Nice job catching that Scanlan hides how he really feels from the rest of the group. I think you are the first reactors I've seen who've noticed that how Scanlan acts when others are around him and when they are not looking at him are different.
Grog and Pike are best friends, akin to siblings. "When he was young, Grog was exiled from the Herd of Storms by it's leader, Grog's uncle Kevdak, for taking pity on a helpless old gnome that the tribe was attacking. He was then taken in by that same gnome, Wilhand Trickfoot, and raised alongside his great-great-granddaughter Pike."
Scanlan does like Pike, they're not subtle about it. He adores her. He just doesn't hold out any actual hope, because he fully believes she's too good for him, and he's resigned himself to not dragging her down by being with her. So he couches it as a joke, to avoid shit getting too awkward.
Yeah, Kiki is pretty awkward at times. I always kinda describe her as the homeschooled kid that gets to go out into the world for the first time and just kinda stumbles through till they get it.
With an intelligence score of 6 (10 being considered the sentient average and 4 usually being "base animal intelligence"), equating Grog to a child isn't wholly inaccurate and maybe even almost generous. It's something he even meta-refers to in-character with remarks like "I have an intelligence of 6, I think I know what I'm doing."
In dnd a typical guard npc has 10 hp, the player characters (vox machina) are around level 8-10 here and that gives them anywhere from 60-100 hp, these ghostly wraiths steal life when they hit you, this is why the guards drop so quickly while vox machia can survive and take more hits. Also they hint at the pike and grog friendship in the first episode, when she heals his lacerated and broken ribs she says "i got you old friend" and then after she tries to get the group to stay and fight grog was the only one to stay behind and he picked her up to ride on his shoulders...
Yall not wrong about Keyleth having the most potential. Level 20 for most characters are practically demigods, but Druids are actually OP as FUCK, even in comparison
Most casters are really OP in the late game. Its just a matter of keeping them alive until level 11-15. Martial Classes excel really well in early game due to having higher HP.
Grog and Pike go way back, Grogs Tribe tried to kill Pikes Granddad when Grog objected to killing such a small Creature his tribe beat him nearly to death and left him to die, Pikes Family helped heal grog and the two have been best buds ever since

There's some good illustrations here of TV Tropes' maxim "tropes are tools". Even standard and well-known tropes can be very entertaining if executed well. It might be a good exercise to consider how this show makes use of some fairly standard tropes in an effective and entertaining way.
Man the reason I love your reactions is that you guys have discussions afterwards that I never see any other reactors talk about. Most people just kind of go over the things that happen but don't comment on it; you guys went straight into a discussion about how you can tell the difference between when Scanlan's being just flirtatious vs. genuine, and how you subtly realized without being told outright that Grog and Pike were a duo before joining Vox Machina just from context clues. You guys are so much fun to watch!!
One could say they don't die as fast because of plot armor/main character syndrome, but another way to look at it is that they are technically a way higher level in DnD terms than any of those guards. Because I think (getting technical here) most of those guards are probably like lvl 4 tops, meanwhile, vox machina were like lvl 10/11sh at this point.
Cool thing about the reflection, the whole fight with Grog in the reflecting pool there wasn't one either. Gonna admit I didn't notice that the first time.

Ashley Johnson the voice actress that voices Pike had a gig on a tv show called "Blindspot" so she couldn't be there for a few rounds of the game that's why she couldn't go with them. The group is in LA and her gig was in New York.
I always thought of it as rotting flesh like from gangrene or worse, but yeah the necrotic effect in the cartoon was good. Even people who haven't watched the live show or played the game knew something more than just bleeding was going on.
In the original campaign, the person playing Pike had other commitments for an extended time, so she and the Dungeon Master explained her absence with a personal quest to repair her relationship with her goddess.
So Pike leaving the group for a while goes back to the original live streams. Ashley Johnson (also, the voice of Elle from the Last of Us) had to be in New York (I think) for a TV series she was filming. This caused her to miss alot of this arc.
A fun note about Grog: in D&D, stats range (normally) from 3 to 20. Travis (who plays Grog) has an infamous quote: "I have an intelligence of 6, I think I know what I'm doing" 😂 For reference, an intelligence of 6 means any dice rolls related to intelligence get 2 points *subtracted* from the roll every time 😂
While grog is a straight up gigantic murder happy giant who will either decide wether someone lives or dies on wether or not they have good ale, he is also someone who I seriously believe has never told a lie on this show. Everything he has ever said has been genuine to what he is feeling in the moment. That’s why when he has his moment with pike you know he’s a amazing friend. He didn’t try to play things down to make pike feel better, he didn’t try to flirt or anything contrived like that. He saw his friend was upset and just said the thing that made most sense to him. Just one of the many reasons he’s one of my favorites :)
you hit the nail on the head with scanlan. many don't even notice stuff like that or don't put a lot of thought into it. like anyone else he has some layers to him which will be more important in future seasons
it's not a spoiler for the show, just a piece of there backstory that they didn't mention. but pike and grog pretty much grew up together, grog saved pikes great grandfathers life, and he raised him alongside pike, basically they are adopted siblings.

Those were, I believe, Specters. They are a monster in DnD with the ability to as you've seen, pass through walls as well as resist normal attacks. They are sensitive to sunlight and their attack is a life drain. By touching you these creatures can lower your maximum hitpoints. If your hp is reduced to 0, you die rather than just going unconscious. These are actually challenge rating 1 monsters, so technically in the game they're very weak, but in groups they can be very dangerous. Challenge Rating is a measure of how hard it is for a team of players to kill a certain creature, CR 1 is almost as low as you can go, and stronger monsters can reach CR 20 or even higher in rare cases.
I would argue they were either wraiths or a homebrew undead. Specters in 5e are only CR1 and a group of guards should have been able to take them out, even with the specter's damage resistance. Wraiths on the other hand are CR5, a bit of a handful for a group of typical lvl1 NPC guards with a lvl 3 or 4 captain with them. Both specters and wraiths have the same abilities and weaknesses, save one that the wraith has, the ability to raise recently killed humanoids as specters. Neither is completely immune to damage from melee attacks; and having their Sunlight Sensitivity triggered doesn't make them easier to hit, it makes it harder for them to hit you. That is why I think this is some homebrew undead; completely immune to nonmagical damage, unless their Sunlight Sensitivity is triggered.

You guys are hilarious! I really appreciate how much faith you have in Keyleth to improve her skills. She gets a bad rep in some reaction videos. But she's just learning!
So the things that attacked them are based of a dnd creature called a shadow. They are incorporeal and deal strength damage instead of hp damage. Characters have six attributes one being strength if your strength hits zero from a shadow it kills you and you turn into one.
5e shadows are not incorporeal they are amorphous, think giant blob of moving anthropomorphic darkness. They need at least 1 inch of a gap to move through objects. They could not have just reached through a wall or through people like these creatures did. Additionally, 5e shadows are only 1/2 CR. The guards should have been able to handle a few of them even if they were just level 1 NPC guards. I am thinking, as previously mentioned, they are wraiths or some homebrew undead with all the powers and weaknesses of a specter or wraith except they are completely immune to all nonmagical damage unless their Sunlight Sensitivity is trigger.
The black stuff is basically how they chose to interpret necrotic damage in D&D, or damage from lifestealing magic. I think it looks like diseased, congealed black blood. Ugh, gave me the creeps, so well done, animators!
I been watching a few reactions for this show and I got to say I love this channel's. A lot of reactors are going out of their way to prove how big a nerd they are knowing about dnd or Critical Role but you're just reacting to this as a show

Regarding another subtle hint to Pike and Grog's history: Episode 1, Bar fight: Grog gets mad at that one dude that called Keyleth a b*tch, and called him a "dick-nose". Then Pike calms him, and says "Easy Grog, we don't waste our time on talking ass-holes."
the pairs are pretty clean vex is with percy, vax is with the elf girl, and the two little people sorry grog you are friendzoned, if you think about it he is too big for her anyway .... just saying ....
Eh, the Vex and Percy ship wasn't actually confirmed until Laura had her appear rising from the bathtub with Percy when Vax wanted to talk to Percy alone and then left. Its not required for the group's PCs to hookup with each other, but it does play into complicating the party dynamic between the PCs. Vex and Vax already have a deep relationship as siblings, so it makes sense that they would prioritize each other's safety, same goes with Pike and Grog.

The effect with the bleeding eyes is a hallmark of someone taking Necrotic Damage a magical element of dmg. the idea is they are bleeding internally
While I have always seen talking Necrotic Damage as actively decaying, the portrayal is good here.

Grog gets mad at that one dude that called Keyleth a b*tch, and called him a "dick-nose". Then Pike calms him, and says "Easy Grog, we don't waste our time on talking ass-holes."
the pairs are pretty clean vex is with percy, vax is with the elf girl, and the two little people sorry grog you are friendzoned, if you think about it he is too big for her anyway .... just saying ....
Eh, the Vex and Percy ship wasn't actually confirmed until Laura had her appear rising from the bathtub with Percy when Vax wanted to talk to Percy alone and then left.
Its not required for the group's PCs to hookup with each other, but it does play into complicating the party dynamic between the PCs. Vex and Vax already have a deep relationship as siblings, so it makes sense that they would prioritize each other's safety, same goes with Pike and Grog.
