go out to nice dinners. Thank you so much for sharing I love your videos and I'm a silent watcher ha 😊 😊
Loved that video Eileen! As for what I value: Im team jewelry also because they are on me 24h/24, I wear all of them all the time so I reduce the risk of home robbery. As for non material: I value presence. I hate when people are talking to you but you see they are think of something else or looking away at distractions, or cell phone etc. Even if I dont see my friends often, we are fully present when we reunite. Same with kids, hubby, etc Being 100% in 2024 is a challenge but a true value for people in my circle❤
Thank you for being so straightforward and honest ! 🙏🏼That is rare ! Actually turning ‚inwards‘ and find that, what makes me leaving satisfied is what I try to practice daily…because we all know materialistc things are not what makes us happy- for a longer time. Yes, i can enjoy my jewellery or nice clothes and interior. But besides that, feeling good about yourself and the life you have - comes from within.
I didn't know that "The Diderot Effect" is something I was experiencing when I bought my first Goyard tote. All of a sudden I needed all these additional accessories from Goyard just so I can use the bag comfortably 😅 Happy to say that I sold that tote and other accessories and it's a huge sigh of relief
Thank you for the great content. Sad but true that there are people who assume that if you don’t buy a thing, you can’t afford it. I am also a big fan of Ramit Sethi. I started to adopt His philosophy of spending extravagantly on things you love and cut back mercilessly on things you don’t value. What I value most is fine jewellery and time to rest. I also value financial freedom which is a long term goal of me.
Great video, Eileen! I have a soft spot for handbags and shoes. And I've made many materialistic dreams come true. But living here in the North Europe I really value my merino jumpers because I wear them day after day until it's spring again 😄 An expensive handbag can sit on the shelf for months, not to mention some high heels. But jumpers are on constant use. From the non-material side I value most time with family and friends, people who mean everything to me ❤️
Thank you for another insightful video. I gave it some thought- my non-material item is my health. I have a quite complicated health history and sometimes forget how blessed I am to be where I am today. Material wise I value clothing the most. It helps me disguise some physical imperfections from my health challenges and helps my self-confidence in that way.
Well said Eileen! Minimalism gave me the inspiration. Same here thanks to your video’s 😊 You can have beautiful handbags or jewellery, but you pick the pieces very mindfull. You don’t want to overspend and clutter your house with too much stuff. Thank you Eileen❤
I value my nail appointments because I get an acrylic coating on my very weak nails. They always look so much prettier. I make my own coffee because I bought a Nespresso machine - my previous coffee making was weak 😂 I enjoy relaxing on my non work days, by using my fine China to eat my breakfast. My late grandmother saved everything for special occasions, but I have learned that every day I live to see is special.
Eileen, another great video, thank you! You have created a perspective on "luxury and less" that works perfectly for me. I started following you a year ago, viewed several of your previous videos and saw your amazing transformation. Thank you for the inspiration!
Spending habits are totally individual. I spend money on authentic jewelry, organic food & and nails 💅🏽. I would not spend a nickel on a Starbucks or hair coloring. As you say it’s up to priorities. Love your videos.
I haven’t convinced myself to buy a high-end bag yet because I feel that pressure of having to upgrade everything around me to “look the part”… it’s so insane. Definitely something to think about and work on 😀
@@luzm3319 buying nice handbags was why I started to wear higher quality clothing. But this didn't necessarily mean designer brands, just better material items like cashmere sweaters and wool coats. 😊
Same, I started buying higher quality clothing (not designer) after buying luxury bags. And now that I have high quality clothes - I don’t feel the need for designer bags. Because I look the part without having to show off labels. Instead, I buy handbags that are good quality and that I love and sometimes it’s a Longchamp bag rather than a Chanel.
Best wishes on your return to the workforce! Additionally, thank you for your insightful commentary. Although it seems like common sense, hearing someone externally express my internal thoughts helps to reinforce the idea of being more thoughtful in decision making.
So glad to find your channel, I love seeing a balanced approach to enjoying things instead of too much or too minimal. I’m also a fan of Ramit’s approach to finance and he’s helping me fix many of the bad messages and habits I’ve had most of my life, really the most positive money guru I’ve found. Have been in a bag acquisition phase for the last few years, but I feel this is the year I curate the collection down and focus more on financial goals and figuring out what else I would like to spend on once I hit some goals.
Great retort 👍. Love your mindset❤️ I don’t berate others’ spending habit anymore. What I value and don’t value will not be what they value and don’t value. I don’t value luxury goods, trends, manicure, coffee, dining out. I do enjoy watching ppl buying and using expensive goods though.
For me it's probably shoes as my feet never change size.. i have stopped wearing heels 👠 and lo 10:18 ve flats.. i always used to wear heels as I'm only 5ft tall but i adjusted my choices and all is good. I find when shopping for clothes everything starts to look the same. So a few really good quality pieces is better but..... in saying this i recently bought a very expensive pair of dress jeans in New Zealand and after 2 washes the waist band fell apart. So it's not the cost but quality that's important. Thankyou for another wonderful video ❤❤❤❤
amazing video! yes we can all be conflicted individuals, we all value different things, I no longer feel pressured to conform to other people's standards. The material thing I care for now is bedding and mattress, non material is definitely the ability to say no if I don't feel like it.
Great video! For me, non material value was retiring quite early. Material value used to be handbags but really not anymore. It is coats and footwear for me now. Most of my jewellery was acquired years ago and some family heirloom pieces added. I don’t shop ever for jewellery anymore.
For me the material things I value the most are my collection of cashmere sweaters, silk underwear and shoes next to the cozy furniture. Like you I did some heavy lifting in the past five years and luckily now I am at a place I have enough and where I truly always dress my best and and by extension, feel my best. As for the non-material things, time is what I value above everything else. Having the possibility to chose exactly what, when and with whom you want to do something is the ultimate luxury.
im with, just because we can we shouldnt. the only things i splurge on are my bags, getting a hair cut, and mods on my car. i have a 20yr old car! our home is very modest and small. i do my own mani/pedi, home maintenance (im very handy), yard work etc. when we travel we do hostels because we dont spend that much time in the room. we do economy air travel. we also dont spend much on food, our grocery budget is strick! we both have our vices/aka expensive things we like to spend our money on and those things arent it. i even work part time at a department store so i can get a discount on clothes & shoes.
Yes, spending is such a personal choice. I’m not interested in fancy restaurants or expensive clothes. But I enjoy time freedom, books, occasional Starbucks and pedicures.
I value my non designer handbag and my jewelry . It keeps me organized and a space for everything I carry. The non material thing I value is travel. I may not always go on luxury vacations but, I do enjoy it no matter where I end up in the world. As for those people who feel that Starbucks and eating out is king well, I try my best to take a page out of Warren Buffet. He eats at McDonalds everyday, doesnt drive a fancy car and does not live in a mansion.. I dont eat at McDonalds, I dont drive a fancy car, and I dont live in a mansion. I do order take away sometimes and yes sometimes I have a Starbucks as well.
My non-luxury thing I appreciate is my health. I have health problems and I work everyday to stay as healthy as possible. For my luxury I want to say clothes, jewelry, shoes, handbags but I mindlessly buy those things and I don't live a lifestyle where I can enjoy them. I want to say my luxury would be my education. I already have two master's degrees and am thinking of getting a final third one.
@@ColourfulNoir I have a Master of Science in Psychology, a Master of Arts in Human Resources Management. I have an autoimmune disorder and I have some fitness goals I want to achieve so the third and so the third and final will be a Master of Science in Sports & Health Science with a concentration in Exercise & Chronic Disease. This last one is more personal than it is for a career choice.
I don’t get coffee out either. I make 2 espresso shots in any coffee to go cup and then add milk and hot water to fit that mug instead of trying to fit 2 whole coffee cups in a too go mug. This saves me a lot of money. I also learned to even bring to the airport or beauty appointments with no shame. The other part of this for me is bringing a bag it fits in so you dont lose the mug and all your savings.😂 I also am thinking about taking off nails. I think cashmere linen cotton and wool and leather are worth the splurge. Any massive designer conglomerate brand is a rip off.
I think sometimes we have to consider how we appear. It would be nice if that were never the case but we are judged on appearance. And if we have a $35k handbag but our car won’t start because we neglected routine maintenance- then folks are right to make other assumptions about our character. Or if we can’t make rent but fly first class to luxury vacations. It does speak to character. Sad but true. Personal choices are personal choices- I can choose to do my own mani/pedi and I hate Starbucks coffee on flavors. But in my expensive purse I have money for luxury items and I can pay my bills too. Then no one has aright to judge.
Hi, about material things, I really value a nice cozy stylish home and to be curated as a person (tidy nice hair, hydrated skin, make-up etc). On the other side (immaterial things), I value investing in myself (LifeLongLearning).
Material - clothes and shoes of good quality and comfortable, good skin, good food, appliances that help me save time and energy Non-material - the freedom to not have to put up with toxic and disgusting people and situations, opportunities to stretch my mind and try new things, and making new memories with loved ones. These are easy to list out because in the last few months: I resigned from a toxic workboss, took up courses, reconnected with people from my past, took a trip to Taiwan with my mum, where I unexpectedly bought 3 new clothing items because the quality and comfort justified it, got persuaded by my beautician to take on a new treatment package, and am now researching robot vacumms and robot mops 😂
I decided to cut out those material stuff and spend my money on travel with the family, investments and jewelery/watches as they retain value better than bags. As for bags, I bought the classics and is enough - no need to chase the next fashionable thing.
look i’m happy drop a pretty penny on a BKC but i’m allergic to taking a cab 🫣 i live in a city where public transport is of a really high standard and it kills me to pay for a cab ride. so to each his or her own when it comes to spending. i won’t spend on drinks but im all for the overpriced fruit 🤣
As a high income earner and a very educated lady, you understand that you can have anything you want but not everything.

A bit of mindfulness can go a long way. Sending you positive vibes xx
Love your mindset❤️
I don’t berate others’ spending habit anymore. What I value and don’t value will not be what they value and don’t value. I don’t value luxury goods, trends, manicure, coffee, dining out. I do enjoy watching ppl buying and using expensive goods though.
Thanks for sharing!! Xx
Thank you for sharing xx
I just started watching Ramit this year and I bought his book on Audible. He is great and I am enjoying learn from him so far.
Totally agree!xx
I got rid of most of my costume jewelry. All I want is a pair of Diamond stud earrings, to wear daily.
Ramit drives a 19 years old Honda Accord. My material splurge is definitely not on cars either & always have been paying for them in cash (no finance)
Thanks for clarifying! I listen to his podcasts regularly- so good xx
Thanks for sharing as always😊really enjoy watching your video
So glad!xx
Thanks so much for this video. Love the approach you took here. I really needed to hear this today ❤.
Glad it was helpful!xx
amazing video! yes we can all be conflicted individuals, we all value different things, I no longer feel pressured to conform to other people's standards. The material thing I care for now is bedding and mattress, non material is definitely the ability to say no if I don't feel like it.
I agree, a good mattress is soooo important! Xx
Great video! For me, non material value was retiring quite early. Material value used to be handbags but really not anymore. It is coats and footwear for me now. Most of my jewellery was acquired years ago and some family heirloom pieces added. I don’t shop ever for jewellery anymore.
Thanks for sharing!xx
❤️❤️
Yes, spending is such a personal choice. I’m not interested in fancy restaurants or expensive clothes. But I enjoy time freedom, books, occasional Starbucks and pedicures.
Thanks for sharing!!xx
You are such a smart person. Thank you for posting this video. I value travel and ratting at great restaurants.
Glad it was helpful! xx

Thoroughly enjoyed this!
Glad you enjoyed it! Xx
My material things are good quality clothing pieces like cashmere sweaters. Non-material wise, time for my family and my mental health.
❤️❤️
Great points to think about ❤
❤️❤️
You are such an inspiration.
You’re too kind, thank you xx
Beautiful sweater!
Thank you! 😊
Love your turtleneck! Please share the link. Your "what i wore" link does not give the information. :)
That’s wonderful! What’s your master degree in? Xx
Love your hair Eileen your a great inspiration thank you
Hair looks great, Eileen.
Thank you so muchxx
New to your channel I’m enjoying can’t wait to see more😊
Yay! Thank you!xx
Love that! I definitely value personal care too - hair care, dental car, skin care xx
Material - clothes and shoes of good quality and comfortable, good skin, good food, appliances that help me save time and energy
Non-material - the freedom to not have to put up with toxic and disgusting people and situations, opportunities to stretch my mind and try new things, and making new memories with loved ones.
Excellent video deep insights
I decided to cut out those material stuff and spend my money on travel with the family, investments and jewelery/watches as they retain value better than bags. As for bags, I bought the classics and is enough - no need to chase the next fashionable thing.
I value time spent with my family.
As a material thing I value jewellry.
❤️❤️
I really liked you but when you start discussing your favorite books. I LOVE YOU!

I love your videos!!!
look i’m happy drop a pretty penny on a BKC but i’m allergic to taking a cab 🫣 i live in a city where public transport is of a really high standard and it kills me to pay for a cab ride. so to each his or her own when it comes to spending. i won’t spend on drinks but im all for the overpriced fruit 🤣
❤️❤️
I love this channel 😊
Material thing: High quality knits that I wear day in and day out. Non-Material thing: my kids' education.
❤️❤️
I really value a great perfume and time to take care of my elderly parents.
❤️❤️❤️
Material: my gym in my apartment. Non material: self-esteem.
Material-bags and coats, non material-healthy family ♥️👩🦰♥️
Love that!xx
I’m going to add another comment- for me it is important to be able to live well within my means. End of story.
Material - Leather shoes, Non-Material - Family time
Im sure it wasn't about you but really about themselves
I value my jewelry and good health at 66 years old. 😊
