BMW M135i Review - Is this still an epic hot hatch?

- Every now and then, a test car arrives at the office and divides opinion among the Cars.co.za journalists. This is not one of those times.
With the new BMW M135i, BMW have removed all the character traits that made the M140i so special. Six cylinder engine? Cheers. Rear wheel drive? Also gone. So this is now an all-wheel-drive, 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder hatchback. So, it's basically a Golf R?

Disagree. I owned about 20 six inlines from BMW. Defenitely a great engine. But now i bought the F40 M135i. I really love it. The looks are so much better than the previous 1-series. Also the interior is so much better and modern.
I like the x-drive and don't miss the rear wheel drive.
I love the new 1-series.
Never mentioned the grill once. Fair play mate, fair play ;)

I don't mind a 2.0L on a BMW M135i, they should maybe make all their M performance cars top speed to 290km/h

I test drove one and loved it. BMW's take on the Golf R but with more tech and a better driving position.
TBH we've never had it so good. Lots of well built 300 hp AWD cars to choose from, they won't rust or break and you can drive for hours in comfort.
I remember when Ford sold cars with an odometer that would only reach 99k, cause they would'nt last that long!
The rust would eat them alive and the enginges would throw a rod at 80k. I had a '88 Fiesta XR2 and I have fond memories of it but essentially it was a terrible car, only 7 years old when it succumed to the red rot and had to be scrapped, not to mention leathal in a crash.
Yea this M135i might not be the most exiting car to hustle down a twisty B road but if thats your bag get a Type R, of even a Lotus.
I am really enjoying the car industry's output right now because very soon we'll all be humming around in an EV.
Ciro, I just have to say your car reviews are very superior to many reviewers out there as you combine informative with entertainment as well as throwing in some jokes here in there! Plus the camera work is phenominal !

@@njabuloprince6483 you must check whether they are in good condition. Once my friend bought a 2nd hand cabriolet M240 at a BMW dealership only to find that it was involved in an accident and they never disclosed that to him. He took it back to them and left it on their floor.
@@pakowame4737 Why is that a problem though? Did it have an effect on the cars function?
@@keyzprogression4539 the problem is the "reputable" BMW dealership was not transparent. As to whether the car had problems or not, one needs to know on what are you spending your money on, and how much. Remember we work for this money so you need to spend it or invest it wisely.

Imagine living with this car, every car’s and coffee, every owner’s meeting you go all you do is defend your dignity and constantly convince to yourself you made the right car choice. Miserable.
I have 1, I would never go to a cars and coffee I'm not that sad. Great wee car not the quickest but plenty. 4wd system is good, great finance deals. What's not to like.
I actually really do like the BMW M135i. Yes it's not as raw or quick as the M140i, but it's special

Floofy Yes, it’s a good car in it’s own right and better in one or two areas than the M140i - particularly refinement and a feeling of solidity that you feel through the steering. Thank the front strut brace for that, no doubt. The trouble is, it’s uglier, doesn’t sound as good, has a slower, less responsive gearbox, suffers from torque-steer and isn’t as smooth engine-wise. It’s not even that much more roomy. The old car just feels more special and is better, especially for enthusiasts who know about cars and their engineering. For everyone else, the new car will suit them just fine. It’s sad that fine vehicle engineering is appreciated less and less these days and it’s all about onboard tech and infotainment systems.
@@andrewmoorhouse687 I do wholly agree with you, the M140i is a fantastic car and near perfect. The engine is super smooth and the RWD setup is super fun. It's just we all knew that one day the switch to FWD was going to happen and I think they did it brilliantly

Honestly i see nothing wrong with the 1 series, if u have the cash buying new or old one either way u will be happy, sometimes we listen to car journalist way too much, i went to check it out myself and the car is brilliant and proper, and bmw explained all the reasons behind all the changes and it makes sense.

Some people are blind, OPF filters, soft limiters, engines getting smaller, there killing interesting cars with character, no more V10 M5s or 3.2 VR6 golfs

Agree with the loss of a six cylinder power plant. However, new 1 series is really well put together and much more matured. The old 1 series just felt cheap.
Is this M135i built 2019 or 2020?. People say that might be differences betwen both years in terms of sound (pops and crackles) Thanks

The exhaust upshifts sound different to the UK versions it has a bang on upshifts where as the UK versions don't?
We have reached the end ladies and gentlemen. The end of the era. Not just the 1 series haha but cars in general, we're moving into seasons of hybrids and EVs and when it comes to hot hatches, makes wanna make something that's an all rounder, or adapt themselves to making an all rounder, like the 1 series or GTI and unlike the golf R and the RS3. I'm saying that I wouldn't be surprised if the gti and s3 gets the 1 series treatment. just a top of the range version of its normal car and left it like that.
They do this because they are starting not to care anymore and moving into bigger things. I wouldn't be surprised if the makes that make these kind of hot hatches don't get a lot of sales like they would get 5 years ago, I wouldn't 🙌🏽
Sports cars are dying. Cars used to have good engines and had a decent amount of torque. Now theyre all being watered down with these ass 4 cylinders. They all sound terrible. The gas mileage argument doesnt even make sense like if youre concerned so much about that than get a civic you shouldnt be driving a sports car.

My first car was also an E30 320i, only an auto... really slow but sounded so good! Long story short.. I’ve gone back to old school, with something powered by an E46 m3 engine.... :)

2:05 exactly, what makes it special? I don't think people who wants 1 series care much for 2inch morr of rear space, or 50l of boot, they want something which is different in this segment, and that was the old BMW series 1, rear while drive 6 cylnder 3l, lot of fun
Awesome car, it has grown on me go honestly but the fact that you can see the exhaust muffler still bothers me 🤣.
Strange that a 4 cylinder sounding er 4 cylindery, come on, its progress young man they will make a 140i soon, enthusiastic drivers can't use there cars in the modern world anyway its just full up with people on the move and police speed traps. i have had the m140i and look forward to getting one of these they seem much safer.
We love and drive BMW because it supposed to be unique and make you stand out from the rest of the front wheel brigade, but with this M135i you are no different from someone in S3/Golf R or A35. But they probably hv their reasons why they did this.
For the same money get a demo M240i and stick on the M-performance exhaust. I did that and haven't looked back.

How are they going to mount a 6 cylinder in that chassis ? The chassis only allows for a transverse mounted engine and you just cannot have a 6 cylinder engine mounted transversely .
@@khameelmaharaj596 technology is very dynamic and that just cannot be the only reason for them to stick with this engine...
@@AV-qo1xf They are trying out the new 2.0L 4 cylinder in the new M2 Gran Coupe and they say they would also put that engine in the 1 series so is a possibility
@@AV-qo1xf They can fit whatever they want, but this new chassis is limited to a transverse setup, front-wheel/all-wheel drive config.

the original m135i has more power 326ps vs 306ps same tq 450 nm f20 m135i is a bmw f40 m135i is a mini

Floofy you can never compare a 4 pot with a 6pot deferent cloths man, no doubt f40 has a good chassis but it’s lost it’s soul, i own a ewg msport edition m135i zf8 and after 3 years it still gets the blood rushing, rear wheel drive is where it’s at, will never own a 1series again, hate the direction they have gone, if i get a four pot it would be an audi or a golf

A Golf R has 228kw @ R727 400, the 135i has 225kw @ R769 752. To spec the 135i to the equivalent R standard specs will set you back R833 452.

tbh I doubt any of the owners of the previous (rear wheel drive) 1 series models knew or even cared that their car is rear wheel drive.

For me the front of the the exterior looks good, the rear looks so awkward to me and I find it looking cheap like Datsun go with 2 pipes. I must say I like the interior but it’s still way behind that of A class.

I really like the new m135i. I think its fantastic. Maybe it needs a remus exhaust with downpipe
118i grill looks better than 135i one. Or maybe it’s the Mercedes benz AMG grill influence in my head

Great review. My only issue is that you talk really really slowly. So I watch this video at 1.5X speed but then the engine note in distorted. Kind of a catch 22. I keep switching speeds

fauzi hassan No. it’s made by Aisin and nowhere near as good. Much slower at shifting gears and far less responsive (I have driven both).

All car reviewers are just going to have to get used to the fact that all forms of “pollution”, be it environmental or noise, coming out of cars will no longer be tolerated in the not too distant future.
I need to get my fizz going hey this lockdown got me fizzless!!! This car is clearly made to compete with golf R, A45 and a like instead of just keeping the same DNA the old one had but hey thats what markets do.

When the 2019 M135i was designed it was to be a bit of a smack in the face of the Golf R and A45 at the time hence the xdrive system. You must understand cars take time to make, the A35 was a fairly recent design language, engine setup and numbering system from mercedes all for regulations they are launched at pretty much the same time so happy coincidence. There is an 2020 A45 too and will most likely be way above the M135i and more inline with a M140i if they make one. SOooo me saying A45 is still not incorrect as the car does exist.

I don't understand the review. You go to say you can't go fast in a country road because you get stuck behind slow moving vehicle. How would it being 6 cylinder or rear wheel drive change that? In fact if anything you'll be much better off overtaking in an awd as you'll get your power down more efficiently in most weather conditions.
