The Danmachi light novels are AMAZING, very addictive writing style, well written fight scenes, descriptive enough do get your imagination going, no drawn out exposition. The character relations are very unique; human, demi-humans, gods, monsters, etc all have believable back stories and history. It even tackles subjects like a gods love affair with mortals. I highly recommend reading the LNs, they are seriously good
Hazel The light novels are good. The author does know how to write out a fight scene and describe intense events that makes you savor every word. but the LN still suffers from heavy plot armor, Deus Ex machinama, poor character development since Bell doesn’t start that til Volume 12, and world concepts like magic that have not been completely explained where the author had to break some of his own rules to move the plot along. SO is good but it starts to slowly suffer in later volumes, I agree that spin off anime was trash but SO isn’t any better. (Trust me when you read SO volume 12 because I was angry when I finished reading it). I do like the series! I really do but if the author fixes some tropes and improve on character writing then he would’ve written best LN series of the decade.

I personally think Klein and his guild deserve their own spinoff series all about their time in SAO. I mean come on, they survived two years of floor clearing with no casualties. They were epic tier S class badasses, man.
I like that SAO Abridged HEAVYILY lampshades his and his guild being overshadowed by Kirito, though heavily imply that he and his guild had a lot more happen to them without Kirito we're just not treated to seeing it...due to Kirito being the focus. Which really is the core issue with the series, when your MC is hallow and you make everything revolve around him to such an insane degree it drags everything else down despite a lot of stuff outside the MC being good or having the potential to be good if it wasn't constantly being robbed of any focus by said MC.
I always thought that Klein's role was weird, the show treats him as Kirito's loyal best friend from SAO despite the fact they only interacted a couple times before they escaped the game. Klein spent most of his time with his guild but we never find out anything about them or how close he was to them. I'm sure Klein is Kirito's SAO best friend because Kirito was a loner, but I heavily doubt Kirito was KLEIN'S best friend 😂 But the show after SAO keeps pretending he is

@@zoeb3573 What do you mean? Klein is a good friend of Kirito’s, but I’d say that Agil is in the same boat. If anyone was Kirito’s best and closest friend, it was Eugeo. Heck, both were brother in arms and fought side by side. It also helps that Eugeo was closer in age to him, compared to Klein and Agil, who are adults. So when you say that the show tries to pretend that Klein is his loyal best friend, I just never got that impression from the anime at all. If anything, he’s very clearly a side character and has always been.

Bell is an epitome of talent meets hard work while Kirito is walking cheat code. Bell is young and naive but he’s growing as person, the only thing Kirito is growing is the size of his harem
But Kirito only has eyes for Asuna, and his feelings have been acted upon , but with Bell, his feelings for Aiz are never shown, plus he allows himself to be put ,in intimate, situations at times, without saying anything.
To be fair, both are still cheats of their worlds. In Bell’s world the most prodigal person, the blonde girl, made it to rank 6(?) (might be 5) within a few years as an all time record. Bell is on track to reach that rank in half her time. He is also the only person in the entire world to be able to punch up ranks. Why is this? It’s because when most people rank up they rank up with their highest stat being around A and then they all reset to something like E after they rank up. This is because they level so slowly at that point it’s impossible to get S or SS, it’s just a way better use of time to rank up. Bell on the other hand will consistently get S and SS on all of his stats before he ranks up (remember he ranks up faster than anyone else too), allowing him to not only speed run ranking up but he’ll always have more stats than anyone his rank and can fight people a rank above him. By all margins this is a cheat.
To be fair, Kirito is a bigger cheat than Bell for obvious reasons. That’s doesn’t mean Bell isn’t one as well. His experience bonus is ridiculous and so is his “motivation ability” that allows him to supercharge attacks

I love Danmachi not because of Bell's harem or his fights not even bell. To me bell is just a medium to explore the vast world of Danmachi rich in lore and mystery of the gods, the dungeon, the upper relm and the lower, the story of the characters it is made of and the story they will make together. Honestly the thing that made me fall in love with the series is the speach that Hermes gave at the end of the first season. That speech made it clear that this world that they live in is complicated mysterious and most importantly grand, full of things for the characters to explore. Just thinking about how the world itself will unravel made my heart race and hairs of my body to rise up in excitement

Danmachi's season 4 just finished, and since this season was pretty much all dungeon, the rom/com elements (especially the com side) went WAY down temporarily. Super action-packed season with tons of epic moments and epic monsters where the outcomes were in doubt, arguably its best work on some levels. Watching this reminded me that it wasn't always like this, and now I'm wondering where it goes from here.

I mean, I would argue that SAO isn't an isekai either but sure.
@@gokbay3057 you're right in that it's not what we've come to expect from an isekai, but it did codify a lot of isekai tropes. Sort of a proto-isekai, if you will. At least in the first part, people do find themselves stuck in another world, if only mentally, and I guess alicization, at least what I've heard from Goeff's vids, goes back in that direction somewhat.

The Harem aspect is not really the main aspect of the show, mostly the dungeon labyrinth and the fights. And the author strongly stated it's not a harem in the end, as he stated the only ship for Bell that would end up is Aiz. And his power up isn't just some ass pull. It's based on his strive, and determination for him to be on the same level as Aiz. And it's a lot more darker than what the show shows it to be.
I dunno fam, if the only explanation for a character's powerup is that "they're really determined" that sounds like an ass pull.
I have no experience with the other formats its been released in, but from what I've seen of the anime, its highly geared and portrayed as a super powerfantasy harem anime where Jesus-kun main protagonist works super hard and gets all the girls but don't worry its not a harem because he only has eyes for this one girl.
The fact they reveal that he's related to Zeus practically destroys any depth Bell as a character could've had. Theres some charm to the idea of a character who uses sheer grit and determination to stand among the near godlike heroes and monsters surrounding him. But when day one it turns out he already has a super special skill that lets him grow faster and then also he has divine blood in him, like that whole underdog aspect is just moot. Heck the fact they gave him whats practically a deus ex machina "I can unleash my super awesome mega attack whenever the plot demands it" power is just kinda hilarious.
Don't get me wrong the anime is fun brain junk food, but lets not act like it isn't geared towards people who want to insert themselves into the main character and fawn over their favorite waifu.

One thing I like about the Danmachi series is that not every single female character is in love with Bell. Ryuu and Mikoto just see's him as a good friend , the girls in Loki familia think he's interesting due to his rapid growth, the Ishtar familia were only interested in one *ahem* specific area of Bell due to their profession. And all the goddesses minus Freya and Hestia chase him because he's an interesting/cute mortal to mess with or more specifically probably just to mess with Hestia. In short the only girls who truly are in love with Bell are those who have spent long periods of time with him like Hestia and Lily who Bell has helped and saved them from not only external threats but their own personal demons.

*Thank you!* I love Danmachi, and a million times, I've heard people call Bell a blank-slate protagonist. It's so nice to finally see someone acknowledge his personality. As well as the series as a whole.
Though, I will say, season 2 felt a bit like a train wreck. Not to say it was *bad,* but. As someone following the LN's, I couldn't help but be irritated by how much content got cut. Mooost of volume 8 got entirely skipped -- and there were a lot of moments for fleshing out various characters in that.
But you agree the character slates for Sao and Dan are very similar but then again that is the most slates for everyone
Vgy1592 I love danmachi as well. I’m trying to get through the light novels now so I can’t speak on if season 2 was a train wreck. But I’ll say I’ve enjoyed it for what it is, but I’m definitely trying to get through the novels to understand the characters better.

Bell actually had struggles and flaws. There were moments where you genuinely wondered how he could possibly win a fight. Moments where you cared about the characters, and what would happen to them. There's none of that in SAO. Kirito virtually never struggles. He's a near perfect person you always know is going to win a fight, thus destroying any kind of tension. Kirito is a terribly written character, in a show filled to the brim with them; where nothing ever matters, and every outcome is a given from the start. Danmachi is full of entertaining characters you want to root for, and that are entertaining to watch. Hell, I think Bell is actually a pretty good role-model! He's kind, empathetic, helpful, and tries his hardest no matter what. Danmachi might not have some epic story, where a bunch of memorable stuff happens, but at least it's a fun ride with likable characters. Specifically, Hestia, who will always be: The Bestia.
What do you think now? I got pulled back in by how Monsters are shown becoming sentient sometimes. Bell’s heroism was turned into an actual hard choice!
Besides that, I disagree with Geoff’s take that Bell’s desire to become a hero is secondary to getting with Aiz. Becoming stronger and then eventually as strong as Aiz is Bell’s method to try to be with Aiz. Becoming a Hero is something Bell always sort of wanted to become, only truly brought up in his mind during his fight with the Minotaur(that wasn’t Asterius yet). Otherwise, Bell would only be a nicer Bete. That would be boring.

@arch btw oh that? That was actually just incarnation. It's a unique feature of the system in SAO that was later fleshed out in Alicization. Heck Asuna was the one to use it first before Kirito (when she saved him from Kuradeel). Could link you to an explanation if you'd like.

Danmachi is my current favorite light novel series and it makes me so happy to see people enjoying it. There is something magical about seeing a series you have been following since day one be enjoyed by a large number of people. It really is a shame the series wasn't called Familia Myth like it was originally supposed to be titled, i genuinely think a large amount of criticism stems from the misunderstanding of looking at the title at face value. It makes the series seem a lot more tasteless than it actually is. Contrary to first impressions Danmachi is NOT a guide to picking up girls in a dungeon, in fact the harem aspects are pretty benign. It helps that Bell only has "eyes" for "Ais" while anyone else unfortunate enough to have a crush on him is relegated to friend zone, little sister zone, older sister zone, daughter zone, goddess zone, or some other nonromantic relationship (meaningless internet points for the people who know who fits into which category. At it's core Danmachi is less about the harem and more of a pure shounen, with a main character who pursues strength and develops from hardship and the people he meets along the way. If the title was as it should have been instead of the current title I think it would have been received much more positively. People would compare it more to naruto or fairy tail instead of isekai smartphone and SAO. It has much more in common with the former than the latter. That said it is still not revolutionary even as a shounen, but like My hero academia it does shounen tropes well i think.

Isekai have its on genre now, not all "fantasy" is a "isekai"
It's easy to lump DanMachi into Isekai anime because of how its world sort of operates on video game rules, but it's certainly missing that crucial element of ANYONE ACTUALLY BEING TRANSPORTED TO ANOTHER WORLD

This anime just brought up a legit reason for the harem thing. Wenn Bell is stalked by love godesses, they could easily male every girl fall for Bell because they are shippers and want their otp come true. And yes, that's the purpose of a love godess in myths
I genuinely love this show, from the first time I viewed season 1, I was anxiously awaiting 2, sometimes I would just watch reviews of the light novel to pass the time, or look up the ost (really nice tavern theme imo). Danmachi means a lot to me, and I'm glad you were able to voice some of the things I usually scream at the screen in the anime's small amount of reviews. Thank you.
TheBlandCharlie I think you should really read the light novels from the end of season 1 onwards. I watched season one before season 2 had been announced and then read the light novels from that point. I loved them. Then season 2 came and I was really disappointed. The skip so much and even the fights just don’t have the same gravity they have in the light novels.
Aliensinnoh I kinda have to disagree with you there. I also have read the light novels of DanMachi and I thought that season was pretty good in both story telling and action scenes. They did skip a lot of content in volume 8 which i hope they turn into an OVA.

It does have some ups and downs, but make it to episode 8 or 9. That is where it shines finishing a growth arc.
A week or two ago I mentioned Danmachi in a discord server, and the first thing someone did was compare it to SAO. That just kind of irked me, because I didn't think the shows were so similar that it warranted a comparison right off the bat when I hadn't even mentioned SAO in the first place. I can never compare both Kirito to Bell. To me they are completely different characters. What happens around them doesn’t change my mind when comparing characters.

Bell has his own personality which is why to me it’s difficult to compare him to anyone.
Though something I like about Bell is that it feels like he earns his abilities. I believe without the cheat he would have been stronger but take more time. They basically speed it up his progress but he still trains and practices after that. He also didn’t get his EXP skill from Zeus but from his own feelings and determinations. The magic of fireball was lucky but even I get luck in games so to me it makes sense as long as everything he gains isn’t from luck.

And I kinda love that his cheat ability is a manifestation of his respect, adoration, and love for Aiz. Which makes me feel that, yeah if he didn't have that ability, he'd still have the drive to improve himself. So that he could stand along side her

They spin an action series with romcom undertones into a romcom with action undertones. It deserves the 7 and 8 out of 10 the anime seasons got on MAL, but disappointing directorial choices and budget issues keep it from being the truly amazing series it is in the novels

I know I'm a bit late for this, but I just wanted to say I appreciated your effort and time put into this video, considering (as you mentioned) Danmachi aired about 5 years ago. My brother started the show recently and was trying to get me to watch it, but I wasn't entirely sold on the concept seeing as I don't care for the harem genre. So I was glad to find a video expressing your thoughts on the show, as it gave me a concise and concrete reason to give it a shot.
Enjoyed the video but do have one comment; I’ve found the light novels of Danmachi have a higher focus on the battle and dungeon crawling aspect than the anime does; not that they don’t also have the character aspect you praised and quite a bit of it, I just feel the anime chooses more often to cut or trim more expensive to animate action scenes than cheaper to animate character moments that gives a greater emphasis to the slice of life aspects in the anime than they have in the books, for better or worse.

As someone who has read the Light Novels, I can also tell you this series has a fucking great Rivalry, part of which the anime has already experienced but we won't get to fully for a while. I'm only watching the anime to see it.

JimKandol I’m praying that Danmachi keeps getting love so we get more seasons. The Xenos Arc is hands down the best arc in the series, and if that can get animated, I’d be able to die with no regrets.
I have seen the first season and was disappointed. I'm not romcom guy, characters where not the brightest and you could really notice that they tried to cramp as many volumes as possible in 12 episodes. It felt really rushed.
I don't know if I would like the Light Novel. I usually like my characters less naive.
@@PacMonster0 Actual Fucking Spoilers. If you missed it, the Minotaur left Bell alive so they could have a final match down the line. Its a Rivalry, a pure one. How do you not understand? Bell even got a skill to make him stronger against Minotaurs. Its an encounter so fated I wouldn't be surprised if the series ended on it.
Just as you say Kirito being so op in everything he does and him and all his friends having plot armour. Belle actually has to work to gain the experience necessary to overcome his obsticalls. I personally atribute Belle skills at getting girls to fall for him is a side effect to being related to Zeus. Plus being genuinely kind and caring to everyone he meets.

bell is one of the EXTREMELY rare fantasy/harem protagonists who actually, like, has a design, and that makes him considerably appealing to girls as well
2015 was my first year of really being into anime and Danmachi came out during that time, it was one of the first I watched and I loved it. I watched quite a few different anime during that time, but just stopped until about a month ago now. I rewatched Danmachi and then the movie and then season 2, I really enjoyed it. It makes me happy to still see people talking about it because I haven't heard anything about it for years now. I very much enjoyed the video and the arguments are all solid, even though I'm months late.

What? SAO was written the same time as .hack//SIGN, so unless you can tell me that Oomori Fujino already wrote Danmachi Volume 1 before 2002 this is hilariously uninformed.
And if you are talking about the light novels, the SAO light novels came out a full 4 years before the Danmachi volume 1 even came out.
AK-31 true the 1st sao was written in early 2000’s for a contest but it was never released do to it being to long for the content

@@crh1985 It was released since Kawahara published it as his web novel on his website under the penname Kunori Fumio. He even published a few stories during doujin events as the Material Editions. The SAO light novels itself was published in 2009.
Accel World was him winning the grand Prize for the contest and getting published. Even before that, Accel World had its own Web Novel too with their own outdated very early 2000s character designs.
Both series are way older than people think. And fun fact, .hack//SIGN and SAO came out way before World of Warcraft came out

I recommend danmachi light novels,they are really amazing. Anime has not really done it full justice especially the second season.
The thing which differs it,is the author. His writing is amazing,the way he writes the fights, interaction between characters , bell's characters development,etc ,is very very good.

@@emiledlund9559 Matsuoka Yoshitsugu is the go to voice actor when it comes to light novels and harem anime. He said in an interview that there is so much work that he can't keep up with it, because he's really a good voice actor with a large fanbase.

Pretty much just constant yuri fantasies from Lefiya towards Ais while we learn pretty much nothing new about Ais or anything.
@@BlazingInferno00 Simply put, it takes the amazing story of Sword Oratoria and tears it apart. It changes Lefiya, one of the MC's, into a horrible annoying asshole. In the light novel, Lefiya is one of my favorite Danmachi characters. That just goes to show how an anime studio can ruin a character.
Every character is dumbed down horribly, and all of their development and complexity is taken away. The pacing is bad, and so many good scenes are taken away or badly adapted.
The fight scenes are also lessened severely, and the season ends right before one of the best parts in the entirety of the early volumes.
Only watch it if you want to after reading the light novels, for the few scenes that they actually did okay.

personally i think that the premise of danmachi changes as the series goes on. the character grows and changes and by the end of season 3 or book 11, bell has another large and important driving premise., i think that it just gets better because the side characters and side stories that flesh out the series and make the main character just better. i think that the series needs to get better in the way the characters like Hestia treat bell but knit picks.

Season 4 has really ramped it up to show the distinction between SAO and Danmachi. Bell ACTUALLY has to face situations that you can't even imagine them surviving, and when he survives, it's due to sacrifices on his part, will to live, ingenuity and hard work. AND EVEN THEN THE REAL MAIN CHARACTER WAS RYU, AND SHE WAS THE ONE WHO CLINCHED THE WIN. And they all survived due to the connections Bell and his guild members forged through the 4 seasons! This isn't a OP protagonist which the world revolves around. They are a protagonist because they live in the world, uplift people, and those people in turn uplift him on his path to be the best.
Honestly, I feel like the naming of the title did the entire series dirty by creating the image of a typical wish-fulfillment harem anime, when there was so much more to it and its clever world-building.

edit: to put it in perspective sao stans took screenshots from konosuba's more elastic and bouncy animation style and used it as proof as to why sao was better because the characters were more on model during motion in sao and just accused konosuba as being "badly drawn" or having terrible animation

There are a lot of people who think all isekai is like SAO. I'm not going to argue that SAO wasn't a large factor in why isekai adaptations are so popular these days, but even if isekai isn't technically its own genre I think lumping them all into one group with a generally negative connotation is pretty inaccurate.
I've been reading the comments, sadly there are. Apparently, the term Fantasy has been forgotten about by many.

atm isekai is just basically fantasy fanfiction where the authors self insert a shitty protagonist to just carry out a power fantasy and people gobble that shit up; strictly fantasy series always seem to be able to carry their own weight so long as they're not some sort of videogame rpg tie-in, which is a trend derivative of isekai without the other world element but still shares a lot of similarities with the genre.
stuff like made in abyss, houseki no kuni, vinland saga and berserk are great fantasy series and they have nothing in common with isekai tropes so it's just practical to separate the two into different genres.
There is another important aspect: In S2 and S3, Bell wouldn't have been able to succeed in the overall situation without the help of very powerful fractions in the background. In contrast, Kirito resolves the problems almost always entirely by himself.
What about SAO alicization ? Didn't he need help from the other players ?
