  • How do you identify a Pedophile? Are we all narcissists to some extent? Is Amos Yee just a normal guy?

Dang as someone who studied psychology I feel so stressed for Dr Shawn, its really not easy to explain such difficult topics to people without a background in psych

John and Denise lost the plot on this topic. Pedos are sexualizing children. It is not about having consensual relationships. And in no way can adults form consensual relations with children because adults will manipulate the child into a relation. How can a 13/14 year old consent into a relationship with an adult? Even adults are manipulating each other into relationships.

Pedophilia is v different from LGBT, because children lack the physical, emotional abilities and experiences to be in a consensual INTIMATE relationship with adults. It's different for "high school sweethearts" where both in the relationship are at a similar stage of development.

People who cannot differentiate between paedophilia and homosexuality are actually scary because they don't seem to understand the concept of informed mutual consent.

My 2 cents as a psych grad. There is a clear line drawn between a pedophilic relationship and childhood "sweethearts".
A pedophilic relationship normally results from an imbalance of power, or perceived power; where the elder of the relationship has the mental capacity/development to be able to actively manipulate the younger party's thoughts/feelings/emotions toward the elder, especially in a way that is unnaturally beneficial to the elder party. Think of it as the younger party's feelings of worship, respect, or emotional reliance on the elder party, but purposely misconstrued/misrepresented by the elder party as "love". This is very dangerous, as the younger party normally has not reached the cognitive/emotional maturity to recognise the traps they are falling into. Hence, it is imperative that the younger party be absolutely protected in this case.
Conversely in the case of sweethearts, the balance of power is not skewed, because neither party is expected to have a cognitive/emotional advantage over the other party to cause such manipulation to occur (of course there may be some outliers, but then we would be talking about 1% of 1%). Thus, it is more acceptable (not completely okay, but more acceptable) for such feelings to develop, as there is no intent/motive for manipulation per se; and the feelings each party feels for the other is 'pure'. This is also why, relationships between minors get counselling and not criminal charges; because both parties might not know any better.
On Jon's point where it is a mental illness and hence should be discussed more, the govt has a duty of care to its citizens to isolate such threatening elements away from the population at-large. Given the clear and present threat to society pedophilia and pedophiliacs poses, even as we talk more about it not much will be changed to the current laws. We may just provide more treatment support to at-risk and offenders.

His upbringing has simply made him a narcissist, perceiving himself as someone whom has exceptional critical thinking than the masses, without realizing what common sense had left in his head. His mind is just full of "Why not" to challenge societal norms, but not all societal norms is refutable because there is no merit in any solutions to work around them.

When an adult befriend and form a good relationship with a child, can they argue that the child agree to leave with them (say a child kidnapper)? But the child genuinely likes this stranger! Its not about consensual or not. Below a certain age, children need to be protected.
I feel like so many things are really common sense but society nowadays starts to question everything, like "really? Does it have to be that way? Is it really like that?" just because we try to be tolerant, which in nature is not a bad thing. But has caused many to lose their sense of judgement. Like, we dont even know what is right anymore, or can we even say it is wrong when we think so. Will people judge us for being too rigid?
If someone has an anger issue, and uses that as an excuse to hurt others, the act of hurting is wrong and needs to be addressed. Likewise with pedophilia. Having such thoughts, may have arisen from past hurts like what the expert mentioned, is not a wrong thing or fault of the person. But is the person even recognising this problem and trying to seek therapy? Or just allowing the situation to cause him to act on his condition to possibly cause hurt on others?

Personally I think a person like Amos Yee shouldn’t be in Singapore as he’s a danger to society. But I also feel like he has pending charges in Singapore, committed a crime in Singapore and should come back to Singapore to be charged for what he did here too to uphold our own rule of law.

The concept of a defined age of consent is often considered arbitrary, yet a more suitable alternative is challenging to establish.
While it's true that some minors may possess the maturity to comprehend the implications and provide informed consent, conversely, some individuals who have reached the age of consent may lack this capacity. The ability to grant such consent isn't automatically conferred once someone reaches a specific age milestone, such as turning sixteen.
Given the practical impossibility of assessing every individual's readiness for each instance of sexual interaction, the establishment of an age of consent remains necessary, despite its inherently arbitrary nature.

Seriously, how can childhood lovers be used as comparison?
When both are of the same age. Pedo has always 1 adult and 1 child.
    This is a morality issue.
If you want to to comparison or analogy use a better one.
Seriously. All you need to do is ask yourself this question:
Will you as a parent allow your 12 year old to have sex with an adult? Even if your child tells you that she/he has given consent?
    SMH

Absolutely love TDK. The wit and humour. What got me hooked on the show wasn't just the jokes cracked but also the intellectual conservations. The hosts play the devil's advocate, giving a whole new range of perspectives.
However, there are topics that I feel should be accorded with more sensitivity and respect. It feels like the matter is being trivialised and is a special group of people we are trying to protect.
Still a fan and looking forward to the muttons episode!

underaged teenagers != children. it's not uncommon to be ATTRACTED to underaged teenagers (although it is WRONG from a consent standpoint) v.s. abnormal to be attracted to CHILDREN (pre puberty) in the first place. big difference. i thought this important distinction gets glossed over a lot (even in this convo). the doc even helped to clarify - pedophilia is for pre-pubescent kiddos below 12. whereas amos yee was with a 14 yo who presumably has gone through puberty, and this actually addresses JP's point about john chua and the 15 yo picture of his wife. the convo is a lot more nuanced that what got aired.
oh btw you guys might be interested to know that trigger warnings are actually part of woke virtue signaling cult practice rather than grounded in psychology - actually could have taken the opportunity to ask the doc about it hahah. it ranges from ineffective to detrimental to feeding narcissists who use it for attention seeking. it came up with social media woke culture, and in fact runs counter to current understanding on psychology (cuz you don't actually overcome trauma by avoiding everyday instances that come close to it).

"Should we defend pedophile"???!! Is that even a question any sane moral person would asked? Obviously there is something wrong to even ask this question. Children do not consent, period. They are not cognitively developed to consent, period.

Destiny: "You are arguing that all age of consent laws should be abolished, that a 2 or 3 year old could sufficiently engage in sexual activity with somebody who is 20 or 40 years old?"
Quote Amos Yee: "I would say sexual penetration perhaps, not until the age of 7, but sexual acts, definitely"
