  • This time on Pete And His Bus I'm am ACTUALLY going to start adding colour to the bodywork! It has been a long time coming and I'm aching to get going. Where is my paint gun though!? Also features my first bus, RML2355 that is in desperate need for a run and a clean. Enjoy!
    Website: www.barml2355.com
    Facebook: peteandhisbus
    About Pete And His Bus: Pete is a normal (ish) guy who has a big passion for old vehicles and particularly old buses. He is NOT a trained mechanic nor is he a professional restorer. He enjoys converting vehicles but he can not promise that what he is doing is going to work on your vehicle. Nor can he promise that you won’t harm yourself if you were you to attempt the things he does. He recommends that you are safe and responsible with machinery and equipment even if you’ve seen him messing about with it. A workshop and it’s content can be a dangerous place. If you are in doubt about your own vehicle, contact a professional for advice.

    Hi Pete, from one of my many jobs, that I did over the years: There's a technique to dust-free sweeping of a concrete floor: Take a large bucket full of sawdust and mix some oil in, so the sawdust is oily. Take a shovel full of that oily sawdust and strew it out on the floor and then sweep it up (with short, not too 'hasty' sweeps). The oily saw dust binds the dust on the floor, and you don't get great billowing clouds of dust, which settle back on the floor, as soon as you've stopped sweeping. When that first shovel of sawdust doesn't take up any more dust, strew out a fresh shovel-full and 'sweep on'.

    Hi Pete, when I was young I wanted to be a bus driver. It didn’t happen. Then I wanted to be a pilot. It didn’t happen either. Next I wanted to be an Air Traffic Controller. That’s what I became. Retired a few years ago and I was always fascinated with the London Red Bus. So I went to London, twice, yet I didn’t get on my dream red bus the Route Master😭I travelled on the modern ones. I want to visit London again, just to ride on the RMaster. Your channel is keeping my dream alive. I am a DIY guy too , but on a small scale. Awesome clips for people like me. I know the difficulty in restoration, especially old stuff. I recently painted my 40 year old Yamaha bike. Just keep restoring and posting. There are thousands who actually enjoy your ‘show’👍👏🇲🇾Cornelius, Malaysia.

      Hi there, Thanks so much for your kind words Cornelius! It's because of people like you that I'm constantly motivated to crack on and get her all done. I hope that you get to ride on a Routemaster one day and in the meantime you can join me and many others on my facebook page for some more Routemaster love. Thanks for your support!

    Hi Pete, it’s not often that I comment however I simply love watching your project. Having a background myself in vehicle repairs and an interest in classic vehicles this is absolutely right up my street. You are doing an amazing job and anyone who criticises what you are doing should keep their opinions to their selves. Yes you are not a purist but you are saving and improving a classic vehicle. Hats off to you and keep the videos coming.

    Great work Pete. Now i wanna get my own RML. i have two questions for your next Q&A. 1, how many buses do you own? (as we see another bus alongside 2355) and 2, if in the future another RML or the shorter variant became available, would you buy it and do a normal restoration as a bus and video log it like this video series? Thanks and keep up the great work. Oh and dont let anyone put you down. Its your bus and you do it as you want. If others say its the wrong way then why didn't they buy it and restore it?

    • @PeteAndHisBus
      @PeteAndHisBus  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Dan, thanks! I own 2 RML's the other is RLH which belongs to a friend of mine. I store it for him. I would consider doing a restoration rather than a conversion but as with all of those (Like the RLH) they just end up sitting in a barn not being used and I think that's a shame. They've gotta be out there earning their keep! thanks for your support bud. All the best.

    • @highpath4776
      @highpath4776 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PeteAndHisBus The RLH is prob best for TV/Film work , not that they pay much, and the areas they operated in if London were a bit odd. I think many did spend longer in Grey or Yellow (with "WIMPEY" on the side) around motorway construction sites moving workers in and out from nearby towns either weekly or daily.

    If you are driving an open platform bus without a conductor you have to by law block the platform off with at least a strap blocking the platform off and saying Something like "Do Not Board" or "No admittance"
    Ps. Love the videos and your positive attitude.

    • @PeteAndHisBus
      @PeteAndHisBus  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tyson, I'm aware of this. 2355 has a metal gate that closes the downstairs and always has a chain across the stairs. I personally feel that's enough and the very few times I've been stopped it's not been a problem. Thanks for watching.

    • @tysondundas1947

    Having painted preserved railway locos (by brush rather than this new fangled spray gun m'larky) I can appreciate the amount of work involved. 90% prep, 10% painting. You've done a great job.
    I just hope you don't have some "rivet counter" come along like we did on the first outing for one of our newly prepared locos. "It's not a prototypical livery!" he says, "And that buffer beam is the wrong red - yuck!". We "politely" pointed out to him that the loco was the real thing, not a model, so any colour we painted it was "prototypical". Even if it was purple with yellow spots (which it sadly wasn't). And then offered him the amazing chance to wield a brush and his immense colour expertise on the next vehicle we were working on. Strangely he declined the offer.
    Also I will say that I have accidentally painted my beard red (looking up under a newly painted buffer beam again). Not noticing, and having none of your mates tell you that you're walking around a station in full view of the public with a big bright red stripe of Williamsons transport grade gloss paint in the middle of your beard is annoying. It's even more annoying when you don't find out for over 8 hours until you get home to have a well earned bath, by which time it has set nicely. The only thing removing that was scissors....

      Love it!! I actually had paint in my hair and it wasn't till bed time that either me or my missus noticed it! haha. @@PeteAndHisBus I think later vids you got the internal beading just right, but it seems on when you were doing the external beading getting the butting up is really tricky, and if you were doing it to the last "overhaul" a lot had with the privatised operators I am not sure it is up to what was LT standards. I never got to see around Aldenham while bodies were being refurbed ( the (dis) assembly line was quite dramatic with various people doing just one bit of what you are doing entirely. What I did see was Devon General's Newton Road Torquay Works where much earlier batches of 1959-1964 Leyland Atlanteans and Damlier Fleetlines (Metro Cammell bodies I think they had ) were being rebodied in bays while mechanicals were being done. I think the amount of lower framing they needed was much more than most well kept Routemaster (maybe Torbay sea air didnt help). After a fairly short time I think they were disposed of (other than the convertable open top batch) in favour of the Ford Transit mini-bus era - Devon General management didnt really like the later Bristol VRs they could have got in to replace rather than re-build the older ones (and I dont think they admitted to National Bus Company they were doing it as they appeared in the older maroon livery rather than Poppy Red that the small fleet for Exeter services of VRs carried.

    Great Video Pete,
    When people moan about a bus being done either different or not the way they like it they probably don't even own a bus them selves. All I can say to those people is get a bus them selves then they may have the right to moan about something. As people don't really understand what it takes to keep a bus on the road and how much it actually costs.

    Hi Pete, stumbled across your great episodes a month or two ago. I’m in the process of buying an RML off a friend. I’d be interested to hear if your busses have had accumulator issues, and if so did you service them yourself or replace them?

    • @PeteAndHisBus
      @PeteAndHisBus  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, all RM’s have accumulator issues. The brakes are the Achilles heal of these buses. I haven’t touched any of the mechanicals yet on 2730 but I’ve had 2355 re-charged on a regular basis and I know one of the accumulators on it is apparently weak, so it’ll need doing at some point. My advise is, check and lubricate the quill drive regularly, it’s your life line! Thanks for your support bud! Good luck!
