Awesome! This bass preamp (along with a good bass) is literally the only shaping pedal I use (my other pedals are a noise gate and chorus) it fits the bill for every style of playing, from metal, to jazz, to rock, to gospel...I can't see myself without it. People have said that the sound is too modern or "djenty" but all that really means is that the thing sounds pristine and clear.
This is the best bass channel I've seen! Love that you demo these darkglass pedals and really show how versatile they are rather than only playing big distorted metal riffs.
Instant subscribe. I really like the concept of not only explaining the process of creating a tone in real time, but also explicitly defining the intended goals for each tone. Really sells the idea of being able to use the pedal for real world use cases, which is ultimately the way people should buy gear in the first place: to help solve a problem with their current rig.
@@xwasssabix2347 thank you so much! That’s exactly my goal: to really help folks understand how to use this, and what it’s good for. It's nice seeing a demo that isn't just searing clanky metal tones. I love that stuff, but I think I love more general-purpose bass tones even more. Also, really creative playing
I ultimately went with the sans amp DI 21 12. But I really enjoyed this video. You broke things down really well. I still might have to get this Someday. Great tones.
I'm a huge Darkglass fan, and have sampled most of their drive flavors in one for or another, but I'm loving these reviews, making me look at my stuff in a new light. I've had a B7K for 8 years now, but I watched this anyway. Part of what makes your videos great is the grooves and beat production, you should totally do breakdown videos on your tracks... I'm always finding myself trying to cop your tones and pick out some of those cool lines.
@@AmosHeller also, you mentioned having a process for dialing in your tone. My hot tip for getting a great sound is to go back and forth between 0 and 100% on the blend, get sounds you like on both sides, then use the level to match to drive side to the clean output volume. Then you can freely blend anywhere in between and retain your overall volume... Sweet spot for ton is usually somewhere between 30 and 75%, but it's great to be able to go back and forth between a little dirty and really gross with one knob.
Just subbed and I'm so glad I found your channel!!! I recently ordered this pedal and you have by far the most comprehensive review I've seen so far! It sounded great with all of your basses but the Yamaha sounded amazing through this pedal! And it's so cool to see it doing clean tones as well. Another great review Amos. There are lots of excellent Bass-focussed TH-cam channels at the moment and yours is definitely making the grade. It's almost tempting me to ditch the Fender modelling amp and go full Darkglass.
Amon man, your videos are excellent. What I like the most is, the videos are well done, you test the gear, but you make comments on the way, and it is not about you playing the bass. We’re fellow musicians and I appreciate your skills and talents but if Im looking for a pedal/gear/guitar video, what I want is to understanding the equipment not necessarily watch at the very good bass players playing. I want the explanation, exactly as you deliver it, comments, details, schemes, uses, comparisons, what changes what, pros cons, etc, and for sure some sound demo, exactly as what you do. Even in the dark glass website the videos are between one and three minutes with no words, fancy bass guitar with metal sound and that’s it. All of them saying this is a better version of the family X, but you dont event know and they don’t tell what grandpa X does in the first place. So, thanks 🙏
And he's done it again. I'm never going to have any money with Amos doing these reviews 😄 Great insite and showing that you don't have to djent with darkglass.
I’ll be here ringing the bell as long as it takes-DG makes thoughtful, well-crafted pedals that *can* go to extremes, but the level of control and nuance make them great for lots of things beyond metal. Thanks!
Awesome! One step closer to that B7K ultra review! Better get it done before Taylor inevitably calls you back to the tour bus. Do you ever get to use DG gear on tour with Swifty (is that an acceptable nickname? I don’t know her personally)? Once again the best Darkglass reviewer right here. I especially love the dialing in tone with objectives and the level of detail in explaining how each adjustment leads to the final tone. Legitimately they should include links to your videos in every manual. All the best to you, Amos!
Thanks for taking the time and demonstrating this pedal in a different light. I always wanted to know if this pedal could do more than full on metal assault and you have shown great examples of some really usable tones for different genres.
Absolutely. And there are plenty of demos out there showing what a killing pedal this is for metal. No matter how many of these I do, I’m always surprised how good these sound at lower settings.
The Intro SOng reminds me alot of Nine Inch Nails. WIch is one my favorite Bands! Im glad that this demo isn't just about those highgain tones Darkglass is famous for. this was great! :-)
Hello Amos - thanks so much for this demo. Hugely informative and your choice of tracks and bass parts is phenomenal. Just tasteful parts. I'm curious if there was anything else in your signal chain before the B7K or perhaps any further processing in your DAW on the bass lines. I've struggled to get this much low end out of the B7K with a P Bass (Fender Custom '63 passive pickups) or a stock Fender Player Jazz bass. I'm sure like 99% is that you're a phenomenal player and I'm just starting out but couldn't quite get the same low end you seem to achieve here.
Just discovered this channel in the last few days.. (subscribed!) What is the signal chain on this video? Are you going direct to interface? Or to an amp? Both? Any post processing? Many thanks.
Great review as always. I have the B3K V2 and sometimes have a tough time cutting through the mix with a good tone because it’s as if the frequencies with my guitar player overlap or something. I just gotta keep messing with it and find the sweet spot.
I’m not sure if this will help, but it’s a fairly recent revelation for me that a bass tone that makes sense in a mix, especially a busy one, will not sound that good on its own. You may have to emphasize some frequencies you normally wouldn’t in the name of cutting through the underbrush. (Guitars are the underbrush)
I like that Darkglass is a BASS geared company, because it's usually an electric guitar company just making a bass version... especially when you venture into 5-6 string + bass territory frequencies.
Excellent video, thanks. Newbie question, I guess the B7K is connected to a amp somewhere, but how do you get the InEar output (Gear used)? Im looking for a headphone or InEar option as well.
Amos, this is probably an obvious question, but would you say this is an upgrade to the B3K or does the B3K have advantages on its own? I'm looking for the same tone from the B3K (love it) but just want more control over the mids and bass. What do you think?
People sleep on this pedal for tone shaping like you demonstrated. I love the boost switch a lot and running it without any drive at all to boost amps for character is killer. I wonder how much I would like an A/O hmm....
Hi, which pedal in your opinion (A/O Ultra or B7K) will work better with blues/funk, mainly clean + O/D where needed? What are main differences between them from your experience?
They sound pretty good in my limited experience. Tosin and Misha used to be on their artists page as well for what I can only assume was using them for low tuned guitars.
Thank you Amos for showing this pedal is not all about heavy distortion and Dingwall.
I agree. I love that he's doing that for Darkglass. When I ask for them by name, people just look at me strange and say 'we don't carry metal stuff'
