Since many commenters took issue with it, I removed "spoiler-free" from the video title. This review only elaborates on the film's setup and first 20 minutes of content, which I don't consider to be spoilers, but ultimately it's what you're all comfortable with seeing that matters. If anyone feels this will have an adverse effect on their movie-going experience, I apologize. Looking at your other feedback, it also seems like a lot of you would prefer pre-release reviews of movies like this to be shorter, more direct, and lighter on narrative context in general. In the event that I make another one, I'll keep that in mind, instead of trying to write in my usual style. I don't make videos like this often, and this is the first one I've done so far ahead of a film's release, so it's a learning experience for me, and I appreciate the feedback
The amount of trauma kazuma goes through. One moment he wants to fuck Yun-Yun, then given an opportunity to fuck a girl. He backs out. It's somewhat instant karma, but I will agree one part plain evil. Though the second truama when he is close to the the half demon how there is something pressing against his butt was pure comedic. As it's a funny anime trope of futas. Otherwise in non-hentai. How often do you see that?
Just watched the movie, was a riot and would definitely recommend! On the topic on the two aforementioned scenes, I wouldn't say the punchlines specifically have to do with transphobia or making fun of male rape victims. Maybe only on the surface level. When Kazuma nearly gets raped, it's funny because the guy who normally makes several other girls unconformable with his advances, party members included, is now on the receiving end of the stick. Not only that, but it's right after he had proclaimed it was his popular period. It's a scene where the irony is more of the punchline, rather than just "man gets raped funny lol." As for the second scene, Slyvia isn't even a trans. They're a chimera when mixed body parts. Even if Slyvia was a trans, Kazuma has every right to decline further advances if he's not into that kind of thing. Now for why it could be so traumatizing for him would more likely go to the fact that he nearly had another person's dick inside of him, a person who he willingly gave himself to before realizing that truth. But that's just what I think. I don't believe either of those jokes are sexist to the point of offensiveness.
Exactly 😂 I don’t discredit what Geoff said I understand his feelings towards it I just have a feeling he misunderstood the scenes. It was in no way a “ew look trans” situation and more of a “omg I almost took some hot chicks HUGE cock” situation. I fully support trans people and everyone else for that matter but I still don’t want that long shlong in my rectum 💀💀
@James Thomson agreed, i would also recommend this film to fans of the show. I really don't see the "transphobic" moment as Mother's Basement likes to put it as there was none. you can't have every moment when a person with both boobs and a dick that pokes the male protagonist and then being freaked out by it labeled as "transphobic" since i see that Kazuma is a straight (or CiS to those who like to use that phrase) guy that likes women, it's rational to believe he doesn't swing towards being gay or Bi by what we've seen in both the anime, manga and LN, and having a male organ being poked into his backside is going to freak him the hell out.
Unfortunately this is always an issue in MB’s videos. He either spoils way too much the anime he’s talking about or spoils an completely unrelated anime when making comparisons...it’s always a risky watch.
The creator of Konosuba is all about True Gender Equality, he didn’t just have dark humor targeting male rape jokes, he also made a joke about Megumin’s mom pimpin out her own daughter for Kazuma’s riches. So it kinds of balance it out, and it also makes your statement a bit off since you only notice the dark humor that targets men.
Yes, his critique is very shoe horned and left a bad taste in my mouth. It's the only reason I'm in the comment section to make sure I wasn't the only one.
@@clashwithkeen I fucking agree with the bad taste. As he is trying to appeal to people who only aim to score social brownie points and don't purchase any anime or support the industry in any sort of way. I want to support the anime industry, but fuck no to Crunchy Roll And Funimation. Funimation for basically making me result to piracy as an American for a completely uncensored version of Ishuzoku Reviewers. Crunchyroll trying to feature cartoons, basically killing the purpose to enjoy anime and Japanese content only.. Including tampering with dubs.
@@MaoRatto I agree for the most part, but to be fair, Ishuzoku Reviewers (which I've seen all of now, and was super funny) would damn near be akin to putting a softcore porno flick on Netflix. It would've caused a major fuss if they'd let episodes 5 onwards air on their platform. As much as *I* myself enjoyed Ishuzoku Reviewers, I realize why they dropped it.
@@cliffadams1795 I would consider Ishuzoku Reviewers a hard ecchi 90% through it, outside of episode 3. Funny thing is that it is a very "progressive" viewing show how meta it can get. A very sex positive show but funny and entertaining. I find that ishuzoku reviewers should be considered a hard ecchi or a very very softcore porn. No penetration is 100% visible. Though I know that Funimation has an anime dedicated to a yuri plot giving a mermaid an orgasm. >:X If that can be on the platform, why not Ishuzoku Reviewers. Then again I do like the lesson that Ishuzoku Reviewers taught about Simul Dubs... NEVER DO IT! I find it crazy the same people who complain about diversity, get a show like this and bitch about it for sexual appeal despite it has yuri, futa, corpse, scalies, furries, fucking fat, thin, and everything in between. Basically has more diversity than a diversity casted hollywood film, with ten times the quality. I honestly hope the anime does great and the manga gets a more panels. As I would love to see more of it. I am admitly a fan of ishuzoku reviewers due to the crudeness and honestly it is soooo meta.
@@cliffadams1795 Funimation's standards are hypocritical if they can have Yuri themed shows, high school dxd, prison school, shows with homosexuality, yet a show that is mostly straight with futas and lesbianism as side dishes does the same thing. It gets pulled off of the platform. Despite the same platform has a show with ass fighting and boob fighting. It makes you think real hard what is their standards.... An anime about making a mermaid having an orgasm is allowed which is basically yuri yet that Ishuzoku Reviewers has a similar amount of dirt with a tad more.
All of that stuff you said about the movie making fun of Kazuma for being traumatised by the attempted rape from the orc was literally your headcanon and not what happened in the movie at all. None of the three girls were laughing about it afterward, and crucially Aqua was genuinely consoling Kazuma which was a very rare scene indeed from her. Whether any person watching found it funny or not is entirely subjective but the fact is none of characters in the scene treated it as a joke whatsoever. I personally wasn't laughing but the amusing factor of the pervert who has sexually harassed women in the past now getting chased by lusting orcs during his "popular phase" was not lost on me, and I'm sure this is partly why the Kazuma was traumatised picture came in. Overall I think you were reading a lot into the scene and basically chose to interpret it in a really negative manner that wasn't really portrayed by the film itself. Dude... You're seriously reading too much into the Sylvia is a trap scene. Just because Kazuma expected her to be female but then is very troubled by the fact she has a dick while he's literally physically bound to her, you know, a demon chimera who could literally rape him if she chose to, isn't mean spirited at all. It's called sexual preferences and everyone is allowed to have them. Kazuma being traumatised by that is entirely his business. This wasn't a bad review, and I really appreciate your content in general you're a good TH-camr overall absolutely, but it seems like you must have watched the film only once and missed some pretty critical details of certain scenes which lead to you making negative assumptions about them.
delta_reg Honestly I’d say a review that spends the first half getting all protective and unnecessarily offended at 2 jokes of what I assume is a demographic he isn’t even a part of than spending the latter half going “oh yeah and it continues to be funny” a fairly bad review. All while While saying that he doesn’t consider 20 minutes of the plot from a 90-minute movie spoilers a bad review.
Thank you! I saw it twice in theaters and on TH-cam again earlier today and not once were the girls laughing at him. Throughout the chase they were scared and even afterwords none of them brought it up. Darkness was unusually worried about their trip, Aqua was legitimately consoling him, and Megumin tried to cheer him up by talking about YunYun's "tattoo". And even the joke with Sylvia was a quick one that didn't linger too much on it and quickly moved on after Kazuma's trauma. Kazuma never brings it up again after she lets go of him. And while yes he did kind of manipulate her at the end, at no point did he ever show any disgust for her because of her gender; rather he was more focused on saving Megumin's family and village. That was the reason why he was fighting her. I just think he got caught up in the moment that he ended up either recalling the scenes differently or was too distracted to focus on what else was happening.
Yeah I'm kinda disappointed in MB for missing how genuine the group's concern for Kasuma was, and how at no point in time did the group turn it into a joke. Doubly so for somehow inventing the delusion he did. Not to mention that he so easily glosses over the fact that Kasuma was sexually assaulted by a hermaphrodite, and says it's transphobic because Kasuma didn't want to be anally penetrated, suggesting that men can't possibly rescind consent at any point in time or dare to have sexual preferences of their own. Especially after going on his short lived tirade about the often comedic portrayal of male rape victims not five minutes earlier.
Uh buddy...you do know in the scene right after that, Aqua was letting him lie down on her lap and was ruffling his hair to console him, none of them were mocking him for it. Sure the scene is played for laughs but what isn't in this show. Also...is it really so wrong that Kazuma doesn't want to have a dick stuck in his body? Honestly, that was a pretty normal reaction.
I kinda agree there...Like they where all horrified of Kazuma's...adventure with the orks. The situation itself is played for laughs because this gang of idiots their vibrant personality is so extreme and funny. And with the dick thing. None of it was transphobic or the like it was mostly a "She's a trap?!" moment..Like it's QUITE a surprise y'know?
@@dudemetslagroom8065 It wasn't so much "she's a trap" as much as "She's a trap, really strong, currently aroused, squeezing Kazuma against herself and strongly insinuating that she wants to have intercourse and he couldn't stop it from happening even if he tried"
Shouldn't be since Kazutrash is a perv. The guy know's what he wants, like when they were surrounded by goblins he outed their location because he really wanted to know where YunYun's tattoo is. My man has priorities.
He wasn't criticizing the scene itself and Kazuma's reaction necessarily, but rather the way they put it on the same level as the attempted rape, with they seriously downplayed. Yes, the CHARACTERS comforted him after that, but the movie itself clearly didn't see it as that serious.
Having read the LN, I can say there's no spoilers in this review that 'actually matter' but I would still recommend not watching it if you want to enjoy the movie to the full extent
@@dagingerbreadman70 By highlighting that I read the LN, it backs up my claims. If I told you it had spoilers and didn't tell you I read the LN would you believe me? I didn't think so. And how is reading a book a flex, well maybe in your case i can see why that may be the case because you clearly lack the brain cells to do so.
Ok so I watched the movie immediately after season 2 as a quarantine binge, and it was really weird cause barely thought of it as a movie, I was just like "oop time to go watch the next episode" and when time has no meaning its really weird to finish an our and a half of that and go "wait, I just watched an entire movie and could barely tell the difference"
This review is basically "good movie, except these 2 scenes i will talk about in great detail that i highly dislike, but its still a good movie, except for those scenes, but u should still watch it, even though those scenes are sexist and transphobic, but still a good movie" Others have already pointed out how those scenes werent nearly as bad as they were made out to be, far better then i could, so i wont repeat it again here. it just doesnt sit well with me that half of this review was spent complaining about 2 scenes, while ignoring other arguable worse scenes & the rest of the movie, while saying its still worth the watch between repeated complaints.
Agree, his dislike with those two scenes annoy the entire review for me cause he spend so many time touching that subject. Both scenes were hilarious cause both of them were on context, and wtf was that of trans people? That's waaaaaaaaaaaay off. Something to complain about the movie is that the end of Sylvia wasn't the same as the light novel, cause that one is fucking amazing and hilarious lol and i can't believe wasnt like that but the end still was very good and funny to watch.
Dude, Kazuma being turned off by finding out a girl was actually a futa does not make him transphobic. It just means he doesnt swing that way and was traumatized by having a male member rubbing against him. Its not the same level as being nearly raped but its still a trauma to an extent when you are unable to escape due to tentacles holding you in place. Transphobic would mean that if he think they shouldn't be treated equally or wanting to commit hate crimes or stuff against them. Your sexual attraction not extending to a certain gender or something does not make you a hater of that group. Doing stuff like that trivializes the terribleness of ACTUAL transphobic people in the world and media. The review is pretty bad man, and this is coming from someone who has loved and parroted alot of reviews of yours when trying to get others into anime. But this, this shit is bad man.
@@benjamindetry3314 if I cut out half the review, then that remaining half would be good. But on a test, only getting half of it right would be a failure, so I apply the same logic here.
>Dude, Kazuma being turned off by finding out a girl was actually a futa does not make him transphobic. It just means he doesnt swing that way This has to be the most "Im not transphobic BUT" thing ever ...
@@andrashock6380 i felt like the joke was "kazuma was almost tricked by a woman with a benis and got raped haha" I know that Sylvia isn't trans but you have to remember that the movie doesn't exist in a vacuum and pulls ideas from the real world, with Japan being particularly guilty of painting LGBT people as predatory and even pedophile at times Even my fav anime suffers from this, as much as i love Leeron from gurren-lagann, he still goes on making sexual jokes around kids and the anime expects you to laugh at his advances on Kamina The very idea if Kazuma being tricked is what is transphobic. Sure everyone has their preferences but the movie goes out of it's way to make him get tricked just to make a rape joke, with it's only excuse being that Sylvia isn't human and thus our gender concepts don't apply to them, that simply doesnt't fly because people accuse trans people of being predatory in real life all the time lol

I mean, they've even joked about being able to have innapropriate dreams about underage girls. If they can joke about that then they can joke about these things too. People just have to understand that it's not serious.
Double standards are ridiculous in this review. Most of the humor on this show is sexual in nature, with stealing panties, underage characters, severely underage characters, kink shaming and more. Now you're somehow offended with the jokes in this movie? It's like watching Family Guy (TV) and then calling them out after watching one of their movies. Makes no sense.
Kaleo Mungin Yeah, like it is true that male sexual assault/rape victims are often trivialized, but this wasn’t really an example of that. The joke was that not only were the roles now flipped, but that this was right after exclaiming that it was his “popular phase”.
Ya. And the scene with him getting traumatized by Sylvia is genius because it's actually more psychological than the near rape scene in that instead of anything really happening he probably imagined himself getting pegged by Sylvia which for him was traumatizing. Everyone has their tastes and for him it was beyond horrific.
Not really, he didn’t even spoil about a certain japanese who made all this debacle, or a certain Chuunibyou who made that certain misunderstanding for Yunyun.
Honestly while watching the movie the rape jokes were extremely funny to me. I wasnt thinking about pop culture or modern issues with rape, i was just seeing it from the movie's perspective. I feel people take light hearted comedy such as konosuba way too seriously.
Man should’ve brought up how Megumin parents try to give her to kazuma and trap them in the same room but love this video and agree with all your statements
I laugh just because it was unexpected, of how they just animated like a super dramatic reveal, like when megumin sister makes jojoposes, the reaction of how Kazuma doesn't want to be drilled and how he deserved it in a way for wanting to leave the group
I agree with this, the jokes were freaking hilarious and I had no problem with them. If anyone is bothered by the chimera joke then they're just getting emotional and need to get their head out of the gutter. They said "chimera" what is a chimera people? (drops mic)
This movie packs everything great about Konosuba into 90 minutes. Honestly the fact that the movie is being bashed by those two jokes is pathetic to me. It's why I'm glad Japan has yet to bend the knee to the shitty "Oh you hurt my feelings, get canceled" culture in the US. Those were some of the best parts of the movie and every one who watched it with me, including myself, were dying of laughter.
Sylvia scared me as well. I really started laughing when kazuma trapped him/her in that dungeon and he/her started threatening to "poke" hard. Disgusting yet hilarious
He is just either being oversensitive because its a twitter worthy issue right now, or its overcorrection on his part, trying to show he isnt taking these serious topics easily. Either way its unnecessary here, good to know but unneccessary :D

"Sorry for going off on a tangent." After spending almost half of the video on these two scenes? When you made a point about wanting to include them because that's what some people will care about in what you made a point to say was a review? Remind me is this a review of the whole movie or two scenes?
To be fair there’s not that much to talk about in a review for the movie. It’s just a long Konosuba episode. If you like Konosuba you’ll like the movie, if not you won’t.
It sounded like nukes going off in the theater. Loved this movie. The theatre was half filled in Mississippi, so it did better than I expected here. Lots of hard laughs throughout from everyone in attendance.
I honestly think that no jokes should be off limits, so many people find so many different things funny and offensive, so at the end of the day, if we were to actually adjust media to not offend, we would have to have bland stories with no words spoken, and no visuals. P.S. I'm not saying you think these jokes shouldn't be allowed in Konosuba or other media, not even close, I just kind of felt like giving my thoughts, and hopefully I did so in a somewhat respectful manner.
DREAMSCAPE CINEMA Exactly what I was thinking. I just watched the movie earlier today and read a bunch of reviews saying how the humor is distasteful and offensive. You don’t have to find it funny but don’t ruin it for people that do
@@benpearson49 I'd agree that any humor from it is derived because it's at Kazuma's expense. At worst, the jokes can come off as uncomfortable (especially the female orc joke), but the main issue isn't really the jokes themselves. I'd say the main issue is that there's a group of Konosuba fans that tend to overlook the fact that Kazuma is a terrible person, in the same way that some Metal Gear fans think the franchise is free of "politics" or how some WH40K fans think its universe is showing off ideal forms of government. The number of "true gender equality" posts on r/animemes is proof enough of that. It sucks, because imo Sylvia was handled relatively well on her end, given how she made it clear that she had no romantic interest in Kazuma until he was pumped full of Charisma steroids. The creator can't really account for braindead portions of the fandom, making it harder for the rest of us.
@@lampad4549 On its own, nothing. However, Kazuma isn't using it because he believes in it, he's using it to get away with stuff he wouldn't be able to otherwise. Otherwise, he wouldn't make a habit of stealing women's underwear.
Ben "Yahtrzee" Croshaw has a wonderful thing on perfection that fits with how much those badly handled two things stick out. I am paraphrasing, I think, but ; "the closer you get to perfection, the more glaring the flaws become."
weren't those 2 things more a flaw of the light novel? or the anime is at fault for keeping those moments intact. or the film was doome from the start because had they adapted out those?, there would have been razzles about how they weren't loyal to the light novel
@@ianr.navahuber2195 I just watched it and it wasn't loyal anyways. There is a whole 20 minute thing that wasn't in the LN. But it was still a great movie.
@Ian R. Nava Huber Actually, I would say the anime is at fault because 1) the novel did not play the first point for laughs, and 2) the novel also did not try to equate the trauma of the second point to the trauma of the first point. Those were decisions of the anime, and while I wouldn't say the novel is completely blameless, it is certainly the anime's fault for needlessly magnifying those points.
Just got back from my local screening of this film, and I gotta say, it was pretty great. It had me, my friends, and pretty much the whole theater positively rolling in laughter for almost the entire runtime. Some jokes may not be for some people, but if you like Konosuba, you ought to know what you're in for at this point... Being that it runs as a continuation of the main story, you absolutely need to have watched the first two seasons and OVAs to know what the hell is going on, so people going in blind to this should mostly be a non-issue. Seriously, it's really fucking funny. If you like Konosuba, go watch it.
I appreciate the time you take to do things well. I hope it doesnt get toxic when you read the comments in order to be more aware of issues and cater better to your viewers. Great video. Thank you.
@@Alias_Anybody they did show an ad for the DVD before the movie that was dubbed (German). It wasn't long enough to say for sure but the voices didn't fit to great.
Wanted to wait to watch this review until I saw the move first and I just got back from the theater. It was completely worth the hour drive! I was laughing the entire time!
"Spoiler-free Review" - it is not in the least spoiler-free. Glad I've already read novel cuz I would have been really pissed for this. You say "spoiler-free" then go and basically explain the whole plot step by step.
I think that the second traumatic event isn't transphobic at all because kazuma is straight and he was tricked and scared but it was funny cuz he did it to himself, it wasn't disgust but shock
He wasn’t tricked. He made the assumption that Slyvia was a female and willingly embraced her because he thought she was hot. It wasn’t until he realized Slyvia was a chimeric amalgamation of animals and genders that he realized he was in as much trouble as his party felt for him at the get-go. She being trans isn’t what is funny. It’s the irony of the situation.
@@jprec5174 The fact that later on, once he had the time to get over the shock, Kazuma does willingly embrace her again pretty much proves that he isn't 'transphobic', but why would Geoff mention that little fact when it completely negates his entire argument, right?
- contains some spoilers - He's been an asshole to everyone but he gets along with them if the time comes like Vanir or Mitsurugi. It didn't feel like it's shaming Sylvia for being trans. She's still a respectable character especially in the chaos that is Konosuba. The fact still remains that she's hot, benevolent and a capable leader. She's not even human since she's technically chimera so that's just a setup like the orcs being rapists since no males are left or the crimson demons being chuuni for being overpowered or Darkness being sexually charged because she's a sheltered rich blonde or the more obvious one like Aqua coming from a higher race but dumb. About the orcs, we've seen Kazuma being a molester in the tv show so what's a rape joke really. There's even a grooming joke when Kazuma gave food to Komekko. People's outlook won't change much anyway. If people aren't willing to be open-minded, they'll believe whatever they want. That goes for people who wants to be offended as well. There's even people who find rape victims disgusting as a partner and I'll respect that if that makes both of us less uncomfortable since I'm a rape victim myself. It wasn't really offensive or at least hurtfully so. Of course this is just my opinion. I'm not trying to speak up for everybody here.
[e:LLUSIV ] Kazuma explicitly says that it's because Sylvia had a male organ - so it has nothing to do with her being a Chimera. And it's not just that one joke. The show takes that and basically says she deserves to die for wanting love in a non-normal way. It's what Kazuma uses to murder her at the end. How is that not terrible?
@@kylegreen6711 Again, I'm not shutting down the distasteful representation but this is Konosuba. You think the sexualization of the other characters are not? My point at the end is that Kazuma can be a sexist character but YOU don't have to be to enjoy a piece of entertainment. That's all it is, a piece of media and it's not an objectively a bad movie. We should reserve getting outrage to actual hateful agendas because it cheapens the whole thing. There's a lot of people out there that cry fake concern for women but have other thoughts inside their minds. So Sylvia is either an offensive character, just another character or a justification and whatever choice people took, that won't change. To why they wanted to kill her, wasn't that because she was waging war? She was still one of the Demon Generals, I don't think it would escalate that much if she just retreated. Beldia and Hans died because of that as well while Wiz was spared because she was disinterested in the war. Vanir is still alive because he's stronger than he's letting on.
That's how I feel about the whole series lol. The villains are sympathetic because most of them are sane and have normal demands like "Please stop blowing up my house" or "Give me my cat back, I even payed you and you kept the money!"
This is Konosuba. Being tasteless is pretty much standard. Sometimes it’s more tasteless (if that is how it is said) than others, but it really isn’t out of nowhere.
The movie, for what I see, uses the plot directly from the Light novel; the anime community complains a lot about non-canon stories on movies and shows. Well, now that's what you get: From the novel to your screen.
It was an awesome movie that's only blemished is that it couldn't cover everything in Volume 5 do to time constraints. Otherwise, I enjoyed both the creativeness of the ending battle and the general commitment to sticking with the source material. Any Konosuba fan that didn't get a chance to watch it, totally should 😉👍
I'm bigender myself and I still laughed at the second potentially offensive joke, but perhaps it was more a mix of 'yep, Kazuma continues to be a scumbag' and that they didn't dwell on it too long. It's not the best joke, but I didn't find the villain to be the absolute best villain, either...can a villain be summed up with the trope of 'satellite love interest'? Because that was what she was - I honestly don't remember much about her apart from her falling for Kazuma nigh-immediately and focusing in on that. Granted, this was a comedy movie, but you know. Taking that for what it is. The first one just seems like Kazuma getting a bit of a taste of his own medicine, considering before that he was jumping to go at Yunyun and he has an entire crisis about whether or not to jump at Megumin later. Not to say that that fully justifies it, but it at least proves that his 'popular phase' isn't entirely positive. If that's offensive, then I'd consider the fact that Megumin's mother basically sleep-drugs the entire party apart from Kazuma and leaves /her own daughter/ in a room with him alone at night entirely because Kazuma is rich far worse than that. (At least the orcs are killed. Megumin's mom? ....She doesn't even really get chewed out for that.) Again, however, I don't go to Konosuba for tasteful commentary. One of my friends described the series as 'Fantasy It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia', and I'd agree with that. All the characters are awful people and they do awful things. Don't aspire to be like them and don't take their views as absolute, because you /will/ find yourself in hot water if you do. But in the basis of the show, know that they're also seen....as awful people. So take that as you will. If you see one anime movie this year, in my completely bias opinion.....see Osomatsu-San the Movie. (I haven't seen Promare, and I don't really intend to until the hype goes down, lest my expectations get set too high.) But this is a close second best, and the screening I saw was lively as everything (which was surprising, bc I went to the second screening of the film and it was still packed). Good shit.
SPOILERS: As a LN reader, I was mostly fine with a lot of what they cut like the tranqulity girl, but there were some intimate details I wish they'd included like Kazuma finding the manga and games, more about the attractions there instead of just the montage, the crimson demons fucking with sylvia more by acting like they're losing before teleporting away, as well as Yunyun's popularity after her big moment. I also thought the whole Sylvia coming back to live with Verdia and Hans was very odd, but her loving kazuma was an interesting new idea, as well as Hans and Wiz showing up was interesting. Also thought it was good of them to include some details from the explosions spin-off that we'd be unlikely to get otherwise, but that really worked in the context here quite well. It almost felt like the movie expected you to be a LN reader to some extent, as some details have their explanations removed with the joke still there so LN readers can enjoy the reference but others don't get it. Like Megumin being called a Tsundere, when originally it was because she was worried for her sister instead of Yunyun, but for some reason it was changed to being worried for the village and having changed her mind so.... why is she a Tsundere in the movie? But all this is really my only complaints. They delivered jokes extremely well, kept the style of the anime well, did a great job of adapting it overall, just wish it could have been a tad longer in general.
Isn’t Tsundere just someone who decides not to show their true emotions? I don’t understand what the sister and YunYun stuff is about, but I don’t really see how it could make her a tsundere. I just thought they called her that because she acts like a tsundere, didn’t think it had to do with the situation.
I personally don’t mind those problematic jokes that are mentioned in this review. Now, that might just be because I’m a cis white male, but I have always taken the approach that things like rape or transphobia are NEVER funny, but JOKES about those subjects can be funny. I could be sitting in a restaurant one day, see a trans person get denied service for being trans, and Id stand up and tell the management team about the incident and offer to lend the trans person assistance if they wanted it. I would do this because I know it’s wrong to demean trans people for who they are! And I will always stand by them if they are in trouble. But at the same time, if there’s a joke about trans people, and the joke was intended to make me laugh about the subject, I’ll laugh if I find it funny. Not because I’m laughing at trans people, but because I’m laughing at the JOKE. And sure, that joke didn’t have to be said at all and there is plenty of other material out there that creatives can pull from, but I’d rather not stifle their process by limiting their tools. Granted: trans jokes are a BAD tool, but if they want to use it and it ends up poorly, that’s their (the comedians) fault. I swear: I’m saying all of this from a place of kindness and consideration. I don’t want anyone to ever feel unsafe or like they don’t belong. But I also want people to be able to know the difference between reality and a joke. One last time... RAPE and TRANS people are NOT funny. Jokes about those things CAN be funny.
I think the main problem with these two 'jokes' is that they punch down instead of up. When you make a rape joke if it has any chance of being a joke and not just the person telling it being disgusting you have to make fun of the rapist not the victim, punch up at the person with power not down at the person without power. Same with the transphobic shit later on. However even trying to show him as an asshole because of it will still fall flat an not really be funny, this set up isn't really a joke its just transphobic to its core.
LeoFinns Absolutely! I forgot to mention the “punching up” aspect of this kind of humor. You’re absolutely right about that! And I have a feeling the jokes in the movie are most likely punching down (I haven’t seen it, but Jeff says they’re like that). In which case, those jokes do need to be re-worked or just cast aside entirely. Long story short: I totally agree with your comment!!
Thank you for the review! And thank you also for detailing those less than tasteful jokes. I'm still looking forward to watching the movie cause I loved the series but knowing those things beforehand helps. Also, "If you only see one anime film this year... it should definitely be Promare" I didn't get the chance to 😭😭
Some people may complain about the jokes going “too far” or being “too traumatic” in certain aspects, but this is my favorite anime because they are actually willing to go that far and make jokes in all directions. As someone who has happened to have been traumatized, I like those jokes. We need to be able to smile, laugh, and move forward.
The 2 "Traumatizing" scenes are some of the funniest parts of that movie hands down. I won't let you change my viewpoint on that by taking your own spin on what you THOUGHT was the intended joke in those scenes. Ik what they were REALLY trying to joke about, and since i can take what you would call a JOKE, they are hilarious.
You’re not transphobic for being shocked that what you perceived was a woman turns out to be trans. People have their preferences. The joke is played as Kazuma being trash and being his typical misogynistic self and then having his expectations flipped on it’s head. Real transphobia is him being aware Sylvia was trans beforehand and then attacking her because of that fact and him being intolerant of it based on his own preconditioned prejudice rather than her just being a villain and being a general in the Devil King’s army. But typical liberal Geoff sees a sensitive issue and immediately resorts to white knighting 🙄
Kevin Mairena Yeah I would agree. If I was really into someone sexually and had been fondeling their tits for the last five minutes. Then found out they had a dick. I would be rather traumatized as I’m not into dicks. Especially if they start rubbing said dick against my ass and give me no way to escape. Which Sylvia does, and that’s kinda male rape again or Atleast molestation. So Geoff’s comment is absolutely bullshit. Hell Kazuma actually gets over the fact that she has a dick rather quickly after that. Especially when she mentions she has the skills of a succubus.
As a trans person these comments are so hard to read. Geoff's sensitivity around this kind of subject matter is one of the reasons I really appreciate him as a You-Tuber. I'm not moaning at anyone for their views on this film, but it does hurt to see the ridiculous amount of abuse being fired at him for addressing an issue that for many people it's important that it's addressed. Asking for viewer discretion around potentially distressing content is not censorship, it is not white knighting, and it isn't attacking those that like this film. It is certainly ironic however that people are so offended at someone asking for care around something that is potentially offensive.
Just rewatched this show recently! Just as good the second time through! Thanks for changing your title, I do think many prefer these sort of vids light on details
I died when he says, "If you watch any movie this year, you should watch Promare." That movie is amazing and I whole heartily agree but that was kinda cold ngl
I think that rape attempt was a parody/ reference to a Goblin Slayer or similar hentai/fantasy tropes that have a female character raped by monsters and don't treat it with any dignity or seriousness.
Sylvia isn't a trans tho, they're a Chimera. They have both boy and girl parts, and thus Sylvia isn't trans (Sylvia wasn't born a girl, they were born a Chimera with both parts). You can't be transphobic if the character isn't even trans.

@@shoobzy3431 i found the orcs hilarious i see the problem but idc its funny to me

It's a scene where the irony is more of the punchline, rather than just "man gets raped funny lol."
As for the second scene, Slyvia isn't even a trans.
James Thomson yeah that was such a face slap, how can something be transphobic when the thing is a literally fantasy drawing.
It’s a lesson. Don’t be trappin, ya nasties!
Yeah I agree with you on the orc scene, how can you miss the irony and think the joke is just "lol kazuma almost got raped."
I kinda felt bad when Megumin's parents would literally sell her for money

Uhhh group concern means nothing if rape is played for laugh
@@McSnezzly It's ok because Kazuma's a guy
Yea that whole bit was a cringe fest. Transphobic is thrown around too much
He wasn't criticizing the scene itself and Kazuma's reaction necessarily, but rather the way they put it on the same level as the attempted rape, with they seriously downplayed. Yes, the CHARACTERS comforted him after that, but the movie itself clearly didn't see it as that serious.

I like really inappropriate humor
I laugh just because it was unexpected, of how they just animated like a super dramatic reveal, like when megumin sister makes jojoposes, the reaction of how Kazuma doesn't want to be drilled and how he deserved it in a way for wanting to leave the group
I agree with this, the jokes were freaking hilarious and I had no problem with them. If anyone is bothered by the chimera joke then they're just getting emotional and need to get their head out of the gutter. They said "chimera" what is a chimera people? (drops mic)

To be fair there’s not that much to talk about in a review for the movie. It’s just a long Konosuba episode. If you like Konosuba you’ll like the movie, if not you won’t.
Dudd you do not understand what a spoiler free review is
It sounded like nukes going off in the theater.
@@garbouwdeark9103 what's wrong with gender equality?

- contains some spoilers -
He's been an asshole to everyone but he gets along with them if the time comes like Vanir or Mitsurugi.
I’m miffed that they didn’t add the tranquil girl scene. And I now feel really bad for Sylvia.
That's how I feel about the whole series lol. The villains are sympathetic because most of them are sane and have normal demands like "Please stop blowing up my house" or "Give me my cat back, I even payed you and you kept the money!"
I think the whole megumin wants to fuck Kazuma thingie was brought on a bit too suddenly

Sooo pumped for this movie. Probably my favorite arc in the light novel, can’t wait to see it animated!

@@pyromania1018
That would have been a real laugh had they kept that, especially since it does get brought up in the story again down the line
Megumin's mom? ....She doesn't even really get chewed out for that.)
Again, however, I don't go to Konosuba for tasteful commentary.
Good shit.
nigga, what the fuck is a bigender??? You just made it up on the spot. People with there made UP genders, fucking hell.
Bigender. Bi=two. Two genders. You are two genders at once? That's rad. I don't know how that's possible but I don't care. It's magical.
I hate how they cut off the 3rd night or Megumin's confession that she likes Kazuma was cut off.
"I read the comments so I know most of you guys dont mind, but.. well.. i read the comments.."
Say no more Basement
SPOILERS:
As a LN reader, I was mostly fine with a lot of what they cut like the tranqulity girl, but there were some intimate details I wish they'd included like Kazuma finding the manga and games, more about the attractions there instead of just the montage, the crimson demons fucking with sylvia more by acting like they're losing before teleporting away, as well as Yunyun's popularity after her big moment.
I agree with you and also didn't like how they cut the campfire scene near the beginning and some of the other kazuma and megumin scenes
Isn’t Tsundere just someone who decides not to show their true emotions? I don’t understand what the sister and YunYun stuff is about, but I don’t really see how it could make her a tsundere. I just thought they called her that because she acts like a tsundere, didn’t think it had to do with the situation.
I liked Aqua and Kazuma’s dynamic in this film like the lap pillow was nice
Imagine if konosuba got a Netflix adaptation. That would be...

This movie had me dying with that Kazumin scenes and that Sylvia scene

Also, "If you only see one anime film this year... it should definitely be Promare" I didn't get the chance to 😭😭
This is one of the best animes ever. Literally the series is an abridged series in it of itself.
I really hope we get more of Sylvia-sama and her demon army. I love her!
The film just got added to Crunchyroll today (March 25th 2020). Its fantastic.
Most of the budget went into the hand holding scene
4:15 oh I need you volume 6 to be animated. Kazuma will show everyone how cool he can be...
