    That Ibenez sounded fucking awful. Like it had a blown speaker. I mean if that's your thing go for it but the other guitar sounded way better.

      Matthew Prince That's just an example of one of the kinds of sounds you can get with it. It goes from slight break up grit to full on fuzz.

      @salottin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      heresjonny666 True, but he should've tried to shows us some of the different settings. It was just "Look at how it is with the switches down. [...] Now up! [...]"
      Just show us a bit more of the in-between tones that it can get, since we all know that it is awesome, I'd say.

      salottin Perhaps, but plenty of people do that. I personally hate when there's a long ass video where it's just every little feature being explored in graphic detail.

    • @salottin
      @salottin 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      heresjonny666 But I never said I want a 52-minute video xP
      In fact, the problem is that this video sounded like "Well, if they want it let's do it." and then it felt too rushed. I know it's a "checking out" and not a "review", but he should have explored the other options so that we can see how they'd look like. Not in detail, but just a bit more of what it can do... Not just 1 or 100.

    As a bassist, I had to get someone to ghost write this post for me. You other bass players, get someone to read this to you slowly: I have had the Darkglass B3k for 3 years, since it first came out. It's basically a B7k without all the tone knobs. It is a great pedal. Too bad this review wasn't longer, you could've dialed back the distortion a bit and show how great this thing works with just some overdrive. Brings out a very bright bass tone, works great with single-coils (like Rickenbackers) or P-basses. As usual, new strings help.

      +Helium Road
      I agree. The drive seems like it's maxed out and just makes everything sound like a blown speaker.

    • @12ealDealOfficial
      @12ealDealOfficial 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Helium Road I liked his clean tones with the b7k, but I completely agree. There's a little too much muddy distortion dialed in. The b7k's grit is usually very tight and overall better sounding in other demos.

      P-basses are split coil. You probably meant the jazz. And I agree. If the Jazz is your tool in the heavy metal realm, you need this pedal. It's a great pairing.

    I play a Spector through an Aguilar AG700 head and Ampeg SVT 610HLF cabinet which I gig regularly with. I always wondered why bass players would need a preamp to use WITH an already high quality amp and fought looking into it for so long. I finally Picked up the B7k V2 to check it out and this thing fine tuned my already killer tone up to another level.

    • @WilDBeestMF
      @WilDBeestMF 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mixing two or three different high quality sounds together can net some absolutely epic results, man. This thing turned my Eden gear into the snarling beast it wants to be, haha. It's doing wonders alongside GK and Hartke stuff too. It even transforms a crud practice amp into something just fine. Never leave home without it.

    I bought a Boss GT 6B about a decade ago and it didn't take long to learn why people use separate pedals. It's still what I use because I'm cheap, but I've been on a "simplify" kick for a few years now. I need to check this little gem out.
    Thanks very much for the review, sir!

  • @acidbath666

    I debated on getting the Ibanez SRFF805, but after hearing this video I'm glad I dealt with the 7 month wait time for my Dingwall NG-2. Just my opinion. Then again, it could be because you're boosting the B7K to the max drive to make it too much. The drive and level controls on this pedal are very relative to each other. What a lot of us are doing with the B7K is running the drive lower and bringing the blend back a notch, which will bring the bass's natural lows back into the mix.
    Glenn, I love your vids, but I honestly feel that this review is a pretty poor representation of the B7K. I'm not a DG fanboy, but I do consider their creations to be the staple of my bass tone. It could just be that the drive was set way too high, but none of my basses plugged into my Darkglass pedals sound as horrible as that SRFF806.

    I think the Darkglass stuff is good but I found the pedals I owned (B3k US & Finnish + VMT) to lack versatility. They are well suited to heavy rock or metal players but for those looking for a light or subtle grit for alt rock they are just too aggressive IMO. I have actually run across two modelers (source audio aftershock & Zoom B3n) that take the b3k or b7k tone and are able to tweak/tame it and make it way more serviceable for other musical styles.

    Hey Glenn, I'm wanting to know if you put more emphasis on your eqs and hp/lp filters, then sprinkle on stuff as necessary, or do you like to use a bunch of plugins and things to shape sound? I use a lot of the Waves plugins to shape sound (especially with the multiband compressors), but I've noticed that my boss uses mostly just the DiGiCo EQs with some mild flavoring from the Waves "classic" plugins like the dbx160, 1176, LA2A, etc. (We're live technicians, so the Waves are on the Waves/DiGiCo rack that comes with the SD series. Worth it there cause you don't need iLoks). Anyway, do you tend to take the "minimalist" approach, or do you tend to go for the bells-and-whisltes plugins galore? I know everyone has their own style and way to get the job done, I'm just wanting to get another opinion and some more insight into workflow.

    I've had great luck recording with my T21 Bass Driver Deluxe. I like that, for guys who want to mic a cab in addition or switch basses for each song, the multiple ins and outs are quite convenient, but I would love pre-console mid range control. I normally do a totally direct track, one through the SansAmp, and then a cab if requested for a three-sound blend that keeps everybody happy, even if the cab ends up...quite low.

    • @acidbath666
      @acidbath666 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Klein
      The Sansamp is more of a tube grit overdriven tone. The B7K is more of a modern distortion with a bit more brightness and clank. The EQ is on the B7K is where it shines. The Low and High Mid controls are huge for metal, as that's what you want to boost to be heard in the mix. The Sansamp pedal lacks a mid control. You're supposed to dial the bass and treble back in order to boost the mids on the BDDI. You can get the Sansamp RBI rackmount unit if you're interested in a mid. I have a video where I went thru a few settings of the RBi and B7K.

    Hey glen I love your work, and I'm a firm believer us bass players need to step it up xD. I do have a question, as I am new to recording. I play guitar and bass and have really skimped on guitar gear, I am playing an ibanez s771PB and a fender tele and playing through an old fender 1 12 automatic we and I really want to get a nicer amp, but I play genres that include Metal, Blues, country, and I play in my high school jazz band. I'm looking for an amp that can put up with multiple genres without being so huge that it will wake my neighbors. If you have any suggestions at all please let me know man, love your work and thanks for your time.

    Serious question here.
    I am looking at getting this unit but i see now there is a ultra version. Aside from the ultra having the 2 extra freq switches, what are the advantages/disadvantages of one over the other? you can split the dirty signal from the clean and assign the each to seperate tracks in a DAW i assume, what else would make one a better choice over the other for tracking in a studio?

You just get weird stretches and artifacts everywhere. If you do any form of meditation, or chi manipulation. (I know, probably another thing you think is bullshit.) You will probably understand why A4 = 432hz matters.

      ***** Others blame it on the Jews, usually people who never accomplished anything in their life and blaming minorities for everything. In theory it would help the singer as it's a bit lower, maybe the guitarists with a bit lower string tension. In practice not all singers can handle lower notes (some sopranos have problem with lower notes so much that they have to pitch shift up the song or sing an octave higher), or not all guitarists like slippery strings (I hate it on the lower strings).

    Hey Glenn! I need a bit of help here, I need a good amp head for a budget price, maybe around $500-$700. (Just for practice at home)
    A quieter amp head would be much appreciated, the reason I can't just buy a used 6505 or 5150 is because it's just too loud for my apartment.

    • @tylhunt
      @tylhunt 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Devin Kolins Take a look at the 6505 mini heads. They have selectable wattage so you can get a good tube distortion at low volume.

    I have not enjoyed metal since I listened to Black Sabbath as a teenager (yeah, when they released Iron Man - blew me and my pizza faced buddies away), but I still much enjoy your videos - even the music if it's in short bursts, kinda the same way I enjoy Bluegrass music. :-D

    Since I'm not a bassist, I don't have a bass amp, but even running a bass guitar through a *guitar* amp, and using a kick drum mic, and plugging it into a subwoofer sounds better than these "simulators" do. Line'ing string instruments just doesn't sound good, it's that simple. Do whatever you can to avoid doing that, I'd say.

      @ChristopherRoss. 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jackson Price Depends. If you're going for a high gain sound, yes. If you're going for a 70's esque crunch, its great.

    • @zeusamplification4245
      @zeusamplification4245 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chris McCartney You should try high gain single coils. Tight and clear, just be really sparing with the presence and treble and crank the mids.

    • @antiHUMANDesigns
      @antiHUMANDesigns 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jackson Price Also, try using an analog tape simulation plug, such as Master Tape or Oxford Inflator, which really soften up the sharpness of the top. Good for the "click" in kick drums, and such, aswell.

    Hey Glenn.
    I'm curious. After the attention and widespread your videos have been receiving over the last year, has that changed the attitude of the musicians/bass players, that come into your studio?
    Like, has people stepped up their game attitude wise and professionally? Or is that just a naive way of thinking...

    I'm looking at taking Independent Music Production this year at college, in Canada. While finances for schooling will be a non-issue, I'm worried about the job after the fact. Straight out of college, what are the kinds of things I should expect? Will I want to look for an established studio to work for, or would it be more prudent to start collecting equipment to begin my own independent studio?
