    I think Zion fell into the trap of his own hype. He was treated like a celebrity in Duke to the point that the president showed up to watch him. He likes the perks of being an NBA player more than actually being a player.

    Zion had the craziest hype. The Lebron comparisons, the Duke games, his shoes exploding, he was seriously a trending topic 5 years ago. But fast forward to now, he’s accomplished absolutely nothing in the NBA (maybe one all-star game if that??) and still gaining weight. He’s been told for YEARS to lose weight now. I see Zion as a “what if” story 5-10 years from now.. “what if I lost just 35 pounds when I was 20? I would’ve been unstoppable..” he needs to get his act together while he’s still young. Each season that passes, people care less and less about him. The league waits on no one.

He simply cannot control his diet, and the concurrent inujuries seem to compound his discipline in that regard. He's gotta find away to get hungry for things that aren't on the table. Charles Barkley had an NBA legend sit him down in his rookie season and call him out for being Fat, He's always credited Moses Malone calling a spade a spade for his career success. While Chuck would always fight weight issues in the NBA, he never was as fat as he was in his rookie year, even to this day, decades after his career ended he's done a remarkable job keeping himself out of weight issues (for a dude who struggled with it as much as he did). Chuck got into better shape because of Malone calling him out, and it ignited a HOF career.
    Finally like defense, rebounding is a lot about effort. The fact Zion is a shit rebounder has a lot to do with his lack of effort on the defensive half of the floor.

    • @freeinghumanitynow
      @freeinghumanitynow 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great points. Zion needs hardcore conditioning to improve his defense. He should have his people make some calls and see if he can get a few workout/training/mentor sessions with Dennis Rodman. Only thing I don’t like about Zion is that it seems like he can’t mentally lock in and accept what he has to do. I’ve been coaching HS sports for almost 10 years, and believe it or not his mindset is common among young athletes. A lot of them think talent alone will take them everywhere: they want the D1 scholarship, but don’t want the 5AM workouts, or the work you have to put in in the classroom. You’re starting to see some of that bleed over in to professional sports with a lot of young guys, where it’s like idk…they feel like they’ve made it so the work is done. I think Zion is a good kid and still has some growing up to do, but he really just has to accept that in order to stay in the league he’s gonna have to take care of his body.

    Calling him the saddest story is way more harsh than he deserves. First of all plenty of NBA guys have been overweight and had successful careers, and they're often underestimated, see Charles Barkley. Second of all, Zion played 70 games last season, averaged 22 points at 57%, 5 assists and 6 rebounds. Besides the rebounds, that's about as good as Charles Barkley on average, and better than the first four years of Steph Curry's career. He's definitely not hopeless or washed up, he's a pretty good player who's part of a bad organization that isn't cultivating his potential.

    He needs to trim down to limit injuries but to say he’s falling off is crazy. He’s averaging 23 points a game. Not exactly a slouch.

    Zion is a great player when he can stay consistently healthy and it’s sad bc he has the tools to succeed and be a great player in the league also maybe a future face of the league
    But the last three years not guaranteed should be motivation for Zion I hope

    I really thought that with the announcement of Ja's 25 game suspension at the end of last season, that Zion would really lock in and take advantage of Ja's absence this season. But now that Ja's back and has picked up right where he left off at MIP level, and all you continue to hear about Zion is weight concerns it's not looking good for him especially if the Pelicans are really considering voiding his contract extension in 2024. What makes this worse is that we know Zion was the most hyped prospect since LeBron in '03, now we have Victor Wembamyama who has even more hype than Zion exactly 20 years after LeBron, and with Victor being drafted the Spurs you know Greg Popovich is going to instill the fundamentals in Victor going forward and to keep him away from the outside noise. Zion is on the past to getting left behind twice.

    Great vid. I hope he's able to get it together. I haven't seen too many athletes with weight issues able to remedy it if they gained it after getting drafted -Stanley Roberts, "Hot Plate" Williams, Oliver Miller, Kemp, Vin Baker, etc..

      Different sport, but Eddie Lacy of the Packers comes to mind. A stocky physique can be really hard to stay lean.

      You may not have seen it, but both Barkley and Shaq have commented on having to lose weight to remain competitive, so it isn't likely, but isn't impossible either

      Saw it and I watched their entire careers. Barkley didn't gain the weight after he came into the league but lost what he had coming into it as he's always mentioned after his talk with Moses. Shaq put on the weight after that MVP year and it never came off completely which is why things like pulling a hamstring just running down the court in Boston happened. While on the Lakers, him coming into camp way overweight every year drove Kobe nuts as he was always working out 365.

    People say Wemby is the biggest hyped draft prospect since Lebron. Personally I think it was Zion. At least when I was highschool all of us would go insane jumping out of our chairs watching zions highschool highlights. Wemby was more of just a shock when you see his build and then how he’s able to utilize it.

    Zion played 70 games this year, averaging 23ppg, 5apg, almost 6rpg, 1spg, .7bpg, with 57/33/70 shooting. Pretty good season for a 24 year old. He still has the potential to become a true force in the league if he loses some weight.

    Barkley had that hustle in him...he always played his heart out...has if it was his last game...talent will only get you so far...you gotta have heart amd desire to work on your game...Even Kobe was always the first to come to practice and last to leave...
