Learn Japanese verb conjugation: The casual negative form NAI (ない形)

    じゃない is the negative of だ. But explaining why だ ("to be") turns into じゃない is a bit difficult, so only read this if you REALLY want to know ;-) First, you have to know that だ is the contracted form of である (which is still used in formal writing by the way). As you learned in this video, the negative of ある is ない. So the negative of である would be でない. But to emphasize the negation, we add a “contrastive WA”: でない turns into ではない. Finally, では is shortened into じゃ, so ではない becomes じゃない! Still alive? ^^

    Thank you so much for this video. I am studying Japanese 102B at university and they introduce these rules to us for the first time. When they explained them in class I didn't understand at all, but when I watched your video I understand the rules very easily. Your explanation is so clear. I also used to teach English for 9 years in China, I think a good teacher is one that can explain things so clearly. Thank you so much for this video, it helped me a lot!!!
