Things I Refuse To Spend Money On As A Luxury Minimalist.

  • Hi there, I'm Eileen. I stumbled upon minimalism about 4 to 5 years ago. Since then I cut out many things from my life. I can't tell you how refreshing that was. At one point, I actually considered the idea of living as a hardcore minimalist. It didn't happen. I felt guilty about it because I didn't think I was a real minimalist. After a while however, I realised it is ok to enjoy certain things while saving on other areas. In this video, I share the things I no longer buy as a luxury minimalist xx

I feel empowered now that I have more control over my finances! I didn't buy a single new lipstick in 2023, no starbucks coffee , bring lunch to work and expensive skincare bans are doing wonders to mental health. the idea of retiring early stops me from mindless shopping! Intentional purchases make me happy and at peace!!!

Yes! I bought sooo many sheet masks and under eye patches during the pandemic bc they sparked joy during that time, but they are SOOO expensive, and honestly I find aquaphor does a great job of sealing in moisture and product, and brightening my complexion, like those masks do , and it’s cheaper and requires less packaging. I still have weeks worth of masks to use, I really went nuts!

    Summary:
    1. Books-majority at library or on kindle
    2. Impulse Purchases-wait at least 2 weeks before purchasing
    3. Don’t Upgrade Gadgets-if they work don’t upgrade
    4. Special Occasion Outfits-totally can repeat an outfit
    5. Take out coffee-no Starbucks, don’t have to order when you pass a shop
    6. High Heels-the pain is simply not worth it
    7. Bottled Water-use water filter at home
    8. No Souvenirs-always forgets about them
    9. Luxury Bag Charms-not practical even if cute
    10. Nail Polish, Manicure or Pedicure-just has plain nails
    11. No New Makeup Products-just sticks to what works and essential
    12. Designer T-Shirts-no worth the price
    13. Cleaning Sprays-uses vinegar with water
    14. Home Decorations-after initial interior designer bought items, no new purchases

I am absolutely an outfit repeater. I live in CA and started holiday traveling about 3 years ago, so I had to purchase "winter" clothes. I, unsurprisingly, do not wear this clothes in CA, but I DO repeat my winter outfits to whatever destination I'm going to that year. The pieces are quality and keep me warm. Yes, my travel pictures have the same sweater from one year to the next but the ability to afford to even travel far outweighs the materialistic. Plus, I've learned that changing up a scarf makes your outfit look completely different lol

Great video. I have recently given my home a good sweep through getting rid of unnecessary items... I found myself in a shop yesterday just looking and well I started trying on things. Half way through I just hung it all up left thinking what was I doing I don't need this so a win for my pocket . It's a hard lesson sometimes but a good one .

I love this video!! As adults, it’s time for us to be ourselves, and we don’t need to buy into trends that don’t really work for us - like w the leather handbag charms, or high heels, that you mentioned. I don’t buy anything higher than ~9cm, and if so, only chunky more stable heels, bc I’m a runner and I value my feet for running, and higher heels just hurt too much & made me afraid of injury! It’s so wonderful to have voices like yours on the internet 😊

    Same here.
No bottled water: I bring my own water bottle everyday.
No Starbucks coffee / drinks: sugar drinks are bad for health and skin
No mindlessly exploring makeup: only stick with the makeup that is flattering on me with high cp value
No manicure, pedicure or nail polish: saved a lot of money and time
No upgrade on iPhones / electronics: never a fan
No designers’ clothes: never thought about buying
I still wear hills, but I only have a few pairs, when compared to flats i have / buy.

Making your coffee at home is a great saver of money! I track my spending and even with one coffee a day, I can easily spend over $1200 a year. So I went cold turkey, bought a decent coffee machine and cut down on that spending.

When we go fine dining, I remember the food we ate that we both liked and search the recipes online. I try to recreate them. So we get more than the cost of the dinner but I learned something new that would remind us of beautiful memories. One way of being frugal.

I have a nice, small collection of polishes from Cirque (less toxic) but I still found myself painting my nails less in 2023 since I started utilizing a nail block. The block really makes the Clean Nail look _clean_ and polished.

I love to travel, but I find my favorite souvenirs are the photos I take. I will print out a couple of my favorite photos, put them in nice picture frames, and display that as a memory of the trip. It’s so much more gratifying than some shot glass or figurine cluttering up my space.

I take care of my clothes and shoes, i repair my clothes and bring the shoes to the cobbler as soon the seasons changes. In the winter i bring my spring/summer shoes and in spring my wintershoes. I‘m so picky with 41, i need good quality material in my wardrobe. There are great stores with a great selection of timeless designs like COS, Uniqlo etc. The key is how you take care of the material, cashmere handwashing, ironing shirts, proper hangers and storage. I absolutely understand your points…We‘ll as humans we’re all consume to much and on the other hand the mountains of stuff its time consuming. I plan 2024 a no buy year, no new clothes, no new shoes and no new stuff.

Love the list! I'm a maximalist by heart and I love collecting especially books. I re-read a lot so it makes sense to me to have them on hand. I do borrow books from the library first before buying coz I only want to keep books that I really like and I know that I will re-read in the future. I do agree about electronics, I don't replace mine as long as it is still working. I hate the hassle of transferring data and re-learning how to operate the new gadgets 😂

I stopped buying coffee out years okay. I own a few coffee makers including a cold brew one. I am very happy with experimenting and making my own. You are right about nail polish. I also thanks to my grandmother built a classic wardrobe. I still have clothes from years ago that look great. I have replaced some this year due to wear over a long period of time but I do not buy trendy. My vice had been handbags but I am now working on that. I no longer feel like I need to have everyone I see. Hopefully I can get back to where I once was.

My only buys this Winter were a very good pair of hiking boots and jacket to match- sale items of course. I have a signature white sweater I replace as weight fluctuates and I have it in a round neck and polo. My go to out and about in Winter .. a nod to the snow we never see any more:) And one bag. Sale. Necessary for my day job. Coffees cost a fortune- I brought home every paper cup for a year to meditate on how much it adds up to. Now wondering if I can do a craft project with them!

My Fave Items I buy At This Time: 1) Cards & ornaments for next year 2). Decore & table wear (my fave colour is Red & I love snow patterns all year) 3) Food &Drinks.Holliday blend coffe & teas or chocolates taste great till spring. 4) PJs agin I like Red & snowflakes Flannel good till spring. Buying a few fun thing the end of oneChistmas season means I don't get FOMO at the beginning next one. Great vidi 😎☕💋

As the next year is fast approaching, I’ve made a very short list of items I’ve been wanting for quite some time that I plan to purchase over the next year. I add things into my shopping cart or wish list and give it time to think if I really need it. sometimes it goes out of stock or I go back and look at it and realize it's not something I want or something I will wear daily. Yes it helps me save. I stop buying dresses for special ocassions too bc those don't happen often and I stop buying heels. Now I buy more of clothes I will wear more often. I also stop waiting for a special day to wear nice. I try to wear nicer even at home. I am more into comfort nowadays.

I absolutely love your state of mind. And I get where you’re totally coming from. Spend my money on trivial things. let’s just say a wallet I gotta have one in black, and brown color. But I’m happy to say I’ve had the same wallet for five years and it still looks brand new . my price point in life will never buy me or get one a Chanel or any big name pocketbook companies Chanel, Gucci,H, or a Louis Vuitton, I would (die)LOVE to have, one but will never be in my budget in my lifetime. Now I do truly believe in re-purposing purses. I never throw mine away. I always put them in a bag and put them in a suitcase. I live in a small home. I don’t have a way to display my purses or my shoes as nice as you have Single mother of four raising my children were the most important thing to me. The most expensive purse I’ve ever gotten was Coach. But I did go to the extremes where I would buy a purse once a year on my celebration of life. In my 20s, I was diagnosed with cancer. And so I thought getting a personal year would be just the right thing and now that is totally taken over my life as far as I have way too many. I cannot tell you how quickly that adds up. yes and I probably could sell them. But what I choose to do is a donate them and not to Goodwill. I go to like women shelters and even some of my bags look like a man’s suitcase bag. So I love the fact that I get to help other people and otherwise they would never get to own, it’s the best smile on my face because after all, that’s what we have things for if you do not pull it out and use it for the past year or two then you don’t need it, but somebody else truly does. My compulsion with buying were so bad that I have literally boxes and boxes of school supplies that many years ago when they were a penny or five cents for things and I still continue to give them out to community and go to schools that’s how many I have it’s ridiculous , but I’m always happy to give so thank you for helping me see some more things that I was missing. We have been in the same house for almost 20 years and stuff like that ends up cluttering your home I like to live clean nice smooth areas where I can vacuum , and you don’t realize how bad someone else needs it and you need to get rid of it. Thank you thank you thank you.

In my adult life, I've gotten two professional manicures. The experience was nice both times, but I could never see myself doing it regularly. I just do my nails at home. I also keep my nails short as I can't stand how long nails feel. I have long fingers, so short nails look fine on me.

Wonderful video. Makes you think about all the things we collect over the years and why? I don't drink coffee and I don't wear polish on my finger nails, but I do get a pedicure every six to eight weeks especially in the spring/summer months here in sunny and hot Phoenix, Arizona. We wear sandals a lot. I gave up heels a long time ago. Comfort is the way to go. I am just about to turn 67. I am working on spending less on clothes.

I stopped buying Starbucks YEARS ago. What a giant wait of money. I brew high end Coffee at home....I cook at home most days, bring my lunch & 95% of the time cook Dinner, always Breakfast. We do drive Cars for many years... We stopped the mass consumerism long ago. I even scour FB Marketplace for items people practically give away! We're downsizing to spend more time traveling!

Great video as always. I wonder if you still see the worth in your handbag collection even if you don't have a day job anymore? How often do you normally wear your handbags these days, do you find enough reasons/places/occasions where you could wear them to show them off? It would be a shame to have all this collection to just sit on a shelf.

Quite a lot of my money goes into caring for my animals, includong horses, goats, donkeys and llamas and alpacas. So therefore no need for fancy clothes. I find good deals on carharrt and duluth trading post on secondhand sites. Also army surplus for heavy yard and barn work. No sense in doing my nails, i keep them clipped back. Hair goes up in a knot. No jewelry, it would be dangerous, especially when im usong the logsplitter or chain saw to cut stove wood. Makeup? Waste of time where i live.

I travel so much that I just don’t have the capacity to bring all these items people splurge on with me. How do you fit 10 bags into a suitcase to fly overseas for 11 hours? You don’t. Therefore a tight curated collection of items I can bring with me to dinner, a business meeting, or a a lunch with my child are prefect. Lately I have been enjoying Hermes bags. They are built to last, fit lots of items, and are appropriate for many occasions.

No designer clothing/bags as I can’t really justify spending so much $$$ on a logo.

I don't understand the relevance of "Covid" here. We're no longer in lockdown, and most people who have jobs are back to work by now; they probably want to look presentable on the job. So you're saying we should all walk around like slobs because Covid happened? I don't agree with that at all. One can dress well without spending a fortune on clothes.
