Thai New Year, also known as Songkran or Songkran Splendours, is the national holiday marking the start of the Thai New Year. It occurs on April 13th annually, with the holiday period extending from April 14th to 15th. In Pattaya, the celebration has been extended; the most active days are April 18 and 19.
In Siam, the New Year was initially celebrated on Songkran until 1888 when it was changed to April 1st. Later, in 1940, the date was moved to January 1st, officially making it the New Year. The traditional Songkran festival was then established as a national holiday. Celebrations are renowned for their public water fights, symbolizing ritual cleansing, which have gained popularity among both Thai locals and foreigners.
