  • The Molli "German: Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn or Mollibahn" is a narrow gauge (900 mm) steam operated railway in Mecklenburg, East Germany, operating between Bad Doberan, Heiligendamm and Kühlungsborn West. The line is 15.4 km long with trains taking around 40 minutes to complete the trip. An unusual feature of the line is the street running through Bad Doberan, followed by an attractive run through an avenue of Linden trees "Lime trees". The rest of the route is through pleasant rolling farmland and occasional seaside resort towns.
    Frederick Francis III, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg granted a licence for the construction and operation of a narrow gauge railway from Doberan station to Heiligendamm; constructed by Lenz & Co, the first section began operating on 9th July 1886, initially running during the summer season only, it was worked by a steam tram, the line was later classified as a light railway. The Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin nationalized the line and incorporated it into the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg Friedrich-Franz Railway on 13th March 1890. It was decided to extend the line as far as the Baltic seaside resort of Arendsee, this extension opened to traffic on 12th May 1910, by this time trains were running all year round. From 1st April 1920, it became part of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Goods were transported from 1910 until 1969 when goods services were withdrawn, due in part to narrow gauge transporter wagons used to piggyback standard gauge waggons on other narrow gauge railways being too large to run through the narrow streets of Bad Doberan. On 1st October 1995, an operating company, consisting of Bad Doberan district along with the towns of Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan, took over the line from the Deutsche Bahn.

    That was a lovely trip Tim - how clean the towns were and no graffiti to be seen. A friend of mine is a great traveller and he says that part of Germany is a hidden gem.

    That street in Bad Doberan was renamed to Molli Strasse in honour of the train, that street closest to the station. Yupp I've ride this train for some years ago.

      Hello Hans, thanks for the link you sent. The Molli is a genuine part of the local public transport infrastructure. I love that steam trains are used as proper public transport, not just a tourist attraction. I was smoked like a kipper by the end of the journey. 🍺 Tim.

    Thank you Tim for another fantastic video of a railway which I find incredible. In the year 2023 we see here a steam railway in a very prosperous country (Germany) which is most definitely NOT a heritage line, running all-year-round. Though entirely steam worked, it is part of the normal public transport system. Eg note two passengers who got on at Bad Doberan Stadtmitte just to travel to the main line station. They were probably going on to Rostock or Wismar.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed the ride. It's remarkable that these steam worked railways have survived and still operate year round scheduled passenger services in East Germany. This area is well worth a visit.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dieterkind Hello, I find it interesting that it was the political landscape that was in a large part responsible for these railways surviving long enough for far sighted local government to realise their potential both as tourist railways and as an integral part of the areas public transport system. It's sad that West Germany lost most of its narrow gauge railways. I don't think governments are popular anywhere in Europe at the moment; exporting manufacturing to the Far East and China was always going to have unfortunate consequences such as the loss of jobs, skills and a negative balance of trade.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dieterkind Thanks for the information about the West German narrow gauge railways, I am looking at various trips and rail tours for next year and one of them includes two narrow gauge railways in West Germany, I'll give it serious consideration.
      Electricity prices in the UK went through the roof a year or two ago, my company bill increased by 5 times with no government help and my home bill increased by 2.5 times with some government help, both bills have sttled down now with both being about double what I was paying before the energy crissis hit, here in the UK we have some nuclear energy, but no new power stations were constructed to replace the ones that became life expired. I live by the sea and the horizon over the sea looks like a spiders web of windmills, not a great sight and no power when there is no wind. The tide rises and falls by up to 6 metres, it is guarenteed, our forfathers built tide mills at the end of every tidal creek, today we create almost zero energy from the rise and fall of the sea. Polatitions look for quick fixes when what is needed is a long term solution, as for electric cars, we simply can't generate enough electricity to meet the UK government target to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars after 2030, the result will be that older petrol and diesel cars will become very valuable as people hang on to them. I'm glad you enjoy the videos, I'll continue posting videos most weeks for the forseeable future.

    That was brilliant. What a wonderful little railway. I love the rear view on the return trip. One question, does this steam locomotive burn coal or oil?

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video. From photos I've seen of locomotives on the railway I can't see any evidence of coal, but an internet search revealed this article that confirms that the locomotives are coal burners - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRG_Class_99.32

      Hello Robert, it's a fascinating railway original built to serve a series of holiday resorts and "yes" they are genuine cobblestone streets. I'll be packing my bags at the last moment because I've got a massive backlog of work to get through. Getting my visa for Oz was a breeze, but getting my NZ visitor visa is proving far more difficult, hopefully I'll get it in time. I'm looking forward my antipodean adventure. Cheers. Tim.
