      Hi Jason. I will never forget you sharing with me how you survived a stroke at such a young age. You, my friend, are one of a kind and I feel fortunate to have met you in Birmingham. By the way, after you fixed the clicking on my bike I was good to go. Let's keep at it.

    dude, i really like your vids!! i would like to point out something. I was hit by a lady doing 70mph while riding my bike. the lord saved me. i was thrown 120 feet through the air and landed in the ditch. not even wearing a helmet.It did lots of damage to my glute area and low back. i wont get into all the damage, but i was in a lazy boy chair for 2 weeks. i was back in the weight room after 6 weeks, and back on the bike after 3 months. I hope and pray you never get hit!! with all the distracted drivers and texting going on, it really ups the annie on getting hit while riding!! I ride around 3 times a week in the city around my neiborhood . its a10 mile loop. I mean you are really taking a big risk out there. you are on the road most of the time. i really get scared when there is no shoulder. please be safe out there and i will keep you in my prayers. good luck!!

      Thank you. That's really kind oof you. Im sorry you had an accident. Yikes, I hear you about the dangers. I am aware of them and tell myself to be more conscious of my routes but I love all that traffic as well. I sort of gravitate to it and it is a bit sick but I love being the that hectic place where I have to keep hyper aware and powering thru it all. Somehow at the end of the day I feel fulfilled. But, you are right and I do work on mentally pushing away from traffic. It's also hard to do the country like I have without dealing with some of these roads. I also want to see places that might not be on the USBR maps and there are so many. I could go on and talk about letting go of fear but I get that that is all fine dandy until a lady runs you down going 70 mph and you end up damaged or even crippled. Then the rail trails will seem so much a better idea. Lastly, there are loads of great routes, especially inn the west that go on amazing roads the are virtually free of traffic. That is where my greatest draw is because of the mountains and climbing so it's likely I will be looking in that direction. But I have other ideas too, like Hawaii and that is not free of traffic. You see?, not easy. Thanks for sharing, it's great.

I usually would have kept that bit about Alabama for them but I thought it would be good to infiltrate some. Hopefully you guys won't think I'm too serious. • @FlyscoutRyder
      @FlyscoutRyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. It is definitely an all day ongoing process. It takes 1.5 hours of data to create 5 minutes of an episode. This happens every single day. 7 terabytes of 4K data for this last season. The shots you see are also a fraction of what I record. I end up not using most of it including countless drive bys and drone shots and all else. It's the nature of story telling with content. I actually love doing it. It's a blast for me and there are days that I am not feeling it but once I start at it I get all into it. By the end of the day I have it all to later tell the story of that day best I can. Thank you for watching.

    • @kiitc
      @kiitc 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FlyscoutRyder wow! That's crazy! I tried to record some of my biking adventures and the challenge is always taking time out of tiring experience and filming. How do you handle all that data? Do you carry hard drives? If yes how do you transfer data? Do you carry laptop as well?

    • @FlyscoutRyder
      @FlyscoutRyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kiitc To make up for the time I take to film I tend to ride as fast as I can which you can see me do for the most part. The other option would be to cover shorter distances but if I do that then I wouldn't be able to share with the viewer what an average day of bicycle touring is. The idea is to create the real expectation of what it entails. That's the channel's message in a nutshell.
      I do carry external solid state hard drives. Mostly 2 terabyte ones and at timers my lap top to transfer data but not as of lately. Lately, I have a friend keep my lap top and empty 2T SSD drives and when I fill up my cache of sd cards (about 24 of them totaling close to 2 TBs worth) I have him send the laptop and one SSD ahead of my route. Then I spend a whole day transferring SD's to SSD, clearing the SD cards and sending the laptop back. I always keep the full SSDs. But there is still a lot more logistics to it all. I would say that a huge part of being creative is to let yourself learn the process organically. I always have figured that if I learn it all on my own I will be better off at the end. It's taken four years of heart and soul doing this to find the intricacies of what it takes to make these videos. If you go out with this intention I would recommend trust in yourself too figure it out as you go. You'll do it if you really want to. When I left on my first tour and season 1 I had never flown a drone, used a GoPro, my Canon was a totally foreign machine, and I had never edited anything in my life. Actually, I hardly knew anything about touring either. The first episode "Deep South" from season 1 was my first ever. You just go and troubleshoot to your hearts content. It's very much parallel to bicycle touring. Keep me posted.

      True, but inevitable at times. I do my best to be safe and my channel in large part is an attempt at being a source to how best ride thru scenarios like it and any other imaginable in our country without getting hurt. After five crossings I think I have been in about all of the possibilities out there. Either way, getting hurt or dying can happen and every time you step outside that probability is there. Please be careful yourself and avoid 216 by all means 🙂 Thank you for watching.

    it's fun to follow along with you. You answered part of a question I had a few videos ago...the second part is...Do you edit your videos while on your cycle trip or when you get back home? Do you carry a laptop with you for video editing? Thanks.

    • @FlyscoutRyder
      @FlyscoutRyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Evan. To edit content like mine it is virtually impossible to do it on the road unless you stopped for at least five days to do one of these episodes. That's how long it takes me after doing this for four straight years. Every 1.5 hours of content gathered, which is about what I do each day on tour, ends up becoming about five minutes of an episode. I've tried it during season 2 and did travel with my lap top but it's unsustainable. Your question is kind of huge because it also brings the question of how to organize and store all the 7 terabytes, for example, that I collected on this last tour. How to have back ups, and so on. I've been asked to do a podcast for Warmshowers.org to explain, best I can, the whole process of how to gather the content, store data, TH-cam, and create the content. If it comes thru I will let you know when. What I can tell you is that it is a pipe dream I've taken seriously, like a business, for the last four years and to this day I have thrown insane amounts of heart and passion and even more capital to it, like savings. I've also omitted working for a big chunk of the year to spend time at it, especially in front of the computer. It's likely unsustainable but I have always dreamt big and I love the entire ordeal so we'll see if I grow or how long I survive, literally.

  • @princepage632

    hey dude, i was just curious, how much money does it cost you on a trans america tour like this one. and if you could please break down the elements. like lodging/ camping and food!! my guess is about 100 dollars a day. i mean i fill like you could do it on a thousand a month minimum. but in all likely hood more like 1200 a month.

    • @FlyscoutRyder
      @FlyscoutRyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      $100 a day would be plenty. A budget is very much relative. The things to consider are... 1. You have to eat regardless but maybe a bit more, or not. 2. How much money you are not making while taking the time off work. 3. What other activities (recreational, projects, etc) you would be doing if you weren't touring 4. Where you want to sleep which would also determine the routes you take. Some are just not easy to manage with safely camping where you'd like, private property. I don't break laws in my channel unless an emergency which you'll see me have to do here and there. 5. Not spending gas money. And so on.... You see, it's sort of hard to say. I would say $100 per day is plenty but you still have to be frugal. I tend to spend at times and then not at all to make up for the other days. My biggest issue is that I like to help out homeless folks so if any one asks me for money on the road I end up giving it and I also like to give tips to any service industry people. I believe that traveling across peoples home turfs is a privilege and giving back by spreading what you can towards them is a great way of saying thanks.

    Hey Diego, what was up with the clicking on front end? plus you only spent one day in Birmingham?

    • @FlyscoutRyder
      @FlyscoutRyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was a delaminating crank arm. Somehow I thought it would be fine to use a carbon one. Never again but lesson learned and warranty covered it. Tightening in Birmingham helped but as you will see it ended up coming back in Arkansas and had to get FSA to send me a replacement. All good. The guys in Arkansas were really cool but that's for another episode in the future.
      Yeah, one day there but maybe next time. It's tough to stop and spend time in all the destinations nations. I have the west to get to and winter is always threatening the high passes getting cut off. I love climbing high up. I also start later in the summer because I work into July.
      Thanks for asking and watching.
