I totally agree with you and I think just about every fan young and old also agrees. I’m a die hard fan, but this rule would in fact make me walk away from the sport.
Yeah, let's just go full card-game! If there's a close play, instead of having the umpire make the call, have the players split a deck and see who gets the high card. Tough defensive play and he bobbles it? Let him try to roll snake-eyes and get a re-do. Strike three and you're out? Nah, he pulls a "get out of strikeout free" card out of his back pocket, which he found under 2nd base when he stole it in the 3rd inning, so now he gets a 4th strike. BASEBALL, YEAH!
MLB is becoming unwatchable. Too many gimmicks. And don't even get me started on the A's situation. MLB made a huge mistake when they approved relocation.

Let's also paint circles in the outfield walls, and hitters that can hit the circles with a fly ball get 5, 10 or 15 runs depending on which circle they hit. We can also put pop-up hurdles on the basepaths! Runners trying to score from second on a base hit would never know when suddenly they might have to leap over a barrier!
As a NASCAR fan, I caution MLB against trying to force, or manufacture "big moments". NASCAR's playoff system has started to sour with fans after controversies, bad judgement calls and it is all bringing the question of legitacy a little too close for comfort.
EXACTLY! They institute a pitch clock, which actually _reduces_ the length of the game while _increasing_ ticket prices. If they want to sell out every game, cut every ticket price in every stadium for every game in half, including parking. If they want to increase in-game revenue, get rid of the pitch clock, don't start extra innings with second base occupied, and keep the concession stands well-stocked. If they want to be viewed as "not-softball", get rid of the shift restrictions. Everything they've done over the last five years is to get as much money for as little commitment to a quality product as possible, because baseball is not football.
@@zcorpalpha2462 true it makes the game go faster but I don't believe they give the pitcher enough time and what's with the awarding another base to the runner if the pitcher throws at the runner whose leading off more than 2 time. Just too many changes for me
@Narutowatcher465 okay but I'd like to see more time on it. If only to give a pitcher a breather. Personally I believe the time that they got now will only lead to injuries
I also do not like this golden at bat rule idea. This makes the team with just the one most talented batter too much more likely to win. It would skew statistics such as total at bats, runs scored, RBIs, and ERAs such that they would have more complicated nuances and meanings.
The difference between this and the other rule changes is I think it hurts the core identity of the game. You could argue the DH change hurt the identity of the *league*, but half of games already had implemented it. It still feels like baseball, maybe not someone’s best version of it. The pitch clock increases the pacing of the game but it’s still a regular ball game. But this feels like “going from improving pacing of game” to doing something shallow and flashy and “Looney Tunes”. One of the things so great about the game is you’re only really as good as your 8th or 9th best guy in the order. Yeah, you’re going to struggle with a weak Tight End in the NFL but a weak Quarterback is more noticeable. There’s no “Quarterback” in the MLB. I know some people who are fans of QBs but not any particular teams in the NFL. That’s more rare in MLB for a reason. The coolest thing about this (strategy) are accomplished with Pinch Hitters. Implement this and you miss out on stuff like “Big Christmas” one of the most iconic moments of this year’s postseason. I will note, though, love this for the Allstar game. That’s a celebration of players, not teams.
@ Yeah, we all had ghost runners at times in the backyard, or maybe you'd let your little brother or sister play Outfield for both sides because that wore them out to run after the ball all the time. It was still baseball. The whole idea was that you didn't have to be the best player on team, that there was a set order and anyone could be the hero. I posit that Eddie Gaedel was better than this because at least he participated in the action in a normal way without interrupting the order of the game.
I'm assuming the MLB has been watching The Savannah Bananas' Baseball World Tour to come up with this idea. Because this is something they use in their games. But it's a Gimmick and it works because the Bananas' are all about having fun and using different types of 'Gimmicks' during their games to engage the fans. This will never work well at an MLB level.
Um, I'm sorry, I come to see strategy and the best players duel with the pitchers. I think it's a great rule change. I would rather they get rid of the pitch clock and automatic walks.
The point that you made at the end there was exactly the first thing that popped into my mind. What made the Trout/Ohtani situation so special is the fact that it was organic and basically a dream scenario. Also it's not like it's ridiculously uncommon to see the best hitter come to the plate with the game on the line. Making it's so commonplace that it happens once for each team in every game would just detract from how big of a moment is actually occurring.
Idiocy proposed. Total stupidity. Teams also work to prevent a golden at bat. Just ask Ted Simmons. Isn't it bad enough that we have to deal with stupidity from our politicians? Now we'll get it from the MLB. Let's hope not.
Let's get something straight. It's not Rob Manfred's idea - it's not his job to come up with ideas. He's a puppet - a ventriloquist's dummy. His job is to repeat what the owners have brought up. The owners have demonstrated time and again they don't care about being good stewards of the game, but only caring to maximize profits. Unfortunately it seems their goal is to chase casual new fans at the cost of alienating life long fans. This includes the insanity of allowing the Athletics to vacate Oakland. As for this rule change idea, let's also include a "poison at-bat" where the defense can designate once per game a replacement batter of their choosing. For example, it's the 9th inning and Aaron Judge is due up with the bases loaded and the pitching team gets to choose someone else to bat in his place. Equally absurd with emphasis on both equality and absurdity.
@@deanuemura8061 It’s happening in a lot of sports. Surfing comes to mind. Trying to manufacture fake drama. Chasing cheap dollars at the expense of tradition and the fact that what makes dramatic moments in sports cool is that they happen naturally. Crazy that this could be considered.
Seriously, imagine the "excitement" of "GOLDEN AT BAT!" followed by "Nah, sit down, we're using our veto," or "Nope, you don't get to bat this time, we're sitting you down," followed by, "Oh yeah? GOLDEN AT BAT! He gets to bat in his regular spot anyway!" What is this, baseball, or a card game? Idiotic owners, this is why I don't throw any money at the sport I grew up loving.
Why is it the goal for sports commissioners to destroy their sport? I'm sick of all the rules changes in all sports, not just baseball. If they implement this stupidity I'm completely done with baseball.
In pesäpallo (Finnish baseball) they have three batters that can be inserted in the order once per time through the lineup in any spot. It adds another dimension to the managing aspect and really balances teams that have a weaker bottom of the order. It could be fun in the All Star game
This would be the final nail in the coffin. Manfred has been systematically destroying the game for years. Baseball is definitely not the same sport I grew up watching. He does this and they might as well include circus acts in between innings along with window licking competitions around the backstop.
Here's a slightly less stupid idea. How about in games going to extras, the batting order resets? Then we get to see the best of both teams fighting to win the game.
As long as you only do it in the first extra inning, I agree that it's slightly less stupid, especially since there's a higher chance of resolving it that inning. ETA: This would even less stupid if we didn't have the DH. It would allow you to skip over the pitcher's spot in the line-up.
I'm sorry, but did MLB get rid of the pinch hitter while I was asleep? In all seriousness, I have resigned myself to the fact I will _never_ purchase a ticket to a MLB game again. (To quote Mike Tomlin, "Never say never, but never.") After not watching a complete game on any broadcast medium since 2010, I relented this past season to watching Yankee highlights only on a couple of TH-cam channels, including the World Series. (Yes, I have Amazon Prime...no, I still didn't watch a game.) I was barely taking baseball _as it is._ This rule change will complete the ship-jumping for me, once and for all.
I watched a lot of games on MLB, and man, the number of times a reliever came in and stank, couldn't throw a strike, but had to stay out there and stink it up. And, that rule immediately had me thinking, then the opposition can't pinch hit either.
I honestly don’t hate it. MLB struggles to market stars and when the main argument against pitchers continuing to hit was it took strategy out of the game. This adds some strategy back. Pitch clock sounded insane but it was good. Originally adding the DH sounded insane but it was good.
This reminds me of the other day when I was playing Giant UNO against my 10 year old son. He had about 20 cards and I had UNO. He then plays one of those write-in wild cards- "swap decks with the other player"
yes! the fields become more of an arena with all balls in play! Or, the opposite, since everyone seems to want a faster game, a foul can be the 3rd strike.
I actually like this idea. As a newer baseball fan who isn't as concerned about traditions of the sport, I think this is a great way to grow the game. Sports like the NFL and NBA showcase their star players so much and as a result draw drama, interest and revenue. If the MLB can do a similar thing, it can also draw the interest and revenue from showcasing their star players an increased amount. While I acknowledge I am not a baseball purist, I still do want the best for the game. And, I think the thing baseball most needs to work on is generating younger fan interest, and I think this can do a good job at that. You already have increased fan interest with big names such as Ohtani, Judge, Soto, and Tatis as well as others. Why not try to take advantage of your star players?
I remember Tom Verducci floating this possibility a couple years ago, back then it was being called “Bonus Batter.” I don’t like it. But if it was forced on us I really really don’t think it’s something that should happen in every game. I’d say at the most make it available for a team to use ONCE per SERIES and only in the 9th inning.
Can you imagine how this would've impacted stats like Hank Aaron's or Babe Ruth's home runs, Pete Rose's hits or the trickle down effect to Ricky Henderson's stolen base record? It's absolutely horrible to think how this could affect the game.
This is a good idea for extra innings similar to golden goal in soccer during extra time. The game can be decided by the battle of champions. Remember, pitchers win that matchup 3 out of 4 times.
I would actually be hard pressed to come up with something more idiotic than this. How about trying a salary cap, so all teams have even a remote chance of competing for the World Series,
or, make those "poor" teams spend that free revenue sharing money they get from the big market teams. Where do we set the cap? base it on the A's? I think there has been a total of 13 or 14 different teams that have won the series since 2000. So, it might seem there could/would be an argument for a cap until the data is reviewed. Of course, you might just be in favor of the owners having more $.
Better idea. Baseball Stars 2's (for the Neo*Geo) "Upgrade your Bats" three times per game for each team. You know, the one where you replace the regular bat with a larger bat.
What happens if the golden boy gets up and gets on base when it's his turn to bat? Do they get to then get a special designated runner to get on base? What about a golden arm? Why should the offense be the only side with special rules? If the golden batter is lefty, can they bring in the now-outlawed LOOGY (Left-handed one out guy)? Can the manager phone a friend in the analytics department for advice? Does he get an extension on the pitch timer during that at bat? Oh, Mr. Manfred, the possibilities are endless.
What if we could bring a player back into them game? Let’s say Mike Trout hurts his ankle in the 2nd inning, but in the 9th inning he’s feeling better. What he could come back into the game?
perhaps but most sports have a controlled way of doing matchups the fans want to see whereas sadly MLB doesn't have that, I'm not saying to allow this for every game of course but just for games that matter
I love it when these things happen organically. However, I'm not a big fan of many of the changes that have happened to baseball recently. I'm not too fond of the pitch clock, I hate extra innings starting with someone on base, and I think the only change I've liked over the years is the DH in both leagues now. Personally, I think we need to start looking at who the target audience we want to be. Do we really want people who are going to a game for a business deal and be able to say they were at a game (when, in reality, they saw very little of it), or do we want people who care about the game being played in front of them? Baseball has always been a thinking person's game, and it is losing that more and more. A "Golden At-Bat" story would be a great thing for children and grandchildren. I know I have a few of those special moment baseball stories I can tell. It's one of the ways baseball can be generational. Let's not make the special moments so common.
I don’t like it, but what about this rule change: anytime after 27 plate appearances, a team is allowed to completely rearrange their lineup once per game.
It’s become increasingly clear the MLB owners have no idea of the appealing natures of the game of baseball. They might want to try Charley Finleys idea of using an orange ball.
I hate this idea, but I'll address the "gets on base" situation. Instead of saying that once per game you can anyone hit that you want to, say that once per game you can skip to the part of the line-up you want.
Makes me think about the Home Run Derby, except it’s a real-game-on-the-line situation. Instead of disrupting a real game, then maybe you can make a tv All-Star situation: put last year’s Gold Glove winners on the field, Cy Young winners or Relievers of the Year on the mound, and run some Silver Slugger winners through at-bats in a staged completion like the Home Run Derby. The Golden At-Bat disrupts the organic flow of games, which isn’t fair. But if the idea is to see how the best/award-winning players by position fare against each other in direct face-offs, then this ‘award-winners staged competition’ could give us that dream matchup. Even All-Star games don’t work the right way, as you don’t always have the best facing each other for various reasons each year. Three innings of ‘Baseball Award Winners Face-Off Games’ (or whatever title) would give us the closest to the Golden at-Bat without disrupting real games or All-Star Games.
How about we just have a "Pick-a-Fan" rule. Teams are required to select a fan to pitch/bat for a full at-bat once in a game at any point of the choosing. If one team decides to use a fan batter, the opposing team has to choose their fan pitcher to go against them and vise versa.
This seems like an unfair advantage for the batting team, you make the lineup, you live with it or put in a pinch hitter with traditional pinch hitting rules.
Brodie alluded to it, but it seems like we would also lose the unsung hero scenario with this rule. An 8th, 9th place or pinch hitter coming up clutch against a closer to win the game.
Terrible idea but if the advertisers like it it will happen. I liken it to hockeys shootouts. it used to be special when a player received a penalty shot. Very exciting and rarely happened. The OT shootouts took that "you're seeing something special" moment away. I'm afraid the same will happen in baseball, it will become all too common.
This one is the ultimate gimmick of gimmicks. Changes like the extra inning ghost runner in the pitch clock have practical purposes… Breaking ties… Moving ball games along… Practical reasoning can be made. The “moments“ that baseball seeks more of our only special because they haven’t by chance. They are rare, and are special simply because of that… Artificially creating it becomes as tired and worn out as every Red Sox - Yankees game having to be shown on national television. Some teams clearly will have a competitive advantage over others… Because not all “golden“ hitters are going to be equal. Aside from competitive strategy, what happens when somebody has 65 home runs in mid September? Is it fair that we can give that player an extra bat every game to try to attack the single season home run record? Could that even be appreciated if that player has somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 “bonus at bats“ … Or more… During the course of the season, to accomplish the “record“? In the end, it gives us much less to appreciate. There are scenarios that we won’t be able to think of that will rear up as competitive advantages and disadvantages that just are not baseball.
The only way I think it'd work is as a replacement for extra innings. Home team gets the option to pitch or hit, pitching team chooses their pitcher, batting team sends up the golden batter with the bases loaded and 2 out. If the batting team scores, they win, if the pitching team gets the out, they win.
Totally stupid idea. Because the thing they’re forgetting is that the Golden At-Bat would be used to get your lead off hitter to start the 8th or 9th instead of the 7 or 8 hitter. That’s what the analytics will say matters most, and that’s not the goal.
I'd officially stop watching baseball and not let anyone I know I'd ever played baseball. This is as bad as putting runner on 2nd base to start extra innings.
Ok, what does the MLB wanna distract us from? They wouldn't be considering something this stupid without looking like Manfred is jingling the keys and going, "Look at these, don't look over there"
Reason for this is getting butts in the seats and more reasons to gamble and lose your shirt. And what’s preventing the the defense to change a better match up pitching wise? Leave it as it is. Use cuz the billionaire owners want to make a few extra hundred million because of a rule change, is not reason enough to eff up the g a m e at it sits now. Just leave it alone.
@@strange-universe Advertising. "This Golden Bat is brought to you by blah blah blah". Anything baseball does will be because of a few extra dollars they can shake down the fans for, they'll do it. We're talking about billionaire owners who want to make as much money as possible.
Totally OUT on this. This is why you have strategy on where you put your best hitter in lineup. Classically 4th, NL with pitcher hitting typically 3rd. Modern times it's now 2nd to get more at at bats. This would scew career and even single season stats with theoretically someone getting 162 more at bats.
If you were to replace your number seven hitter in your lineup with your best hitter he’ll get pitched around. If I was the other manager I’d be tempted to intentionally walk him. So much for the moment.
Use your best hitter but then you loose him for the rest of the game (Out of the game once used) ……that would really make you think about it before using that option.
Gimmicks nah. Why don't they institute the BP hitting rule, where once a game the BP pitcher comes in and pitches to the batting team's best power hitter.
Manfred had a good idea with the pitch clock. The clock sped the games up. Limiting throws from the mound to first base was a good idea as it opened up base stealing. Manfred’s bad ideas have been off the charts bad. Like DH in the National League and letting the A’s leave Oakland. The Trout/Shohei confrontation was special because it happened organically. Say NO to the golden at bat.
the only thing I noticed with the pitch clock is that it should have some sort of adjustment for, let's say, a 10 pitch AB, or when a guy gets to something like 28-30 pitches in an inning. Pitching is already falling apart as it is.
Ridiculous idea to allow this to become a rule, it would essentially allow a single player to see upwards of 30+ pitches and reward the batter in a tremendously disproportionate manner. Closing pitchers would not be happy in a 1-run situation, let's say best batter is leading off, he hits a home run to tie the game and is allowed to bat a CONSECUTIVE time? Then he could hit a walk-off, closer essentially made irrelevant especially if it's in a playoff series (I doubt anyone would like this idea in a wild-card round especially if you already lost game 1.) My 2 cents.
Generally, I hate this idea. However, if it gets approved, what would the consequence be for failing in that spot? You mentioned challenges in other leagues. If said challenge fails the consequence (speaking of NFL) is you lose a timeout. In MLB, I would think there would have to be a possible negative outcome other than an out to make it more strategic.

I think it's to get more Instagram-able/ Tik Tok moments on social media.
But that isn't baseball. What's the hell is up with all these changes. Please stop it
And I hate the clock and the ghost runner also
@@paulbegley1464Clock actually worked out well
@@zcorpalpha2462 true it makes the game go faster but I don't believe they give the pitcher enough time and what's with the awarding another base to the runner if the pitcher throws at the runner whose leading off more than 2 time. Just too many changes for me
@@paulbegley1464 The ghost runner can go, the clock will be fine.
@Narutowatcher465 okay but I'd like to see more time on it. If only to give a pitcher a breather. Personally I believe the time that they got now will only lead to injuries
This is the worst idea I've ever heard. I'm still getting over the DH in the National League
Get over it damm it’s been what 4 years now?
dumbest thing I ever heard
NASCAR tried to create artificial "Game 7 moments".
Hasn't work out for them
sounds more like a "wild-card" AB or, unfortunately, the Joker AB
I also do not like this golden at bat rule idea. This makes the team with just the one most talented batter too much more likely to win. It would skew statistics such as total at bats, runs scored, RBIs, and ERAs such that they would have more complicated nuances and meanings.
It's a step too far, it high time to fire Manfred
Anyone has a chance wing the game for there time
The difference between this and the other rule changes is I think it hurts the core identity of the game.
A manager could always put in a pinch hitter.
I still complain about the designated hitter, so you can guess where I stand.
Idiocy proposed. Total stupidity. Teams also work to prevent a golden at bat. Just ask Ted Simmons. Isn't it bad enough that we have to deal with stupidity from our politicians? Now we'll get it from the MLB. Let's hope not.
If he implements this, he will officially be the worst baseball commissioner in history.
He isn't already?!
@mrwiggie5108 They are discussing it seriously. But, nothing official yet.
This just sounds like a horrible idea!
MLB SHOULD LEAVE IT ALONE!!!!!... don't wreck what has worked for over 100 years.
It's now even closer to 200 than to 100. MLB can shove it.
Why is it the goal for sports commissioners to destroy their sport? I'm sick of all the rules changes in all sports, not just baseball. If they implement this stupidity I'm completely done with baseball.
I would like to see a trampoline worked into one inning of each game. Who doesn’t like trampolines?! Baby goats are pretty fun, too.
Trampolines are a hard pass for me. Tell me more about these baby goats.
And pogo sticks!
Better idea. Let teams rearrange the batting order after each number 9 batter.
In pesäpallo (Finnish baseball) they have three batters that can be inserted in the order once per time through the lineup in any spot. It adds another dimension to the managing aspect and really balances teams that have a weaker bottom of the order. It could be fun in the All Star game
This is bull s***! MLB is turning into a joke! I’m sick of these bs rule changes!
They took away some of the strategy of the game when they made pitches face a minimum 3 batters.
Originally adding the DH sounded insane but it was good.
for some
If it's one time a game, see no problem with it.
So many mythical postseason heroes wouldn’t be if this rule jappens
This reminds me of the other day when I was playing Giant UNO against my 10 year old son. He had about 20 cards and I had UNO. He then plays one of those write-in wild cards- "swap decks with the other player"
Oh yeah I remember that, pretty much a get-out-of-jail-free card
Pretty soon 🔜 have Pitcher chase a Chicken 🐔🥃🔥🤣
When I saw the title, I was hoping this wasn't the proposal. Not a fan of the idea, but good to have you to explain it.
Golden at bat, just walk the guy.
Foul ball is a home run
yes! the fields become more of an arena with all balls in play!
How’s this for a twist: extra innings only.
Yeah, shorten the games even more because the casual fan gets bored real quick.
Can you imagine how this would've impacted stats like Hank Aaron's or Babe Ruth's home runs, Pete Rose's hits or the trickle down effect to Ricky Henderson's stolen base record? It's absolutely horrible to think how this could affect the game.
It will increase betting - gaming runs the game - that's why it will happen, no other reason. Follow the money.
Might as well adapt the rest of the Bananaball rules: batters can steal first base or if a fan catches a foul ball, it’s an out.
The offense gets a ghost runner I would assume.
What if we could bring a player back into them game? Let’s say Mike Trout hurts his ankle in the 2nd inning, but in the 9th inning he’s feeling better. What he could come back into the game?
honestly, they allow it in other sports so i wouldn't be against it
@@mattttttttthew man, you really are their demographic... complete idiot
Forcing and manufacturing things like the golden at bat will take much of the magic that baseball offers.
perhaps but most sports have a controlled way of doing matchups the fans want to see whereas sadly MLB doesn't have that, I'm not saying to allow this for every game of course but just for games that matter
Im impressed you could even treat this seriously for ten minutes!
Jimmy from Chicago….Too much tinkering with this grand old game……I’m 69 yrs. Old and this doesn’t sit right with me….
….Love your show….Brody!😊😊😊
I don’t like it, but what about this rule change: anytime after 27 plate appearances, a team is allowed to completely rearrange their lineup once per game.
I prefer an allowance to change the line-up order change once or twice per game
If the batting team scores, they win, if the pitching team gets the out, they win.
that's the equivalent of the shootout in hockey. we already have the runner at 2nd, extra innings is already bad enough
I remember they tried the steal first base in the Atlantic League and nobody liked it and it was scrapped immediately
Just leave it alone.
outside of gambling, I don't know where the extra $ would come from.
This all started with the designated hitter.
They warned us in 1973.
Use your best hitter but then you loose him for the rest of the game (Out of the game once used) ……that would really make you think about it before using that option.
Dumbest idea ever. Why? This is equivalent of all the 3 pointers in basketball and why no one watches it anymore
NO!
Gimmicks nah. Why don't they institute the BP hitting rule, where once a game the BP pitcher comes in and pitches to the batting team's best power hitter.
So stupid
I don't watch regular season baseball as it is. This would make me wall away completely.
I wonder if they're leaking this idea to gauge the response. I mean, if you thought the ghost runner was ridiculous...
Quit messing with the game ..The extra inning second base shit is stupid enough to
The MLB version of the NHL shootout. 🙄
nah the mlb version of a shootout would be if it's still tied after ten innings, each teams best hitter would do a home run derby
No that would be the runner on 2nd in extra innings LOL
Ridiculous idea to allow this to become a rule, it would essentially allow a single player to see upwards of 30+ pitches and reward the batter in a tremendously disproportionate manner. Closing pitchers would not be happy in a 1-run situation, let's say best batter is leading off, he hits a home run to tie the game and is allowed to bat a CONSECUTIVE time? Then he could hit a walk-off, closer essentially made irrelevant especially if it's in a playoff series (I doubt anyone would like this idea in a wild-card round especially if you already lost game 1.)
My 2 cents.
all baseball statistics would be irrelevent.
