    Graphics cards are notorious for overheating after a year or 2 of solid use. The constant heating and cooling of the compound causes it to eventually harden and crack leading to inefficient transfer of heat from the GPU to the heatsink.
    This tutorial will show you how to solve your overheating graphics card issues with minimal effort and cost.
    NVIDIA cards tend to be more notorious for the overheating issues, however no card is safe or immune from shoddy thermal paste!

    Great video. I did this same procedure to a friend's discarded HD 6870 about a year ago - it made a world of difference. (He gave me this card for free, believing it no longer worked.) In this card's case, the fan had also died - so I took the ghetto-tastic route of zip-tying a high-rpm 80mm fan to the plastic case. Noisy - but effective. Worked like a charm! It went from making horrible grinding noises (bad fan bearings), terrible performance, and dangerous temps (90+) to running like new. I saw temperature drops of over 30 degrees with the same load, and since the card no longer had to throttle just to keep from melting, my FPS jumped quite a lot as well. These days I'm running a newer card, but I still keep the little Frankenstein around to remind me what a difference a little human intervention and maintenance can make.

    My graphics card has overheating problems. It runs over 90° in normal circumstances, and regularly my computer screen will go black and the GPU fan starts to blow full throttle. I've been doing some research on how to fix that problem and I found your video. As it happens, my GPU is a 4 year old NVidia GTX580, the exact same featured in this video. This is the perfect guide I was looking for. Now I have to gather the supplies I need for the operation... wish me luck.

    • @drewb242
      @drewb242 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      ***** Im sure he just wanted to make a tutorial on how you might be able to fix a overheating graphics card and that was the oldest hottest running card he had. Even though 81c is within acceptable limits i wouldn't call it ideal.

    • @ShamblerDK
      @ShamblerDK 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vox Nihili Well, I've never seen a graphics card throttle or crash when it was around 80 degrees Celsius. Where I work, we had a card today, that hit 84 degrees celcius. Can't remember which one it was. A couple of weeks ago we have a GTX 780 SLI setup where the cards would max out at a 100 degrees Celsius. When it hits 90+, I get worried, but below that I'd not be worried at all. I don't even know what my own GTX 690 runs at. Hmmm, I should check.

    • @drewb242
      @drewb242 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** Neither have I but thats not the point. If you worry about longevity a card that never gets above 70c is generally going to last quite a bit longer than a card that runs at above 80c every time you put it under load. Not to mention artifacting which is much more likely to occur at those higher temps.

    • @ShamblerDK
      @ShamblerDK 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ϟ STORM ϟ All the new graphics cards, does run cooler. We've entered into a new age of electronics with extremely small manufacturing processes. This means that components will require less power and thus produce less heat. Furthermore, manufacturers are getting better at optimizing their electronics - giving you more "bang for the buck".

    I would love to,if u do a video about lowering the temperature of the video card. Fan curve undervolting etc. I've seen a lot of ur video and they are pretty nice,but i havent seen a video in big details about fan curve and undervolting. Keep the good job!

    Following the steps in the video got my EVGA GTX 660 SC load temps from 90c@70% fan speed to 75c@45% fan speed. In this video though he doesn't take all the necessary precautions, make sure to hold the GPU fan when using compressing air to remove the dust cause it can fuck up your bearings.

    I don't remember any time when my gpu was above 50C at full load.... It's sapphire amd r9 280x vaporx trix edition.. I think it's because of the vaporx cooling and 3 fans

    My GTX 770 FTW is a heat monster. I can't install anything above or below without it heating up more. I only see two options, either I install a fan on the case lid next to the GPU, or I get water blocks and do liquid cooling all around, which is not in my budget...

    When I apply thermal paste I do the original method "the blob," basically place a blob in the middle and press gpu back down. It will create a smooth surface and spread out evenly.

    0:49 you actually hold the spray upside down and spray fluid on the graphics card and you see a little drop going down on the right.

    another tip is to check the wattage recommendation on your psu based on the gpu's power requirement. I was running under and upreaded my psu and dropped 10 degrees!

    Great guide. I still have a gtx 980 wich suddenly runs at 94 degree (YES!)after 4 months usage. Will send it to manufacturer still have warranty. But i have tried literally everything. It is weird tho why the cards start act like that.

    I dont know if you'll remember @jayztwocents but were your gpu fans topping out? My rx580 (msi armor oc 8gb) can no longer handle too many particles on screen at once, smoke, fire etc, fans top out, gpu usage hit 102% at one point temps dont actually go over 70odds either, driving me nuts. System has crashed a couple of times, as soon as i rotate 180degrees away from effect/s fans slow down again but theyre definitely alot more sensitive! Bought the card used a couple of years ago and it worked fine intil a few weeks ago. Do you think this is a hardware issue more than a servicing issue? Thanks.

    I got one of those DataVacs and that thing is amazing. I clean my computer weekly or bi-weekly and it still blows chunks of dust out the the graphics card. They are a bit pricey but will eventually pay for themselves with the savings you get from not buying canned air.
